Sure, i'd allow it. Friendly sparring would be allowed and they could gain exp from it. But i'd also remind them that sparring still drains their resources (spell slots, once-per-day abilities, etc.)

If anything, an interrupted training session could make for a fun encounter with wandering NPC's or enemies.

Assuming they're already good enough to make each other better, yes. Make a roll or two. High means it works. Low means you failed. 1s mean you injured yourself and will be hampered somehow for the next session.

How do you get players to focus more on character interaction and actual roleplay? How do you make parts of the game that aren't combat more interesting?

My players tend to treat the game more like a video game than anything, only really focused in dungeons and combat situations.
Which sounds like it could be an issue when wanting to run a campaign more focused on simple exploration and day to day life for adventurers, which isn't to say it's not going to have dungeons and monsters to fight, I'd just like the other parts of the game to be interesting as well. Have stuff like making resting and camping important to give players more opportunity to be their characters.

I DM a long running game that's about 50% roleplay, but when I'm a player on Sundays, I prefer to play something more module-esque.

In an effort to convert df adventure mode into a nwod splatbook, I've managed to change genius: the transgression into a semi workable, mostly broken dwarf fortress d10 rpg game.

The problem is that in order to dumb df down I've had to almost make my own setting. If anyone is interested I'll post it later when/if it gets finished.

So /tg/ I really dropped the ball on my first session dming, not only did I railroad my players into their first quest but the railroad also took forever and I was a super awkward stammering mess about it. Everyone liked it in the end and there mid quest all talking about being excited for the next session but Im really worried about my ability to just talk to players in character and to lead them into doing what I want. Any advice on these specific topics also general newgm advice thread.

Let go of the anxiety that you will fuck up. You will fuck up, eventually. Your players enjoyed what you made for them. Even if it was a railroad, it seemed that they were willing to ride the rails and take in the sights. If you personally find this distasteful, start making two or three plot points that your players can choose from. Try to flesh each of these out such that if your players chose one, you will have one or two sessions worth of material to work with. Then get used to the fact that 2/3rds of what you work on will never get used.

Whatever you do, don't tell your players what they're missing out on. That robs them of the mystery of the world and makes their agency feel cheap in the world. If you want a good example of why this is important, google Gary Gygax Golden Man, a story about a dungeon element Gygax put in his game that his players never figured out and the secret to which he took with him to his grave.

Also, learn to improvise. The best DMs improvise 50% or more of their games, and it also means less work and less work wasted for you.

It is a portal to another dimension that shows up in random locations. At the minute it is in some random mall car park. The being that live in this other dimension is were we get the archetype of werewolves, vampires and other beasts. The reason it is a laundrette is so these being can clean the blood off their close as they wait for the building to return to their dimension.
