>Party runs across some rabbits
>Druid can communicate with them
>Asks where a certain McGuffin, to do with their current quest, happens to be
>Rabbits ask for some carrots.
>Party turns out of the forest, treks back to the closest town, buys a bag of carrots, and returns to the rabbits with them.
>Rabbits don't know where it is, and try to get into the party's packs to see if they have more food.

They literally just went up to random rabbits and assumed that just because their guy could speak with animals, any random animal had to know something useful for their current quest.
>>
>>53949584
My players did exactly the same thing. I had the rabbits bring them to an enclave of treats who pointed them in the right direction in exchange for returning a sacred animal to them.

I like to reward player ingenuity myself and keep the story going , rather than arbitrarily punishing players for not following my railroad.

Is it easier to build a castle from scratch, or to take an existing one over?
27 posts and 5 images submitted.
>>
Considering the fact that castles are supposed to be located at strategically strong points, it makes sense that there would be some other fortification on the best spot that you would have to take over.
>>
I don't care about ease. One is obviously more fun.
>>
>>53947123
Take an existing one over.

It's there for a reason and even if it's in ruins to the "push it over and start again" point the foundations should be usable.

>Horror movie style campaign.
>The BBEG (UGH) is someone who tends to hunt down the weakest in a group and turn that guy into a horror movie monster by injecting them with something. Basically the guy that dies first also becomes the monster because he was just shanked with a needle filled with Freddy Kreuger hormones.
>He keeps doing this to the point where monsters are starting to become dangerously common.
What are some ways he can profit from this without the generic "he owns a business that sells weapons/hunts monsters" shtick and what can be some good explanations for why he always goes for the weakest guy?

Do you like initiative as a random roll? Are there any systems that base it off a stat without the roll of a die?

much faster, but it makes combat a lot more predictable

Yes, I prefer it as a random roll, in order to prevent combat from becoming predictable as >>53946062

I like the random initiative. Makes combat less solvable/predictable.

Fixed initiative is a common alternate rule in just about any game.

Any good stories? Horror stories? I don't see much talk about it here, so I'm curious how much of the boardbase does it.

Help an Anon, /tg/ I found a table that seems to have consistent players right down the road, and I want to give it a shot.

It sounds weird, but I think doing a game that's kinda restricting could be a nice change of pace.

I personally would be interested in hearing how people made the most of the core books +1 rule. What kinda cool character's they managed to make within the bounds of the guidelines, and how the typical module is.

I played an AL mod once when I was with a DM too lazy to make his own or buy one, and he got it for free. It was just kinda dry, mostly window dressing on the social stuff, and the dungeon acted like there were puzzles, but all it really did was trigger encounters as they only way to progress. I'm hoping that was just a dry spell, as I know the big modules can be pretty great.
>>
>>53945854
Current character plans are to just go Fighter. Kinda feel things out with a simple as dirt build and see what other's are doing.

Using SCAG as my +1, so I can get at Booming Blade (I want to go Eldritch Knight down the road to bring a little magic into the character), and I think the backgrounds are neat.

Current array is 15,15,13,11,9,8 with Human as a racial, non variant.

The character himself is going to be an old Don Quixote figure crossed with Dr. Seuss and Norton. A failed children books writer who went mad from not making anything of his life, and has reinvented himself as one of the daring hero's from his books. Knight of the Order background.
>>
I suppose for anyone also curious, here's the link to the main AL site and the wizards page with a lot of the starting documents.

http://dndadventurersleague.org/
http://dnd.wizards.com/articles/events/adventurers-league-resources

The whole thing seemed like too much busywork at first, including organized play for prior editions and pathfinder that I'd always ignore in favor of just gaming with the bros.

Though, tracking a character in a standardized setting along with everyone else, getting "sanctioned" items and stuff, kinda has a competitive/sporting sound to it I want to at least give a shot.

now that we had yet another thread of "why are guns unpopular in fantasy", how about we talk what the best way is to implement guns in fantasy-themed systems without turning them into super-weapons.
17 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>53945738
Balance melee weapons and bows against them.

For example, a bullet flies a long way and does some damage. However, if you can get up close, a sword does a shitton of damage. Being shot is not the same as a guy with a sword six feet long slicing you in two.
Or an arrow hitting you without warning, followed by five more.
>>
>>53945738
If we're talking about low-tech guns, they'd be powerful, sure, but also slow and unreliable. All sorts of malfunctions keep happening and each shot takes even longer to get through than with a crossbow.

You'll be lucky to get two shots out in a fight.
>>
>>53945738
in real life, their powerful damage was offset by their poor accuracy and rate of fire, making them a one-time use weapon when not in the security of a formation
and several soft factors, like keeping your powder dry, mixing your powder so it doesnt settle, the possibility of exploding, and the mechanical components of your arquebus needing a lot more maintenance

If I want to create a setting that's basically a dystopic bureaucracy (like The Trial, Brazil, 1984, Kallocain etc), where should I begin?
11 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
All bureaucracies are dystopic

I would recommend starting with a flowchart of responsibilities and then just fucking it up, like adding dead ends and loops and such

Like
"the associate secretary of amputations cannot authorize the operation without all the appropriate forms including 114-N, which you can obtain at the office of the minister for secular dismemberment. Unfortunately that office is currently unable to process any form requests due to oversight from the department of religious affairs, which will never authorize a form release unless it is deemed medically necessary by both the attending physician and a representative from the office of the associate secretary of amputations, both of whom must submit form 114-N in triplicate"
