Have you ever included the illuminati in your games or encountered them in another's game?
14 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
Setting depending, I've seen them both show up as the "Sex, drugs, & Rockefeller" type, and the "Why contain it?" type.
I like them best as not necessarily "bad' people, but simply ones who enjoy having and using power. They're strictly nonmoral. They do what they do because it benefits them, and that's it. They're very into white-collar crime and are generally pleasant people, you just can't trust them unless you are one, and even then...

Triads/Yakuza cover are best encountered as with low-tier thugs to high-end assassins that tie back to international empires doing corporate dirty work.
Free masons can be morally inclined do-gooders who don't actually get much done, but can usually lend a helping hand, and are reasonably good about keeping mum on clandestine topics. If the Free masons know something, the Illuminati knows, the Triads/Yakuza knows, etc., but the people who won't know are the common folk and perhaps small or low-level government types.

I've never seen the KKK show up in a game, but I do like their use in Conan-Doyle's "The Five Orange Pips," where they're basically international, politically motivated killers operating from a steamship.
Mind you, I would never use the KKK in a game, because 1) the organization actually exists (I don't use Free masons by name either) 2) the organization has an incredibly convoluted past 3) folks will immediately assume them to be generic bad guy racists no matter how presented (read the "Five Pips," you'll see what I mean.)

There's not many other secret societies I hit up, since those groups cover most of the narrative bases. I just change the external flavor as needed (non-chinese Triads, but they still operate the same, for example).

What table top game has (in your opinion) the best combat system and why?

I havnt played too many games. Just a bunch of D&D and some GURPS. I can't stand D&D anymore, because I prefer low magic, low fantasy, gritty realism, and tactical combat. I'm sure GURPS seems like it'd be up my alley, but for some reason my group never has fun when we play it.

For the kind of thing you prefer, Riddle of Steel and its successors like Song of Swords are pretty renowned for a fantastic combat system.

Personally my favourite is Legends of the Wulin, but that's a completely different thing.

In the kingdom of Midgard has come a new time - a time of change and new beginnings. Adventurers and pilgrims have set their sights to the north, where lies the great forest Ellathar, once - the dreaded land of elves where no human dared to trail. But as its ancient masters have abandoned it, the fearless fools have elected a new name for it - the Borderlands. A land of unclaimed riches and countless opportunities, calling for the strong, the brave and the daring to settle it and find a new life for themselves.
This is a story of unlikely heroes, who came to this new land from all corners of the world, each for their own reasons. But our story does not begin in Ellathar, but rather to the south of it.
In the infamous Spiderwoods.

Well, /tg/, it's writefaggotry time. This one will not be in the format of a greentext yet - I'll listen to the feedback and change things if necessary. Maybe greentext will be used some of the times, or I'll switch to it entirely - and rewrite the posted story to fit it.

Yes, I'm glad somebody remembers it. But it's an indirect one, with a different plot and characters. But if you want to see Fiona or Gunnar, don't worry, you'll get to meet familiar faces. Eventually.

Maybe, it all started when a man lying by a river started slowly drifting back into consciousness - and with his very first thought, he immediately regretted it. His head rang in pain, and no matter how hard he tried to stand up, he could not find enough strength in his aching body. It took him a few failed attempts to realize that he can’t win this struggle, but eventually he gave up and tried something that made him hurt less - thinking.
How did he even end up in the middle of nowhere, beaten and bruised? The more he thought about it, the more puzzled he became. He could not remember it - and neither he could remember who did such a number on him.
“Who…”
In a single moment, his confusion evaporated into nothing, as dread stepped in its place. Those woods being unfamiliar to him was the least of his worries, for he suddenly understood that he could not remember anything at all - not what came before, not whom to seek help from, and not even his hometown or name.
He laid there, weak and confused, as he stared into the blue sky above. “At least I’m alive” - he found the silver lining eventually. Resting and gathering his strength, he listened to the soothing sounds of the forest - while they could not help him up, at least the songs sung by forest birds could calm his chaotic thoughts.
He could not remember for how long did he lie there, before amidst the sounds of the forest he heard heavy footsteps. And then - a voice.
“Hey, you there! That’s no place to sleep at! Come on now, get up.”
He groaned, as he struggled to lift his head, so he could see his visitor - and in a few moments, he could. The stranger was a woman - an extremely short woman wearing a suit of chainmail. From her leather belt hung a hammer.
“A dwarf” - he realized after a moment of confusion. And then he wondered when he even remembered what a dwarf was.

So, long story short, one of my players's caracter barfed up a kitten. It's obviously a magical kitten but I was trying to think of "abilities" I could give it.

So far, it subsists entirely off of beer and can randomly change colors. Any suggestions for more abilities or background?

At various occasions throughout the adventure, the cat will make different animal noises. Sometimes at random, sometimes at seemingly planned or opportune moments, like a lions roar that scares away a pack of wolves, or a horses shinny that calms the parties mounts in a moment of panic.

Time to kill a planetary governor.

You have been given a Stalker pattern Boltgun and and two reloads, you are free to kill the governor in anyway you see fit, provided you can get yourself in a position to dispatch him. But the complication is that you HAVE to use the Boltgun somehow.

So /tg/ how do you do it?

I need some ideas /tg/.

I'm playing Hero System 5e, in fantisy hero. The GM is making us buy spells based on effect with a 60 AP limit. I could use some help coming up with mage or tank breaking spells.

I have an NND that conjures chili powder in the sinus cavity of the enemy, and only does stun described as pain.

Any ideas to make the group look on in horror would be awesome.

What rules? Are you using hit locations, if so buy penalty skill levels to offset penalties.

+60 strength, Armor or Forcefield maxed to 60 point limit, low damage HKA or RKA AoE 1 hex with the rest dumped into Stun multiplier and Rapid fire, Abuse megascale. abuse find weakness, etc... Its not hard to cheese Hero, but I will say its a dick move if everybody else is playing straight.

Not that the Dune allusions needed to be more overt, but just for the sake of the it: how would the Imperium of Mankind from Warhammer 40,000 had been different if its iconography and cultural aesthetics had been inspired by the Islamic golden age (and its eventual downfall following the Closing of the Gate of Ijtihad) rather than the history of the Catholic Church?

>>
>>54287140
The Imperium is pretty Christian, aesthetically. You can't replace those influences and expect nothing to change
>>
>>54287022
It'd have been only a little different. Honestly the style likely exists in-universe given the tens of thousands of words the Imperium rules over.

ITT: creative magical items that any high level character could make.

Pathfinder -Dick Tome: A 100-page tome covered from back to cover with magic missiles on both sides. (200 magic missiles of CL9 total). A single word triggers all 200 magic missiles, each one releasing 5 missiles. As magic missile's shape is up to the caster, these missiles are shaped like big green cocks. Damage is 1000d4+1000 (3500 average)

How do you make these steaming piles of garbage worth there points. When that's a heavy weapons team or two.

Heavy Flamers on individual Scout sentinels.
Moderate threat to infantry, distract AT weapons from your more valuable vehicles and brings you a step closer to fielding a brigade.
>>
>>54286002

I've never gotten sentinels in the setting..

They are expensive to build, have a crap firing arc, are completely exposed.

I would kind of get it for other armies, even marines. But with guard , who are expendable as hell, why not use personnel to scout instead of these expensive fragile things
>>
thats my thoughts but its either that rough riders or hellhounds to make a brigade and they're all expensive options when there's better bang for your buck

Players live as farmers in an idealized agrarian setting. Their main problems revolve around who gets to woo the cutest girl in the village. The villain is some jerk who's too much of a bumbling idiot to ever have any hope of getting the girl, but is still annoying to be around. Everyone's parents are still alive. Everyone in the village knows eachother.

Hi guys

My group wants me to run a horror themed campaign and I need some advise.

They told me to run wild and create anything that'd scare the pants off of them, but I have trouble creating a more general sense of horror.

Normally I tailor scenarios I want to have an emotional impact to the player involved.

But it's pretty shit in this scenario, since having just one person out of five piss them whilst everyone else is sitting their bored is a terrible thing in an atmospheric campaign.

I haven't got anything set in stone yet, but I would like to capture the feeling of the original The Thing movie. I just loved that sense of permanent dread, mixed with the occasional explosive reveal to mix things up.

I'll be popping back in occasionally to bump the thread and post nightmare fuel to help inspire us, or keep us up all night if things go tits up.

Make it so that the players are inadvertently involved in the horror at first. For instance, a town suffering famine, the only place in town with any food is the lord's manor. That strange meat you've been gritting through that he tells you is horse meat? Well, there are missing villagers around town and...
>>
>>54285299
The key to effective horror is calling cards. Players should associate and conflate certain situational details with whatever the big spook is, so that when you start repeating that detail they will know things are about to go down. Alternatively, you can have such a detail be omnipresent but unexplained, then reveal its meaning in the climax.

Example of a game I ran, with information given in the order the player's learned it:
>players are sent to small village to find out why their yearly shipment of wool has not arrived.
>When they arrive, they find out the sheep have been disappearing, and the locals blame some kind of beast.
>It turns out, two days ago a pair of brothers set out into the forest, and reportedly killed the beast, though only one brother returned.
>The two brothers were Heinrich and Ira. Heinrich was a well thought of guy, and basically the quarterback of the town, while Ira was often overlooked.
>Despite being celebrated and even getting some action from a few of Heinrich's former fangirls, Ira seems sullen.
>The next day, a few of the sheep return, and more praise is heaped on Ira.
>The players notice some of the immigrant farmers from other lands are busy moving stones in their fields, and it is revealed that there are small, double-lines of stones coming from the forest. Some farmers see it as an omen, though others believe that it has somehow led the sheep back.
>Another day passes, and Heinrich returns.
>Ira confronts the players at night, crazed, and tells them he needs their help. Ira leads them into the forest.
>He explains that whatever returned cannot be Heinrich, because he killed him the night he went out to slay the beast in the woods.
>Ira shows them a wolf they killed, which Heinrich wanted to bring back so he could claim they had killed the beast. Ira protested, saying that a lone wolf could not have killed so many sheep in such a short time. They had a brief fight and Heinrich fell into a cave.
>>
>>54285402
contd.
>The players go down into the cave and find a skinless corpse with its feet removed, along with sheep bones, though they notice something strange.
>The floor of the cave is covered in swirling grooves, like those of a fingerprint.
>Deeper in the cave they find statues of strange creatures similar to a man, but with emaciated frames, skeletal features, and with legs terminating in pointed blades.
>Returning to the mouth of the cave, they find a fresh corpse, similar to the first, and Ira is gone.
>Upon returning to town they find Ira, who reacts with confusion when they mention their meeting with him, even going so far as to suggest that they leave. As everything has clearly resolved itself.
>While they were gone the rest of the sheep returned.
