Why does every player love to specifically find the most wacky and crazy races possible and play them? What happened to the classic story about farmers, craftsmen, and disenfranchised petty nobles starting their adventures from a truly low place?
I'm putting together a party for 5e to run a converted Caverns of Thracia and my four friends chose Goliath, Tiefling, Dragonborn, and Yuan-ti Pureblood. Its just a big aesthetic peeve of mine, I hate this mishmash of crazy weirdos all smushed together for no reason. Hell these guys are scarier than the hordes of gnolls, lizardmen and minotaurs that theyre gonna face, it feels ridiculous.
Of course players (in my experience) LOVE to play the stupidest wackiest shit ever so if I dont want to have grumpy players I should let them have fun their way.
For any DM's that feel that feel the same as I do, how do I learn to just deal with this? Should I just give in and build the world with the assumption of wackiness and hyper racial diversity?
>STOP LIKING THINGS I DON'T LIKE
>>53701097
Newer players/immature players, in my experience, are the ones that like to play that kind of stuff. My older players that have been with me for a while mostly play the standard core races, and just make their characters interesting through background and action.
The 2 that are new though like to play wacky races and backstorys that make them stand out. From what I've seen they don't seem to know how to play a different person yet, so I guess they try to be different from themselves in other ways, but they end up just being themselves but more impulsive and weird looking.
Don't get me wrong, it's not exactly easy to be a different person, it takes time and practice. Hell, I sucked when I first started role playing.
But anyway, to answer your question, no. If they want to use their race to stand out and be wacky, let them, but don't let it change your world. ex. Tieflings are demon brood, who would welcome that shit knowingly into their town?
If you both play it right it can make their character more interesting.
>>53701097
I don't think it's really a trend so it must be your group.
To be honest I like when the races are more different from each others than elves, dwarves,ect... but only if that make sense in the setting and you are not the 0,000000000001% non-evil people of your monstrous race.
All right, so in just about any given roleplaying game adventure, player characters go out there and kill a whole lot of things. But have you ever seen the opposite? Have you witnessed, in an RPG, the miracle of new life being brought to the world?
I just participated in a semi-detailed roleplay session involving childbirth. Two of the PCs were parents. It went something like this:
>At breakfast table in the inn that morning
>DM: Suddenly, you feel yourself going to labor
>Mother: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
>Father: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
>Mother: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
>Father: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
>Repeat a couple times
>Cleric: Quit being a bitch and just push it out, it doesn't hurt that bad
>Mother still screaming
>Father hyperventilating
>Then it's over, there's a screeching infant there in front of them
>Gradually, they calm down
>Cleric prepares some tools so that she could tell the newborn's fortune
>Then suddenly...
>DM: You can feel another one coming out
>Silence
>We'd been talking about -a- child coming to the world for a while now, but no one ever brought up the possibility of a -plural-
>A bit more silence
>Then
>Mother: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
>Father: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
>Mother: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
>Father: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
>Mother: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
>Father: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
I'm sure you did better. Tell me about it.
>>53699747
>Tell me about it.
Character went into labor, we rolled some Heal checks with mounting DCs for every failed, and at the end of it all the PC gave birth totwins.
>>53699747
I'm in the midst of a time-travel campaign where one of the time periods regularly accessed is at a point where one of the future PC's is still in their mother's womb, decently along.
I'm considering the notion of what it'd be like to have the party witness one of their members' birth / potentially assisting in it or if that'd be too graphic ('fade to black' territory) and would be better left out, particularly since I tend to muddle the pace with too much side shit as it is.
>>53699747
Yeah they saw the birth of an Eldritch Abomination God, total party kill afterwards.
They shouldn't have let the BEGG complete his objectives, so they deserved it.
>Jones (anthropology, Univ. of Central Florida) contends that the dragon, a universal image of a creature that does not exist, is a direct result of the evolutionary process. Guided by the tenets of biocultural anthropology, Jones postulates that the dragon is a construct of the three predators that most threatened humankind in its infancy: the raptor, the snake, and the large cat. Allowing for the "cultural and individual artistic lenses" of world societies, Jones demonstrates the incredible similarities in the appearance and behavior of dragons in the lore and legend surrounding them.

Not anymore, at least.
It's possible that dragons actually existed.
I wouldn't dismiss the idea outright.

I'm starting up a game that is supernatural and in a modern, slightly more advanced era (cyborgs are a thing but it's not totally scifi). So that's the kinda stuff this thread is for. Modern fantasy is cool too, and super heroes are always welcome as long as they fit in the era.

Don't feed the troll edition
Warmasters Triumvirate is an attempt at creating yet another 40k AU. The Primarchs have changed, and instead of appointing a single Warmaster upon returning to Terra, the Emperor leaves the Great Crusade in the care of three of his sons. This eventually culminates in a civil war between Loyalists, Chaos Traitors and Separatists...

1900 – Second Boer War: British soldiers take Pretoria.
1916 – The Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Empire breaks out.

1944 – World War II: More than 1000 British bombers attack German gun batteries on the Normandy coast in preparation for D-Day.
1967 – The Six-Day War begins: Israel launches surprise strikes against Egyptian air-fields in response to the mobilisation of Egyptian forces on the Israeli border.
1989 – The Tank Man halts the progress of a column of advancing tanks for over half an hour after the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989.
Today marks the 50th anniversary of the start of the Six-Day War, also known as the June War, 1967 Arab–Israeli War, or Third Arab–Israeli War. It was fought between June 5 and 10, 1967 by Israel and the neighboring states of Egypt (known at the time as the United Arab Republic), Jordan, and Syria.
Relations between Israel and its neighbours had never fully normalised following the 1948 Arab–Israeli War. In the period leading up to June 1967, tensions became dangerously heightened. Israel reiterated its 1950s statement that the closure of the straits of Tiran to its shipping would be a casus belli and in late May Nasser announced the straits would be closed to Israeli vessels. Egypt then mobilised its forces along its border with Israel, and on 5 June Israel launched what it claimed were a series of preemptive airstrikes against Egyptian airfields. Claims and counterclaims relating to this series of events are one of a number of controversies relating to the conflict.
The Egyptians were caught by surprise, and nearly the entire Egyptian air force was destroyed with few Israeli losses, giving the Israelis air superiority. Simultaneously, the Israelis launched a ground offensive into the Gaza Strip and the Sinai, which again caught the Egyptians by surprise. After some initial resistance, Egyptian leader Gamal Abdel Nasser ordered the evacuation of the Sinai. Israeli forces rushed westward in pursuit of the Egyptians, inflicted heavy losses, and conquered the Sinai.
Nasser induced Syria and Jordan to begin attacks on Israel by using the initially confused situation to claim that Egypt had defeated the Israeli air strike. Israeli counterattacks resulted in the seizure of East Jerusalem as well as the West Bank from the Jordanians, while Israel's retaliation against Syria resulted in its occupation of the Golan Heights.
