I want to run a based somewhat based on Fallen London and Sunless Sea, accentuating mariners and ports and the like. What kind of system can I use?

I guess you can use Call of Cthulu for Fallen London, dunno what to use on Sea bits though
>>
Anything with a sanity mechanic built in. CoC is the go to standard.
>>
>>54461331
It wouldn't mesh well with Call of Cthulu, but with some homebrewing you could use Savage worlds: Fifty Fathoms.
Or use the actual system they use in a RT/DH style system. The 5 base stats on a suitable dice system. I made a homebrew using these with re-rolls for certain skills in the general stat.
Players had their base Iron stat, then a number of rerolls (between 0-4) for Blades, Guns, Gunnery, and Defense.
The same applied for the others. I can find the char sheet in a bit, if your interested.

I've been watching a few of Spoony's videos lately, and I started to realise a few things about the successful "Youtube" DMs - Matt Mercer, the Nerdachy guys, Drunkens and Dragons, etc.

I wouldn't want to be a player of theirs.

I don't know what it is. They seem to be quite set in their ways, although some may have wise information or perhaps good tips; it feels as though there's too much opinion. In all honesty Nerdarchy shows the least of this - But Drunkens and Mercer can speak utter dogshit sometimes. Fuck, Drunkens comes off as far too smug for my taste. Mercer's alright as a storyteller, just not a great DM.

Then I watch Spoony, Matt Colville or the Chris Perkins Q&A's and I feel like "fuck, I wish he was my DM." They feel less bullshit, they feel like they don't cater to a basic audience (Colville does do this a tiny bit though, which I pass of because a lot of his other work is pretty spot on.) Spoony and Chris seem to run good, captivating campaigns, not to mention being livewires themselves - in a good way.

Anyone else have similar/differing realisations?

Tell me about the high-tech race(s) in your fantasy setting, /tg/. Do they use magitech, golem crafting, alchemy, steampunk, clockwork or just straight up mad SCIENCE? Are they gnomes, elves, goblins, or something else? How do they interact with the less technologically advanced cultures in the setting?
28 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
The Gnome/Dwarf analog in our group's long-running setting is a race called the Thaumi, who lived in an Art Deco, "diesel-punk" cities deep underground a century or so before we started campaigning. They tapped into the setting's leylines to power their metropolis, and were widely despised for their secretive, stand-offish natures and for several times launching pre-emptive military strikes on neighboring nations they felt were threatening them.

A century before "modern day," however, a massive leyline catastrophe occurred that affected nearly every nation in the setting in some way or other. For the Thaumi, it blew up the power stations they'd built to tap into that energy, magically irradiating their cities and forcing them up onto the surface. Now, half the survivors live in the crowded, fortified entrances to their cave system, making-do with older but still impressive technologies.

The other half, which is mostly comprised of the younger generation, has decided to go out and explore the rest of world that the pre-catastrophe Thaumi found to be so distasteful and intimidating, hoping to experience new things, oftentimes hoping to make amends and increase their people's reputation in the process. As such they often take jobs as gunslingers or sharp-shooters with caravans where their still-advanced tech can be put to use.
>>
All Elves in my setting belong to a compact called the Elvari, which is somewhat of a communist utopia. Any individual with exceptional enough talents can become part of their civilisation as well. They have no need of manual labour and have their every need and want taken care of by incredibly powerful world shaking magics.

They have golem constructs whose only job is to make their countryside as beautiful as possible. They magically conjure up all the food, drink and building materials they could possibly need. They use demiplanes to make sure they never run out of space. Their entire armies are made up of the equivalent of max level wizards, because even the smallest among them is taught magic from an early age. They are all made immortal, and there is no disease.

Unfortunately, it turns out that magic is a finite resource and to solve this problem they accidentally started pulling power from the Far Realm, and unleashed a great old one on their city. Oops.
>>
>>54461618
They interact with less advanced races by trading - mostly for raw materials and interesting knick-knacks. They pay for these with gold that they conjure out of thin air (but the lesser races don't know that). The reason they trade for odd things is that it's interesting to them, and the reason they buy raw materials is to use them as base materials for transmutation.

They also have Wardens who roam the continent and deal with monsters and problems the populace have, and seek out promising individuals to train.

For those of you who play TWW, you may take interest in this. It's a prospective army list for the Kurgan, similar to how Norsca is about to be added. Mostly made for fun.

I'd post this on /twg/ but I feel like this place is better for stuff like this, and I know Total War is at least tolerated here.

in fact, all of those depictions are found in almost the same places in different churches in england, close to medieval harbours. Its thought that the image was a prayer or effigy either as to ask for protection, or in prayer for sailors lost.

its quite an intriguing detail of medieval iconography.

For all your questions on Dark Heresy (1st and 2nd Editions), Rogue Trader, Deathwatch, Black Crusade, and Only War.
Not the wargame, not Chapter Master, not Space Hulk. Inquisitor is okay, but not many people know about it.

Not sure between starting Dark Heresy 1e and 2e? Pick 2e.

The introduction of the Imperial Throne as a single interstellar currency probably started as the coinage of the Void Born that was used in Sol that then worked it's way out along with the Expeditionary Forces of the Great Crusade.

Originally it was Req. Almost certainly derived from Requisition tokens used by the Quarter Supreme of Luna used to allocate resources during the Age of Strife. 1 Req is just a Req, 10 Req was a DecReq, 10 DecReq (100 Req) was a CetuReq. Fraction and decimal Req only existed as hypothetical inside a bank account and had no real world counter part.

Thrones are Reqs in all but name, presumably Horus had something to do with this or at least someone in his employ.

Availability, acceptability and value of local currency varies greatly in the imperium even down to the scale of nation-states but every world in the Imperium, by law, accepts the Throne and accepts it at the value dictated by the Administrtum.

The Throne (coin) and it's worth is seen to an extent as the glue that holds interstellar trade together. Fucking with the coinage is officially treason and is one of the few things that will have the Arbiters kicking down your door.

It doesn't matter if you're the head of a vast trader dynasty, a sector governor or an ambitious idiot in a back room making counterfeits. If you fuck with the thrones you fuck with the Throne and the Throne will fuck back.

Eldar typically prefer to barter goods for goods and seldom accept local currencies. Some times they will use Throne Coin if they can't find an alternative. Big exception being Sreta Ulthran's branch of the Ulthran clan.
>>
>>54216694
From the end of the last thread

You misunderstand. The planetary government's punishment for crimes involving thrones are irrelevant. The value of a Throne is based on the credibility of the Imperial government and its word. Fuck around with the Imperium's coin and you attack the Imperium's word and credibility, and even a sector governor will get run down by Arbites if they try to manipulate Imperial currency. Commit all the crimes you want with your local coin, its monopoly money in the grand scheme of things, even if it wrecks that local currency that can be kept isolated from the greater Imperial economy.

Don't fuck with the Thrones though. The Astra Militarum is paid in Thrones, and Thrones buy their voidships and lasguns, as the Mechanicus is also paid in Thrones. The Administratum does its accounting in Thrones, the Imperial Courtiers and Rogue Traders count their fortunes and investments in Thrones. Inquisitors file their expenses in Thrones. Do not fuck with the Throne, do not fuck with the Thrones.
>>
And what of the Tau? With them being the last large member to join do they use Thrones or do they maintain a closed system?
