What's a good loadout for a Leviathan dread?

I'm a little adverse to using the new Redemptor, regardless of how good it's rules might be (though with everything SM I imagine it'll be mediocre)

I prefer to use the old tanks and dreads alongside Primaris for the models and think the Lev will make a nice, but not OTT centrepiece

In a lot of games, having a high strength gives you a flat number to add to damage, and heavy weapons like two-handed swords roll bigger damage dice than lighter ones. The end result of this is that the lower your strength, the more you are incentivized to use a heavy weapon, because the larger damage die will mean a bigger percentage increase for you.

Reductio ad absurdum: If your strength damage bonus is 1, going from a regular sword that does d6 damage to a two-handed sword that does 2d6 damage gives you a 78% increase in damage output. If your damage bonus is 1000, going from a d6 sword to a 2d6 two-handed sword gives you an increase in damage output of around 1/3 of a percent.

So you end up with a situation where people with high strengths are incentivized to avoid big, two-handed weapons and prefer to go with something like a sword-and-shield combo, while weaklings are incentivized to walk around toting zweihanders and shit.

This problem exists because many systems don't take into account that people with low strength can't wield heavy weapons. Weapons should have a minimum strength requirement attached to them. In some games (DnD, Pathfinder) however, you get half again your strength for wielding a weapon with two hands, so in that case it benefits strong characters more to wield weapons in two hands, rather than one.

>This problem exists because many systems don't take into account that people with low strength can't wield heavy weapons. Weapons should have a minimum strength requirement attached to them.
But the problem still exists, it just has a higher ground floor. The weakest people capable of wielding heavy weapons are the most incentivized to use them.

>In some games (DnD, Pathfinder) however, you get half again your strength for wielding a weapon with two hands, so in that case it benefits strong characters more to wield weapons in two hands, rather than one.
This does address the problem, though in my opinion, it's a less than elegant solution for a couple of reasons. First, it's kind of obnoxious to add one-and-a-half times your strength bonus (but then I like shit as simple and streamlined as possible, so others may not understand my point of view). Second, it stacks inflated damage on top of already-larger weapon damage, so things can get a bit out of hand damage-wise. One thing I don't like about it is that it takes away the possibility of a graze--or anything approaching that. If your strength bonus is 4, for instance, the very least damage you can do with a two-handed weapon is 7, which is pretty close to the maximum damage a normal dude does with a normal sword.

In the end, it feels like a patch on a flawed system. With that said, I'm not sure what the ideal solution is. It still bugs me though.
>>
>>54115810
The problem exists because those "heavy Weapons" like the 2 handed sword weren't that heavy, and are easier for someone with a lower strength to use for prolonged times.

Because Champion was just so the SRD has something to print, and because it's for guys who like Action Surge but really wanted to be a Barbarian.

Eldritch Knight is too circumstantial and Cantrips can't replace Melee for fighter.

Purple Dragon Knight is just the worse half of the Warlord we're never gonna get, and Battle Master is the better half.

Beyond that... You've gotta go UA or Homebrew to get any better.

That picture? Not remotely. That's pretty much the difference between the laughably pathetic Weaboo we all make fun of compared to a serious student of Japanese culture. It takes work and interaction to get into the latter half even in societies where Christians are very much a minority.

And there are no cultures, Christian or not, which don't have attitudes towards the subjects below, and those attitudes are never trivially simple.

As far as actually incorporating into the campaign, though? Fundamentally it's going to mostly be an internal model of what 'feels right' for that group of people as worked out by the DM. I'm not sure how you'd be able to create a deep culture for a separate people that approaches the complexity of the real world and isn't in some sense based off of your own, although I do include deliberate contrast of your own in 'based on'. Nor would I expect to see much of it as a player.

Are there any fairly light fantasy RPGs that have semi-engaging combat systems? I need something where there are some actual tactical options and the PCs are capable of handling multiple attackers reasonably well.

>anything OSR

Unless they've radically overhauled the game, I'll pass. OSR fights are only slightly less boring than 3.5 fights, and everybody being "support for the caster" is not to my liking.

Hyperborean Mice, basically Conan mixed with Secret of NIMH. Combat is simple but getting a critical success over your opponent's defense roll allows you to perform combat maneuvers depending on the weapon you're utilizing. Even before that, you still have several maneuvers you can access.
I'm genuinely surprised not many games have utilized anything similar. The only similar thing I can think of is Dungeon Crawl Classics' Mighty Deed system for warriors.

I felt like recounting one of my recent events in DnD 5th ed, we're a party of three short races running an alchemy shop in town we lovingly dubbed "The Half-Measure", at some point during the campaign we had found ourselves shifting from brewing healing potions to supplying the town's drug trade to the mafia, but that’s a story for another time

I played the Dwarven Fighter (Garil), keeping a watchful eye over the shop, throwing out the no-gooders and riff raff, the second player was a Gnome Artificer (Wrenn), he was our Walter White of the party, doing all the brewing. Lastly was the Halfling Bard (Ashworthy), he was the one who manned the counter and revealed himself to be a scam artist (he sold a bottle of water off as a confidence booster to the duke of the town), despite being a great salesperson himself, he consistently failed his rolls to not get fucked over by other scammers, the irony of that.

So in last night's adventure, we had gotten talked into enlisting in the town's militia to deal with a giant bug problem that was infesting the farmlands. Mostly because the wage would be enough to pay off Ashworthy's somehow still excessive debts to drug dealer and pretty much anyone else he interacted with (as well as money he'd borrowed from us).
14 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Anyway, the guard captain had determined we were the most experienced militiamen available and recruited us to delve into the bug's nest and "remove" the problem. Our silver tongued bard managed to talk the captain into adding a few goodies onto the gold reward, namely a suit of plate armor, and a whore of Ashworthy’s choice (He REALLY wanted to set up a harem in his bedroom).
I’ll skip the gritty details of dragging ourselves through the bug nest, suffice to say the guards lasted longer than we expected and we had not gotten our money’s worth with the mercenary. We retreated after realising we had no means of collapsing the egg room without caving in the place on top of us.
While the gnome and I were hanging around the shop, the bard consulted with our local mafia connection and talked his way into the underground trade of illicit goods, namely Dwarven Blasting Powder. Without consulting the party, he agreed to a 190 gold transaction, despite not knowing how much of the stuff he was buying, or even if it could be delivered within our available time window (The guy would be stealing the powder). Being the proper dwarf I am, I told the Bard to plough himself at the prospect of spending ALL of our money. Obviously being upset at being rejected, he used a 2nd level sleep spell on me, managing to JUST out-roll my HP, (he had to use 2/3 of his Lucky rerolls). After one minute of gentle napping, I awake to our safe being picked clean and our Mafioso laughing at me, having witnessed the entire altercation. He also stole my key to the safe.
>>
The Mafioso takes Garil to the sewer systems where Ashworthy had run off to make the deal. As the deal is about to conclude, a VERY angry Garil bursts into the scene (Think of the Ragged Flagon from Skyrim, but larger). Garil gives Ashworthy the most lethal deathstare he can muster and shouts “OH AM GONTA BEAT YE SO ‘ARD Y’ELL AVE A TWITCH” and charges to dive bomb the bard. Ashworthy, visually shitting himself tried to cast Thunder Wave. Mustering all his resolve he thrusts his hands forward and… Nothing. Nothing happens at all. The room is surrounded by an Antimagic Field. In seconds, Garil has tackled Ashworthy to the floor, yelling “YU THINK YE CAN DO AH MAGIC, EH?” inbetween punching the bard’s face in, We make it through 4 rounds of grappling and pummelling before the bard finally managed to break free from the pinning grip of a furious Dwarf with 10 less hp than before.

At this point, people are actually betting on the fighting, Ashworthy did not have a lot of popularity there… Also keep in mind that at no point did anyone make any of this known to Wrenn, he was still back home sipping his tea and wondering what’s taking us so long.

But I digress. The bard, being the weakling he is, hauls ass towards the ladder we came in on to escape judgement. But there is honor among thieves, Garil calls for someone to grab him and to his delight someone grabs the bard and yanks him from the ladder onto his ass. Unfortunately having failed his athletics and crashing through a table, Garil cannot get his hands on the halfing before he’s already up and running again. Not willing to let him evade his grasp, Garil grabs his shield from his back and hurls it at Ashworthy, slamming him in his gut for a tasty 8 points of damage.
>>
The same idea occurs to the bard however, now being deprived of a shield, Garil doesn’t have a high enough AC to defend against the shield now being thrown at his face. Using his last Luck dice, ashworthy rolls a fucking 20, socking Garil in the teeth and knocking one out. Having been returned his shield, Garil grabs it and charges forwards in a blind rage, being a far better acrobat, Ashworthy attempts to jump over the shield. Garil manages a natural 2 and is awestruck for a brief second as Ashworthy gracefully leaps over him, but only for a second… As he lands, Garil slaps the shield into the Bard and sends him skyrocketing over some tables, knocking him out cold. Garil revels in the cheers of the crowd and the jeers of one guy who bet on Ashworthy. Garil then proceeds to honor Ashworthy’s deal, handing over the gold, though not before returning the favour and knocking out one of the Bard’s front teeth.

And thus concluded our day’s adventure, instead of being good Samaritans, our party beats the shit out of each other over how to be one.

Thanks for slogging through this :P

Spiritualism fits best for any sort of shamans or foreign priests like that. It fits well for the belief systems of those cultures that tend to have lots and lots of spirits and entities that range from small to godlike, contrasting with more European style where there's more of a monotheistic influence and leaning, where there's a clear line between what's a god and what's just some minor entity.

Anyone played this yet? I've almost gotten a game with it twice, the second time got all the way to character creation, but both times real life got in the way.

Overall I think it's got problems, but honestly it's getting progressively easier to run as the comic fleshes out the setting. The changes in the new edition are also good. Hopefully it'll be strong enough to run confidently by the time the final version is released.

Anyway, here's the most recent PDF.

It's a cool comic, but too bad they chose Apocalypse World as a base for the RPG. Could have been something good.

It actually fits the comic's tone pretty well unlike most AW hacks. Though I could see them doing it in a totally different system like that one Wuxia d6 game.

I've always felt it was a huge mistake for the artist to use what they're worst at (faces) for the cover.
