Does anyone remember the Generic Class options from 3e Unearthed Arcana? Link: http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/classes/genericClasses.htm

Basically, gave the option for a DM to break class options down to the 3 classic archetypes of warrior, expert and spellcaster. You could take class features as "bonus feats".

I was wondering /tg/, has anyone tried to do something similar with 5e with any success? Would it be hard to do and keep it balanced? Or do you have any thoughts on how to do it?

I'm asking because I have a stubborn group that won't play anything but D&D, and I want to do a campaign that doesn't rely on 5e's default class paradigm.

>>tl;dr help me find a viable way to do a 3-class system for 5e that allows players to chose class features without being horribly horribly broken.

I like the idea of D20 modern default classes that are oriented on one of 6 attributes.

Consider this for an inspiration:

These actually look quite nice. I'll need to look them over a few times to decide for myself but definitely one possibility. Do you have any experience playing these (the 5e versions)?
>>
>>54528949
No but I'm hoping to give it a try soon. I feel like you will need to make a lot of adjustments if you want it to fit the default 5e gameplay (i.e. any pre-written adventures, pretty high-magic stuff) but on paper they look pretty good.

Official modern d20 (3.0 or 3.5, I forget) had an issue where going Dex hero was almost almost always the mechanically superior choice, unless you wanted to be a total skillmonkey. I don't think it's quite that bad in this homebrew but ymmv.

Is freedom the right of all living things?

lets suppose theres a setting where there are two factions of dieties.

gods who believe that their creation, man, is nothing more than a tool to fulfill whatever interests the gods have for them, and that free will is blasphemy, dangerous, and could if left uncheck, result in harm to the dieties who made them. And further, gods could too easily abuse the system and garner mortals underneath them and gain too much power in divine politics. But without freedom, there will always be equality.

while another believe that free will must be an inherant aspect of their existance, for if it is not, the mortals cannot accomplish and grow and live. Without growth, there cannot be ingenuity, and therefore no change or improvement, resulting in stagnation. There are also moral implications as well.

If you were a god, what would you think would be the ideal solution?

So the first faction believes in peace through tyranny then?
>>
>>54526970
If I were a god in a pantheon of gods like me, why would I need to create mortals? It's not like I'm lonely in this scenario.

Unless I'm some kind of divine NEET or something. Maybe they stuck me with some job that keeps me apart from divine society, like weaving every single snowflake that falls, or painting all the leaves and flowers.

Don't make up contrived scenarios to have a debate on freedom vs authoritarianism OP, its unsightly. /tg/ will gladly debate the topic at any time.

To answer your question: Anyone who picks authority is either a massive narcissist and assumes they'd be the authority, or deeply distrustful of other's motivations and actions and believes an outside force will solve this.
Freedom is the only choice that makes sense for everyone. Maximizing freedom contains the most benefits for everyone involved.

Look guys. What with the UltraPortaPotties getting their Primarch back, I feel we gotta find a space marine chapter in blue that we can be proud of. The only logical is of course the Rainbow Warriors.
Hear me out. These guys are one of the oldest chapters, going all the way back to Rogue Trader. They have the classic blue armor, and most importantly, they have a gayer name than "Ultramarines". So let's create a movement to force GW to make them important somehow out of pure spite.

These guys are the manliest of all the space marine chapters. These guys call themselves the Rainbow Warriors. They don't give a shit about stroking their own ego they just care about killing xenos scum. Also how terrifying would it be to see some marines charge down wearing fucking rainbows on their shoulder. Fuck their blue scheme embrace the colors. Some one in 40k has to. Why not these murder machines?
>>
Also they can literally fuck the Ultramarines
>>
Also they can literally fuck the Ultrasmurfs in the ass. We all want that to happen and these guys would be perfect for it. Their homeworld is fucking prism for emprah sake

Efficient land destruction is reserved for formats where there are lands that are game wining or format warping.

Destroying lands slows the game down, rather than advancing it towards an ending. In a game where everything is based on a gradual accumulation of resources, removing those resources is a mechanic that should not be in the game.

Or you can go with the 4chan explanation of "lol cucks of the coast is shit that's why"

"Master Builder" the unofficial lego movie universe RPG?

Each player starts by constructing their own minifigure, then we give them a few key stats, and some special quirks, or qualities... Players are encouraged to create a communally shared pile of lego pieces from which to build...

Oh, okay, dumb idea regarding the mechanics: players have a chi-pool, like, that mechanic from Legend of the Five Rings? But, instead of being Chi, it is "Studs". Players can conjure up bricks with a number of Studs equal to however many Stud they spend during their action, right? And, of course, all blocks are worth their relative number of Studs to connect together... Like, if you need a 1x4 straight, you pull out 4 studs, and boom, you pull it out of the environment, no problem.

Okay, like, Quirk / Example: Batman has "I only work in Black, or Dark Grey" which lets him draw extra studs of those colors when his action comes around. Something like that?

Does anybody else hate magic item crafting rules in like every game? Why is it only Magic Users who make magic items? That's fucking stupid.

When you need a magic sword that will split mountains, who do you go to to create it? The ancient retired warrior blacksmith, who defeated an entire band of orcs himself and forges things from moon-steel asteroids he catches with his bare hands or a fucking magic user fresh out of magic university?

When you need a cloak of black shadows that lets you hide away in darkness who do you go see? Regular wizard in a tower or do you seek the prince of thieves, deep underground in his hideaway where the souls of wrongly murdered orphans act as his spies and scouts? Everyone should be able to make magic items, relevant to their abilities.

>Fighters should forge magic armor and weapons themselves.
>Thieves make magic cloaks and grapple hooks and masks.
>Clerics create reliquaries and triple-blessed spellbooks and holy symbols.
>Magic users make magic wands, robes, hats, and broomsticks.

Why isn't this the standard? Making magic a 'scientific force that only it's users understand' instantly sucks all the fun and conceptual balance out of a setting. Fuck that, and fuck you for doing it.
83 posts and 9 images submitted.
>>
>>54523685
You fucking idiot, the magic users aren't making the items themselves. They are simply enchanting an item that already exists.

If you want the best sword in the game that can smite demons and demigods, then you go to the best blacksmith in the game and have them forge the best sword in the game.

THEN you go to the fucking wizard and have them enchant the shit out of it.
>>
>>54523685
I only know of like two games that have an actual system for crafting. Like I assume you're speaking of DnD/PF but those are hardly rules, its literally just roll over and over and over again.
>>
>>54523685
Anima. Play FUCKING Anima.
Roll a goddamned wall of meat with good Forging and one of the relevant skills to enchant shit(runes and animism are easy for literally any class, Alchemy and Occult are more wizard-ish, but still doable with a bit of investment), make your own weapon, kill supernatural creatures with it, then use their bits as ingredients in the enchanting process.

Humans who are very common and who dominate the world
Humans who live underground and like crafting and beer
Humans who live in the forest and dislike people who invade their forests and who aren't them
Humans who don't want no trouble
Humans who are primitive warlike savages but actually pretty noble and shamanistic
Humans who are half human living in forests and half human who dominates the world, and therefore feels at loss with themselves since they belong to neither
Humans who are the result of a human woman out of the humans who dominate the world getting raped by a barbaric but noble shaman human

remember that human physiology changes quickly (in terms of how long humans have been around) depending on their environment. Within a few thousand generations, we have gone from much smaller, husky, hairy creatures that are extremely strong, but don't move well over long distances, to lankier, less hairy creatures that can literally handle walking thousands of miles a year with little impact on our health. we process a wider variety of food and can handle eatting raw meats occassionally and balance that with a wide variety of vegetation, both leaf like and fruit like, and we have the jaw to support this, having a safe combination of flat grinding teeth and fairly sharp cutting teeth.
we have a skin that changes with the intensity of the sun based on where we live, in just a few generations.

our main adavtage is our brain, however. that is directly tied to advancement in culture. people who have had to deal with more than just survival for anywhere more than a few generations have larger frontal lobes than those without. we are more creative and can find solutions and adapt easier.

First, look, at your environment. Lots of sun- darker skin. Not much sun-lighter skin. Lots of sun with long periods of not much sun-moderate skin. Also, people in cold climates are hairier by nature, and also stockier with larger fat reserves. People in hot environments are lankier with more wiry muscles.
Second, create their culture and decide how advanced they are. If they can grow their food, their teeth will be flatter and made more for veggies. If, due to climate, they cannot grow food, their teeth will be sharper. This will also determine their cranial cavity size.

Finally, determine if there are any magical or scientific influences in their physiology. Setting up shop on top of a ley-line might make their bodies more frail, but capable of great feats of innate magic. nano-bots in the water might help keep your blood clean of toxins.

Homo sapiens were always lanky hairless long distance runners. Neanderthals were the stocky failures, and we raped them to death, actually polluting our superior genes with hairy midget ones

So, a couple of guys in my gaming group expressed interest in a Master of Magic campaign; does anyone know a good RPG system for it? I was sort of thinking Exalted, except that I've never actually played it, only looked at it once or twice and know it's more or less on the same power level as the old game. But its thematics don't quite fit. Does anyone have anything better to suggest?
18 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
I wouldn't use exalted since it's made for a rather specific setting and all the concepts that involves.

It really depends on what you want to play. The easiest way to do it would be to play some regular dudes (or heroes) inside the MoM world, in which case any decent non-specific fantasy system will work. If you want to play wizards each controlling an empire, as if every player was an actual player in the real MoM game, then I'd suggest to just play the game instead because it'd be a nightmare to do "right" on tabletop.
>>
>>54520479
The main idea was to play more the heroes working for empire controlling wizards than the wizards themselves, but each of those are still badasses who are capable of taking on several hundred ordinary soldiers at once, if the food calculations for armies are anything to go by. And that's relatively weak heroes at low levels. Higher power guys can and are army eaters.
