If I wanted feedback on RPG or gameplay mechanics because I'm trying to figure out if I should take things in a more freeform and narrative direction or decide if I want to go make it into a board game so I don't need such complex rules, should I do that on /tg/ or /qst/?

The gist of it is I have this idea for an Igor-like game where you and up to 3 friends are mad scientists trying to become the ruler of your spooky kingdom by building Frankeinsteinian monsters and competing in a series of epic challenges. Of course, you don't have to just win the challenges; you can just attack a rival's monster and try to claim victory through battle. And if you lose your monster, you can go mad and become a monster hunter, leading the oppressed serfs against the existing power structure. Maybe. I'm still on the fence about that.

I have a couple gameplay ideas that I want to test out, and with /tg/ having a dice roller I figure it would be convenient. But then I'm just wondering if it'd fall afoul of the Quest Sticky.

Arabian Nights is such a great game. Hope you have fun OP.

For me it's a copy of the expansion for the old FFG Doom boardgame. It's a surprisingly great game, but the expansion is nigh on impossible to find.

Oh, and a complete copy of Heroquest. I had one, but as a kid I played it so much most of the components are broken or lost by this point, it's fucking tragic.

It's a cute little roleplaying game set in an Arabian Nights setting, it's all about roleplaying the results which are random events basically.

So I'm writing a setting to make a comfy, romantic world.

Here's what I have so far.
>a special kind of person can Inbue objects with life
>the objects imbued have to have emotional ties to the person.

The medium also changes the objects powers, books drawings, sculptures, toys, dolls. All are objects that work.

What kind of powers would you give the different mediums? What could be done to improve this?

Magnitude of emotional attachment affects the scope of ability.
Example: You can make a doodle you scribbled dance, but you can impart a painting of your beloved departed family with an independent will.
>>
>>54275653
Basically you guys seen Rosen maiden?
That can happen, but with drawings and imperial guard. And they don't have to kill each other

Fictional characters come to life, possess some of the characters Attitude but are their own thing.

Wats another way to explore sufficiently advanced magic is technology(and it's corollary, sufficiently advanced tech is magic)

I've got these dwarves in my setting. They had a once glorious empire under the earth, with "highways" that led from city-state to city-state u der the earth. They had golems, programmed to understand and interpret command, crafted from metal bodies and shining crystaline gems. They had guns that spewed pure light and energy instead of shot and powder. They crafted wondrous cities full of modern conveniences. And then they vanished from the world, leaving a single kingdom in their wake, to carry on the legacy of the Allfather.

Considering I've already banked on the setting elves being the physical/magical half-breeds how crazy would it be to make the ancient dwarves the precursor race? Racial memory, psychometry, "nanotech without the robots" kinds of material masters?

Desperate op bump

I'm kinda self-convinced to work living metal into the game, and maybe have the prehistory of the place be "fantasy world built by precursors, populated by their slaves"

Convince me I'm crazy/not crazy?

Depends on how far you're going to take it. Are they the source/inspiration for every modern piece of magic/technology in your setting?

It could be interesting if you take it all the way. If you don't take it farther than it currently is, or tweak it a bit, then they sound similar to the Dwemer/Dwarves from TES. Though they were more "Sufficiently advanced steampunk is indistinguishable from magic" I guess, so you're already a step away from them in that regard.

Also are all the Dwarves completely gone? Or do some remain? If there are those that remain, are they aware of how this magitech works, or are they in the dark like everyone else?
>>
>>54276675
Good questions

It would certainly be a twist. And there's not really a precedent ingame so far. The dwarves living now are a strong kingdom, but none of them have the knowledge of their forefathers. The Craft of it is lost, certainly.

The party already encountered a lost keep, where the clan of dwarves descended into barbarism and villainy, becoming mad dreugar possessed by black magic. The group knows the dwarves lost a lot with the ikd empire falling away. They know quite well how far they can fall.

A fellow neckbeard bought me a copy of that My Little Pony RPG, "Curse of the Statuettes" as a joke for my birthday. But it gave me a trollish idea. I went over it with my DM and conspired with him to secretly run the campaign for our group's latest pathfinder session. We kept our regular characters and just changed all NPCs into relevant races for our setting. We also left out nearly all mention of ponies, but to fuck with the players the DM kept in all references to friendship and love etc... So when ability tests came up where the party was using violence to solve the problem instead of diplomatically, they'd begin to be penalized. It was really mindfucking them and making them paranoid that they were being mind controlled or manipulated somehow. Finally, at the end the ruse was discovered when the party found the statues of all the victims in the game thus far and encountered the "Door of Harmony". One of the players decided to examine the statues closer, the DM told him some weren't human, the player asked with an annoyed, knowing smirk if they were ponies, cue DM's shit eating grin. You should've seen their faces. Still, it's nice to have fun and mix things up once in awhile. Pic not related because I don't want to take a 3 day vacation just yet.

Our DM is cool like that. He once directly ripped a campaign out of D&D Online and had us blindly play it. It was cool to eventually find out how he had revamped it for us without us knowing. He also did an old episode of the Twilight Zone for us. I gotta say he's mastered his poker face.

I want to add rewards in Call of Cthulhu, when someone solves a problem on their first guess, or at least accomplishes something in creative way i'll give them some sanity back.
Part to encourage them to think through the situation and part because this way I can punish them further with bigger sanity losses.

Is this a shit idea, or should I give it a try?

I like the idea, but you gotta present it in a good way. Don't just say "good job, here's some extra sanity", pitch as the player feeling so confident or relieved that they solved something without issue that it strengthens their resolve.

How do you prefer to handle divination and things of the like in your games? On the whole, what do you all think of it being a thing the PCs can readily access and use at all?

In some circumstances in merely takes the form of some bonus you get to actions without having to go into details on what may or may not happen. Then again it could potentially derail the efforts of a DM depending upon how the system in question handles divination.

For my own personal prefrence Divination should be, at best, an educated guess that is always subject to change and more or less become self fulfilling prophecies (or the PCs have to work to make it so). For instance, if it were a sci-fi setting the character in question would essentially have a super computer for a brain to allow them to do something like this (corrolate data and come up with a guess) but it would be a massive investment to do something like this at all.

What are your thoughts on this?
7 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
Divination is magic information-gathering, subject to misinformation, hostile action against the information gatherer (via counter-spells, wards, etc), information protection (such as anti-magic zones, blocking spells, etc), and counter-intelligence.

An information-gathering spell to divine the future, or find out things not discernible with the tools at hand should be cast with caution. The target might have set up countermeasures, or be casting their own divination magic to track down people trying to tail them. Wizards may also cast far-reaching curses or other hostile spells that trigger when people attempt to learn about a certain subject, perhaps trying to keep that information for themselves.

Depends on the game's paradigm. It literally works where the supernatural exists, and is just placebo where it doesn't. I let the game rules decide when that is and how the mechanics work.

But yea if something would be too much of an advantage/revealing then I just fudge around that problem. No need to tell the player you're taking back some of their advantage.
>>
>>54273565
Powers that tell the future should not be in PCs' hands at all. Like teleporting, flying, or reviving the dead, it's not conducive to good roleplaying games because it further distances players from constraints which are essential to the human experience.

My D&D group is currently involved in a long scale caravan journey between the two main areas of their current story, I want to pad out the trip a little on the way, so it does feel like a genuine trek. Maybe to last one or two full sessions.

Any ideas for brief adventures or events to take place in that situation?

So far the lead caravan has thrown a wheel, which they had to fix and get attacked by a displacer beast, figured out that one of the guards has been killing prostitutes in the towns they travel to, and watched a Griffin fly over but decided to completely ignore it.

12 day journey across grasslands into wet coastland.

>>
Mind dropping some general lore about the world/main quest? In my experience, it's usually a good idea to have what players encounter during a trip to have some small connection to the larger conflict.
>>
If you ever played a NE in Vanilla WoW you could use some the journey from Teldrassil to Ironfall as inspiration.

>Lots of deadly beasts that can kill you waiting on the side of the road
>Complete change of geography, races and architecture

Another idea could be a druid living in the swamp and he asks the party for help. Simply getting ambushed by intelligent creatures or the classic Troll Bridge that you can tweak
>>
>>54273529
The characters are seeking a missing young woman, daughter of a local lord, who's gone missing. She's a young magic user, and so far they've discovered she was last seen at this other city they're currently travelling to, surrounded by a significant amount of dark interference stopping even a powerful seer from seeing the girl clearly.

They have also drawn the significant ire of a female warrior Orc along the way, who captains a small band of 30 or so Orc rangers.

Would it work as a table top game/setting, or would you need to only make a setting similar in scope?

And would it be a requirement for the DM to describe everything in past tense like the narrator?

Whilst I'm fleshing out ideas, would you guys prefer seeing S.T.A.L.K.E.R.s being thoroughly unimpressed by Faerûn or Adventurers being mystified and confused by the belligerence of the Zone.

Red Forest.jpg
338KB, 1920x1200px
All was still in the Red Forest, the eldritch red fog which followed the dreaded blowout was rapidly flowing away through the trees. Slowly, but surely, the unnatural quietness of a post-blowout dawn began to fill with the comforting sound of gunfire and the reassuring howls of unknown monstrosities.

Cautiously moving through the forest, stumbling over tree roots and things best left unseen, came a group of four fair framed figures. Garbed in plain, rough-looking, but not poorly made, robes and wielding staffs with intricate ruins carved deep into the smooth wood of the shafts. Shambling out of the mists, they were but a minor curiosity for the denizens of the Zone.

“Brothers…why have we come to such a…horrible place?”

“To do what is are most sacred duty Sister Sylvarin. We have come to cure this place of the presence that corrupts it. Surely Sister, you can feel the foul corruption which poisons this wonderful bastion of nature.”

“But…this feels wrong. I have been in many a tainted grove before Brother Morrigan and felt how seeping evil twists our world into disgustingly unnatural forms. I do not sense evil here. I don’t sense anything at all.”

“Then surely this is a good thing Sister Sylvarin. For if one as experienced as you cannot sense the evil that pervades this place, then it must be weak and thus easily routed.”

“I hope you are right Brother, for all our sakes.”

The druids sluggishly made their way into a clearing of the bare, bleak trees. In patches dotted around the clearing, the air shimmered menacingly; but the group paid no heed. This sort of thing happens in lands such as this, a harmless symptom of a greater disease.

“Ok Brethren, here is where we will conduct the ritual t-“

“Of stopping, pansies whose brains are of shit!”
>>
>>54272938

One of the natives, dressed in the rags and scraps of armour that seemed to be the typical dress of this strange land, stood at the edge of clearing. Normally they ignored the druids and made no attempt to interact with them. Even when one crossed their path, they would walk straight through the group, as if they never existed.

“What is the matter my good man!?”

“Is of you, cyka. You of walkings into the field that is of anomalies. Most retarded.”

“I do not understand you. What is the problem.”

“You of throw bolt to direction of one that is fat, you of the see.”

“We are children of nature, child. We do not wield that which is torn viciously out of mother earth.”

“Cyka blyat. Pansies are of most brains that are shit. Most poo is of you. You is of watch, maybe enough shit in pants of you, that you is of thinkings the clear, da?”

The S.T.A.L.K.E.R took a tiny iron bolt out of his pocket and flung it into the clearing. It collided with one of the shimmering patches of air a few feet from where the group of druids were standing. Instantly glowing white hot and sent zooming past Brother Morigan’s head, a fountain of pure white fire burst forth from the ground where the bolt struck.

“Spirits preserve us! How will we get out of here?”

“Is of fine, pansie cyka. Move in line that is straight and of commings here. Do not of touchings the anomalies, or you be of crispiest critter, da?”
>>
>>54272963

Scooting carefully into a single file, the druids cautiously navigated their way out of the anomaly field towards the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Once on the other side, they carefully formed up to the side of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R, in case they accidently stood on the wrong blade of grass and blew up.

“Thank you, thank you most sincerely my good fellow. Without your guidance, we would have surely burned in eldritch fire.”

“You can of thankings me by of leaving. You pansies of make the Zone most pissed. Make many a blowout by taunting Zone. Of calling it of nasty names and of makings the empty threats. Many a group of pansies come through here every the day. Always of taken by Zone. You of leave now.”

“Thank you for your concern my good man, but we are mighty druids and have cleansed many a place of stronger taint than this. We will beat this so-called “Zone” and save you all from it’s terrible influence.”

“Cyka! Fines, be of havings your way pansie who is of pooed brains out of trousers. But if blowout of happenings and I of being attacked by of snorks during morning piss of mine, I be of most furious and of beatings what is of left of you.”

With that, the S.T.A.L.K.E.R strove back into the woods and was soon out of view. The druids stood dumbstruck for a moment whilst they watched him go, as if waiting for another sign to warn them of the foolish task ahead of them.

But the Zone does not tolerate fools lightly.

Yes. We were an evil party collecting artifacts that could make us into and evil god. We had agreed to share the power after my wizard lied and said he totally would be able to split godhood into 5 pieces, easy. after we got the last piece I teleported back to where we had stashed the others and used them alone. I become a god of betrayal and had to spend eternity trying not to get betrayed by my own evil angels.

I GMed one, years back.

One of the characters got hit with a nasty death curse and was slowly wasting away and dying. She saw a way out in becoming a liche, but lacked the appropriate knowledge on the proper rituals IC. She winds up striking a deal with the BBEG and lowers the wards on the players fortified manor and leads to what isn't quite a TPK, but the wiping out of the 3 of the 5 remaining loyal members of the group and the other two giving up adventuring because of it.

Surprisingly, despite it being very bad business IC, OOC there wasn't much animus over it. There was even one apology to Erin for not doing more to save her character.
