Shameless Self Bump

So, about three sessions ago, my "kill the dragon priest" campaign has derailed, but in a fun way. My PCs vent from "smiting the evil guys" to "mafia tycoons". At this point, they own a gambling den, two caravan resting taverns and a small guild of scribes. With their last acquisition, however, when they integrated old Dueargar tribe into their operations to smuggle not-heroin to Northern kingdoms, they chewed off a bit more, then they might handle.

After they have killed initial mafia boss and owner of gambling den/caravan resupply points/scribe guild, they were left with former mafia boss henchman Simon who they now kept as their henchman. Now, Simon was an upstarty guy from the start and he connected with Duergars, willing to leave them entire PC operations and taking only all gold and silver of PCs he and Duergars together kill the PCs.

So, things are getting (possibly) rather dark for our PC crime syndicate.

I however, do not want to go full "hurr durr, you are poisoned&attacked by a bunch of assassins", but I'd like to present them with quite a few clues and warnings, give them a chance to prepare for incoming series of attacks, if they are perceptive.

What kind of things should I prepare for them to explain to them hostile takeover may be coming?

thanks

Before it, let them fight another minor antagonists, who will tell and show them that "honor amongst thieves" is not a thing. Then have another minor antagonist, who will fight them because they are outsiders who have no honor and respect for the system.
Both should clue the party in on where they stand, and what they should do.

What are some good systems for peasant->demigod campaigns?

D&D is honestly terrible for this nowadays.
1- it takes too long to level up by RAW
and
2- at no point are you actually a peasant. Most PCs are already within the top .1 percentile of their species.

I want a system where a character can start out as a genuinely average (or even kind of shit) person, and eventually rise to the rank of legend purely through hard work and the power of friendship

D&D 4e with level 0 start is actually suitably deadly.

There's also DCC which is based around starting as peasants who have about a 1:4 survival chance, but they don't really get to be demigods.

Maybe you could do something like a pointbuy game starting with low points and then handing out a lot. Something like Savage Worlds starting with low stats , or GURPS/M&M/other point buy things.

Technically you are still talented, but you are really a piece of shit compared to a 1st level character (about 1/4th in strength).

Dungeon Crawl Classics, Zweihander, and Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay. Be sure to check your local store OP, DCC passed out an adventure for free RPG day that includes the rules for character creation.

I'm wondering what a good model would look like for a Paid Dungeon Master experience.
I live in a pretty big metropolitan area, and I think I could probably run 15-20 sessions in a month. I'm just not sure how I would approach the payment / pricing plans.

charge per session
charge per person
charge per hour

do I include materials that players keep, or charge extra? (like minis and character sheets)

what about long term, ongoing campaigns? Do they get discounts if they buy more sessions upfront?

should I bother with patreon and shit like that or just advertise at the local shops?

>>53969051
I'd do it in packages.
For example

Package A would be theater of the mind (so no mini's) , smaller number of players and 2 or 3 hours long. You want to get the hipsters with this, it will be your bread and butter

Package B would be much more focused on minis and should be a subscription for a long term campaign. Like levels 1-14 or whatever. have a fuck ton of minis that actually represent the monsters, even some real scenery and props.

Or just charger per session and per person, more players is more difficult to work with so you should get paid more.
>>
>>53969051
I would pay for something like this. But only if the GM was "professional" tier good.

You would need both 1 shot sessions with a slick execution, premade characters and an adventure you are intimately familiar with running, and longer running campaigns on a subscription basis.

The 1 shots are for drawing in new customers, the longer campaigns are your steady income.

Run it in a private, quiet, professional setting and spend a lot of time getting the atmosphere right and making it clean and comfortable for your customers.

Don't make players pay for dice, sheets, minis etc, it will make some people feel scammed. Include the cost of these materials in your upfront pricing. Obviously this doesn't include snacks, drinks, souvenirs etc, or if the players want to purchase their dice/minis.

Patreon, I don't think so, unless you want to broadcast material on the internet. Which you should expand into, but it will require a more complicated operation.
>>
>>53969051
One thing i will say is don't run your sessions out of your own home

If you had to design a plant a prey animal to feed on it and a predator animal to feed on it.
For either a world thats 99% water with extremely lush mini islands and large cavernous caves.
A world that shifts from a total ice age for 6 months of the year cycle and then a hellish scorched earth for the other 6 or a world completely made of flesh and organs similar to a human body. What would they be like?
If you have any different environments or scenarios go ahead.

>>
>>53966118
a world thats 99% water is obviously gonna have extremely diverse sea life, life on the islands, depending on how small and far apart they are, is goping to be extremely niche and may be unlike anything else on the planet
a planet that shifts between extremes like that every season would probably have seasonal animals that choose to hybernate during their off seasons, digging deep into the ground to escape the elements and emerging in their preferred climate.

a flesh would is gonna be pretty alien, but I imagine life on that would exist in a similar manner to creatures that live on/in flesh here, parasitically, likely feeding on the endless supply of blood and flesh under their feet. there'd be almost no point to predation. Though the logistics on how a flesh planet would work are pretty questionable. Does it itself need to eat?
>>
>>53967257
The flesh planet recycles any dead matter that isn't consumed by the other creatures into new life or landmass.
>>
>>53967305
>>53967257
The Water World's Cave Systems have main entrances that descend down below the seabed and run all across the planet.
and the radical shift planet has it happen on a instantaneous level.

What are some quest threads that had/have good mechanics and rules?

I'm going to be starting a forum game and the nature of the medium means it will have to be run a bit differently than the usual face-to-face setup.

I would ask this on /qst/ but we're not allowed to talk ABOUT quest threads on that board, so this is the next best place to ask about games. Thank you!

I think it's safe to assume GW will be pushing more Primaris equivalents as time goes on, but I do think you're right. Traditional marines are in no danger of being rendered obsolete with regards to fluff.

While I've done more freeform/improv RP, and I also enjoy board and wargames, RPG's are my favourite because I feel like the combination of both is more than the sum of its parts.

I'm not just playing a character or engaging in storytelling with my friends, I'm also engaging with interesting and enjoyable systems that help guide the story in interesting directions or create tangible, mechanical consequences to actions. Meanwhile, the roleplaying side also adds extra depth and concerns when the mechanics come to play, forcing me to consider actions through the lens of my character.

RPG's take more investment than most other media, some demanding hours of time before the game can even begin, but I get so much out of them that I feel like it's always worth it, and the stories my friends and I have told together, the amazing battles we've fought in worlds of our own creation, are things I'll remember for the rest of my life.
>>
>>54214912
>What do you like about RPGs, fa/tg/uy?
It's the most interactive storytelling there is besides freeform, and the problem with freeform is that it is usually unimaginative.

How would /tg/ design a lightweight RPG dice system similar to FFG's Star Wars/Genesys using only D6's?

I really like the narrative dice from Edge Of The Empire, etc. But the combat and skills are a little too crunchy, and the proprietary dice are expensive. Blank D6's are cheap, easy to find, and available in many colors/sizes, so that seems like the ideal choice for a homebrew dice system.

>>54213624
I'm wanting something like the narrative dice system in FFG star wars. Basically, every roll has a success/failure axis and a threat/advantage axis. So you can "succeed with a bonus", "succeed with a cost", "fail with bonus", or "fail with cost". You roll a dice pool of good/bad dice, count up positive/negative icons, and that's your result.

One Roll Engine is kinda similar, but with a D10 pool, and more math.

When you think about it, Space Marines are really the ONLY army you can't play with female models. Orks don't count because even though they're called boyz, they're sexually neutral.

Every other army can include women in some way.

I'm going to pull from my book. It's called The Elsewilds.

The Basillica
- This is a city built by the Malgarii, squid-faced creatures created by the Primordial, and banished to the center of the Moon. They are lead by the Princess of the Moon, a human girl with magic powers called a sleepwaker. Lying is lethal to them, but they use colorful language to get around the truth. L/E

The Grand Library
- A colorful city where every living being who can dream has their life story written in real time and stored away at their death by thousands of scribes. The Librarians were killed, and replaced with the Host of Many. A parasitic bug that attaches to the faces of the sleepwakers, and takes over their bodies, wearing them out and filling them with eggs before cocooning them, and having a public ceremony attaching to a new unwilling host. N/E

The Mechalith
- A giant floating monolith where the Simulacrum live. Tall, beautiful people with sharp features who never age. They are synthetic, and have split into castes, where the lowest castes are sacrificed and cannibalized for parts for the ruling caste. N/N

The Circus
- Home of the Hobs and Goblins. They were ruled by a king who was killed by one of his sons. The seven Jacks, his sons and generals, were either killed or banished. The Jack of Lanterns wants his father's kingdom back, but the Jack of Cats is in power. C/E

The Terminus
- A citadel and prison above a great infinite pit surrounded by waterfalls and suspended by chains. The Primevil is imprisoned here. This is where the King of Nightmares lives, an ancient sleepwaker who entered the Elsewilds thousands of years ago as a defector German soldier in the Roman army. N/E

The Duergar
- Stour, hairy, cave dwelling people. They are lead by Maga, the matron mother. She lead the Neanderthals from Earth after the Primevil was captured and imprisoned.

The rest of the lands are home to other mythical creatures, and humans warped through generations in the Elsewilds.

Bariovians tend to be extremely weary of outsiders to begin with.

If those outsiders are non-humans, that weariness could quickly turn into outright racism.

Not sure why you would allow Dragonborn and Tieflings in a CoS campaign in the first place though...

You're stupid.

The d20 system does not allow a player to call literally any action and then roll with a possibility of success. Part of your job as DM is to tell players whether they can or can't roll for shit. You don't have to let a player roll to pluck the moon out of the sky because HURRR NAT 20 IS AN AUTO SUCCESS. It's your game. Don't let players do stupid shit.
