What is the /tg/ equivalent to this?
>>
>>44576804
All I know is lvl 6 is fatal and lvl 0 is D&D 4e which I enjoy
>>
>>44576853
4e isn't mainstream enough anymore to be level 0.
Maybe it was before 5e came out, but now "D&D" is 3.PF or 5e

The point is level 0 is stuff that the common casual would start with. And since 4e has a (no matter if you think it is deserved or not) bad reputation among the D&D crowd, and is no longer being pushed by wizards.

If someone just wants to see what these "are pee gees" things are all about and goes to the store and buys "D&D" they aren't buying 4e.
>>
>>44576804
I'd pitch an idea of some of the tiers, but I really don't know/play that many /tg/ games besides the more common/popular stuff like WH40K and D&D

If I had to try but not get a complete list it might look something like this

Tier 0: Chutes and ladders, Monopoly, other less engaging household known board games, AoS, D&D 4e, Munchkin

Tier 1: WH40K, WHFB, D&D 5e, D&D 3.5, Shadowrun

Tier 2: D&D 2e, Call of Cthulhu

Tier 3: Older editions of WH40K and WHFB, more traditional wargames

Tier 4: Chainmail, Original D&D

Tier 5: ???

Tier 6: FATAL
>>
>>44577176
I always love how creep these games get so I have to ask what is FATAL?

I'm really curious.
>>
>>44577216

https://1d4chan.org/wiki/FATAL
>>
My favorite /tg/ type game is AD&D 2e with most of the optional rules out. It really plays a shit load like OD&D. I would say any OSR clone is on the same tier, whatever that may be.

Get started, OP.
>>
>>44576804
Oh hey, I used to play HellMOO. Great.
>>
>>44577176
This is from a gamer perspective, I would bump AoS and Dnd down a level, and replace them with stuff like Clue and CAH
>>
>>44576804
Where do you put CoC and TiTS on that chart?
>>
>>44577422
What it be?
>>
>>44577475
A post-apocalyptic MUD(Multi-User Dungeon). It's a lot of fun if you can get past the fact that the whole userbase acts like their from 4chan and reddit's bastard child, and sex is a fairly predominant in the game, though you can avoid it almost completely if you want to.
>>
>>44576804
I play level 1, 3 and 4 games. And why the fuck os Kerbal on tge same level as DCS?! Both are easy as fuck!
>>
>>44577572
Thanks for the tip
>>
>>44577176
I wouldn't put Shadowrun on the same tier of normie-ness as either D&D edition you listed, honestly. CP2020 for tier 3 regardless.
>>
>>44577469
Probably slightly above FATAL. CoC has the benefit of admitting it's just fucked-up fetish pandering from the get-go and not trying to be serious at all.
>>
>>44576804
Half the shit in level 1 belong in level 0.
>>
>>44577745
And phone/facebook games belong in level-1
>>
>>44577176
I would put WoD at Tier 2, and Live Action WoD at tier 3.

For Tier 5, there's Gang Rape. The game, not the actual activity it's based off of.
>>
>>44577339
People who started that way. I started without graphics back before Z-levels were a thing. They confuse me now.
>>
Where is LotFP?
>>
>>44576804
> I am /v/ level 3, most of the games I played and enjoyed are level 2.

As to the question, I think how likely you'll find a grill in is a good way to paint it. Also, level of difficulty and involvement (especially when collectibles are concerned), although it is related.

Tier 0: Monopoly, Scrabble, Chute and Ladders
Tier 1: DnD 3.0 and up, Pathfinder, New World of Darkness / Chronicles, Most LARPS
Tier 2: Old World of Darkness, DnD 2.0 and below, GURPS
Tier 3: Shadowrun (all), most TCG
Tier 4: Warhammer, Malifaux
Tier 5: ???
Deep dark tier: FATAL
>>

My neckbeard has fully awakened, believe me. I never actually finalized any of my self-invented homebrews, but I could have totally had a somewhat Strike-Witches based minis game complete with plane designations/research/engineering, weapon loadouts, a modular magic system, crash rules, variable heights... actually, the height bit was the issue, since minis would have to float. I did do a (shitty) test of the combat over Roll20 once, so I count it as "played".

I think we could only get a consensus on what belongs in tiers 0, 1, and 5. Everything in-between is highly dependent on what's hot in the local gaming culture.

Obviously level 0 is for toy aisle bullshit, checkers, and chess (in casul-modo knowing only the basic rules and absolutely no strategy).

Everyone knows 40gay, Magic, and caster edition belong in level 1.

Level 5 would be magical realm and stuff pretty much only /tg/ even knows about.

Allright, Idk if it is popular or not, but flexibe survival is one
>>
>>44577176
This seems like the best start out of anything else here. How are you ranking them? General awareness, complexity or some combination?

Either way I'd put Delta Green on Tier 3 since I've run into a lot of people that are into Call of Cthulhu but have never heard of Delta Green. Unknown Armies would probably be Tier 4 or 5 just for how weird it is. Stuff like Everyone is John, Car Lesbians, RaHoWa and the other games that mostly spread by word of mouth and pdf shares would be Tier 3-5.
>>
>>44579856
Actually, ESPECIALLY if they're shitty porn games.
>>
Every one of these charts: things the creator doesn't like are at the top, things he likes are in the middle, and things that are obscure or universally reviled are at the bottom.

UA would be a solid tier 5

Tier 2 or 3 maybe? Enough that its mention would bet blank stares from people in Tier 0 or 1, an "oh you've heard of it too?" reaction from Tier 2 or 3 people and stifled laughter and "oh that's cute" reactions from Tier 4 and higher.

The person who made it is a faggot.
>>
>>44580063
Not the anon but what is deep and dark? Is it the fact that it is hidden or edgy? Exemples?
>>
>>44579907
Yeah probably, but ideally:

>Tier 0
Stuff complete outsiders to the hobby have most likely heard of or even played once or twice. Things that get ads on TV.

>Tier 1
Entry level. May not be known to the general public but almost everyone in the hobby has played it at least once. Things openly displayed in stores pertaining to the hobby

>Tier 2
General starting point for subgenres in the hobby. Stuff newcomers might have only heard about. Will almost definitely draw blank stares from outsiders.

>Tier 3
The niches start getting more specific. Region specific or self published material that has gained "popularity" would go here. Hidden gems found either online or tucked away in "the cool stores"

>Tier 4
Full blown weird guy either do to obscurity or difficulty to handle. Things virtually inaccessible to people who won't take time to understand it. Low tier people within the hobby likely won't find out about it unless introduced to it by someone else and even then there is no guarantee they will enjoy it

>Tier 5, above
Things that meet increasingly specific tastes to the point that they could comprise an entirely separate hobby. Things found when met with an increasing dissatisfaction with what can be found in lower tiers. People in Tier 5+ likely find things in Tier 4 to be nostalgic indulgence and probably can't be bothered with what the lower tiers have to offer.

What level is winning The Game?
>>
Hmmm. Well, I'll give my look at it.

Tier 1: Casual old timey board games families play on a rainy day.

Tier 2: Popular tabletop games like D&D 5e/4e/3.5/Pathfinder. Also stuff like Dominions, Settlers of Catan, etc.

Tier 3: More slightly more obscure and/or older games like CoC, Delta Green, Cyberpunk, 2e/AD&D and so on. Additionally Larping really should fall at this level. It takes a bit more involvement than a more casual tier 2 game. Tabletop 40k should be here as well - not because it's hard or obscure, but because it requires a bit more of a time/money investment. DMing a tier 2 game would also fit here. Dwarf Fortress and Alpha Centauri can go here too. Some older board games like Nightmare could fit at this level depending on how hard they are to get.

Tier 4: Fairly obscure or difficult to play games with complex math. There was an old mech game I played a few times that required you to know and do some trigonometry, for instance. People assembling their own terrain for gaming tables and similar stuff should also be here. Very old games like the original 1st edition D&D or Chainmail would also go here. It's expert tier.

Tier 5: FATAL is a given, but there are probably other things that fit in the same tier. This would also be the level where you've got people putting together fully functional powersuits to do 40k cosplay, making real and functional replicas of fantasy or 40k weapons, etc. I think running an actual gaming store should fit here as well.

Oh yeah, and Tier 4 should also include actively playing games that are "discards" knowingly. Like the d20 Call of Cthulhu splatbook. Nobody liked it, nobody wanted it, but it was made anyway. Knowing that and still playing it just because would have to be tier 4 behavior.

FATAL is a joke. I don't know if the humor was intentional, but it's the Platonic Ideal of an unplayable mess.

L0 would include Fantasy Football.
Mid tier would be shit like diceless systems and Theatre Sports
Deepest I've found is some furry game with talking octopi where everybody live on the branches of Yggdrasil. Sure there's weirder shit than that out there.

It's about playing little zombie girls who are falling to bits and going insane in a dead world.
Combat is swingy and you can expect to get limbs severed and body parts hewn every fight. It ends up a very gory mess of the winners breaking apart and putting themselves back together with the pieces of the losers.

Why exactly is The Last Remnant level 4? Sure, it's hard but a Square Enix RPG is hardly the most obscure thing in existence.
>>
>>44586159
I assume it's because to play 40k you have to be willing to buy models, assemble the models, paint the models, read a shitton of rules about your models and OTHER peoples models, and play war with other faggots who have models.

All this while putting up with GW's bullshit. 40k is a truly abusive relationship.
>>

...Okay, when you put it that way it makes a bit more sense. Also the sheer amount of money that goes into it from what I've seen. The cost is one of the biggest roadblocks for me trying 40k, especially since the army I like best (IG) is crazy expensive.

because the amount of effort required to play that game is immense, the game itself much like dwarf fortress has little to no intuitiveness, and things youd think to normally do in a RPG like game are wrong and bad, there are numerous break points where you can miss huge amounts of side quests and you are given NO warning or indication about this. Essentially if you want to beat that game in 1-2 play throughs you will spend the first 4 hours reading up on the wiki/guides before you do anything in order to avoid totally fucking yourself over. Thats why

Are you talking about the original xbox version? Because I've played and beaten the PC version and never encountered some of these problems. Game gives a warning when you're going to disk2, and while it does have a lot of mechanics that really are not well explained it's not as dire as you say. I went in blind and did alright, though I did eventually check over a wiki for sidequest purposes and to better understand some of the mechanics.

Granted pic related was bullshit and is where I stopped going for sidequest completion.
>>
>>44586460
Well. Uh. I don't really have any religious beliefs besides feeling it should be a personal inward-looking discipline. I just feel like it's pretty obvious we're chemical meat sacks in a lonely galaxy. Though I don't buy nihilism, I feel it puts the onus of purpose on us together, and we should just really be more sweet and less hostile to one another, because I'd love to see our collective story have a happy end. We're so much better than this. I guess that sums the question up without getting too chatty. Why?

Why are there so many obscure MMOs in the last two tabs? I mean isn't that kind of user-built world the thing that Minecraft is? I dont play Minecraft so I dont know how it is but a lot of this sounds like pretentious hipster faggotry on /v/'s part.

Second question: Are text adventures/roguelikes really that fun? I prefer the numerical/crunchy/framework side of RPGs vastly to the fluffy wuffy stuffy. Will I get anything out of these types of games?
>>
>>44586555
It can be, i played about halfway through myself, then started reading a some wiki stuff to find out where to get various items, and realized i may have screwed myself by grinding incorrectly and became to paralyzed to try and finish the game, then lost my save, so my experience was as dire as I mentioned, perhaps you are just better or luckier than I, but that game has far more unexplained horsecrap in it than just about any other JRPG ive seen, and seems to require almost MMO levels of investment to full complete it. I am the 2007 newfag. I actually have always hated anime and the undercurrent of radical "free speech" edgy mentality here. Literally since day one.

However, despite having nothing but contempt for this place, I realized that it is one of the few places where I can abandon my own ego and so can everyone else. SA, as you know, had a huge fucking problem with "e-celeb" shit and everyone wanking to popular personalities.

Save for faga like Lanced Jack, Manly Tears, or Quentin you dont get that here. No artifical filter, everything here has a sort of passionate "honesty" to it even if whats being said is fundamentally retarded. Even the infinite cuckold trollposts on /tv/ betray a kind of genuine sincerity.

I just really like the anonymity I guess. I also really enjoy using Yik Yak as well and hate social media sites and forums. The phoniness feels absent (or at least you feel that way).

well the Doomtrooper (card game set in Mutant Chronicles universe) was quite popular here, maybe more so than magic, so that's probably the reason

but aside from that people generally play what the rest of the world's playing
there's always warhammer fantasy vs dnd (the former is more popular here), shadowrun, cthulhu, vampire, dark heresy, pathfinder, legend of five rings, and Polish systems like neuroshima, monastyr or Wolsung (this one got translated and released outside of the country so you guys may've heard of it, if not you can google it)

You should also try a not!Poland in your setting. Mainly for doing some hardcore stuff. >>
>>44580332

This post should've gotten more attention because it's really the standard by which these pictures should be made.

For example,

>Tier 0
"D&D" (usually 3.5e, but more so to indicate that the various games are perceived as a singular grouping)

>Tier 1
Pathfinder, D&D 5e, Savage Worlds

>Tier 2
GURPS, Shadowrun, Mutants and Masterminds, ORE, Legend of the Five Rings, FATE

>Tier 3
Burning Wheel, Dogs in the Vineyard, * World games, Mouseguard, Traveller

>Tier 4
Adaptus Evangelion, In Nomine, Magical Burst, Wushu, Legends of the Wulin, Tenra Banshou Zero and other translated Japanese P&P games, Silhouette Core, VeloCITY

>Tier 5+
Touhou Flowers RPG, untranslated Japanese P&P games, Hikikomori

Basically, the deeper you go, the more niche it is. Tier 5 and above should be reserved for the really weird shit you wouldn't even know about if not due to the occasional mention of it on /tg/.

SUSPICIOUS
>>
>>44591316

Depends entirely on how complex it is.

>Tier 1
d20+modifier-tier complexity. "Roll a die, add a modifier, I decide what happens." Less "skills" or "stats" than fingers on your hand. Comparable to a drinking game.

>Tier 2
Risus-tier complexity. More skills or stats than fingers on your hands, but they more or less amount to making shit up and adding it to a dice roll. At least one or two ways of introducing minor levels of complexity to an otherwise roll-off based system.

>Tier 3
* World tier complexity. At the least, you had to carefully consider the wording on your "abilities/moves/whatever," and designed classes to emulate some sort of archetypical character.

>Tier 4
Homebrew heavily modified from an existing system. Adaptus Evangelion v2.0. "That homebrew you made for D&D 3.5e so you could use it for a setting other than high fantasy."

>Tier 5
Homebrew designed entirely on your own with complexity great enough to rival many mainstream systems. Adaptus Evangelion v3.0, Dungeons the Dragoning, Battle Century G

Yes, designing your system by definition places you at a minimum of Tier 1.

ins't that game a myth?
>>
>>44585252
this is a very ...lenient chart.

and, likely made by a level 2. see FATAL is higher inside it's realm than KPfS

i am gonna make a modifiable tif, so it can be future updated. i forgot if /tg/ supports tiff's in Shoppable form....

>>
>>44576804
Bliss Stage is gonna be down in the deeps, slightly above FATAL.
>>
>>44577176
In both cases, I am firmly Level 4 it seems.

Might I suggest for Tier 5: Firefly 6mm, Phoenix Command, Challenger II, and Advanced Laserburn?
>>
>>44592024
Well now you gotta post it.
>>
>>44577246
I actually have the rulebook for it, but on my other computer and it's actually too large to upload here. That should give you an idea of how many rules it has.
>>
>>44596558
Oh, fuck, i've played Fairy Meat.
>>
I am going to work on a wargaming version of this chart but this is just the tip of the iceberg as far as wargaming goes

Tier 0: Guild Ball, X-wing, Attack Wing
Tier 1: Wrath of kings
Tier 1: Current 40k, AoS, Warmachine, Hordes
Tier 2: King of War Frostgrave
Tier 3: Infinity,WHFB
Tier 4: Old 40k
Tier 5:
Tier 6: Heavy Gear Blitz
>>
>>44597683

see >>44596852
>Tier 5: Firefly 6mm, Phoenix Command, Challenger II, and Advanced Laserburn

No fucking joke. 80's war games are the worst.
>>
>>44597683
>Tier 0: Guild Ball, X-wing, Attack Wing
hahahaha, they wish

>no Fairy Meat
are you even trying?
>>
>>44597683
was interested in HGB

why is it level 6?

also, HGB but no BT? WTFWYT!???

>Betty and Veronica meet the Punisher
What?
>>
ok, it seems in this thread motherfuckers can't define Tiers.

just because you heard of a kickstarter doesn't make it X tier...a lot of those KS games are identical in complexity.

juts becasue you like a game doesn't make it tier infinity.

Time Wizards is Tier 4
most KS wargames are a solid 1 or 2
>>
>>44598719
The reason people keep placing Time Wizards at tiers 5+ are because
1. the rules are super complicated
2. conceptually, the game is very, very strange
but the most important reason is
3. any comprehensive attempt at codifying the rules by /tg/ can only be partially successful at best, because the real rules of Los Magos del Tiempos have been lost in time due to the drunkenness of a Mexican anon and his amigos. Only those who can pierce the veil know the secrets of time wizardry.
So, yeah, it's kind of out there. Seriously, who do you know that's actually played the thing?
>>
>>44578744
neckbeard awakened if you count co-building a friends homebrew.

If not, True Neckbeard, due to Fiascoing once.

Also if Victory belongs on here, it'd probably be True Neckbeard levels too, considering the comprehensive, practically accounting-based system it has for building custom powers, so yeah... definitely there.
>>
>>44598950
>>44578744
Yeah, I gotta admit, Fiasco isn't exactly rules-heavy. Why's it so low? Obscurity?
>>
>>44599326
that and the fact that it requires joint storytelling, not just "I am my character and do what's in my character's best interests"

Which is a major problem for many newcomers.
>>
>>44586564
Existentialism

its like nihilism, but instead of just saying "there is no meaning, its all dust in the wind" you say "okay, sure, but you can make some pretty nice stuff with dust. if life isn't going to give me a meaning, I'll make my own."

I don't think you get the intent of that list m8. They're by far more popular and well known than t4, but less popular than t2.
>>
>these tier lists are based off of how popular the game is, as opposed to the actual quality of the system itself

It's just hipster circle jerking.
>>
>>44601690

>Tier 1 babby detected
>>
>>44601690
> popularity of board games and quality are separate things and do not contribute to each other

You do know some of the more streamlined games are popular for a reason, right?
>>
>>44601867

Not him but seriously fuck you don't even try to start this argument

These charts are meant for nothing more than to denote how autismally deep into a given subculture you are, or as that other fag so eloquently put it, how big a hipster you are. NOTHING MORE, NOTHING LESS

I REPEAT, DO NOT TRY TO MAKE IT ABOUT QUALITY. THAT IS THE DUMBEST FUCKING ARGUMENT YOU COULD EVER TRY TO START.
>>
>>44579013
Me too man.
>The Last Remnant
What exactly made this level 4 tier?
>>
>>44601405
Maybe Dungeon World in particular should go to tier 2. It's infinitely more popular than any other *World game.
>>
>>44583587
Does it actually have an official translation yet? Would prefer a licensed product vs. A fan project.
>>
>>44585545
Assumed tier 6 since the rules are garbage and the weapons don't have stats.
>>
>>44577176
So...

Why am I at the bottom again? I mean FATAL is pretty famous due to it's infamy.
>>
>>44585767
is a bit odd yeah.
>>
>>44576804

Last Remnant is deeper than DS? Sure. Okay. Cz you can't spam fuck out of black hole and cake Last Remnant at all...
>>
>>44578235
Board games also include shit like Axis and Allies which I'd put at Tier 4 or 5.
>>

>d20 Call of Cthulhu
The system was shit of course, but the chapter explaining methods for effectively running a horror game is one of the best examples of good GM advice I've seen
>>
>>44603037
I've always said the same thing. Tynes did a great job distancing the Mythos from the usual Derleth bullshit in that book too, it's a shame it's all lumped in with Monte Cook's godawful handling of the system.
>>
>>44587133
I play MTG and Pokemon TCG. While MTG is definitely more complex, Pokemon is definitely not just normie kidtrash. I'd say tier 2.

Was D&D4E ever a level 0?
My group took a poo on 3.5 and never looked back, so I thought maybe everyone else abandoned their splatfest for a miniature wargame instead.
>>
>>44587205
It's a different sort of phony, IMO, although I don't have the words exactly to describe. I prefer it over the non-anonymity version, which is why I'm here.
