Welcome to the /L5Rg/ once again, samurai of the /tg/ province. This week's breaking news is the Crab finally got their short story in the ongoing clan previews for FFG's LCG:

https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/news/2017/7/5/dark-hands-of-heaven/

For those not in the know, L5R has been bought out by Fantasy Flight Games who are finally nearing the release of the next edition of the card game. If you want to know more about their LCG work, click the 'All Related News' button on the right of that page. So far we've seen fluff and card previews for the Crane, Lion, and Dragon and now we have /tg/'s favorite clan on the block.

This thread is dedicated to new LCG talk, RPG questions and stories, and even the CCG for those who are still playing for fun.

Gay ass fiction, fampai. It alternates weeks. One week is the clan fiction, the next week is the clan's card preview. From the few leaked cards, Crab have a defensive Holding thing going on as well as card sacrifice mechanics to buff others.

So that samurai who died, that was Hida O-Ushi's mother right?

So, I talked to my friends tonight. It's my turn behind the screen next, and half the grouop prefers a narrative game while the other half likes a more gamist style. To me, the best kind of game for this would be something like Log Horizon, Sword Art Online, .hack, etc. Something where the mechanics are part of the story, or treated as a set piece.

My question is: Is there a game that can achieve this kind of MMO-like progression out of the box without a lit of fiddling or extra work?

Whoops. Looks like I submitted before actually writing the post.

The protagonists have just cornered the Villain's henchman in Greece and are about to learn the secret of the Villain's power. Thing is I'm not sure how I should make his power for an interesting finale, as the player characters will be heading directly to the villain for a confrontation.

Here's what the party knows about the bad guy, Herman Zi:

1. Is a vampire that was buried underground for 130 years.
2. Developed a Stand Power while underground.
3. Was rescued by Henchman, who trained him for the purpose of making him powerful.
4. Stand can make extremely large spherical holes in things, we're talking entire buildings or mountain peaks.
5. Each time the power is used, it gets stronger.
6. Sometimes stuff that was previously hit by the power re-appears.
7. His Stand can prevent sunlight from touching his skin.

My original plan was to have his Stand [Dragon Force] able to teleport things to precisely the opposite side of the Sun. But how can the players defeat him with a power like that?
>>
>>54211693
We're gonna need to know the players' powers to know what's possible, dude.

Joshua Joestar, and his Stand『Fabrication』, made of living metal that can form tools and drones.
Nole "The Malestrom" Nalestom and his Stand 『Super Beast』, power of making any inorganic object soft or stretchy.
Feel Fresh and his Stand 『Take On Me』, power of Hooks that mind control people.
Captain Frank Black and his Stand 『Wave of Mutilation』, power of swarm of tiny stands that can control water and provide remote touch. Also has Hamon.

What's a character that you've always wanted to use but never got around to actually using?

Like the setting never comes up or it comes off as JUUUUST a little "magical realm" for your usual stories or play throughs?
12 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
I've got a few of those, although partially used characters are a way worse issue.

Characters I made for games which never started or died a few sessions in. So many of them float around, waiting for a game they might call home, and even then I end up making new characters most of the time anyway. And when games fall through, more are added to the list.

Still, I occasionally get to clear entries. Even if a game isn't entirely finished, as long as I feel like a characters personal story has had a pretty good run, I'm generally able to let them rest at that.

Ever since I got the egypt itch again, I wanted to roll a tabaxi but a jackal instead, dual wielding a khopesh and shortsword.

That and if I could find a balanced minotaur stat... Some say just use half orc and give a horn ability but idk.

Usually play humanoids so want to see some other options that could be played.

This is a game idea I've just begun work on.

The game: the players will be playing anarchist punks in the modern day (modern day almost earth) and they will be fighting "the man" and "the system" through revolution and chaos.

HOWEVER the *twist* being that the players are being told theyre playing a medieval game with knights and such. the players will be dropped into a (non magic) world where this kingdom has been taken over by these monsters, oppressive pig beasts, they've got society in their hands and oppress the people. the players goal will be to end the tyranny of the evil monsters.

the way this is achieved is the characters in order to retain control have to inject this concoction (this concoction will be a drug theyre all hooked on) every few hours or risk losing control. during missions when their high is coming down they will get weird glimpses of this concrete and iron world, making them think this is them falling under the illusion.

thoughts?

I don't like the sound of it, frankly. In my experience, genre bait-and-switch campaigns are one of those ideas that every GM has, that every one of them tries at some point, and that never play out as well in practice as it sounds in your head. I've never seen anyone run such a game and have the execution go well enough that it justifies it.

"Your characters think they're doing X, but *really* they're doing Y", what does that add to the campaign? I mean really? I've never seen it add depth, or open up story avenues that otherwise wouldn't be options, or really serve as an improvement. It's a conceit, a gimmick. Not worth doing.

I hope your party consist of rainbow-haired girls, and at least one had asiatish ancestry?
But idea seems fine. Most difficult part is writing parallel real world story [gazetteer, tabloids, news, etc], to reflect things what they done while was junked up and saving kingdom, to reveal it at the moment when party shrugs off illusion
>>
>>54209912
...but why tho?

Lots of questions and stuff that doesn't line up. Injection drugs aren't really a medieval thing. Also unless they're born addicted and raised delusional there isn't anything to make them think this. Also how does it make there not be guns, cops, escalators, etc.? The amount of delusion required to pass off a skyline seems like it would make actually doing anything impossible. Team black already gets their heads kicked in fighting state power directly, it would be even worse if they thought they were knights or some shit.

Casual MTG player here. I'm thinking about attending a prelease for a very first time tomorrow.

What should I expect? Should I study all the cards from HoD in order to have fun or can I just go in blind? How different is sealed from a draft?
14 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>54209376
Sealed is less dependent on skill and more on luck than draft is, because your card pool is pre-determined and can't be affected by interaction with other drafters.
Knowledge of cardpool is always helpful. Partially to judge relative strength of the cards, partially to know what you're up against.
Stick to two colors, 3 if you have fixing.
>>
Your last question is easiest to answer. Draft is when you and 7 other people get three packs (each) and pass cards around until you make a deck. Sealed (the prerelease) is when you get 6 packs (in this case 4 hour of devastation and 2 packs of amonkhet) and you build a deck out of those packs.

With if you should look at the cards or not, it's all a matter of how confident you are on your deck building abilities and card evaluation abilities are. You can totally walk in blind and build a deck that rekts the house. You can also know every card by heart and still struggle to get wins in. I personally like finding out what cards are just because I like the discovery, but you're totally fine going there with no knowledge of the cards.

Honestly you should expect a casual environment. Sure, there are prizes, but it's very relaxed in the fact that 1: a lot of people haven't seen these cards before, 2: not everyone is a pro player and doesn't play competitively and 3: I forgot my 3rd point.
>>
>>54209424
>>54209544
I think I will just go in blind. I don't feel like spending the rest of my night studying cards.

Now I made a "superhero systems do high fantasy better than high fantasy based games" thread a while ago, and while a good portion of people agreed, there were some that thought that a superhero system was too much power even for high fantasy. There were also some complaints about certain "martial" healing abilities being able to get people up "with encouragement".

The thing is in Darkest Dungeon, a game that's low magic, gritty, and highly lethal, characters that are "good at fighting" don't need magic to do other things besides attack. Man At Arms can use things like Command and Bolster to buff up his party using nothing but his guidance, and other "not magic" users can buff themselves.

Why is this kind of utility in tabletop associated with "superheroes" and not usable in "grounded" campaigns?
219 posts and 6 images submitted.
>>
bump because I want this to be explored but I have no clue how to answer it.
>>
>>54208862

From the people who are actually complaining, nothing.

Their complaints aren't rational, they're based in the dumb 3.PF double standard that only spellcasters are allowed to have nice things.

As you point out, in vidya and, heck, in most other RPG's it isn't a thing, but a vocal minority of the RPG community still cling to it as if it is somehow objectively correct.

Personally, I'm fine with Martials doing all sorts of things. Healing, guarding allies, buffs and debuffs, special maneuvers of all kinds. Although Darkest Dungeon uses it differently, the various movement manipulation abilities they get are also very cool.
>>
>>54208862
There are plenty of systems grounded in reality where martials have a lot of options in combat, I wouldn't use a superhero system for that kind of game though, that being said martials still need more options than what's offered in 3.pf and 5e

In one of my games I'm planning on having the players enter a city ruled by Greek!elves who take the whole "we're perfect and vain" thing to the extreme by literally choosing the most beautiful amongst them to rule.

How would such a society work? What would this system be called?
13 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
Didn't MtG's Lorwyn already do exactly this?
>>
I can only imagine the fucking conspiracies are brutal. Do you know how fast a ruler who's the most beautiful would go out?

>Get into power
>The person you were running against has a goon throw acid on your face
>That goon might be arrested, but you're ugly now, you lose, your competitor is now the ruler and pardons the goon.

>Anywhere you go people are trying to secretly fuck you over so that their contacts can become slightly more beautiful and go up the ranks farther than you.

>Even if you are able to stay safe and pretty, you'll be slightly less pretty in a couple of years
>Someone else will take over and you'll be demoted because of your ugly ass.

Perfect chaos.
>>
>>54208268

Yep. They even had assassins whose job was not to kill, but to scar, to destroy someones position within the society.

Wait, even better: be a Fighter and select the Purple Dragon Knight but fluff it so that you're not actually a member of the PDKs, you just idolize them. Take the Noble background and the Knight variant.

Put your WORST SCORES in Wisdom, Strength, and Dexterity (wisdom MUST be worst) but your BEST scores in Intelligence and Charisma.

Fluff yourself as an old man who had actually never picked up a sword nor fought anyone in his life before, but rather lived a rather quiet life in Greenest...but read great books about the heroes of the Forgotten Realms from ages long past. The coming of the Cult to Greenest somehow at once broke your sanity and clarified it, and you conceived of the strangest project ever imagined: to become a knight-errant, to sally forth into the world in search of adventure! To write all wrongs, to mount a crusade, to raise up the weak and those in need!

No longer would you be plain Alonso Quijana, but a dauntless knight, known as...

DON QUIXOTE DE LA MANCHA!

No, but seriously, it is my dream to one day play Don Quixote in a D&D game.
