What's changed in 2nd edition? I ran a few seasons as DM/MC (Or whatever it was called,) with first edition Monsterhearts and it was entertaining, with me and my group trying to run it as something in the vein of Buffy, Teen Wolf, and a little bit of X-Files, since a lot of my friends like those kinds of shows and even though some of them hadn't played a tabletop game before, we all had some good fun.

The only thing I found difficult about it was the fact that characters with high Hot and/or Cold seemed a lot stronger than every other character. The first season the Queen and the Vampire seemed to dominate everyone, being able to shut people down with Cold and role for manipulates with Hot, and succeed often. On top of that their Cold roles made them difficult to startle/stop, even for me at times. To make shit worse, whenever I'd have them roll to become scared, they could roll with Cold and basically marked experience from being "scared" by holding steady all the time, while other characters would be forced to flee or do something stupid for failing the same roll.

The second season I was more careful about this, but a player picked up the Serpentine skin and was largely able to pull off the same things, shutting down other characters at will, turning on others, manipulating NPCs, etc.

As for other mechanics, "Gaze Into the Abyss" was so open-ended that it was either useless or overpowered. It seemed more like a plot contrivance that should belong to one character, not a universal trait.

Mainly nostalgia probably, but I'm also a sucker for percentile systems.

GURPS, because ARMOUR PIERCING FIN STABILIZED DISCARDING SABOT DEPLETED URANIUM ROUNDS fired from a 12ga shotgun is fucking awesome, and it actually means something in GURPS because of muh sufficiently realistic mechanics. Also it does my favourite setting, modern/near future fantasy really well with its Ritual Path Magic module.

As they power their way through the checklist of shiny things to pick up and big nasty brutes to fuck over they start to notice assassination attempts starting to pile up. Upon enquiry, the assassins will reveal they are working for the local government.

Turns out the party is itself being fucked over. Turned out there is no Association, and never has been. It's actually a conspiracy covering up a massive cult that call themselves The Sculpters - who have the ultimate aim of creating their very own mindless physical deity from monster bits and using it as a tool to ascend to godhood themselves.

Still working on artifacts, but creatures to be hunted currently include:

>An ancient blue dragon, so as to create possible defences against its fire (to give it wings and lightning);
>An empyrean, to develop possible defences against divine magic (one found in the Lower Planes can be used for evil, and serves as a good base for a living god);
>A group of ghouls complete with ghast, to research their paralysing touch (gives it paralysis);
>A kraken, for obvious reasons (gives it 30-foot-reach grappling tentacles);
>A colony of kuo-toa, again to study the effects of prolonged exposure to psionics (their ability to inadvertently create gods will kickstart its transcendence);
>A mummy lord, to discover new methods of turning undead and combatting the living dead (this will give it innate spellcasting ability);
>Black pudding, to research their nature and discover chemical-based repellents (it will bleed sentient acid);
>An efreet, to research the nature of the denizens of the Planes (fire magic, and more spellcasting);
>Pixies, captured alive, to research anti-fey techniques (their sacrifice is necessary for the ritual);
>A troll, to harness its regenerative properties for medicinal purposes (speaks for itself.)

Any suggestions for creatures or artifacts?

I've never encountered this stipulation outside of comics, and like so much with comics, it's basically whatever the author happens to want it to be at any given moment - sometimes Odin can override the hammer's enchantment and let anyone use it, sometimes he can't and the hammer has its own will; sometimes being a true warrior in the Nordic sense is worthiness, sometimes worthiness is a more contemporary notion of heroic nature.

In the case of your specific question? Sure. If the author/GM wanted it to be that way. If they didn't, then no.

A gigantic construct with ridiculous weapons and spell conteiners with even more ridiculous spells stored into said containers, as well as eternal wands and the like to create an Uber-Beholder kind of creature. Also make it immune to everything because it's somehow possible with the right spell combo. If it also gets to use equipent, things get even sillier way faster.

Fighter can also fly at level 5, it's called "asking your not-retarded party wizard to cast fly on you". Martials and casters are supposed to supplement each others, not compete.
