Didn't it get bumped to 310 or something? Oh well, whatever

>>44791566
>What setting do you prefer your board games to be in?
Not ever really been a fan of dungeons. Other than that, most settings work for me.

>Euro or Ameritrash? Why?
So long as the game is good mechanically and thematically, with emphasis on the former, I'll enjoy either. Also I'm thinking of branching more into wargames too.

>What kind of games do you want to see more of?
Low- to medium-complexity wargames and "waro" games (part euro part wargame, for example Mare Nostrum) with support for 4+ players that can be played in less than 5 hours. Hexes allowed, but not counters.

>Think of a game you enjoy but find lacking. What game is it? How would you improve it?
I can't think of such a game for me atm.

>How do you feel about let's play videos? How do you feel about /bgg/ related youtube videos in general?
Like watching people sit down and play a session of whatever game? I can't be bothered with that type of video. I'll watch review videos though given that they aren't too long.

I think it might be 310. Idk if you're that same anon or not, but the bottom read like 302 and it wasn't italicized yet.
>>
>>44791566
>>What setting do you prefer your board games to be in?
As long as the gameplay is stellar, any setting goes. I can even farm in medieval Germany if the game is good.
>>Euro or Ameritrash? Why?
As above, gameplay > all. There are very good games on both sides of the barricade.
>>What kind of games do you want to see more of?
Good games.
There's also something about area control games, it looks like the only ones being made these days are KS or FFG. I'd love to see more of those games by other publishers.
>>Think of a game you enjoy but find lacking. What game is it? How would you improve it?
Space Hulk: Death Angel. Add more dice and more ways to mitigate bad rolls.
>>How do you feel about let's play videos? How do you feel about /bgg/ related youtube videos in general?
I like Ricky Royal's Box of Delight but he speaks so slowly, each of his videos could be compressed from 50 to 20 minutes if he only spoke faster.
Rahdo speaks at a nice pace, but he just loves his own voice so much half of what he says is pointless drivel.
I wish I could cross them in some way to get RR's content presented at Rahdo's speed.

Other Jewtube content is mostly rubbish with a few gems here and there but I don't have the patience to go through it.
>>
>What setting do you prefer your board games to be in?
I'm a sucker for a fantasy setting. I also love crossing mediums, like StarCraft I wouldn't mind grabbing any board game in a book/vg setting that I know.

>Euro or Ameritrash? Why?
Why can't we have both? Sometimes I want brutal player elimination, but also I want to play something more economic OR more in between (like Kemet or Dominant Species).

>What kind of games do you want to see more of?
I'd eat up a 4x game in a fantasy setting or a reimplementation of Master of Magic. I like games high in strategy, hidden information and fighting. I also wouldn't mind more games like M:tG or Legend of the 5 Rings - thought not necessarily in CCG format.

>Think of a game you enjoy but find lacking. What game is it? How would you improve it?
StarCraft. I think combat needs overhaul. Right now it seems very ad-hoc to me. Some unit combinations don't work well because they share cards - like Guardians and Ultralisk in Zerg. Tech-ing and branching out makes you vulnerable because you might not get the cards that correspond to your units.

I *like* card based combat in general (Kemet is awesome) but I think the way it works in StarCraft needs an overhaul. Maybe each unit type having it's own discard pile would fix that.

>How do you feel about let's play videos? How do you feel about /bgg/ related youtube videos in general?
I watch them to makeup my mind about a game. I usually gorge on them when I do research what next to buy.

Ameritrash - at least if the mechanics are boring, it'll be over in an hour instead of three
>What kind of games do you want to see more of?
I'unno... DVD board games?
>Think of a game you enjoy but find lacking. What game is it? How would you improve it?
Batman: Gotham City Strategy Game - the endgame feels like it'd take waaaay too long. Maybe reduce it from Level 10 to Level 6?

At the car dealership for the next few hours, 4chan blocked for pornography. Phone battery counting down. Oh boy
>what setting
2016 Mid-Atlantic coast America, in a small, fluorescent-lit room with about 20-25 people sat around wobbly tables and cards in their fists
>euro/ameritrash
Both, or neither. I'll echo my opinion from last time this was asked that I prefer games I consider to be hybrids. Straight Ameritrash feels like I'm banging my head against the wall. Straight euro is a little better, but lots of euros are a little samey and euros desperately need players with fun personalities to add levity

On a tangent, but I recently explained to my clueless friends the difference between euro and Ameritrash, and now my one friend (he works in the weapons industry) keeps trashing euros every chance he gets. Classic
>see more of
Semi-coop city-building games with partially-overlapping/conflicting interests
>enjoy but lacking
This describes a lot of games I've played. Colossal Arena was one I got on clearance that I was super excited about, but when I finally got it played, no one really had many opportunities to screw with each other, and then it ended too quickly. I think it just needs 5 more cards per monster and it's fixed
>let's play/bg videos
I watch and enjoy dice tower videos featuring Tom and Zee (skip and disregard Sam's opinions), Joel Eddy's videos, some of Rahdo's stuff if it's a game I'm interested in (rarely the case these days), sometimes Dan King, SUSD (although the fact that they host on Vimeo annoys me because I can't watch at 2x speed like everyone else) and I hatewatch Tabletop if it features a good game

Can anyone post the pdf rulebooks for TI3 expansions: Shattered Ascension and Shards of the Empire? I'd greatly appreciate it.
>>
>>44795068
The Shattered Empire and Shards of the Throne rulebooks can be had directly from FFG.
tinyurl ShaEmp
tinyurl ShardsOfTheThrone

Shattered Ascention is an advanced set of variant fan-made rules, probably just stick with the official rules at first, as implementing all of the SA stuff is a pretty significant undertaking, and doing it piecemeal probably isn't a good idea for a new group.
>>
>>44792119
> Runewars
I didn't like RuneWars - the quest stuff didn't lay right with me and overall it seems a weaker product then what comes out of FFG. Also it's only 4 players.

I prefer the StarCraft setting to wh:40k. Also I *like* the card based combat I just think it needs a face lift/it could be better. Also again - it's only for 4 players.

didn't even see this thread when i made mine.

Are there any modern games similar to Omega games' Ranger? I need some more hyper-realistic wargames to fill the gap I've had after WarGame stopped working for me.

Also, does anyone have the link to the digital version of Ranger? I couldn't find anything on it aside from some defense news article that was extremely vague about it. Phoenix command and Spectrum Small Arms seem pretty cool as substitutes but they're not really the same thing though.

XCom is supposed to be pretty good right? I heard The Witcher is boring though.
>>
>>44796890
I've not played either, but XCom is meant to be a damn good co-op that uses its app really well. I only put The Witcher on there because somebody kept asking me to. I've heard it's pretty good, and only kinda /v/-related.
>>
Is anyone familiar with Pixel Tactics' rules? Must traps automatically activate when they're triggered, or can I choose not to activate it, saving it for a better time? In the same vein, is Intercept a voluntary action? Can I choose to just let the attack hit the original target even if the hero in front of it has Intercept? Wording for both seems to indicate otherwise.
And how long does an ongoing order last? As I understand the rotation thing, it should last one full round, so if I played it during Flank, it'll last until the end of my next Flank wave.
Lastly, should Borneo (Mascot) be on the blue backed cards, and Juto on the red? Seems reversed.
>>

You might try Warfighter - link to the game on CSI's site:

Pic related.
>>
>>44795998
And if you don't mind a bit of digging and WW II - this one is 'OOP' (Out Of Print) but shows up on E-Bay, etc at prices ranging for reasonable to dayum expensive. I picked up a copy of this at a reasonable price a couple months ago. (Unpunched no less! Woohoo!)
>>
>>44796890
XCom is good if everyone is into it. Of course as mentioned in many places it's all about the overview, there's no ground level tactical squad stuff. It's a great use of an App in a game. (App can be run on a computer or any handheld device) It isn't too tough to win on normal after you get the flow of the game, but the harder difficulties will kick your ass.
>>
Anybody want to play something on Tabletop Simulator? I'm up for anything but I'd rather not run something as I haven't used TSS before.

< Insert banal and retardedly useless comment about how OP's taste in pictures is shit.> :)

>>What setting do you prefer your board games to be in?

Someplace warm and comfortable, perhaps with a spa and a good bar nearby. Being served awesome food and alcohol for free by super models would be an added bonus. Oh wait... you mean the game setting? Damnit!

I don't really care too much - I have a mix of sci-fi, fantasy, historical, and modern settings games.

>>Euro or Ameritrash? Why?

More towards Ameritrash. I like wargames, and various 4x games which fall into Ameritrash. <Hides the large pile of Eurogames under a tarp.>

>>What kind of games do you want to see more of?

Space 4x! Why? Because I'm a hostile bastid apparently, that's why!

>>Think of a game you enjoy but find lacking. What game is it? How would you improve it?

OGRE - needs affordable plastic Minis a-la Reaper's Bones minis.

Eclipse - needs a better political component. And slightly less randomness to the advanced techs in game. Solution - try Hegemonic or Exodus!

>>How do you feel about let's play videos?

If done well, I feel fantastic. (Mainly because I send them to my gaming group and have a reasonable chance that they'll watch them when I know darn well they won't read the rules if I send them a pdf or link.) If done badly, I feel all stabby! GRRR!!!!

>>How do you feel about /bgg/ related youtube videos in general?
< I feel kinda funny when they touch me in the bad place...>

I like them, but take them with a grain of salt knowing my tastes my well vary from those of the video author's. The type I like best are where the authors simply describe game play, and what they liked or disliked. If the review or play-through is well done, I can easily determine if I might like it even if the author didn't. Which is greatly appreciated since it saves me time, effort, and possibly a lot of money on a game I'll end up selling off later.

Are there any squad based SWAT or tom clancy type board games? XCOM would be an awesome board game with the encounters.
>>
>>44797979
Thanks! Greatly appreciated. I'll have to do a bit of digging to see what games if any are already modeled (and possibly available), but it looks interesting.

>>44798301
Gears of War and Level 7 Omega Protocol are both squad based tactical shooters and both quite good. Gears is fully co-op, while Omega Protocol features one player controlling the enemies while the rest are the human squad.
>>
>>44798546
Man I'm gonna have to buy gears? Fuck that one's expensive though. Guess I'll set some money aside.
>>
So /tg/ - should I get...

Mission Red Planet
Fury of Dracula
Quartermaster General
or
Neuroshima Hex

I like them all. I'm less likely to get to play QM Gen any time soon, but still like wargames. (Heck, I'm almost considering 'Pitchcar' since I only have one other dexterity based game.) Decisions, decisions, decisions...
>>
>>44798679
Gears is great! It uses a cool system where your hand of cards is both your actions pool and your health. Spend those cards wisely. The system also rewards team play, so there's little in the way of down time. It may be your turn, but I'm waiting to see if there's cards I can play to help you, or to take advantage of your action. (Example: I take a reaction shot to kill a mook before it can attack you, or if you move I play a card that lets myself or others take a free additional move too.)

FFG had a couple of videos on game play and the rules should still be available on their site even though the game is OOP.
>>
>>44798818
Yeah I just watched a dice tower video of it to see what it's like. Dude called gears a first person shooter that's a rip off of doom kek.

It looks pretty nice. I'll have to get it. I want more coop board games. My older brother has a copy of Red November but no way I'm paying as much as they want for it now.
>>
How is Neuroshima Hex 3.0? I found someone selling it with all of the expansions on ebay.
>>
>>44798981
Which version? There's the older 'Z-Man Games' version and the current 'Portal Publishing' version. AFAIK - they're nearly identical, but there are a few differences. Either version should be good for scratching that sci-fi area control itch.
>>
>>44799121
It's 3.0. Here's the listing.

>>44798745
Personally, I'd get Mission Red Planet. Pitchcar is cool if you can afford a lot of track
>>

That looks awesome, the core game alone is worth the asking price. The other expansions make it a great deal. If you decide to pass on that one, let me know and I'll bid.
>>
>>44799270
I was kind of thinking that all the track add-ons might be kind of 'necessary' - and expensive. Thanks for the input.
>>

Can't argue with your theme preference or wanting more than 4 players, but mechanically speaking the combat is still primarily cards based.

A new guy at my flgs brought in battlecon: Devastation of Indines and I fell in love with it after the first match. I've only tried the novice and beginner fighters but have had a huge amount of fun with it, not to mention 2v2 was completely crazy and yet still felt very tactical.

That said, I want to pick it up but I see there's all sorts of different battlecon games and I'm not entirely sure which is the newest/best or if there's any overlap in terms of content.

Also played Above and Below for the first time last week. I never played a game that felt so unoriginal and yet so pleasant. It really is just a streamlined version of Agricola +Tales of Arabian Nights and I'm perfectly happy with that. Could probably use a bigger story book though.

There are 3 main releases of Battlecon: Devastation, War, and Fate. If you really, really liked Battlecon, just go and get Devastation. 30 characters+ a lot of variants like arenas, bosses, and alternate bases. On the downside, some of the fighters suffer from just being kind of uninteresting compared to some other flashy Unique Abilities.
War was the original release of Battlecon, comes with 18 fighters and some arenas. It has none of the extras that Devastation has, but is a pretty good place if you don't mind something more barebones.
Fates is the latest release, features fan designed characters or something. It's the most barebones release; no arenas, no extras. I don't really recommend starting with Fates since the roster isn't as well-rounded as the other 2. Notably, Fates has the Force Gauge, which makes the game 10000x better. If you don't plan on getting Fates immediately or at all, look up the rules online and play with them anyways.

There's no content overlap. All fighters and arenas are unique to their release of Battlecon, which are all standalone. If you end up buying all 3, you'll end up with a bunch of extra Bases, life counters, and boards.
As for stuff like Strikers, Armory, and Extended editions, just ignore them until you feel like you need to shake things up with the main releases. I bought Strikers with Devastation and haven't used it once, which goes to show how good the core game is.

How does dungeon quest play? My only entry into dungeon crawlers is mice and mystics seeing as I only have one other to play with and automated gms so to speak are what I prefer. I was very underwhelmed with mice and mystics, great story telling for kids but far too simple.
>>
>>44807370
I don't know. My copy is in the mail. It looks fun. I watched someone do a playthrough on youtube. You move through a dungeon and as you go you pull new tiles to place down adjacent to the one you're in. It looks like a fun rogueish game with dice rolling.
>>
>>44807370
Also from what I've heard it's very difficult, which appeals to me.

It's a remake of a board game that came out in the 80s, so I tend to think that also gives it some merit.
>>
>>44795575
>> Runewars
>I didn't like RuneWars - the quest stuff didn't lay right with me and overall it seems a weaker product then what comes out of FFG. Also it's only 4 players.
Runewars is made by FFG and it plays 2-4 and the 2 player game is done extremely well.
>> Forbidden Stars
>I prefer the StarCraft setting to wh:40k. Also I *like* the card based combat I just think it needs a face lift/it could be better. Also again - it's only for 4 players.
Forbidden Stars uses almost exactly the same combat style as Starcraft, the only difference is you also roll a few dice at the start of the combat but it's the cards that decide the outcome. It also plays 2-4, although I never played it with 2.
>>
>>44803423
Well, any games where the board is split into smaller areas and you benefit from having the most units in an area. Chaos in the Old World, Kemet, Imperial or War of the Ring are some excellent area control games. Also commonly known as dudes on a map.

>What setting do you prefer your board games to be in?
Space. Always space.

>Euro or Ameritrash? Why?
Is this really all board gamers think exist? Whatever, I'm going to say American style. Mostly because despite hating dice, I prefer when the theme feels strong in a game. The Euro games I have are wonderful but I rarely crave playing them.

>What kind of games do you want to see more of?
Sandbox style exploration games like Xia. This game is amazing and I want more like it. I'm really considering Mage Knight again.

>Think of a game you enjoy but find lacking. What game is it? How would you improve it?
Descent 2e. Ultimately this game feels like false advertising. It's an asymmetrical tactics game not a dungeon crawler. But because it comes with lego dungeon pieces, I have 2 expansions and have done a full conversion to tabletop RPG. It really should've been a crawler like Hero Quest.

>How do you feel about let's play videos? How do you feel about /bgg/ related youtube videos in general?
I ignore board game play videos entirely. I watch pretty much anything but that, in fact. The only one I watch is "Watch it Played" and rarely.

So how many? Because I'd like some for Kemet, TI3 and Descent but don't want to pay out my ass.

I fucked up.

My friends and I played our 2nd game of Epic tonight. We drafted decks and did a 2v2 team match, and I feel like a dick, because without really realizing it I drafted an extremely defensive turtle deck where I had an answer to practically everything the opposing team had, but not a lot of options in terms of offense, and my partner didn't really have much either. Not to mention it was only our second game so a lot of time was spent during turns just reading cards and deciding what to do, so the match dragged out for like at least an hour, if not more, not counting the drafting. I ended up winning by decking out. I feel like a scumbag. How do I git gud at having fun in Epic?
>>
>>44808772
It's a 10 pack, so 500 sleeves for $30. Kinda pricey but I want to take care of a couple of games.
>>
>>44808796
Not bad compared to the individual pack price. Those are $5 sleeve packs, so 500 sleeves would cost $50. I might be assed at some point but I'd probably just get another game instead.

Lately I've been converting Anaxis into a better wargame. Naturally, using ship names/factions from Star Realms. I've actually gotten this down to an inches based system which flows so much more quickly. No more counting out 30 hexes to divide by the sensor rating, which just slows the game down immensely.

Instead now we just grab the huge ruler, check the number and divide.

https://web.archive.org/web/20130609041935/http://primevalgamespress.com/games/anaxis/index.html

It's got its problems but the core system is really unique and interesting. The ships are really unbalanced. They played like no one tested this shit.

What I added was ship damage locations and ship rebalanced. The game plays much faster and more deadly now, despite the added weight.

>>44808775
Epic is a game we play here all the time. What I can say about having fun is buy 3 boxes, make a 60-card preconstructed deck and have really really skilled friends. Drafting was cool I suppose but that sort of thing will happen once in a while. Play one of the limited formats if you're short on time and want to have fun. Personally, I enjoy 45-card sealed (30 card deck).
>>
>>44807399
>>44807420

Dungeonquest ranks as one of my all time favorites. Every turn, you draw a tile, put it on a board, and it makes a path. Every turn you deal with encountering things, rare moments you won't. Sometimes you find a corpse with possible loot. Sometimes you find a demon who slaps your shit. Sometimes you get the bottomless pit/swinging blades trap on your first turn and die.

And it's glorious.
>>
>>44809068
Have you found any games similar to it that you enjoy?
>>
>>44809085

Not really. It's crazy easy to teach, it's crazy brutal, and everyone by and large loves it, and more than a few make it a personal mission to make it to the center and back out again without dying. None succeed.

Did I mention there's a timer? Oh and it's a lovely timer. You see, you're constantly fighting the sun. When the sun goes down, the doors close, and you die in the pitch black depths.

Walls shift and put you in a hallway that leads only to a room with no way of searching? Then you're trapped forever and you die.

It's funny how players mimic the characters in the game. Death is almost certain, yet there's never a shortage of people willing to take the plunge.

The game is a bit expensive for being nothing more than a bunch of card board though. That's really my only complaint.
>>
>>44809206
Xia is pretty good but downtime is a pain, especially if someone takes the game real serious, instead of what it is - Talisman in space with a dash of Merchants of Venus!
>>
>>44809370
We made this mistake with our first two games. Now we have the flow down and can play up to four players with very little downtime. One thing that speeds up gameplay tremendously is that once a player enters the business phase, just have the next PC/NPC take its turn.

>Xia
Xia suffers from horrible design issues. Roll to move with up to d20s, random destruction, and so on . Also the grafic design is quite poorly done. All in all it's a throw back game to the 80s and if some one is into that then by all means. But it's far from good.

PS. The coins are pretty though.
>>
>>44808474

I'm the one who buys most of the games (well now) in my group, but I try to learn them and try to think of how to explain them best.

I don't know if it's only me but I'm eternally buttblassted by people who don't bother to read the instructions at all, even when we play the game all the time and they get salty when they didn't remember a rule/it didn't come up before.

Sometimes it's a 5-10 minute effort and it's too much for people.

Stop spreading this misconception. Basically everything you said is wrong in some capacity or another and shows a genuine bias against the game for whatever reason, right down to the most obvious red flag about the graphic design.

-Roll to move doesn't use d20 ever. Also, you activate engines up to 3 times per turn, meaning you can easily get 3d6, 3d8 and 3d12 spaces to move, which as I've pointed out several times, clears entire sectors of the map. You tend to move the same number of hexes as a Destroyer or Cruiser in TI3 depending on your impulse and engine size. Impulse is also free movement you get every turn to counterbalance shitty rolls.

-Random destruction is almost entirely relegated to yellow-bordered Scrap heap hexes. You can avoid this entirely by not flying through them without bonuses, a Tier 1 ship (which usually benefits from dying, mind you) and not flying into the fucking sun. You don't even lose a fucking turn with a Tier 1 ship! With Tier 2+, you don't fucking go through Scraps anyway.

-Graphic design is tight, thematic of space junkers and uses nice vivid colors to keep players engaged. Its font is the clean modern Ubuntu and the card frames have good spacing, make use of white space and section off areas so players can glance at them. As a graphic designer who gets paid for this, you have no idea what you're talking about.

-D20s are used for missiles and checks. You know, like an RPG. It uses multiple polyhedral dice like an RPG.

P.S. this wouldn't piss me off so much if you'd actually have brought up real problems with the game such as short trade routes and shields.

On topic:

>What's the best combat system in your opinions that you've seen in a game?
I know some people have said the gladiatorial combat in Spartacus, Blood and Treachery was pretty good. I'm not sure that I have enough experience to comment on my opinion. Not necessarily looking for the most robust or detailed but it's something I'm curious to hear opinions about.

Yeah, you have to read through the rules a couple of times and/or find a good 'how to play' video. But once you get the feel for it, it's great. My group has consistently enjoyed it. My only complaint is that FFG never did more with it than come out with a single expansion pack. Having more map tiles, and more minis for this one would kick ass. But even without the love it should have gotten, this one is worth the admission price.

You don't need an expansion pack with the replayability of the Horde mode. And you can always swap the original monsters with the ones from MP1.

I wouldn't disagree with you on that at all. I just like the idea that more content equals more choices and even greater amounts of fun.

> And you can always swap the original monsters with the ones from MP1.

Heh, I haven't tried that. We're still having fun killing our way through / getting curb stomped occasionally by the original missions.

Do you use any 'house rules'? We use some house rules on grenades to make them more effective at closing holes, but not auto successes. Otherwise it seems like you need an ammo crate nearby if you want to close the spawn points using the out of the box rules. (And who doesn't love running around yelling "BACK IN YOUR HOLE!!!" ?)
>>
>>44811323
>Spartacus
The combat system in there does some really interesting stuff, but unmodified it has some really serious problems. Since the initiative roll, which is done each round, is done on the same Stat as your move speed, and because the initiative winner chooses to go first or second, and because on your turn you can either attack and then move or move and then attack, it becomes very easy for the gladiator with the better speed Stat to kite the other guy around the arena at little risk to himself while still getting an attack in every round.

Not hard to fix, but really bad.
>>
>>44812670
I rarely close e-holes, and when I do it's by accident because I want to kill sth with a grenade. As long as you're not standing on one, they're not dangerous and there's a better use for grenades.

The backs of Devastation's cards are a deeper shade of red/blue compared to Fates and War RM, so you'll need to make sure to play with bases from their respective release. It's nothing major, but something you'll have to keep in mind.
Also, keep a d20 in the box, because only Devastation comes with a time counter.
>>
>>44811323
>What's the best combat system in your opinions that you've seen in a game?
I really liked the Dune combat system when the advanced rules were applied, not sure if that was translated to Rex. Basically you had whatever number of units, and hidden from the enemy player you'd choose on a dial how many you were willing to sacrifice to win, while your opponent does the same. In addition to that, leaders added their strength to whatever you committed, and also hade offensive and/or defensive cards to play. Winner lost all the units he had dialed in, loser lost everything. With the advanced rules, every unit cost 1 spice to "activate" to full battle value (in most cases 1), otherwise their value would be halved.
>>
>>44814260
That just seems like a type of auction really. I suppose it can technically be combat the way Kemet technically has combat.
>>
>>44813165
Rex, no question.
Totally nonrandom, but loads of hidden information and prediction.
Each side has some number of troops in the fight.
Each player chooses how many troops to commit, secretly.
Each player also commits one of four leaders to the fight, if they have one, who adds some number to their comitted total. This choice is also secret.
They then also commit to play either one offensive card, one defensive card, neither, or both, in secret.
Side with the higher committed total wins, but still loses the troops they comitted, keeping only those kept in reserve. Loser loses everything.
The cards can add to a total, kill an opposing leader, protect your leader, kill everyone, let you retreat, or any number of other effects. The Hylar/Atreides know what cards everyone has available when they are drawn, but may forget. The Xxcha/Bene Gesserit can ask for the number of comitted troops, the strength of the chosen leader, or the identity of one comitted card. At the start of the game each player recieves one card indicating one leader belonging to an opposing player who is secretly loyal to the cards holder. If that leader is played aginst you, you may reveal the traitor card to auto-win that combat.

GoW is a great game
>>
>>44811671
I can play Relic (thanks to the 40k universe), but this?
>>
>>44814539
Seems like a type of auction :^)

On a more serious note, that was a better description than mine. Also, does the system of paying to activate units exist in Rex?

>>44814354
Not quite an auction, as you only have one opportunity to "bid" so to speak. Also although a lot of the stuff is hidden, there's quite a bit that is open as well. In Dune for example you could see how many of your opponents units were already dead (I'm assuming this is the case in Rex also), and combined with the number of troops they have in the relevant combat area you'd have to predict how much they'd be willing to spend to win, and then plan accordingly to beat that, as well as prepare for eventual leaders, cards, and/or special rules if you're able to. Relevant to this I suppose is that getting back units in Dune could be a lengthy or expensive process, or in the worst case both, so that sometimes made battles agonizing as well.
>>
>>44814805
Still sounds like an auction. Game Theory describes blind one-bid auctions pretty well. There are actually some interesting types such as "winning bid pays second-place bid instead" which paradoxically tends to drive prices up. I screwed a gimmicky EDH player really badly one time because I had knowledge of this when he played some weird red card that bid life but paid the loser's bid.
>>
>>44814873
It's definitely a kind of elaborate single bid blind auction. The most unique bit is maybe the Loser paying more than he bid, in addition to not winning the auction. Works REALLY well.

And no, they dropped the activation cost from dune.
>>

As a fellow connoisseur of things that are righteous and goodly, let me give you a crash course on talisman.

A few people here don't like it, most don't care. I suspect there's one guy who lurks these threads and likes to scream about it all the time. that's why I adopted my name. So much salt over some cardboard and other people's enjoyment

Get the reaper and werewolf expansion. When you roll a 1, you get to move said reaper or werewolf (or both if you've got both expansions) and try to land on players to fuck them up. They did a fantastic job mitigating those 1 to move rolls when you've got a lot of ground to cover and you don't want to use fate.

Relic is a kind of refined talisman with a 40k theme. Areas are color coded to show you generally what kind of monsters you'll fight. In Talisman terms, you'll know some areas spawn craft monsters more often, and some areas spawn strength ones. Gives you a good idea of where you need to be going.

Instead of models, you get character busts. It's a hit and miss design, I prefer models, but in the end it's not a bad design choice.

Speaking of characters, there's a bit more depth to character development. Instead of trading in trophies, you do whatever to level up, and you assign where you want your skill point to go. Think of it as a step or two above zombicide.

To cut this short, you can get both and it won't feel redundant.

Also, I highly suspect that you're the shit poster I was talking about earlier. Ain't even mad.

>>44815292

Dungeon is fun. It's super fun when you have a reaper/werewolf chase someone into it.

I don't have dragon, but the only thing I've really heard is it makes the game stupid difficult by making dragons spawn all the damn time, regularly curbstomping folks if they're not the troll/assassin. Some deck pruning/house ruling should fix all that though.

I think the apprentice mage is a digital only character. I've never seen it before, and my google fu shows nothing.

How so? Can only cast as many spells per turn as you start with. You always have x spells, and you can draw from the discard pile, but it can't be the spell you just cast.

Also kind of sad that miscast table stops after craft 6. Would have no problem with it being a permanent thing, considering getting spells all the damn time makes you pretty beefy.

None, like you said. Was basically saying "I can't wait for 3d printers to get better so I can add more shit to my gears game"

I don't think FDM is ever going to get the level of detail most would want with minis.

I won't be making hardly anything aside from decorative stuff and little bits and bobs I don't think I'll ever have a SLS or DLP printer for finely detailed stuff, and CNC mills and lasers are more useful for practical shit.

Here's an example of what you can accomplish with a FDM printer right now.

>>44815480

Depends on a few things.

If people get easily distracted, and you're playing the game seriously, it's going to be miserable because you're doing it wrong.

If everyone is having a good time, talking trash and tippin the grip n' sip, you're probably looking at at least a few hours well spent.

Hard to really get an exact number, it's really based on players. Also letting people respawn into the game after they die only adds on more time unless you become the servant/partner of whoever is doing the worst or whatever.

>>44815494

Ah, I see what you're talking about now. Well it IS a digital character so the game will do all that calculating for you. No wonder that's not in the tabletop.

It's certainly a very clean and tight system where my selection of one combat card gives up others but ultimately it's just poker. Can I dominate if I'm superior and bluff if I'm inferior?

Not the Anon you were replying to, but, you have:

Twilight Struggle - the classic US / USSR struggle during the 'Cold War'.

Netrunner Android - card based and since it isn't a CCG, you don't have to worry about paying stupid high prices for 'rare' cards. The game is very interesting with asymmetric playing styles between the corps and the runners. Each group has its own distinct style.

Tash-Kalar is also a great 2 player strategy game that doesn't get a lot of love, but is quite good.

Try Neuroshima: Hex it's a really nice game for 2.

Kinda late to reply, but I bought the Witcher adventure game and almost immediately I got some bad buyer's regrets. I never played the vidya or read the novels before, the game was purely an impulse buy cus I there's no FLGS in my town and saw it on display in a vidya store. So far I haven't even gotten to learning the rules, but I want to give it a chance before I trade it off for whatever I can get. Who knows, maybe I'll enjjoy it and keep it.

Just check your cards every once and a while if you can't remember where your trail is, but make sure that you're doing it on a regular basis so that they can't get any information out if it.

Definitely inserts and deckboxes, although I don't like any of the designs I've seen so far. I've seen really nice component upgrades for a few games I own
>>44816286
Same with every game t b h. Except good players will know exactly the right time to take a space, and obviously if the first player always won no one would play them. Good worker placement games usually have something more to it too, like in Keyflower, you either bid or activate tiles with your meeples, but whoever owns the tile keeps the meeples used to activate the tile. And of course in that game players can activate the same tile multiple times
>>
Can someone give me a summary of why 5 tribes got so much mention? I heard a lot of people talking about it outside of /tg/, it shows up, people talk about how amazing it will be, I play it, absolutely nothing special, and just like that it's gone and nobody talks about it anymore. I know games have their pulses of exposure and fade out, but that game has such a crazy big and crazy short pulse, it kind of left me wondering.

Inb4 slave card/term/whatever. That got mentioned but it wasn't every time the game was talked about.
>>
>>44810490
You even bring up examples on why the roll and move is useless and shit, we all know it's shit, how there's random destruction, why even, it's just shit, how there's arbitrary respawn shit, that's shit, how the dice rolling is shit, don't use d20s in board games, don't use it in miniature games either, it's shit. Also D&D is a shitty RPG.

Also your taste in artwork is shit. You probably even like the miniatures.

Throwback to the horrible design days of the 70-80s, yay.

It's a really bad game and you should feel filthy for liking it (no, no you shouldn't. Like whatever you want to and don't listen to me, but really, the game is shit).
>>
>>44823875
Musta been the mancala mechanics, not a lot of games use it, so it was kind of innovative. Components are well designed and produced too. I own it and enjoy it quite a bit, but the hype died down pretty quickly. Guess it can get old after heavy play.
>>
>>44824204
Also, Days of Wonder got some flak for caving in to social pressure and changing slaves to fakirs after the SJWs shrieked their grievances. SJWs cheered, anti-SJW people booed, most people didn't give a fuck, earth kept spinning.
>>
>>44823875
The expansion helps to mix it up. It's a fun game but it's not crowd pleaser. There's euros that appeal to the euro crowd more and there's games that appeal to the more casual more and so on.. I think it gets a bit lost, despite its production qualities. Not unlike Keyflower, though it lacks a bit in the production quality department.
>>
>>44823875
Why did it hype? Well-known and well-liked designer, well-produced, well-supported at cons, and well-reviewed.
Why did it disappear? It stopped being newsworthy. Every game loses buzz. Five Tribes actually sustained the top spot on BGG's The Hotness list for a couple months after release (probably because of the slaves, but still).
I only just played it for the first time a few weeks ago. The owner got it on sale and we all thought it was okay

>>
>>44807370
I grew up with the original which aside from a couple of odd design decisions (armour only being useful vs crossfire trap yet one character being built around it) its nigh on flawless for 4 player hilarity.
Remake is a bit overly complex if I'm honest, I'd throw away half the combat rules and just rock paper scissors instead. There are house rules that bring it back online with the original's simplicity.
Also it seems a lot more forgiving in that in the original there were far more chances for hilarious instant death.
>>
Has anyone done analysis of Fury of Dracula, Scotland Yard, etc based on either the paths or points, and how the map is designed?

Could you adapt it to a map where you have locations to be at but can get to them in any way? For example a hex map with no fixed route between points and you can take any path you like. Or a system where you can hop from any point to any other point within a certain distance, something like that?

That seems to be how things go, at least on board game geek, these days. Hype happens as games do well on kickstarters or make the circuit tour, "blow people away" with how new and hot the game is, the game breaks into the top 100 on board game geek months after release. Then, no one talks about it anymore.

Seen it happen with Dead of Winter, Star Realms, Five Tribes, waiting for Pandemic Legacy to go through the phases by next year.

Games that get hailed as the second coming of Catan or something, but whose impact years later will probably not be felt.

Doesn't mean they aren't really fun games, but the amount of hype games are getting these days really blows things out of proportion.

The thing is, as far as I know, the hotness list is a measure of all activity on the site pertaining to each game. It only makes sense that once people have seen/thumbed the pictures, asked questions on the forums and found their answers, etc. they don't need to come back and "rethumb" images and make threads about things they already know, and so on. So of course that game's activity slows down and other games climb the ranking because they're more current and people are finding out about them.

I don't think it should be seen as an indication of a game's quality, but mostly of how recent and well marketed it is. Even if you see it and don't like it, the moment you post shit about it on the forum, you're making it more "popular."

What's there to say about games you've owned for months/years anyway? By then you know all the rules and erratas, you know the quirks, if you did anything custom on the game you probably did it earlier... I don't see much reason to go talk about it on BGG at that point. Unless it's a game that gets new content frequently.

Sorry for the rant. Just how I see it.
>>
>>44828569
>Pretty amazing it has gone on this long.

While I own the old-school 2nd edition version and almost all the old-school expansions. 30 years in this case just means that Games Workshop is still milking it for all it's worth.
>>
>>44828672
>What's there to say about games you've owned for months/years anyway?

Well, for one thing there's the more advanced strategies that one has discovered. For another there's teaching the game to new players to allow them to enjoy it as well. Having an enthusiastic teacher when learning the rules makes getting into a good game that much easier. Not to mention house rules, user made expansions, etc.
>>
>>44828201
Some KS campaigns use bgg.com hotness list to promote their game so games quickly rise in popularity and then drop once everyone realises they're just another mediocre offering. IT amounts to hotness list being the most irrelevant of the multiple games lists they've got there.

I like horror, western (Shadows of Brimstone was a match made in heaven for me) and space.

>Euro or Ameritrash? Why?
Mostly ameritrash, but I wont turn down a game of Puerto Rico, Pergamon, Scoville or anything light to medium weight. No heavy euros though, please.

>What kind of games do you want to see more of?
Customizable dice games, like them lego games or rattlebones. But good.

>Think of a game you enjoy but find lacking. What game is it? How would you improve it?
Betrayal at house on the hill is one of my all time favourites but REALLY needs some kind of deluxe edition getting rid of all the misprints and maybe replaced all those shitty tokens with something more appealing (Standies ? Minis would be decadent but I can't say I'd mind) oh and more player character choices. I like variety.

>How do you feel about let's play videos? How do you feel about /bgg/ related youtube videos in general?
Not into em, they're too long and boring I'd rather play the games myself. I do like video reviews though, mostly from Tom Vasel or the whole gang (I'm not fond of Sam, Zee and Jason's stand alone videos but I think they've got great chemistry when they're together)

Seafarers.
Then from there, if you want more depth go with Cities and Knights, or if you want more scenarios go with Traders and Barbarians.
>>
>>44834144
Both Seafarers and Cities & Knights are decent full expansions, one adds sea travel and exploration, the other makes it a mediumweight euro. Fishermen is a small PnP expansion that adds a new resource to manage. Helpers of Catan adds characters with special abilities to aid different strategies.

It's STILL Catan, though, and if you're in the hate bandwagon, you probably won't enjoy playing any of them. If you like it then by all means, try them and form your own opinion.
>>
>>44834144
All of them are shite. Every expansion turns the bad but manageable game into a slog without really fixing any of its problems.
>>
>>44835099
And that *MAY* be true. But without even a rudimentary explanation about what you think are the problems and why the expansions don't fix them, it still comes off like you whining about "Stop liking what I don't like!" I'm not a fan of Catan and don't own it, but your comment isn't really helping the other person make an informed choice.
>>
>>44835519
How much simpler do you want me to put this? Expacks make the game longer without improving the core concepts of Catan.
>>
>>44835633
OK, here's an example (not mine) of how to point out the short comings with various Catan mechanics:

In the style of Scott Nicholson's video on Monopoly (another game that must be good because it's old and popular), I will recommend games that people would enjoy if they like certain aspects of Catan.
(video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ATnXloqRfdA) [Embed]

Now, as I do not like certain aspects of Catan and I'm only listing games I have played, my suggestions may be hazier in those areas. But I am still 100% certain that everyone can find a more enjoyable game than Catan. I will not describe each game in detail, as an exhaustive list of games better than Catan would stretch until it reaches the sun.

If you like dice rolling that decides what actions you can do or gives you resources:
- The Castles of Burgundy
- Stone Age
- Troyes
- Macao
- King of Tokyo
- Bora Bora
- Seasons
- Takenoko

If you like a variable board that changes every game:
- Dominant Species
- Mage Knight
- Sid Meier's Civilization
- Antiquity
- Targi
- Archipelago

If you like building a connected network:
- Terra Mystica
- Power Grid
- Brass
- Keyflower
- Hansa Teutonica
- Ticket to Ride
- Roads and Boats
- Trains
- Thurn and Taxis
- Myrmes
- Vegas Showdown
- Hacienda
- The Great Zimbabwe
- Many, many train games.

If you like trading/negotation:
- Civilization
- Twilight Imperium
- Archipelago
- Diplomacy
- Bohnanza
- Santiago (bonus category: If you like being a dick...)
- Werewolf, Two Rooms and a Boom, The Resistance, or any other social deduction game

>>44835987
Holy shit nigga, you don't seriously expect me to read all that text? Catan is too long for how random it is but that's not what that guy was asking for.
>>
So, /bgg/, I bought Las Vegas at a book store without doing any research, just because it was there and it had a "Spiel des Jahres nominee" sticker on it.
When I opened the box I was seriously underwhelmed... Two fistfuls of coloured dice, six cardboard coasters with a number and a picture, and a deck of fake money. I read the booklet and declared there was nothing that would make the game a worthy Spiel nominee. Everything seemed so bland, repetitive and uninteresting, and resisted the urge to return the box just because it hadn't been too expensive.
I was wrong teeg, dead wrong. I finally played it last week with some friends and we had a great time. We taunted each other, shouted cliches while chucking dice, laughed at bad rolls and worse desicions, ganged up on the leader and had a lot of chaotic fun. I still don't know if it is Spiel material, but I'll be damned if such a simple filler wasn't satisfying.

Ever had a game you had no hopes for surprise you, /tg/?
>>
>>44835633
I can fully understand not liking Catan, but if you want to be bro-tier and help another anon find better alternatives when it comes to choices in games, one has to do more than just saying "Game X sucks. Everyone says so."

Munchkin is another classic example. New gamers often find Munchkin to be an easy and quick board gaming fix. When one is new to gaming and new to Munchkin it has some humor and charm. The problem is Munchkin doesn't have any 'personality'. Charm will get you through the first 20 minutes of any conversation, but after that you better have some personality to back it up. Unfortunately Munchkin doesn't have what it takes. To explain Munchkin's short comings - one need only point out that the jokes become stall quickly, and the 'take that' aspect becomes such that it's very predictable who's going to win - typically the person in 2nd place. One could easily point to 'Cutthroat Caverns' for example as a better 'adventuring' alternative, which incorporates both semi co-op and 'take that' mechanics into a much better overall play experience.

TL:DR - It's ok to have negative opinions - but "Shit Sucks" comments don't do other anons any damn good and just sound like "Waaah - stop liking what I don't like."
>>
>>44836025
No, it's just an example - see >>44836083
>>
>>44836083
Are you clinically retarded? The guy I replied to didn't ask for an alternative to Catan. He asked if the expansions were any good. I said no and explained why. I don't hate Catan, I'm partial to it from time to time but the expansions make it run too long for a game of its depth.

>Ever had a game you had no hopes for surprise you, /tg/?

Yes. I was actually surprised by how much fun Citadels is. It's a simple game where each round you choose a character card to use while trying to collect gold and build (buy) various buildings (cards) to create the best city / most victory points. Different characters have different abilities and offer opportunities to mess with other players, etc. It's a lot of fun for such a small package.
>>
>>44791831
Yeah, Sentinels of the Multiverse is pretty bad.
>>
>>44836063
Surprisingly enough, I was wary of Viticulture when I was first asked to play it. I don't much care for worker placement games, and I'm teetotal, so a worker placement about making wine had me going "Eeehhhhhhhh..." inside. However, the person who'd brought it was a good gaming pal of mine, who'd lugged the not-inconsiderably sized box with her, so I figured I might as well indulge her for an hour or so.

And now, of course, I'm constantly scouring eBay and BGG for a reasonably-priced copy. I guess I'm a sucker for games that are so swingy, they even out to becoming perfectly balanced. Thankfully, Essential Edition has recently come out, so the price gougers can go whistle for it.

>>44838788
Heard good stuff about Bruges and Suburbia, but those are not in stock at my FLGS atm, will try the app, thx.

Before I start another thread, I thought I might as well ask here.
I was considering picking up one of these, but the only one I have some experience with is Krosmaster.
Experiences or opinions about these?
>>
>>44839032
The app is buggy as shit. Just warning you. If you scroll too far in one direction so the map tiles are no longer visible, you can't scroll back over them. You have to quit the game and start over from the beginning. I've also had several other gamebreaking bugs while placing tiles. Luckily the games are only like 20 turns.

If you're into PvP go for Arcadia Quest, if you're looking for a 1vAll get SDE unless you want to go full campaign in which case get Descent (or IA) but be aware it's more of a racing game than a straight hack/slash. Krosmaster Quest is fine, but not great; when I tried it I couldn't really be bothered to care one way or the other about the game. Upside it's backwards compatible with Krosmaster Arena if you've already got it. Vasel said it best when he said it's got potential to be a really good dungeon crawl, but is only good and a bit too nebulous.
>>
>>44839301
SDE a shit
AQ much less shit
Krosmaster bretty gud, but expensive
Descent has some issues, but best campaign game of those.

>Ask the people who make the generals. The only namefag I ever see make one is talismayne

Except that would be wrong. I've made a number of the generals in the past year using the images with historical 'Generals' in them.

>>44838376
>You know most generals tend to put links in the OP. If shit is asked so often that you need a list for it, put it in the OP.

Like the pastebin in the OP for this thread and months worth of past /bbg/s that was created by a Tripfag? Oh no! Now you'll never be able to use that pastebin again! <Gasp!> Considering that collectively none of the sea of 'Anons' could be bothered to do it in the years before, it's hilarious and highly ironic to bitch about Tripfags while remaining completely fucking ignorant of the fact that said 'Tripfags' did the work your ass was to lazy or stupid (or both) to accomplish yourself. When I did the first draft of the pastebin 5 or 6 people (some anons, some trips) contributed links. In all the months since then, exactly 1 anon has bothered to contribute and was kind enough to add some additional links to online game stores outside of the U.S.

But please - feel free to find another thread since 'Tripfags' are such a huge burden on your mental capacity. Might I suggest any one of a number of "fine" threads populated by Anons:

1. Elf Rape - wut do?
2. SJWs - wut do?
3. RPG Version X = Shit - discuss
4. Hey Guyz, where can I dl Fatal RPG?
5. Warhamz 40Kek - GW is awesome/sucks
6. Your waifu a shit
7. That Guy
8. That GM
9. Mastercrafted Katana
10. Stats me
11. Quest thread #MCVXXVII
12. File name thread

Only Feld I've played is Bruges. I've been interested in trying Amerigo for a while now, but don't know anyone who has it. One of these days I should try CoB or Trajan but I'm not going out of my way for them

Had the opportunity to buy CoB for $20 a few times on Amazon, but couldn't muster enough interest to pull the trigger
>>44839301
Krosmaster is a money printing scheme more than it is a game. Only played Arena (which was fine) but I've heard Quest is boring.

Only other thing I've played was Imperial Assault (adapted from Descent's ruleset) which was also fine, but many dungeon crawlers make me feel like I'm just going through the motions
>>
>>44838751
I've got Bora Bora, but haven't had a chance to play it. I own Castles of Burgundy and like it alright as well. To bad you don't live near me (in all likelihood) otherwise I'd be glad to sit down and try a game. I haven't managed to play a lot of Euros with my local gaming group sadly. I need to introduce them to Stone Age, Five Tribes, Puerto Rico, Terra Mystica, and others.
>>
>>44839301
Descent isn't a dungeon crawler.
>>
>>44839761
You can quit shitposting. No one cares.
>>
>>44839800
>Krosmaster is a money printing scheme more than it is a game
Definitely true, especially since the US distributors stopped using the window box format after season 2. Most players I've met seem to want to enjoy it as a casual skirmish game, while the publishers seem to think it needs to be a competitive, like Magic or X-wing. Don't see it happening but now that CMoN has it who knows.

>many dungeon crawlers make me feel like I'm just going through the motions
I used to feel like that when I first tried out a few of them, because I was looking for something more like an RPG experience in board game format, which they're not.

>>44839901
>Descent isn't a dungeon crawler.
True that, total racing game.

>If I anonymize everyone it doesn't fix things because they're still shitting up threads by acting like they're important somehow.
So what you're saying is that even if the tripfags lose their name, they'll still act like snowflakes. In other words, you're accomplishing nothing by shitting up the thread by giving them attention since even if they converted to anon, they would, by your thinking, be just as bad?

If they wouldn't be just as bad without the name on, then you can anonymize them and save us all the grief.
>>
>>44840698
Well so am I!
>>
>>44840703
No, the continuity of their name across what they say is recognized by others, and it still results in the same shitting up of the posts whether or not I know it is them. If I anonymize this thread, it's still filled with shitposts.
>>
>>44840698
No, you're not TI3 Chick. Just stop you assburger
>>
>>44840744
Just like yours.

So you're living proof that people who become anonymous don't stop being attention whores.
>>
>>44840744
What you're really saying then is that it's how other people react to tripfags that you don't like. You know. Like how you are.

Dumb bitch doesn't even know how tripcodes work.
>>
>>44840907
I think she meant deleting both from the name field. Name and trip. Because yes unless you have form memory on you have to type all that back in
>>
>>44840791
Exactly. I just make the problem bigger so it's even more people's problems so they can get pissed about the problem too. It's a long game and it involves a lot of shitposting, but it usually gets results. Look at how many people I've gotten arguing about this shit. I even have someone impersonating me. I just had to push over a couple of dominos to get what I want.

If tripfags weren't around, I wouldn't do this. I don't really care if I get my way or not, I just want others to have a bad time too at this point.
>>
>>44840744
Why do you keep acting like it's always the people complaining are at fault, rather than the reason of their complaining in the first place?

We used to play risk and TEG.
