If they don't want to do actual board games, do stuff like hearts, spades, and things like that.
Those are good games that are well within the comfort zone of most old people.
From there you can try to introduce some other trick taking games like Diamonds and such, and try to grow from there.
But if they don't want to play board games (even if they don't know what board games are now) don't try to force them into it.

Handsome Jack is a weird situation because he has the whole "I'm a hero" thing going on, but his actual actions and enjoyment of the evil things he does causes it to be a weird dual thing going on with him. He's not a villain who regrets the bad things he does but sees a greater good he's reaching towards, he's a psychopath who does horrible things to people for the fun of it, while still believing he's good because bandits are bad.

Imagine if every poster on /tg/, from the old ones that've been around since its infancy to that one /a/ crossposter who just strayed here today, gained mod privileges. Imagine if we had the power to delete all threads and ban all other posters we don't like. No proxy or phoneposting will save them.
Generals? Gone. "Stat me"? Purged. Troll threads that've resurfaced since the dawn of time? Wiped out in a burst of blinding nuclear fire. /pol/ will go extinct, Wayne will get what he deserves, Quests and elf slaves and Thulsa Doom are brought back just for the purpose of getting rid of them all over again.
Anything that literally any one of us hates? Gone.
This state would last until everyone's had their say - a day or two perhaps. After the smoke clears, what would be left?
What do you think /tg/ has that none of us would disagree with? What could the remaining few, those that managed to not anger anyone, now talk about? Is there anything at all?

We dunno. We only had one case up to now. For Eurasia, there was maybe a 300-400 year period between the first gun and the matchlock.

gunpowder appears around 1300. large arrows wedged in a vase-like cannon of bronze last till about 1330-40, then are replaced by large balls of stone.
hand-held guns appear about 1400 with the gonne. doesnt become commonplace till about 1420 when the hussites used them extensively. Gonnes slowly evolve over the next 60-80 years, from a staff with a small cannon barrel on the end, to a more ergonomic stock, and then to a longer barrel, making the arquebus.
at the same time a burning match evolves from handheld, to held on a lever, to held on a spring lock, which will be in place by about 1480-90.
so, roughly 200 years pass between first use of gunpowder, and adoption of the matchlock, with about 100 years between adoption of gunpowder, the invention of handheld guns and match-locks.

An old friend wants to dust off the 3.5 books (I know, I know) for a campaign, Lv.3 start, and I ended up making a mounted combat character since I never did try that playstyle out back in the day.
I ran into a problem, though: War Horse can only carry 300lbs to stay at light load, and I don't want to be encumbered by a medium+ load.
At BARE MINIMUM, we're looking at:
Barding - 50lbs
Military Saddle - 30lbs
Bit & Bridle - 1lb
My rider's plate armor - 50lbs
My rider's lance - 10lbs
No saddlebags (8lbs), even. And none of this shit can be shoved into a party bag of holding while staying useful. That only leaves 159lbs left for the rider himself.
Now, he's a very strong human (STR 18, CON 14), so at 6'2" he should be around 220-250lbs depending on how lean he is. Definitely no less than 210.
If I want to get him under 159lbs I'd have to make him a total manlet, like we're talking 5'6". Should I try to make do with lighter armor until I can buy my horse some +Str equipment, or should I resign myself to having to play a midget?

I don't know shit about actual weight of medieval stuff, what would more realistic weights for the items in question be? The barding is chain shirt, by the way.
Anyway, I can't be a dwarf or elf because mounted combat aint cheap on feats and I need that bonus feat. Besides, non-human races only exist to remind everyone how great humans are. Dwarves are cool too, but a properly built dwarf would still be over the weight limit I think (and the FEATS).
