I'm trying to set up a viking fantasy game. By which I don't really mean a D&D game where tons of dudes have beards and axes, but more of a sort of "gritty" (god I hate that term) type of low fantasy setting where the norse (and also later post-Christianization Scandinavian) beliefs are true, but sort of distant.

In other words, that weird finn in the woods? Totally a wizard. Those woods nobody walks too deep into? Yeah, there are trolls there. So there's magic and monsters, but they're a bit distant and most people haven't actually seen any of it with their own eyes.

I guess you could call it the Game of Thrones approach to fantasy, where a majority will be about relatively mundane shit, but there's totally fantasy elements out there if you go looking for them. Also, way more trading, exploring and family blood feuds than raiding and pillaging. Probably also some kind of Glory score to see if you get to Valhalla.

So it would be helpful for you to throw viking shit at me. Cool legends, awesome weapons, battles, tactics, culture, whatever. I know some, being from that neck of the woods, but something tells me you good lads know a great deal more than what I was old in school.

Thor tricked a dude into marrying him.

Actually, he tricked a dude into wanting to marry him and then beat him to death with a hammer as soon as he got it back.

A sort of medieval scam for wedding gifts.

But I mean, the dude kind of had it coming. The dude has a giant red beard. You probably should've seen the whole thing coming.

Shall we have a monsterhearts thread?
2nd editions just came out has anyone had the chance to play it yet?
Also what are people's favourite playbooks? I'm a fan of the Fae myself, I like the social dynamic their promise-related moves encourage, it's friendly and yet at the same time kind of dysfunctional, wihch is a pretty good kind of relationship for a game about teenage drama to have.

What's changed in 2nd edition? I ran a few seasons as DM/MC (Or whatever it was called,) with first edition Monsterhearts and it was entertaining, with me and my group trying to run it as something in the vein of Buffy, Teen Wolf, and a little bit of X-Files, since a lot of my friends like those kinds of shows and even though some of them hadn't played a tabletop game before, we all had some good fun.

The only thing I found difficult about it was the fact that characters with high Hot and/or Cold seemed a lot stronger than every other character. The first season the Queen and the Vampire seemed to dominate everyone, being able to shut people down with Cold and role for manipulates with Hot, and succeed often. On top of that their Cold roles made them difficult to startle/stop, even for me at times. To make shit worse, whenever I'd have them roll to become scared, they could roll with Cold and basically marked experience from being "scared" by holding steady all the time, while other characters would be forced to flee or do something stupid for failing the same roll.

The second season I was more careful about this, but a player picked up the Serpentine skin and was largely able to pull off the same things, shutting down other characters at will, turning on others, manipulating NPCs, etc.

As for other mechanics, "Gaze Into the Abyss" was so open-ended that it was either useless or overpowered. It seemed more like a plot contrivance that should belong to one character, not a universal trait.

Traveller, because Traveller character gen is the best.

Unknown Armies, because of those sanity mechanics.

Delta Green, because of its setting

GURPS, because ARMOUR PIERCING FIN STABILIZED DISCARDING SABOT DEPLETED URANIUM ROUNDS fired from a 12ga shotgun is fucking awesome, and it actually means something in GURPS because of muh sufficiently realistic mechanics. Also it does my favourite setting, modern/near future fantasy really well with its Ritual Path Magic module.

So I came up with an idea for a D&D5E campaign. Not an adventure. A humongous, 20-level-long campaign that could set a gaming group for years. Still working on details, but the framework is here.

So the party is in jail for whatever reason, and they're approached by some bloke who calls himself Sigismund Rolander who wants to talk to them privately. According to him, he has been elected as a representative of the Modern Magician's Association for Research into Fantastical Phenomena - a society aimed at researching various types of monster and magic to create innovative ways to counter or harness them.

What does this have to do with the party? Well, the Association are comprised primarily of alchemists, surgeons, scholars and inventors – meaning they cannot collect samples of monsters on their own. He intends to hire the party primarily to collect powerful artifacts, slay certain types of monster and transport their bodies to their HQ – and the Association are willing to both buy them all out of prison and pay them for their work.

The reason they can't go out and hire, say, an army is because that many men and horses plus all the supplies needed to sustain them would be ludicrously expensive, and the Membership only receives so much money from government grants and donations every year. Hiring a group of adventurers is infinitely cheaper, more covert and reliable and "besides, this is sort of your thing, isn't it?"

Little do the party know...

As they power their way through the checklist of shiny things to pick up and big nasty brutes to fuck over they start to notice assassination attempts starting to pile up. Upon enquiry, the assassins will reveal they are working for the local government.

Turns out the party is itself being fucked over. Turned out there is no Association, and never has been. It's actually a conspiracy covering up a massive cult that call themselves The Sculpters - who have the ultimate aim of creating their very own mindless physical deity from monster bits and using it as a tool to ascend to godhood themselves.

Discuss.

Still working on artifacts, but creatures to be hunted currently include:
>An illithid elder brain, apparently to research the exact nature of psionics, mind flayers and their society (actually to give it psionics);
>A gorgon, to develop alternative anti-petrification techniques and to carefully observe its metal body (living armour and petrification breath);
>An ancient blue dragon, so as to create possible defences against its fire (to give it wings and lightning);
>An empyrean, to develop possible defences against divine magic (one found in the Lower Planes can be used for evil, and serves as a good base for a living god);
>A group of ghouls complete with ghast, to research their paralysing touch (gives it paralysis);
>A kraken, for obvious reasons (gives it 30-foot-reach grappling tentacles);
>A colony of kuo-toa, again to study the effects of prolonged exposure to psionics (their ability to inadvertently create gods will kickstart its transcendence);
>A mummy lord, to discover new methods of turning undead and combatting the living dead (this will give it innate spellcasting ability);
>Black pudding, to research their nature and discover chemical-based repellents (it will bleed sentient acid);
>An efreet, to research the nature of the denizens of the Planes (fire magic, and more spellcasting);
>Pixies, captured alive, to research anti-fey techniques (their sacrifice is necessary for the ritual);
>A troll, to harness its regenerative properties for medicinal purposes (speaks for itself.)

Any suggestions for creatures or artifacts?

Not trying to meme shit and get all r.eddit, honest question as I do not read Cap or Thor (Odinson either) enough to have any clue about this. Does Mjolnir have a set of morals that must be met for one to be considered worthy or is it all about self worth? If one is confident in their own self-worth and ability is that what matters? Not the morality involved with what is subjectively right or wrong? For example could a rapist, a confident rapist who believes in his cause and own ability, willing to die to rape someone, be worthy? Just curious.

Depends on the setting/system.

For a Marvel-centric answer to your question, try asking again over at /co/.
>>
>>53922105
I've never encountered this stipulation outside of comics, and like so much with comics, it's basically whatever the author happens to want it to be at any given moment - sometimes Odin can override the hammer's enchantment and let anyone use it, sometimes he can't and the hammer has its own will; sometimes being a true warrior in the Nordic sense is worthiness, sometimes worthiness is a more contemporary notion of heroic nature.

In the case of your specific question? Sure. If the author/GM wanted it to be that way. If they didn't, then no.

A gigantic construct with ridiculous weapons and spell conteiners with even more ridiculous spells stored into said containers, as well as eternal wands and the like to create an Uber-Beholder kind of creature. Also make it immune to everything because it's somehow possible with the right spell combo. If it also gets to use equipent, things get even sillier way faster.

You should've specified what you categorize as weapons.

So alot of people have been debating about how much better casters are in comparison to martials and I think I finally figured out an easy way to describe the gap between.

At level 5, the average martial deals slightly more damage than he did at level 4,

At level 5, the average mage learns how to fucking FLY!

Like let's take this in for a moment, usually characters who can fly are also fairly powerful beings in their own right or flight is one of the last things they learn before the end of the series.

And yet, casters get this ability, which fundamentally changes everything about the way that characters approach certain obstacles and which areas of the world they have access to as a 3rd level spell, usually 1/4 of the way through their progression.

Since there are spells that can deflect any ranged attack they can do, magic items aren't always a guarantee (unless you're a mage), how is the martial supposed to compete?

We've had this conversation a thousand times before, and we've repeatedly established why it happens and how to fix it.
>>
>>53908462
The real reason is that other classes have to roll dice to attempt actions which may or may not succeed, whereas casters don't have to roll dice to attempt spells and the spell attempts always succeed.
>>
>>53908462
Fighter can also fly at level 5, it's called "asking your not-retarded party wizard to cast fly on you". Martials and casters are supposed to supplement each others, not compete.
