I finished a campaign recently where the players had found a room that basically can randomly shift between planes at will, but also carrying a giant core of magic that was going to explode with enough force to vaporize everything in sight. Party has to get away, but the paladin realizes that the based way is to shift to a plane where nobody else can get hurt. Somebody had to stay behind, and he volunteered. As he died, he did pray for the survival of him and the party member in there with him, but I didn't reveal whether he did at the end of the session.

I should leave him dead, right? It's a better story that way.

If he does turn up, have it be at a suitable time and have the player reintroduce him.
Or he could become a legacy character in your campaigns, unstable due to the magic he phases in and out of planes on a regular basis, but wherever you go there will be stories of him showing up at just the right moment to fight off evil and fading back into the Aether once the battle is over.

Just make the player reroll a new character and turn the paladin into doomrider/mysterious stranger.

Get the same number x times in a row and he appears and helps for x amount of rounds based on the roll.

Make it so that the damage he takes from previous encounters will still be on him when he reappears later on. Tell the players that for the paladin, each appearance is continuous and he will eventually tire out/need healing the longer this goes on.

Make it a 4d4 roll or something if you want him to appear more often or maybe 10d20 if you want a little extra suspense.

Although the thing was that the drow had gotten the tar beaten out of him against the BBEG and had disgraced himself in the eyes of lolth, so in an effort to do one good deed before he died (the player was retiring him, got bored of playing small-e Chaotic evil) he tossed the paladin the wineskin he had left and the last bit of dialogue of the session was "Nobody should have to die alone. Even you." And I thought it was a nice way to end it.

Bringing either character back might spoil it.
