Disclaimer : if you don't like light-hearted, kinda stupid campaigns or D&D 3.5, this thread is not made for you.

Hi there everyone !

DM here, my group and I are going to finish a really dark and depressing campaign of Cthulhu meets WoD and I want to thank them for the great (if depressing) time we had this year with a fun, not serious at all small campaign of D&D 3.5 with a lot of random tables, funny ideas and pic related as a magic dungeon.

I already have the basis : a rift in reality happens in my everyday 3.5 setting (which is often silly already) and a group of people (don't even need to be adventurers) gets trapped in a strange dimension that has unpredicatble rules and they need to get out of before going as mad as the people they find there.

First of all, I'm gonna use the Grog of Substantial Whimsy (TM) as the only source of hydration in the dungeon (since it is the place where they invented it and that's why everything has gone crazy).

Second, I need you ! I have more than 750 rooms to fill and even if I don't 'plan' them all because there is only so much hours in the day, I need your ideas of weird encouters, elaborate devices and traps all in a spirit of really simple enjoyment.

I'll post some ideas I already have during the day and read you with pleasure.

For those who don't know : http://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/Grog_of_Substantial_Whimsy_(3.5e_Equipment)

OP here

Here's one of my ideas

>The Cone of Uncertainty

In the middle of a room, there's a cone on a pedestal, protected by thick glass. It appears to be made of wood and painted bright green. It is around 40cm tall and the base has a diameter of about 20cm.

The only power this object has is that it confuses and fascinates people. Why is it here ? Why is it protected ? What is it ? What does it do ? Why would someone put it on a pedestal ?

The answers being : because the mages created it by mistake, because people would spend their lifes wondering about it if it was in the open, it's a cone made of wood, nothing in particular, because even trying to hide it never worked since the mages were so fascinated about it they had to put it were they could see it.

Another one for you

>The Sphinx

We all know the classic tale of the Sphinx that tells riddles and eat those who can't answer but this one has been there for so long and has met so many crazy mages that could answer his riddles that he doesn't have any ideas left.

So instead of telling the players riddles she will ask them to tell her riddles and if she can't answer, let them pass through.
>>
>>53569258
And another one

>The Dice Room

Take a cubic room inhabited by weird flying creatures and have the PC fighting them... Except each time something looses hp in the room, gravity shifts to a random wall determined by assigning a number to each wall and throwing a D6.

Steal plots and characters from things the players don't know about and change the names.

Then steal single features and archetypes your players don't know about, and change the names.

Then steal broad concepts and genre conciets, and change the names.

Then steal nothing at all. And change the names.

I take modules and adventure paths and change up encounters and NPCs until it looks decent because I'm goddawful at making overarching plots and basic encounter ideas but my players seem to enjoy my stupid NPCs for some reason.

/tg/ I come to you with questions:

A: How many kinds of non porous stone are there (I know soapstone is one kind) and are any good for building castles/fortifications from, or at least pipes for channeling water (non porous means bacteria and such can't colonize it, so less chance of illnesses spreading)

B: What is the best "primitive" way of carving stone, especially giant stone blocks directly from the quarry? I know vaguely of one technique, where you use a copper tube to slowly grind a hole in a stone block. So would you be able to use a copper saw to carve giant blocks for building walls?

C: How would a technologically primitive people be able to make cement from scratch?

D: How did the ancient Romans and other people make glass for windows without electricity/advanced tools and such?

Math nerds. I need your help.

So, a game that I'm playing has a mechanic where you roll 1d6,1d8 for a move. If you roll higher on the 1d6 than the 1d8, you suffer a very serious penalty (stun).

What are the odds on this? Trying to figure it out has been absolutely destroying my brain. The math is entirely beyond my comprehension.
48 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
Also, to explain further, the stun penalty is entire the DM's invention and I feel like he borked the math on this because my character spends a lot of time in stuns. He told me the odds of the 1d6 being higher than the 1d8 are 12% but that doesn't seem right to me at all.

Is he fucking with me?
>>
>>53567939
We're gonna add up all the safe combinations to derive the probability of a stun.

If you roll a 1 in the d6, you're safe, so that's 1/6
2[d6] has 7 safe options on the d8, so that's 7/48
3[d6] has 6 safe options, so 1/8
4[d6] has 5, so 5/48
5[d6] has 4, so 1/12
6[d6] has 3, so 1/16

1/16 + 1/12 + 5/48 + 1/8 + 7/48 + 1/6 = 0.6875 = ~69% chance of action succeeding

ergo, you're looking at a ~31% chance of being stunned each time you make the 1d6 1d8 check
>>
>>53567880
Here are the odds, source is my statistics degree.

1/6 chance of a 0% chance of stun
1/6 chance for a 12.5% chance of stun
1/6 chance for a 25% chance of stun.
1/6 chance for a 37.5 percent chance of stun
1/6 chance for a 50% chance of stun
1/6 chance for a 62.5% chance of stun.

(Assuming that if you roll doubles there is no stun).
That averages out to a 31.25% chance of stun each round.

If you get stunned when rolling 2 of the same number, you actually have a 46.75% chance of stun.

Your GM is terrible at math.

>Lameass D&D refluff.

Barbarian: Strong, simple sea-faring sort. Gets a little crazy when the cannons start firing but you can count on them to lift fallen timbers off your leg in a pinch and they're good to have at your side in a scuffle. Scary and intimidating when they want to be. Probably an outlaw, might just be uneducated and temperamental.

Bard: Always a niche for the musician. Drummer keeping the oars in sync, Fiddler keeping spirits high in calm waters, Warrior-Skald whose sea-chanties keep the Barbarians laughing in the middle of a boarding party or Dirgesinger whose siren-songs sink ships and keep the skeletons manning the sails.

Cleric: Priest at sea needs a reason to be there. Aquatic deity, adventurous doctrine, monetary wealth for commercial patrons, etc. Whether they worship the things in the depths or the sea and the skies or the money they travel for, faith will see you through many a stormy night if it's strong enough.

Druid: As Cleric, but much more likely to worship the sea, the sky, or the things in the water and the like. Might also be an exiled fire-focused druid charged never to return until he sets the seas ablaze. If you want to never be becalmed or plan on fishing as you go, grab a few of these. Might work really well as a Captain with an uncanny sense of the tides and reefs of the region.

Fighter: Anywhere you go, stuff needs fighting. Ship-guards, ship-raiders, monster-security, fish-people-discouragement, etc. More common on the docks than the ships themselves unless they favor a fighting style that fits well with the sea's circumstances.

Monk: Very Orderly Second-Mates can pull this off just fine. They run a tight ship because they live a strict life for themselves, but they'll hold the crew together like few others can. Lost their things overboard so many times that they've learned to make do with their bare hands in many cases.

My DM friend will be hosting a new mini campaign for a group of new players plus me, something rules light to introduce them to 5eDnD/tabletop games in general. He is going to be lenient with character creations. So I'm going to take this as a opportunity to try out a idea I always wanted to play, a Fairy Druid. I don't doubt there being a problem, but I want to after this is over to move this pc into our regular games. So I want to flesh out the game mechanism/abilities for it beforehand. Something concrete for how things like fly/inventory/damage will work. I been reading around, and there are some things that might work.

Have anyone here played a tiny sized pc, or had a player play one? Thoughts?

Continued

My thoughts for how the game might handle a fairy character.
Flying:a) play a wingless fairy and ignore unless cast fly spell
b) max fly height and fly endurance based on level/strength modifier. Suffer exhaustion if exceed endurance limit. at high lvl remove limits?
c) Cast 'Fly' on self as racial ability, needs short/long? rest to recharge
d) leaves behind a light trail when moving. disadvantage on moving stealth checks

Inventory: a)entrust other players/animal companions with loot, have a small carry weight
b) 1min fairy ritual to shrink any standard items to fit in bag, item must be able to be stored in a normal character bag

Equipment a) Have DM include tiny size items in loot-table
b)same as inventory. 1min ritual to shrink items, no fast looting
c)tiny sized items must be custom crafted by a npc/the pc
d)weapons/magic? have reduced damage, but improve accuracy
>>
I like pixies but I cannot stand halflings and warcraftesque gnomes.
>>
Yeah, here's what you do: don't. If you want to be tiny, pick a small race and flavour it as a tiny one that is mechanically exactly the same as the small race you chose. Do anything else and it will fall apart.

Chris Perkins has said structurally the next adventure we're getting is like Curse of Strahd (in his interview on Encounter Roleplay).

He's also said there'll be a unique t-rex in the adventure. That the main villain will be unsympathetic but it's underlings will be multidimensional and multifaceted characters.

i just try and be as cheesy as possible when it comes to character names
>>
For something in the real world or based on a real world culture, I look up national sports teams.

For fantasy stuff, I'll pick a relevant culture to warp something from, or just go full fantasy ridiculous. Or sometimes choose a thematically appropriate word for the character and warp it into something that sounds like a name.
>>
Lots of fantasy and even sci-fi settings use nicknames as surnames. I.e., stuff like "Blackmane, Hellscream, Brightblade, Brightflame," etc. So my surnames are [adjective][noun]. Given names are based on what culture I think the character's race is related to.

Tangentially related, but I kind of liked how the original Space Jockey seemed to be some kind of biomechanical organism that was fused to its control station. I thought that made for some interesting possibilities on how their species developed and functioned.

If they had to expand on this setting, it might've been interesting for some human explorers to come across a large orbital structure or moon where we could see more of these things either fused to more control stations or silently stalking around and cultivating xeno eggs. There wouldn't even have to be a lot of monsters or jump scares, just humans walking around vast dark halls and tunnels and the Jockeys obliviously doing things beyond our logic for reasons we'll never fully understand. What was their relationship with the xenomorphs? Did they create them to be weapons or tools or were they an experimental life form? Or maybe something else entirely that has no human analogue?

For me, the way Ridley Scott made it so the Jockeys turned out to be "engineers" who looked more like humans instead of giant elephant-like creatures, and even created humans while David was able to decipher their language, fly their ships and even replicate their xenomorph experiments all felt a little too convenient and lacked a lot of the mystery of the original movie. Where before we were just a minor species that happened to stumble by freak accident on something we shouldn't have, now we're suddenly the star creation of the Space Jockeys/engineers who'd actually been looking for us with very clear but asinine and not particularly interesting or compelling motivations.

Does anyone else feel this way? I understand Ridley wanted to come back to this universe and explore it, but I feel like there was a way to do it without making the everything seem so small and limited and intentional. There's a way to leave audiences with questions without making them frustrated that they didn't get any answers.
>>
>>53565976
Yeah scott ruined the franchise

How do you make food MATTER in an RPG? I don't think I've ever played in a campaign where it wasn't just handwaved, but food is really kind of the most important thing in life after maybe water and breathing.

The problem is that travel is mostly handwaved, and food is another number to keep track of. The closest thing I can think of is maybe a system like in roguelikes, where your hunger stats goes up/down, and the only way to replenish is by eating, but I'm not convinced that would have the desired impact.

I also think it would help immersion if done properly. If players are desperately searching for their next meal, an audience with the king where they eat roast pheasant or whatever would be exciting for that alone.

Just to be clear: I'm looking for MECHANICAL tricks, not flavor text and descriptions. You can describe something as beautifully as you want, but unless it affects the players mechanically then for all intents and purposes you're just jacking off and it never existed

IIRC in most editions of D&D, you have to eat a pound of food a day or suffer penalties. That's usually not a problem, as food can be obtained easily.

In campaign settings like Dark Sun or the old Fantasy Flight one Midnight, where food is treated as a currency and thus literally treasured, it becomes much more important to keep track of.
>>
>>53565909
If you want to go all the way then make it so not eating certain foods can make you sick over time. Not enough Vitamin C, Vitamin A, fiber, carbohydrates, etc can lead to bad health.
>>
>>53565909
Keep track of rations and apply penalties for starvation
Eating rotting or poorly handled food carries a penalty
Food is expensive enough / PC's are poor enough that a substantial chunk of PC wealth go's to paying for food
High quality food comes with mechanical benefits
