What was the first magic system to allow summoned spirits that took a near-human form?
I know for sure it can't be the Nasuverse though they are probably most famous for it. Final Fantasy also comes to mind but their summons are a bit too mythical and abstract.

The earliest attested literature we have for summoning rituals which produce humanoids is the Homeric cycle, in which Odysseus performs a rite to summon the spirit of the prophet Tiresias.

So a few millennia before the weeaboo shit you have in mind.

Shitposting aside, the idea of summoning spirits is prehistoric and in virtually every human culture (barring ones in which religious faiths have outlawed such practices, and even then a person with less than charitable views toward Catholicism might regard the invocation of the saints as such). So you need to be a little more specific in your inquiry. What sort of "magic system" are you looking for?
>>
It's probably nearly about as old as the concept of magic in fiction, so who the fuck knows?

Gonna be playing a TTRPG for the first time in about a month from now and I am the DM.

I want to try doing voices for the NPC's, acting out their roles to better flesh them out, but I'm terrified that I'm going to be cringy as all fuck doing it.

What should I do?

Man don't even worry. Just have fun with it and your players will appreciate you more for your work.

It's all part of the experience, don't go into this thinking you're going to be judged by the your players, if you put in the effort they're going to have fun, and you're going to have fun. Voices will always add to the game, in my opinion. I've always done them and I always will.

Is there a reason why very few games use the d12?
10 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>54361108
Because most of the people who have used it weren't very good at writing systems.
>>
Because using it to replace d6, d4, and d3 though corresponding modulo is too much math for average player.
>>
Because there's very little they do better than a d10. Apart from a strict succession of dice sizes, generally a d10 gives you a similar enough range and that it's a nice easy decimal makes calculations and building mechanics around it a lot cleaner and easier.

I do love d12's. They're fun dice to roll and they look great, but they're not a dice that would really carry a system as anything other than a gimmick, chosen precisely because they aren't used very much.

Which is better /tg/? A system where you always roll over to succeed, or a system where sometimes you roll over and sometimes you roll under, which may or may not be completely different in other ways but I refuse to tell you anything else about these two unknown systems, not even the basics like what genre or how rules-heavy it is or what kind of dice you roll?
Tell me WHICH OF THE TWO SYSTEMS IS BETTER based on a single known difference.

Sirs and Squires, his Majesty is holding a festival and invites knights far and wide to test their strength of arms! Contestants must declare their name, place of origin, and at least 2 notable deeds (deeds may be infamous and/or noble, as long as said deeds benefit the kingdom). Common folk may compete in archery, craftsmanship, or the beggar's melee

earlier this week I was in the gaming store. being new to 40k I started a thousand sons army. now I know people have pointed out the psychic stage has been nerfed. that said I ended up talking with a Tau player.

I mentioned it was weird that Khorne characters, and sisters are so limited in ways to deny the witch, and that is weird since the story is full of people in the those groups being resistant/immune to warp mind fuckery.

He went on to insist that his tau army was massively wronged for no longer having a deny the witch. he compared it to not having a melee phase. He then went on to demand that I agree the Tau deserved the deny the witch and they used to have options?

I stopped talking to this guy when he started shout in loop: "I have the only army without a deny!" over and over again.

That said, what options did the the Tau have then that they don't have now?

In DnD/PF, when you're creating an NPC you know is probably going to end up fighting the PCs (or a villainous NPC who is guaranteed to fight them) do you actually bother creating full character sheets for them and doing the whole laborious level-by-level build thing?

Or do you just write out the relevant stats on a piece of paper along with their stuff and abilities and just call it a day?

Pic the opposite of related

>>
>>54359560
Depends on how important they are. The more presence said NPC has on the overall structure of the game, the more likely I am to build a full character, level by level.
>>
>>54359580
This. Main villain gets a sheet, most other npcs fall into some npc category where they just take their stats out of the MM or whatever. Also stealing premade stats for a character of their level and class works well.
>>
>>54359647

I've kind of fallen into the loop of knowing what I want out of someone who needs to be a threat to the party. Their BAB, their AC, their HP, and their saves.

Then I just make up what they had on them after the PCs win.

Does this make me a bad person

>What is ORE?

One Roll Engine, abbreviated as ORE is a fairly generic roleplaying system that has been adapted for various settings and games, the most notable adaptation has been the Reign fantasy RPG, the latest is Better Angels. ORE games usually use only d10, although the mechanic could work for other dice so long as you're careful to use appropriate-sized pools.

Main writer for the Velvet Book here

I'm in the middle of a Wild Talents game right now so I'm not in a position to post in this thread, but I'll do so tomorrow (I was gonna post a new thread in the AM, but got beaten to it). The copy paste is on a different computer than the one I'm using right now, unfortunately.

I will say that the Velvet Book playtests are going forward. One of the playtest groups in the discord is on its 4th or 5th session.

Hey /tg/ ive only really played D&D 3.5e and im looking to branch out.

What is a good system for me if I would like to GM an early 2000s, inner-city, punisher-esque, mob vs gang vs cartel vs police style game?

An all-human setting, where firearms are very prevalent. No magic, no hacking, no steampunk, all that jazz.

Bonus points for trait based, as I wanted to try one of those, rather than a class based system.

(accidentally posted this before in another thread, forgive me)

GURPS is best for modern games. Best rules, best gunplay, best sourcebooks (High-Tech, Mysteries, Cops, Horror, Action), best system.
>>
>>54359741
How good would WoD be if you dont have any of the supernatural stuff?

>>54361387
Hmmm... I hear GURPS for absolutely everything. But what books do I look to for gunplay, vehicles, and all the other cool jazz that comes with a modern crime campaign?

What about a less crunchy system? I hear GURPS is awfully crunchy, and while I THRIVE in crunch, my players get bored.

Can you guys fill me on blanks? Especially with attractions and interesting things to investigate as players. I'm running it Pathfinder since it's just free 3.5, even if it's not popular on this board. Its in a classical setting at the base of its own Olympus, essentially run by different guilds and no head of government. World has its own gods, but there's a lot of gaps. I'd appreciate any contributions. I'll post more below.

The city was built into the side of the mountain after the Goddess of Love, Moriah, stopped the rest of the Gods from greek/roman mythology fucking around with mortal affairs.

The mountain has volcanic activity that makes springs by the top, so whatever flows down the mountain towards a river. The city has 3 concentric, raised walls which lead to tiers and levels.

There are a bunch of guilds, mostly commercial (building, smithing, weaving, etc) but there is a mage's guild, knights guild, mercenary/murder hobo guild, and temple guild. A percentage of their taxes reflect how many votes they get for their government.

Government is slow and shitty, so commonly, guilds just buy out adventurers to do their shit for them, since its faster and serves themselves. I want some other interesting places in case the PCs shit on guilds or decide to become evil. I cannot think of a good prison system in this area that isn't just prison, execution or exile. The only large communities outside of the ways are farming areas and barbarians on the other side of the mountain.

I'm staying with his wife. I am going through all of his notes. It's sad. She always wanted to play with him, so I want to finish our last adventure.

Most of our content was just how the city operates. There's no real fat to it. We only had one mechanic which will be laughed at. Fusion domain of the love god. Join with an ally and have the best stats out of you both. Level 8 as a full round, you both get a standard action.

I just miss asking him stupid shit for him to shoot down, and me telling him to think crazier. He grounded me as a player and dm. I miss that guys.

So /tg/, have any of you experienced this before?

>Walk into Games Workshop
>Completely new to Warhammer tabletop stuff, but have some familiarity with the lore, know enough about each faction to get jokes etc..
>Even started reading the Horus Heresy books thanks to a friend loaning me them
>Speak with store manager, ask about getting started, point out a couple of different armies I'd like to try out, both in Warhammer Fantasy and 40k
>Get quoted for about £100 just to get started with a small army, some tools, and rulebooks (jesus christ)
>Ask about coming along to a few gaming nights to meet some people, get a feel for the community, and maybe see some of the large scale games in progress, see if it's something I want to start sinking money into
>"If you're in the store, you're taking part in the hobby, either painting and building, or else playing"
>In other words, he has absolutely no faith in his player base to actually sell his game for him
>Thank him for hiss time, make empty promises to come back, leave
>Never return

This has happened in like 5 different stores, across two cities. No attempt to introduce me directly to any of the armies I displayed even moderate interest in, no offer to set up a brief skirmish, or actually let me meet some of the locals. Instead, I'm given an entry price that'd almost pay for a second hand 3DS, and all the charisma and selling power of a fucking dead fish every single time.
7 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>54358873

Well m8 entry prices are high. No getting around that. Ultimately we spend money on what we enjoy. Funny yoy menation that handheld gaming system, cause you know what that shit's expensive too, specially with the a tual games and shit, and after a few years it's obsolete and it's time to pick up the new hotness. At least with this that doesn't happen.

If you want to meet the community go on a Friday or a Saturday. If the there is a community they will probably be there.

As for giving it a spin, it's not like the shops have every army just lying around y'know? In my experience yoy can get a practice game in, see how it runs, but if you do that your gonna be using the display models from up front, so basically the old dark heresy or new dark imperium sets.
>>
>>54359052
I still have a functional, hacked Sony PSP I use on a regular basis. Just because a handheld becomes outdated doesn't mean it loses all functionality.

I already said that in 5 different stores, each one told me I'm not welcome if I'm not playing or building and painting

and whilst not every army is ready to go, there's _plenty_ on display. Each one has had tables going unused, with units prepped for battle, literally ready for use at any time, with further models for display in the windows.

If someone wants me to invest into an entirely new hobby, they should be trying to _justify_ that price tag. I know what I can get out of a 3DS, or any other gaming platform I go to, such as Steam.
>>
>>54359181

Don't know what kinda stores you were in m8, aint like that where I am. My local owners are nice guys. When I was getting started they were happy to talk things over with me and shoot the shit, lemme watch a few games. Either people where you live are just massive cunts, or you've somehow managed to do something that makes them want to get rid of you. Since I don't know you or where you live I couldn't say which.

Also, those armies you saw may not have belonged to the shop owner. I know guys who leave their models at the shop do they don't have to risk lugging em around, and if the owner just went using other people's shit that'd be no good.

To be quite frank though this sounds like a exaggeration. Assuming you got run out of a shop at all I reckon you probably got run out of one not five. This is either b8, or you were hoping to bitch and have people agree with you. You aren't looking for a solution to your problem, you just want to whine and have somebody pat you on the back or maybe just tell us our hobby is shit. Seems to me you've already made up your mind m8. Go ahead and buy your console and play your vidya while looking down your nose at us if that's what you want. Nothing wrong with that.
