Haha superior Taurian Butte Hold!

Reposting my request for feedback about the balance between these lances.

>Lance 1:
AS7-D Atlas (4/5) – 1897
ZEU-6T Zeus (4/5) – 1436
HCT-3F Hatchetman (4/5) – 854
COM-2D Commando (4/5) – 541
Total: 4728

>Lance 2:
BLR-1G Battlemaster (4/5) – 1519
GHR-5H Grasshopper (4/5) – 1427
TBT-5S Trebuchet (4/5) – 996
HER-2S Hermes II (4/5) – 784
Total: 4726

>Lance 3:
AWS-8Q Awesome (4/5) – 1605
CPLT-C1 Catapult (4/4) – 1609
VND-1R Vindicator (4/5) – 1024
SDR-5V Spider (4/5) – 622
Total: 4860

>Lance 4:
BNC-3S Banshee (4/5) – 1751
JM6-S JagerMech (4/5) – 901
WTH-1 Whitworth (4/5) – 982
DV-6M Dervish (4/5) – 1146
Total: 4780

I did play a test game between Lance 1 and Lance 3 in MegaMek, but it wasn't a very good sample since I was using Forced Withdrawal and the Awesome got two engine crits from a lucky SRM on turn 2.
>>
>>44543478
Lance 2 has a serious overdependence on Medium Lasers and SRMs. Lance 3, meanwhile, has too much ranged firepower and too little point-blank. I dunno how a fight between the two would turn out, but it'd certainly be a mess.

Lance 4 has the problem that all SW lances with the Banshee-S has: the Banshee carries the entire lance. Without it, the remaining lance is junk and gets eaten up by any of the other lances minus their assault. Unsure how I'd fix it, but I definitely wouldn't want that lance.

Maybe I could swap the Grasshopper and the Catapult between them? Or the Treb and the Vindi?

My problem here is that my Assault 'mechs in Lyran colours are the Atlas, a Zeus and a pair of Banshees.
So, I'm not sure how to change it either, except by swapping down to a Banshee-E and just giving it better other 'mechs instead.
The other Lyran 'mechs still in the arsenal are a Rifleman, Dragon, Enforcer, Assassin, Clint and Panther.

yeah. I kinda picked them for the "y'all can go to hell and we'll go to texas" clan partially because I liked them and partially because I figured they out off all the clans had the highest chance at becoming actual human beings when removed from the clan environment
>>44544036
have you considered the Banshee-3MC variant? it pulls some HS to swap the AC/5 for a /10. it's a canon variant, but it would work just as well as a lyran "custom" model.
it's better than the -3E but not nearly as stronk as the -3S
>>
>>44544285
>Banshee-3MC
Ah, that one might be an option.

In that case, I might also toss the Enforcer back in instead of the Worthless, or maybe a Rifleman instead of the Jagermech.
>>
>>44544036
>Maybe I could swap the Grasshopper and the Catapult between them? Or the Treb and the Vindi?
How about:
>AWS-8Q Awesome
>CPLT-C1 Catapult
>TBT-5S Trebuchet
>HER-2S Hermes II
Total: 4784

>BLR-1G BattleMaster
>GHR-5H Grasshopper
>VND-1R Vindicator
>SDR-5V Spider
Total: 4592 (adjust piloting/gunnery as needed)

That way the armor gets evened out a bit; otherwise, Lance 2 has way too much armor compared to Lance 3.

As for Lance 4...hmm...what about:
>BNC-3M Banshee
>RFL-3N Rifleman
>ENF-4R Enforcer
>DV-6M Dervish
Total: 4812

Not ideal but I don't really know what else to do here.
>>
>>44544346
Those swaps seem decent.

Maybe run the BNC-3MC instead of the BNC-3M?
>>
>>44545175
Yeah, that sounds good. Chose the -3M before I saw >>44544285 post, and to be honest I'd completely forgotten about the -3MC.
>>
>>44544346

So, here's what I've ended up with now:

>Lance 1:
AS7-D Atlas (4/5) – 1897
ZEU-6T Zeus (4/4) – 1651
HCT-3F Hatchetman (4/5) – 854
COM-2D Commando (4/5) – 541
Total: 4943

>Lance 2:
BLR-1G Battlemaster (3/5) – 1822
GHR-5H Grasshopper (4/5) – 1427
VND-1R Vindicator (4/5) – 1024
SDR-5V Spider (4/4) – 715
Total: 4988

>Lance 3:
AWS-8Q Awesome (4/5) – 1605
CPLT-C1 Catapult (4/4) – 1609
TBT-5S Trebuchet (4/5) – 996
HER-2S Hermes II (4/5) – 784
Total: 4994

>Lance 4:
BNC-3MC Banshee (4/4) – 1710
RFL-3N Rifleman (4/5) – 1039
ENF-4R Enforcer (4/5) – 1032
DV-6M Dervish (4/5) – 1146
Total: 4927

I might try a few test games with them on MegaMek tomorrow.
>>
>>44546218
Looks pretty good. If you want to spread out piloting/gunnery upgrades across the board, though, I think I'd replace the Zeus' piloting upgrade with a piloting upgrade for the Hatchetman and a gunnery upgrade for the Commando.

>There had been positive points to the day. He and Omi had managed to share part of a run down the mountain on one of the easier slopes. Though she and her family were staying at one of the chalet's guest houses, Victor had seen very little of her, so the run was welcome time spent together. Strictly a beginner, Omi took to skiing with enthusiasm and a lot of good humor.
>Victor recalled her going down in thick powder snow, then coming up with her face covered in white. She brushed the snow away with a laugh, and Victor couldn't think when he'd ever seen her look more beautiful.
>At another point, when he waited on line for the chair lift, a reporter asked a barbed question about Omi and his relationship with her. Even before Victor had a chance to consider an answer, a man stabbed his skis and poles into the snow, and stalked out toward the reporter.
>"Have you no shame?" he asked angrily. "Have you no decency? This man has the toughest job in all of the Inner Sphere and you're asking after his love life? Don't you realize that what he does on his own time is of absolutely no interest to anyone with enough neurons to form a synapse? The measure of a man is not in who he dates or what he says, but what he does. He kicked the Falcons off Coventry and rescued Lady Omi's brother from the Clans at Teniente. The latter's enough to make them friends, and the former means you should have more respect for him."
>The man's spirited defense prompted applause and catcalls from the others in line, bringing a smile to Victor's face. He tried to thank the man, offering to pay for his skiing, offering him dinner, but the man refused. "Look, Highness, if not for you and your father and your mother, we'd all be Clanners now. I appreciate the offer of a free dinner, but the fact is you've made certain I can be free to have dinner. Defending you here was the least I could do for you."

It cribs heavily from LCARS, yeah. It was pretty common in anime in the era - if you look up the opening cutscene of Xenogears the Captain they stole from Macross actually uses the correct arming sequence for an LCARS slef-destruct, complete with sound effects (though no voice authorization, oddly).

>>44550082
>Design challenge: Make a heavy "crab" and a light "Crab" type mech.
Honestly, the Lancelot feels very "crabby", and that one triple-laser GGF Blakie Locust or the Malak with the arm-guns is what I'd do for the light. It's really just cosmetic mods unless you want some kind of dual-capped LPPC 35-tonner.

Yeah, that's true. And yeah, you can certainly drop an ER Medium to mount one. In fact, if you want to mount one instead, go right ahead. I won't stop one.

But I'm not arguing against a command console. I'm saying that a +1 to initiative isn't "functionally worthless" and is more valuable in my eyes than a BAP or a compact gyro.

Active Probes in general are wasted tonnage unless using Hideen Units rules and nobody has Stealth capabilities (rare) or you're using Double-Blind rules (extremely rare unless players are using MegaMek to speed this up).

They're nice for fluff and all, but in 99.99% of cases you're better not having one and adding MLs instead.

Albatross is basically a Knights of the Inner Sphere exclusive though. I think in FM: FWL (maybe we should shorten this to FML?) there is a grand total of one other unit that has the Albatross and that was as a gift from the Knights.

From 3055u:
"the first Albatrosses became the signature
’Mech of the Knights of the Inner Sphere. Subsequently, Operation Guerrero and the counterassault against the Clans led to more widespread deployment. It remains largely limited to prestige FWLM units, but a few have also been exported to the League’s close allies."
So more widespread than the FM indicates, at least by the early 3060s.

There we go. /btg/ doesn't get much in the way of writefags, maybe lewd would encourage them. What say our namefags (and anyone who wants to adopt a name strictly for this purpose) have a writing challenge? Strawpoll to determine "best story" winner? Say, make the deadline next Sunday evening, and they all get compiled via pastebin so we have something to look forward to on Monday morning.

Munnin? Best writer in the challenge gets a "notable pilot" writeup in the TRO?
>>
>>44559140

I...might actually adopt a name for that. The thing is there'd have to be two categories, one for funnylewd, and one for regularlewd. Otherwise, like all fanfiction, it'll just devolve into a contest about who can sexualize the most memes.

I'd actually want to see who can legitimately write GOOD erotic fiction in the Battletech universe, as well as critting out my side torsos from "Crusader-chan, my hip actuators are moving on their own!" tier writing.

>But is this really a road we want /btg/ to travel?

I'd just like some writing practice, and for whatever reason, this actually intrigued me. Making sex flow naturally from characters in BattleTech actually seems pretty hard (phrasing!) given how little emotional detail is given. I figure the challenge is in writing a short story that *feels* like an official BattleTech work, but still includes lewdness.

Which is just off-the-wall enough to have inspired 2 chapters and a hair over 3000 words so far this morning.

Because some civil war fought by an ass-backwards nascent state over whether or not people (with certain skin colour) were property or not trumps every other war before or since in tactical and strategic import, and everyone in a nation of Space Germans studies the shit out of it. The funny thing is the Star League named units and warships after things from the American Civil War, so obviously it was still a part of their military culture & history to some degree. Therefore it makes sense that if the SL remembered it, worlds in the Terran Hegemony were aware of it at least superficially, as were other member-states.

The Lyrans get a very Germanic vibe in the novels and SBs.

>>44566318

>The funny thing is the Star League named units and warships after things from the American Civil War,

The Star League was supposed to be Space America. It still doesn't make much sense that in 1, 000 years of war they couldn't find new names from an IC perspective. From an OOC perspective, the explanation is that the game was primarily written by Americans, for Americans.

>>
>>44573594

NEA's talking about when the Duchy of Andurian signed an alliance with the MOC and broke away from the FWL in the 3030s. The FWL let them sit around for a few years, then moved troops back in and reclaimed the duchy.

It does technically qualify as a purple burd slapfight. IIRC it fucked up the Andurian Defender formation (5-6 regiments) pretty badly.

The Andurien crisis is one affair. Duncan's scheming arose due to it and was part of it. No one said it didn't count.
With regards to the time involved, that was part of a deliberate strategy to let the duchy bleed itself without overextending FWLM resources in the face of the FedCom alliance.

Inefficient for what they're supposed to do and incredibly heavy. Amusingly, the Small is the hottest Small Laser. If they had a -1 to hit and did +1 damage to specialty armors (along with slimming down the Large and Small by a ton and a half ton respectively) and lost some overall heat costs, they might be a less useful alternative, but an alternative nonetheless. As it stands now they're borderline useless except for the Large and even that's iffy.

But the RE-Laser does do better than the standard laser. On a ton-for-ton basis with total damage assigned to a single location it does not. Of course, the PPC and ER PPC also lose to the standard large laser in that analysis, don't they?

RE-lasers are developments of IS pulse lasers and should be viewed as improvements on those weapons. They are not the best weapons out there, they may never have improvements in technology, but they are not worthless.
>>
>>44574974
Hi AK. I have a question for you: How have you avoided becoming an hero for so long?
>>
>>44574974
They're X-Pulse lasers with less heat on the Large, but more heat on the Small and Medium.
The small does more damage than the regular but that's not that great with its 1/2/3 range.

In exchange for "upgrading" from pulse lasers, RE lasers lose accuracy bonus, take more weight, take more slots, generally add more heat, and have no reach higher than the X-Pulse for what?
No lowered damage against Ferro-Lamellor (which IIRC is rarely seen by I.S.), Hardened armour (making it efficient to those chasses but they are also not common), and reflective (I struggle to remember a chassis with the stuff).

The "bonuses" are by far outweighed by the weaknesses and LOST features of Pulse (or even X-Pulse) lasers.
I find them to be useless, but that might just be how I'm looking at it.
>>
>>44575295

May as well just use a regular laser of the same variety, or regular (or X-)Pulse lasers. All are blatantly better.

>but i was only pretending to be AK!

>>44575362

Specialty armours in general are pretty rare. Off the top of my head all I can think of that will be vulnerable to R-E Lasers is the Rokurokurokurokuwhatever, Shiro, Grand Turtle, Mad Cat IV/Savage Wolf, Mad Dog IV/Vulture IV, and since it's just been released the custom Dragoon variant from TP: EE. There's a lot more 'Mechs with R-E Lasers than there are units with armour they're meant to be used against.

Plus the obvious answer to opponents using Reflective armour is to use Ballistic and Missile weapons against them. 'Mechs with Hardened armour generally pay so much for it that you can kite them or ignore them (what can the Grand Turtle or Rokurokuroku do to you really?).

ASFs kind of get a pass on this since the downsides of Reflec mostly don't apply to them and R-E Lasers will produce Thresholds fairly often. However, you may as well use a mix of ammo-dependant weapon types, especially the LGR since that thing is fuckballs amazing in Aero games, instead of R-E Lasers. The BA argument is fucked from the beginning, if you're worried about Reflec-armoured BA what you bring is AoE weapons (purely to damage the whole unit, I know they don't double their damage), Plasma weapons, or Infernoes.

TL; DR: R-E Lasers are already outperformed in their own niche by existing weapons. They're completely shit at their supposed job, and even worse at everything else.

If they had a -1 to-hit modifier they'd at least be sort of OK at what they were intended to do but still shit outside of that. And that's before you consider the relative rarity of designs with specialty armour types.

Correct. Did a quick and easy work up for you. This can get pretty silly real quick by moving the masters to the arms, and plugging in an xxl for more speed or what have you. But sticking huge computer mass into the extremities just feels wrong.

Actually the xxl would fit no problem, I had more space than I realized. Thanks lack of coffee for making me look dumb.

Testing some of those 4-mech lances I asked for your help about in MegaMek.

It immediately reminded me why I love BT, with a Banshee being headshotted by a Commando in the first game and an Awesome getting its head kicked in by a Battlemaster in the second.

The lances do seem pretty decently balanced, based on the handful of games I've played so far.
>>
>>44584773

Anon, no. I will spare you the pain and heartache you will otherwise suffer.

C3 is not worth the BV you pay for it. For the same BV of a 4/5 Company you can improve everyone's skills to 3/5 or better and give zero fucks about how many ECM suites the enemy bought or whether they've killed a Lance/Company Command 'Mech, all the while getting similar to-hit numbers.

By all means field 'Mechs with C3. Just don't make the mistake of networking them.

C3i and to an extent BC3 are better. At least with C3i you don't need to worry that much about having a C3i node destroyed, and the BC3 invulnerability to basic ECM is nice... but again heavily overcosted under BV to the point of being even less effective than normal C3.

BV has always been a suggestion - a way of approximating balance if someone wanted to give it a try. And BTech has never been balanced. The Clans existing is a good example of that.

It's certainly not a typical wargaming 'points' system. It's a bolt on system because people demanded something.

C3 suffers by default because most of the c3 slave mechs don't mount an ECM suite for ECCM duties... plus the BV markup. But building a c3 company with at least one ECM mech per lance (preferably two before Angel suites) makes it pretty robust, but now more expensive BV wise.

BC3 slaves are painfully heavy and take up an uncomfortable amount of space. Same with Masters, crit wise anyway. 6 crits is painful.

My solution is to toss in a pair of cheap ECM hovercraft (harassers usually) or VTOLs so I don't have to take mechs that don't do what I need them to do for that lance.

CST-6Y: 65t, 4/6/0 (XLFE), 12 DHS. Mounts a Gauss Rifle in the RT, large and medium lasers in each arm. It's an alpha-baby with a Gauss Rifle and full armour for its tonnage - you can do far worse.

Arctic Wolf.

>No fuck you, here's 44 SRMs.
>Also they're NARCed.
>>
>>44601063

It's a VERY good medium-range fighter for its mass. The XL hurts it in full-on brawling, but IIRC there's no real way to match the loadout without it. I look at the Cestus much like an overgrown medium trooper Mech (Enforcer, Centurion, etc). Plug it into the same roles as you'd plug one of those into, and it's hard to go too wrong. About the only lance types it doesn't contribute super-well to are Recon lances; even Fire Support lances can use it because it's an acceptable close-range bodyguard and the Gauss lets it contribute downrange.

But yes, the model is excruciatingly terrible. I own four, and every one of them required at least a half-hour's work with a dremel trying to get the goddamn Gauss onto the chest and leveling out the rest of the slip.

Did they add BV to the boxed set? Because Total Warfare isn't basic, it's (to quote its back cover) "a reference work for players who already know the game."

>>
Anyone else just so pleasantly amazed by how far the Confederation has come? In 3025 I don't think it could build a mech over 60 tons, and was struggling to produce what little it could.

Around a century later and we have the Gùn, Duan Gung, Yinghuochong, Sha Yu, Yao Lien, Men Shen, Ti Ts'ang, Jinggau, Shen Yi, Tian-Zong, Lao Hu, Lu Wei Bing, Yu Huang, Vandal, Thunder, Huron Warrior, Snake, etc, etc. Truly Xin Sheng knows no end.

What's your favorite Capellan mech?
>>
>>44604133
So obviously, this is the MOST worthless thing to quibble over, but:
No. Under that scheme, Introductory would be "basic." TW is the Tournament Rules, and tournaments pretty well automatically aren't basic.
>>
>>44604382
"tournament rules" actually gives away that TW is the base rule. Being "basic" has nothing to do with being "simple". The Intro Box is just a mean to teach the game.
>>
>>44604445
Why are you equating "tournament" with "base" rules? There's no reason to consider Industrial Mechs and WiGEs to be "base" rules, for instance.

>So obviously, this is the MOST worthless thing to quibble over, but:

> tournaments pretty well automatically aren't basic.
It wasn't asked what rules are "basic" it was asked what rules are "optional". And considering that any rule is optional outside of an environment like a tournament, then the " tournament level rules" are pretty definitely the only rules that are ever really mandatory...

And to take it back to the point of the argument, balancing by BV is in that set.

Hey, fast question for the gallery. Does anyone know if there's been a clarification on whether or not the Marksman SPA allows you to target the head of an active Mech?

The Marksman SPA:
"The Marksman Ability enables a MechWarrior... to potentially hit any desired location on a target. A pilot or gunner with the Marksman SPA can make a special Aimed Shot attack as if using a targeting computer(see p. 143,TW)...The Marksman Ability may be combined with a targeting computer or enhanced-imaging technology; if the warrior's unit is equipped with such items and they are active when this ability is used, the Aimed Shot attack receives a +2 roll modifier."

On one hand:
>...to potentially hit ANY desired location on a target
This would allow shots to the head.

On the other hand:
>...can make a special Aimed Shot attack as if using a targeting computer
This would disallow shots to the head of a mobile Mech.

Has there been anything on the OF about this? My initial response would be be to disallow headshots with the SPA, because the first line feels like a "fluff/description" line and not actual rules. But I can understand it being read in either fasion.
>>
>>44618120
>Has there been anything on the OF about this?
Not that I'm aware of.

>My initial response would be be to disallow headshots with the SPA, because the first line feels like a "fluff/description" line and not actual rules.
Yeah, that's exactly how I read it. This is why I like how Battlefront handles rules/fluff in Flames of War: Rules are in italics, fluff is in plaintext (though I wish it was reversed). Makes it VERY clear what bits are rules and what bits are descriptive.
>>
>>44618120
I honestly doubt it would allow head shots; the TC rules, even from the very start were intended to prevent "Vet pilot with TC and CERPPCs/GRs kills 1d2 mechs per round", and I cannot see them letting a SPA do what they specifically made TCs not do, especially as SPAs don't have any of the associated costs that TCs do
>>
>>44617786
>>44617802
I'm like half done a kai/victor slashjob.

>>
>>44618563
Though being RPG oriented, SPAs were probably made more with player vs OPFOR in mind, not PvP.

Like you said, they don't cost anything and that alone can make a lot of them broken, setting aside what they actually do, which is often plenty broken anyway, especially if you stick somebody in the right mech. Fucking Jumping Jacks in IJJ mechs, goddamn.
>>
>>44619289
you are right, but even still; a "instakills on demand with the right gun" SPA is a bit beyond even what they seem to be willing to throw in for even PvOPFOR
>>
>>44619309
Aimed shots don't automatically hit the aimed for location though. And aimed shots at heads (which is possible even without tcomps at immobile mechs) hit you with a +3, in addition to the +3 of of the aimed shot at non-immobile target in the first place, and the Marksman SPA requires you both sit still and only fire a single weapon.

While it's still broken, I don't think its quite *that* broken.
