Today marks 73 years since the 'July 20 Bomb Plot', also known as Operation Valkyrie. This was an attempt by several senior Wehrmacht officers to assassinate Hitler at his Eastern Front headquarters known as the "Wolf's Lair", near Rastenburg in East Prussia (now Kętrzyn in Poland). The plot was not the first attempt to kill Hitler, but it was the one that came the closest to success.

The men behind the July Plot were a group of high-level German military leaders who recognized that Hitler was leading Germany in a suicidal war on two fronts. They decided to assassinate him then stage a coup d’état, with the belief that a new government in Berlin would save Germany from complete destruction at the hands of the Allies.

The July Plot leaders included Colonel General Ludwig Beck, former chief of the army general staff, Colonel General Friedrich Olbricht and Major General Henning von Tresckow. Lieutenant Colonel Claus Schenk von Stauffenberg, chief of staff of the reserve army, also played a central role in the conspiracy. Stauffenberg had been badly wounded in North Africa, losing his right eye and right hand in a strafing attack. As Chief-of-Staff Army Reserve he was a familiar sight at the Wolf's Lair, with regular access to Hitler, and it was he who resolved to plant the bomb.

Stauffenberg received orders that the next staff conference was to be at 13.00 on July 20th. The start was changed to 12.30 – though the time change meant little to Stauffenberg. Having broken a capsule full of acid which would eat through a wire detonator thus activating a firing pin, Stauffenberg went into a map room with Field Marshall Keitel and placed the bomb, hidden in his briefcase, against a leg of the table that supported the war maps that Hitler was using. After this was done, Stauffenberg made his excuse (he had to take a telephone report from Berlin) and left the map room.

>What is /awg/?
A thread to talk about minis and games which fall between the cracks, or people's homebrew wargames. /hwg/ doesn't entertain fantasy (for good reason) and the other threads are locked to very specific games, so this thread isn't tied to a game, or a genre, lets talk about fun wargames.

Any scale, any genre, any company, any minis. Skirmishers welcome. Rules designers welcome.

>Examples of games that qualify
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_miniature_wargames
Grimdark Future, Age of Fantasy, Mighty Armies, Dragon Rampant, Of Gods and Mortals, Frostgrave, Hordes of the Things, Songs of Blades and Heroes, Freebooter's Fate, Dark Age, LotR and anything that doesn't necessarily have a dedicated thread (gorkamundheim).

Today was a bad and a good day.

A bad day in that my planned game of Full Thrust fell through because my opponent had to work late. A good day because my parcel of Full Thrust stuff from the GZG summer sale arrived, and now I have a whole fleet to paint.

The crystal growth-sporting, tattooed space truckers I can only imagine as looking like a mixture of Zelgadis from Slayers and Darth Maul will finally get ships. Incredibly dull ships loadout-wise but incredibly brightly-coloured ships - because they're truckers, they're more interested in making their ship look pretty than be any great innovation in war.

I've also been reading up on Dirtside to try and come up with a dieselpunk reskin of it, and statted out some "not-quite-WW2" vehicles in it. It feels a bit of a waste leaving out all the cool shit like lasers, railguns, gravtanks etc, but on the other hand it looks a system I can use the odd "weird" bit of tech in to show a properly experimental unit.

If you're doing a dieselpunk thing and and want to add more "weird" tech, I'd look to something like the Syrian civil war for examples, given how strange some of their improvised weapons are.
>>
>>54395275
My imagi-nations are a higher tech Austro Hungary analogue with effectively mid WW2 tanks, chunky mecha and the beginnings of jet plane tech versus an early WW2 Ottoman analogue with a penchant for over the top projects like super-planes, huge railway guns, Skies of Arcadia style airships and Baneblade-esque tanks.

It's all cannons and rockets mostly but the weirdness is in scale (I wanted Crimson Skies era Ace Combat with Valkyria Chronicles tanks).

The not-Turks do have camel riders with panzerfausts.

Hey fa/tg/uys,

I'm a newbie gearing up to run GURPS 4e for my group (I've been playing HERO System though, with its similar complexity). I have two months to prepare and am running in a custom far-future earth setting in which at least tech level 8-9 will be available to the players.

I'm looking for advice on which rulebooks I should read through and what I should focus on past the core rules.

Setting is sci-fi in an era well after a post-apoc scenario occurred to the previous TL11 setting. Basically shit hit the fan and someone attempted a reset button with a nanite swarm that buried most of the old-tech. Things have stabilized somewhat and societies have re-formed in a new Earth with drastically different environments and ecosystems.

I was looking at Space (for tech, players will be limited to Earth for the time being), Biotech, and Ultratech. Power armor, mecha, landships, ancient cities, genetically engineered species, etc are somewhat uncommon but available.

My plan is to release a source book to players a week or two before the game with templates and basic setting info.

Uh, congrats. Sounds like you have everything figured out. Glad to see other people are playing GURPS. Happy gaming!
>>
Any specific questions you've got, OP? It sounds like you've got a pretty solid foundation and method for prepping the campaign, after that the rest should fall into place smoothly and easily. Can't think of anything glaring you're missing, but you might want to skim through the GURPS Mega at some of the Pyramid stuff that could be fun/helpful or just neat to draw inspiration from. Even just enemy factions or something to sprinkle in.

Here's a list of the "series 3" (4th edition) Pyramid issues, and the titles of the articles each one contains. Fuller descriptions of those articles can be found in the samples of each Pyramid issue on the Warehouse 23 website, or in the issues themselves (of course).
http://forums.sjgames.com/showthread.php?t=115624

Good luck, and have fun OP.

Honestly, dude, I'd pick up a copy of Mook's book, "How to be a GURPS GM". Excellent, informative read.

As for the books you've pointed out
>Space
Has more world-building (literally, planets) and setting advice than it does useful tech-tables.

>Biotech, Ultratech
Ehhhh. Has tech-tables aplenty for TL 11 games, but they are a point of contention on their quality. Can get pretty cartoony, which may or may not be what you want. If the elements are uncommon but available, I'd pick and choose elements. Use at your own risk. Honestly, I'm torn on what to suggest other than making up a few things using the basic set.

If the tone is meant to be post-apoc gritty, with rare glimpses into the glorious, fallen empires of the past, then I'd recommend After the End the most, make up the tech. If it's meant to be a romp through the environment with cool toys, then sure, get the tech books.

I have some questions about Chaos Space Marines /tg/.

How do the Legions recruit new members? For example how do Legions such as the World Eaters and Thousand Sons recruit and train new marines?

How big are the remaining Legions? Say if all remaining members gathered together no matter how unlikely that is how large are each legions forces?

Why does there seem to be no fluff explaining the individual differences of home planets in the eye of the remaining Primarchs? Shouldnt they be a bigger deal in the warp?

For the most part with the more specialised legions they likely don't recruit new members, they were just so massive at the start that they've been running on that inertia ever since. Remembering as well that all World Eaters are Khorne Berserkers but not all Khorne Berserkers are World Eaters.
