Alright lads, listen up!

I wanted to congratulate you all on a job well done with our last mission, involving the destruction of that Space Hulk, over Doreplis III, the other day! Even Command was left utterly speechless when they'd heard we had successed; not too mention with so few casualties! It's almost as if they hadn't expected us to survive it...

As such, I made a request to have the regiment resupplied at our new location with various luxary items. Chocolate, toilet paper, and even socks! But most importantly, I ordered in for a large shipment of Recaff for everyone!

Unfortunately... It seems that the Munitorum shipped us the wrong supplies... As such, instead of the one-hundred thousand packages of Tyrilia brand Recaff we were supposed to receive. We instead seemed to have been given shipped exactly one-hundred thousand lasgun grade power cells...

As such, before we head off into combat, I am calling for a surprise Field Kit Inspection, to determine just how much Recaff we have left! So present arms, and equipment, for a Field Kit Inspection!

Tell them that the best resolution is a peaceful one, they've co-existed before and they can co-exist after then offer to work towards it.

If they're that invested then they shouldn't want people of their faction to die in a stalemate

"What is my biggest regret as a spell developer?" Whoo. That's a big one. You got plenty more ink, parchment? Good, this might take a while.

So, back when I was a young man, in my 170s, I was still working as a spellwright for High Magus Gaetsumus, Master of Divination, Holder of the Keys, Seer of the Infinite Windows, and all around kind of a tightass. Still, it was my first job, and I had already done a couple of minor spells for him; cantrips, couple of potions, a "Spell of Keyfinding"... honestly, don't know why they trusted him to hold those keys, he was constantly losing them... and one day he walks into my scriptorium with a new assignment.

"Got a client in the Army of New Highelf", he said, "who's been having a lot of trouble with deserters, layabouts, all sort of misfits joining up and then generally being a drag on resources. He wants a way to separate the vines from the saplings, look at new recruits and figure out which ones are really eager to join and which ones just want a hot meal and a down bed on the government's dole."
"So," I said, "like a 'Detect Jerk' spell?" He laughed... I remember that laugh specifically, it was always this raspy, kind of hoarse laugh, always creeped me out... and said "Yeah, that's about it. Think you're up to it?"

By the way, important lesson to any young wizards out there; if your Senior Spellcaster ever asks you this question, and your immediate thought is "Yes", please stop for a moment and consider what an idiot you are. And then answer "Yes" anyway.

Well, I thought about it. On the surface of it, it seemed pretty complex, but as I thought about it there were lots of ways to cut corners; basically it would be a divination spell, like Reading Surface Thoughts, but you'd need to go deeper than that, kind of get a pull of their recent mental activity. Retrieving the subject's memories would be pretty high level arcana, nothing I was experienced with, but I was a young man and eager to work my way up the Magic Ladder. Technically, the client just wanted a simple yes or no on the target being a jerk... so, instead of having to muck about with retrieving, collating, and translating the subject's memories, I could just run that in the background, put it through some preset parsers, and then just return a "Yes Jerk" or "Not Jerk" condition. Arcana runs pretty efficiently when you don't have to translate the results into forms that the mortal mind is capable of withstanding, so I thought I had a pretty good grip on this one.

"Sure thing," I said. "Give me two months." I figured it'd probably only take a fortnight, but I had already learned the vital magics of Padding your time.
>>
>>53852723
Of course, no arcane project goes without tampering. After two weeks, the first of which I had spent making sure no one else had done this before, and the second which I dedicated to developing my "Hazards and Hydras" campaign, the Magus was at my door again. Just like every project since the dawn of history, it looks like my little spell had been the victim of scope creep; Now not only did the customer want to weed out jerks, but they wanted to know which of the incoming recruits would be good choices for leadership positions, ones that would stick to the book, obey orders, that sort of thing. "Shouldn't be a problem," I said, not really thinking about it, "But I'd probably need another two months." He said that sounded reasonable. Mentally, I was dancing; I figured most of the groundwork with the spell would be done with the first bit, and plugging in some different parsers would be the work of a couple days at the most, so I had just earned myself plenty of time to really get the details straight on the Labyrinth of Perpetual Motion.
Next day, he knocked on my door and told me that the Upper Council had heard about the project, and wanted a demonstration next week. He left before I could say anything.
>>
>>53852793
That week was probably the most I worked in my entire life. Of course, the basic fundamental structure was nowhere near as easy as I had anticipated; I figured I could just copy a bunch of bits of some existing spells, but of course they didn't play well together, and absolutely nobody back then provided any commentary on how the various bits were supposed to work anyway. So, I did what any young wizard who wanted to keep their job would do; I fudged, and fudged hard. Hard embedded some arcane variables, covered up slow processes with flashy effects, came up with sophisticated sounding terminology... 'Jerk' didn't seem to be appropriate for the Upper Council, so I picked some terms that sounded much more serious... all to make it look like I hadn't spent the last 3 weeks mostly calculating dice percentages... one of my coworkers caught me doing that once, but fortunately I think I was able to convince them that I was just a gambling addict... and I prayed to whatever god would listen that the whole thing wouldn't blow up in my face, perhaps literally, when next Moonday rolled around. I spent nearly as much time dreaming up excuses for why certain parts of it weren't working as I did designing the damn thing, preparing myself for every criticism, every nitpicking flaw. I was prepared for every eventuality.

Except for what actually happened, of course.

I'm writing up a setting that's placed roughly 2000 years in the future and I want to to my homework regarding names and naming conventions of places. Does anybody have good sources on linguistic drift, how languages change over time and similar topics? The easier managable it is for somebody with no background in linguistics, the better, but I'm not opposed to putting the work in. If they are good, DOIs of paper about the topic are okay too, since I have access to the stuff through my university's network.

Technology matters a lot. Languages change much more slowly when written or recorded examples are widely available. Obviously class plays a big role too. Uneducated people have less exposure to written/recorded examples of their own language. Look at how much vulgar Latin changed compared to the academic version.

Less conquest and more mutually beneficial allegiance. The romulans show up just after WW3 and give humanity a krogan uplift...

...and weaponized them against the vulcans.

By TNG era, humans had gotten a lot more societal power, if only because we bred faster than once every seven years so we were beginning to outnumber the native romulans and pull off a Merkel's Mistake conquest on them.

Post here about rad fantasy food and food related elements you've furnished around your setting

Tree Bread: This ridiculously expensive delicacy grows naturally only in a swamp and can take a few hundred years to cultivate properly, basically when a certain species of mold begins to reclaim a dead tree it breaks the wood itself down into a smokey, slightly sweet yet firm cake. A deep savory flavor unlike anything else.

Nobles can't get enough of this shit and making tree bread from mahogany and other valuable woods in private reserves is while not a common practice considered a sound investment, a single log of those eldarwood cakes can rival magical items in value.

I'm here to show you an example of how I used to find others for my campaign. Granted this was a few years ago, back when I didn't have the network or social capital I do now.

Tldr: go to the local thing, run a 1 person short. You will be very pleasantly surprised at how often it works. You'll hear no a lot, but you'll also hear yes more and more often. Plus it's great practice for flexibility.

The story

This is how it begins. (Read this in the voice of James Earl Jones. It's pretty much my actual voice lucky me, though I'm no Vader!)

I motioned him over, within the shadow of the figurines, on the far table no one uses since the light flickers ominously...

"wanna play some... Dnd?..."

I ask, discreetly opening my trench coat to reveal a handful of dice and a folded up character sheet, the light flickers appropriately and I allow myself a devilish grin.

"nuh... No bro... Why are you wearing a trenchcoat? It's like 73 degrees in he-"

I shush him slithering from my throne to his side, (it was really heavy to carry and I'm still surprised Brett let me do that).

"Shhhh hero, have a seat. Complementary soda is under the table... I'm thinking, a paladin?"

He allows himself begrudgingly to be sat down, the Jade drink of the gaming gods (mountain dew) frosting his hands... Quietly I notice his mjolnir tattoo, I log his buzz cut, military perhaps? Regimented? Storm cleric? No... No, I was right, definitely paladin.

"Well, I'm really here for the Warhammer... But my army is a few points off so I've got an hour."

I ignore his uninitiated prattle, and produce from within my satchel of lesser holding, a voluminous tome of quite unforgotten renown.

"Welcome... To the isles."

His eyes widen as I grab a figurine from the counter behind him,

"I'm pretty sure you can't do that-"

I shout at Brett "add it to my tab", apologize for breaking the immersion as I wrench it open with my teeth and begin to walk him through a roll up.

Three mountain dews later, one barscene, a lover made then lost, then rescued, and a few awkward trenchcoat partings later, he's begging to continue...

" I didn't realize this would be so much fun! Do you run a campaign or-"

"Shhhh..."Yet again I hush him. A novitiate, bled by war, by strife, by cr2 creatures felled... It was time...

I reach within my trench to pull out, the signup sheet.

" Yeah bro it'll be like every weekend at this address, bring your own snacks, manual supplied. You should totally buy this figurine it really fits your character."

Another has fallen to the collective. As he leaves clutching his Avatar I move to the soda machine to restock, eyeing the upset redhead that has just lost the magic tournament, whom I overheard has to wait 2 hours for her ride home....

I ready my trench coat... Then decide that's probably not the best opener this time, plus it's like 74 goddamned degrees in here what the heck.
this is actually a true story from several years ago. Happy to share about the redhead. Ended up dating a while. I have a ton of stories like this.

tl;dr after graduating in college back in 2011, I have been out of the loop of changes/updates in 40k ever since 2011.

Now that I have a more relaxed & stable life, I'm planning to get back into the hobby again. Problem is: I don't know where to begin with all this new shit happening.

So I ask you guys: what's new? AFAIK there's new Spess Mareen models, Roboute Waking up, and the Imperial Guard is not the Imperial guard anymore, and Necrons can talk.

Besides this, what else?

New rules, new edition, GW actually communicating with the customer base and attempting to balance rules. If you've been out of it since 2011, we've gone through a phase of having 1850 points in one single unit, requiring 6's to be Hit, with a 2++ re-rollable invulnerable save and a 4+ Feel no Pain and Hit and Run, but now that's over. So people are generally very optimistic about this new edition.

I think I may have fucked up, /tg/.

I've been running a game for a few sessions now, and I'm realizing that it's not the kind of game I was initially looking to run. The frustrating thing is, I know it's not really the fault of my players, but more of a difference in expectations and what was left unsaid.

The PCs are sort of a 'special unit' for their kingdom, battling an enemy empire; they pull off impossible missions, they're badass champions and highly-skilled professionals who join in at critical points to ensure the fight goes well. (i.e. they're the fifth column that hits the enemy right where it hurts, at the worst possible time.)

See, the idea is that the players are technically fighting for the wrong side. Both sides are arguably bad, but their side is worse. They were the aggressors, and the monarch is under the influence of a devil that's looking to escalate the war as much as possible. To my mind, the PCs should eventually figure out that something is up, and look for a third way to bring an end to the conflict.

The thing is, the PCs just enjoy what they're doing too much. The party leader is probably the worse offender. What happened is that, at one point, they captured a group of guerillas looking to sabotage their weapon supplies (including cannons) and prepared to herd them off to imprisonment. They actually killed most of the fighters, so the reminder were obviously pissed, but an important NPC (the future resistance contact) was amid the group of fighters.

The problem is, the PCs didn't even speak to them. They just prepared to send them off to the labour camps. In an effort to put more plot into the story, I had the guerilla leader go on an exposition rant about the atrocities their side had committed, and how they were fighting for the devil himself.

So the PC leader said "Wait, I've changed my mind. We're not sending them off to the labour camps." But instead of asking exactly what the fuck she was talking about, he said "Hang them."

Anyway, I called the session for the evening. I didn't want to break kayfabee, but I told the leader's player that "Hey, maybe you should look into things. That person might've had a point."

The PC told me "Oh, I know something's probably up, but I don't really care. I'm not interested in helping them in any way, I just want to win the war." This is a problem, because the other PCs just sort of go along with whatever the leader (who is, to his credit, the one most invested and interested in the setting) wants them to do.

Like, is there anything I should do to sort of get things back on track? I mean, at this rate they'll eventually win the war, but I'm not sure a gradual slaughter is the kind of campaign I can run in the long-term.

This isn't the first time it'd happened. The party has generally dealt very harshly with anyone who doesn't seem on the up-and-up. It's like they don't even want to see the possibility that there's a bigger picture.
>>
>>53849633
Running a different game then your players are think they're playing is a bit of problem

This is sort of a 'should of' thing but did you make it clear that there was more to your setting than just mindless hacking and slashing?

If you want to try again, do something more obvious, like as obvious as it can be without being immersion breaking (at least not to the point of 4th wall breakage)

lastly if it's really gone to shit you could directly tell the party leader about whats going on (OOC of course)
