A group of friends wants to get into roleplaying. They're all complete rookies - not just have they never played an RPG before, they've never even played an RPG video game. None of them have ever played Neverwinter Nights, nobody's ever heard of 40k.
What's the best system for them to pick up?
In other words, which RPG has the absolute best "beginner" product? One that fully teaches the players and GM what to do, while giving them the most fun doing it.
My first thought was one of those "one page" RPGs, but the more I thought about it, the more I suspected the group would be left sitting around a table wondering what the fuck they were meant to actually *do*.
>>53600204
1 page RPGs actually give you what to do. Lasers and Feelings generates an adventure and starts with a trouble.
That said, if you want something more complex, maybe something PbtA? It's kinda foolproof.

That's probably an advantage not a detriment.

Whatever happened to KoW? I was moderately interested in the game around the time WHFB went boom, but I haven't really heard about it since and haven't even seen anybody on /tg/ talk about it.
Is there a scene? Does anybody play it? Is it even alive at this point?
Is it a mini game? If so, that may be why it died off. Miniature wargames are just too expensive for what you get. So, it's no wonder that they are dying off. 40k was just a huge exception to the rule. It's all dying down to being niche even by /tg/ standards. Not sure what/if 40k is dying. I'm betting it will die off soon with 8th being as broken as it is and dumbed down even by 40k standards.
>>53597805
>>53597805
It let you use any minis you want as long as they're in the proper base size.
It even released a historical supplement not too long ago.

Second for I actually really like all the Primaris stuff.
Guess who bought herself the Limited Editon?
(Hint: it's me. I bought myself the limited edition)
Is it really that bad? Or is it just an unpopular preference?
I think with some power level adjustments and a better spread out spell list there would be nothing wrong with it.
>>53595252
There's nothing wrong with the idea behind it. But the most popular implementation of it adapted it very, very poorly.
>>53595252
What is Vancian casting exactly?
While we're at it, what are the other major types of casting ?
>>53595423
D&D style casting.
1. Magic is divided into distinct spells that have a clearly defined purpose and effect.
2. Spells are prepared in advance and set off during casting, and can only be used once.
3. Mages can only prepare so many spells at a time.
I don't really know about other major systems of casting because I'm an unapologetic d20fag.

What Starfinder class are you the most excited about? Why?

I'm hype for Soldier to see how well can Paizo rework Fighter. Maybe they'll even do a half-decent job.
>>53594835
I'm curious about the Solarion, but Mystics are always my go to class.
>>53594835
I'm most excited about the Soldier. We have needed an actually decent 1pp martial for a long, long time - Vigilante was a step in the right direction, but a lot of GMs that don't have ready-made access to the SRD during a game (such as about 95% of people who play around a tabletop rather than online) wouldn't allow it because it's nowhere close to core.
But a core class that's not only good, but actually looks fun? Sign me right the fuck up. It looks like it'll be a blast.
There are many ways to earn experience points: you earn a bunch by beating monsters, dealing with traps and puzzles, overcoming challenges, roleplaying your character, and "story awards". And that's all very well: completing weird adventures and seeing new places will teach you stuff.
But there are also games, especially older ones, where you gain experience when you find treasure. Sometimes that works - finding the stuff isn't necessarily easy or simple - but it's usually tied to the amount of gold rather than the amount of challenge, meaning you could just as well just trip to the stuff and gain the full reward. Stranger still, in many of these games it's a common rule (a houserule at the very least) to give more experience when you spend the gold in partying or helping the poor or other such things, rather than on immediately important matters like buying supplies and magic items.
All these considerations usually have a reason for why they work the way they do - early D&D was more about finding treasure than anything else, for instance - but any manner of in-universe explanation is rarely, if ever, offered. So how does it work, /tg/? How does stumbling upon a treasure chest teach you to be a better fighter? How come you learn something about thievery when you spend that money on ale and whores, but not if you just buy yourself a new sword?
I like to explain it out as morale.
Finding a huge pile of gold really cheers you up. Spending it on getting drunk even more so. Giving it to the poor gives you warm fuzzy feelings and reminds you what you are fighting for.
Your level isn't just your objective skill and fighting ability. A happy fighter fights harder than a sad glum one.
>>53594780
Yeah, R&R is pretty important. Adventuring is a job, and a tough, dangerous one at that. You have to be desperate, brave, or stupid to go crawling around in monster-infested dungeons for a living, rather than just farming turnips. And while buying better tools is important, so is actually enjoying your life, especially because you might end up impaled on a spear trap next time you go delving.

Quit your bitching, space yiffs player.
Sup /tg/,
I'm getting in on the Dark Imperium starter set and I want to have fun coming up with a new chapter. Can you help? Here are the ideas I have:
A black hole features prominently in their chapter background. Either they got too close to one, are investigating strange transmissions from one, are exploring odd signals and metaphysical events that have been reported around it, etc. not sure what the fascination is there, but they have it.
I want to use pre-heresy thousand sons iconography and equipment. The idea here being that since the imperium refound grav tech and how to make huge boys, I figured it's not to far of a stretch to say they're also dipping their huge toes back into magic. Or maybe Tzeentch is havin' a giggle, and maybe they're thousand sons in disguise?
Color wise, I'm thinking black as it paints up easy, with a little Sotek green for color. Metals would be something like stormhost silver.
Thoughts? How could I improve on this chapter of new huge boys?
I'd want to use the white transfers here on shoulders, knee caps, and the like.
I'd really like these helmets for them. The shoulder pads would also be good. Don't need the chests though, what with it not working on the Primaris Marines.
Bump. I'd love to have some fellow fa/tg/uys input on this. Or if you have any stories of your own regarding making your own chapter that I should know about so I can avoid the pitfalls that others have fallen in.
I've recently got
1x rite of the serpent
1x rotting mastodon
1x ruthless ripper
Should i have them replace any of these?

No seriously this isn't standard and would be destroyed in modern.
The answer is none of those cards generally. But looking at your deck I see questionable choices all the way down.

Sorry for the waste of trips lads.
That was the ob nixilis deck from the duel deck "nissa vs ob nixilis" but with renegade demon swapped for griselbrand.
Im trying to reduce its shittyness even if just a notch down.
Any tips for my trips?
