Military order must be impecable. Agreed, but what should a soldier do if the commander is incapable while the cause is just?

Like pic related.

Simple, the soldier should just nod and smile to everything the commander says. Then do the correct thing instead of what the commander told him to do. If questioned by the commander during said work, calmly explain this is what the commander told him to do in the first place. Make the commander feel like it was his idea all along.

Elves and Dwarves are in truth the same species, said species simply exibits considerable sexual dimorphism. Dwarves are the Males of said species, Elves are the females. Baby Dwarves are raised by their Elf mothers for the first year, who then puts them in a basket outside a Mine once they begin to develop Teeth and stubble.

The whole Dwarf/Elf animosity thing is simply the fact that one behavioral trait that is common to both of them is being Tsundare.

That's not the big secret. The big secret is that Dwarves can curl into balls and ram their enemies but they consider this ability "barbaric" and do not use it unless they're sure they can kill their foes. The elves know this and is the catalyst for their blood feud.

How do you effectively create a NPC players won't know if they should consider him an ally or a threat?
28 posts and 5 images submitted.
>>
With really good writing that's perfectly tuned to the tone of your game and the expectations of your group.

Seriously though, it's real fucking hard to do. It's a cool archetype but unless you're really sure of what you're doing the uncertainty is likely to collapse way sooner than you'd like.
>>
>>55359869
Don't know it yourself. You will roll for it when the time comes.
>>
>>55359869
Maybe by not taking ideas from the last anime you saw as something you automatically should incorporate into your game?

In all seriousness, what works in a TV show or comic or manga or even a video game what have you DOES NOT always work in a trpg simply because the basic execution of the plot is always completely different in method just due to media changes. Izuka works really well for a number of reasons that in certain cases other manga authors really don't have the skill to replicate or aren't telling the kind of story where that sort of character works.

Best guess solution?
NEVER have that type of NPC fight the PC's. For 90% of all players they will never trust that character ever again or will automatically assume them an enemy forever afterword. Chances are you've been a PC before and done that same thing in fact. Instead have them only hinder the PC's indirectly, but only in small ways before helping them out of another one relatively soon afterword.

Even that might not work; a lot of players will see through what you're trying to do and hate the character for it and in worse case you for trying it at all.

I'm currently in the process of writing up a campaign set in the Castlevania universe for my group. Here's what I have so far:

>1890's
>Dracula gets resurrected again, but is weaker this time due to the ritual being poorly executed
>Decides to hide out somewhere in Europe until he can regain his strength and start destroying humanity
> Plot at this point becomes a rough adaption of Bram Stoker's Dracula (Dracula ends up hiding out London, Van Helsing and company get involved, etc.)
>Current Belmont (we're doing an AU where the Belmonts are still around at this point) gathers a party of adventurers (ala Castlevania III) to track Dracula across Europe and kill him

Any advice? I'm still not sure what system I'll be using.

I honestly don't give a single fuck about your thread OP.

All I'm interested in is your image. I recently became aware Castlevania has an anime.

How is it OP? Is it good?
>>
>>55361088
Filthy weeb here, it's pretty damn good. Only four episodes long though.
>>
>>55361088
Not OP, but its pretty good. its only a few episodes (4 i think) but does a good job of giving an intro to what will be a full show. The animation and voice acting is good, only problem is its too short at the moment.

If you have the time I would suggest watching other DnD groups play on youtube. Critical Role is a particularly good example as all the players are voice actors. You can pick up little hints on how much detail to give, how to handle questions and explanations and a bunch of other useful tricks just by watching how an experienced group does it. Also check out DMtips on youtube, its done by Matt Coville who writes the DnD books.

Guys, I'm running LMoP, and my newbie friends are having fun, but I want to present them with a real moral conundrum, or at least challenge them a bit. They just cleared the Redbrand hideout and will probably do Cragmaw Castle next. Instead of the typical go-kill-stuff, I'd love to introduce some dark ritual and go a bit more gothic. I think the group would love it, and I want to present an uncomfortable situation.

Do you guys have any ideas? Sacrificing children, no-good-outcome sort of situations so they really have to face some serious consequences. LMoP is not very morally ambiguous unfortunately (though it's a great adventure overall!).

Is backstory really that important?

A character'ss backstory can affect what a character knows, thinks or how he acts like, but this isn't always the case. I feel like people value backstory too much but leave characterization (aka, the thing you see at the table the most) as some secondary element that may or may not change in the table depending on what the player feels like it.

I think both are important, but characterization is more important than backstory.

Nothing is more important than backstory
>>
A character is made up of a lot of different elements, and depending on the game you're playing and the group you're playing with, different ones will be more or less important.

Backstory is a very useful tool for figuring out where you start, but personally I've become less fond of very concrete and absolute backstories over the years. Outlining who the character is, what they care about and their connections to the world is all you really need. Start with that, and then allow the character to develop in play, their characterisation not particularly limited by the backstory, letting you find what feels most natural for them. At that point, you can adjust the backstory to fit, as you've left yourself enough wiggle room, adding in details and specific plot hooks for the GM to make use of. Because giving the GM more ways to connect your character to the world is one of the best things a backstory can do.
>>
>>55355573
I feel it should be more of a balance, you don't need a hyper specific backstory but some general information is nice for the GM to be able to work into the world. You should definitely have a character in mind and how they would act, this can be originally shaped by your backstory or not.
