What music does /tg/ use when you're planning or running in the background during the game?

I've got pretty terrible taste but I've used some LOTR inspired stuff and the generic "fantasy song playlist" from youtube but that's really hit and miss. Want to build up a better playlist.

Misty Mountains (from the actual Hobbit movie): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BEm0AjTbsac
Witcher 3 soundtrack: https://youtu.be/oLSdl-CdOBo?t=9m21s is something I'm also partial to.

Any genre welcome, no point it just being fantasy.

Try Wongraven - Fjelltronen, it's one of my favorite dungeon synth albums. The entire genre is amazing for background music, it's very minimalist and doesn't require any focus to listen to.

My Shadowrun game gets a lot of use out of the Payday 2 soundtrack. My players have never played the game in their lives, but they're always on the verge of panic when I start up "Where's the Van?!"-usually means something's gone terribly, terribly wrong, and they need to get the fuck out of dodge.

https://youtu.be/JjneVBKi7-k

For my PF Golden Age of Piracy game, the Curse of Monkey Island soundtrack does just about everything I need. However, I will occasionally break out a shanty-any players who know it well enough to sing it get roleplaying XP.

I've been working on a high fantasy game and have been listening to a lot of music to get myself in a creative mood. Will probably play a lot of what I've used in the background.

So far, I've mostly been listening to WoW music. Say what you will about the game, but Blizzard's music department is top notch.

Some of what I've been using:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kG2VR62_GuU
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IroaLAbltxg
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bFSKZEgstCM (my personal favorite)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DoMUl5_fAGI
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mpyInx0ldfo
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RrDxnkD7WvQ

Warcraft music really is great for background music. The pieces tend to be very long, and they're ambient by design, so it won't really take much focus away from you or the players. I like LOTR music and other similar OSTs, but those are often very distinct so I find my mind wandering about what movies/scenes I heard them in. They're also shorter, so you need to find more of them to make a longer playlist.

Plus unless you have a WoW player in your group most people won't recognize it and call you on it.
>>

This guy gets it.

I love having "oh, shit" songs that players come to recognize. Having one of them start playing after being established is a great way to get players more involved and drive up the intensity of the scene.

Some of them that I've used in no particular order:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RbBXFwuEzu8
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7NXpaTqBkL0
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ganMQM4yXmo
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RmvKV6AUlVw
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kkWl5ctiWyM
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NJ00mMo9w8k&index=40

In general, I use a lot of film and television soundtracks from things a majority of my players probably haven't seen-Sicario, Utopia, and then a lot of Carter Burwell are my go tos right now.
>>
>>44721662
for me i use music of the period, for instance for medieval music such as:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DEeAN471boQ

I will also use things like this if the group is traveling through a forest:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OdIJ2x3nxzQ

Climax of a campaign might have something like Mozarts Lacrimosa

Youtube pretty much has a video for everything.
