Fuck. We have no bard, and no paladin/cleric. My Warlock is an Abyssal tiefling with pact of the Fiend, but that's probably not gonna help. I guess im gonna complain to the DM about creating an encounter with CR far too high for the party.

Are there gods in your setting? Are they benevolent? If so, why do they allow conflict and suffering in their world?
68 posts and 9 images submitted.

Conflict allows opportunity for men to prove themselves and better their world. Through proving their positive traits and remaining good people throughout hardship, they will be rewarded in this life or the next.

Plus, no conflict, no free will, yadda yadda we don't want slave worshipers.

Do you think a planetary defense force could repel a xenomorph infestation? As well, just how dangerous of a threat can they reasonably face before everything starts falling apart?
211 posts and 22 images submitted.
>>
>>54547044
No, they only exist to fall and have the space marines/imperial guard/sisters of battle/whatever called in to save the planet.
>>
>>54547044
I don't think the PDF is the best group to deal with xenomorphs, nor do I think that Space Marines are particularly well equipped to deal with xenomorphs

Some sort of inquisition task force would likely be effective at wiping out the infestation, as xenomorphs tend to rely on stealth

Their natural ability to squeeze into tight spaces and hide effectively as well as their quickness (relative to baseline humans) would make them hard to combat on a large scale if only because they probably wouldn't take any sort of straight-on battle
>>
>>54547220
The strength of xenomorphs is also pretty hard to determine easily. Someone seeing a xenomorph or two throughout the hive could mean that there really are just a couple, or there could be hundreds and there's really no way of telling until they invade en masse

Xenomorphs are also shown to be very intelligent and adaptable. That means if they come across a threat to their hive/continued existence they can determine a appropriate response quickly and apply it hive-wide due to their hive mind

Honestly I think they would be better at planetary infiltration than genestealers if only because they are able to mask the extent of their infestation so easily

Anyone else believe that elves should be the absolute best at magic? I hate seeing humans being so great at being wizards when they're not even magical and so short lived.

I only notice Warhammer elves being better than humans yet for some reason humans are still just as good if they use dark magic AKA old man Nagash as prime example. While in dungeons and dragons you see humans are flat out better than elves. Pretty much most settings elves are second best. Makes no sense.

Does this annoy anyone else or am I alone on this?

For elves magic should be informed ability.

They are supposed to be great at it, but it shouldn't ever help them in any meaningful way, because elves suck.
>>
>>54546698
It's rather odd. Most settings ostensibly say that Elves are the best race at arcane magic, having the best most long lived wizards and all that jazz. Of course, then you usually end up with the fact that heroic humans have to be the best at everything, so the greatest human wizard is a hyper-savant, while the greatest elf mage is a couple steps below him despite studying for 900 years.

It's probably a combination of HFY, and the fact that the BBEG is usually a Wizard, and it'd be weird if he wasn't the strongest wizard, since somebody would stop him otherwise?

I would say that in most settings, the average elf far outpaces the average human for magical potential, due in part to their lower population size and higher affinity for basic magic.

Personally for mine, I opted to just make Elves so good at magic that they just used to to get away from all those pesky worldly concerns and form a society elsewhere.

fuck off out of here race traitor.

In D&D it was only OG to 2.5 where this was the case and it was because Elves were to busy being prancing mincing faggots to hit the books hard enough to reach the higher echelons of magic. It didn't matter they were still better than 98% of humans as only a very select few are supposed to reach that high level (the shit is not supposed to be like WoW with every tom, dick and harry at max level)

>What the hell is Ops and Tactics and why did you write this?

Ops and Tactics is/was a rework of the terribly awful modern game D20 Modern that produces enough differences in said game to be considered it's own. It's goal was to do the following things

1. Make Combat more fluid and less rigid like the D20/D&D style outright demands.
2. Make it reflect the real attributes of weapons and armor, in a more realistic sense, while being as playable as possible.
3. Make everything else suck less, at least in my opinion.
4. Introduce a more modular way to handle magic, Incantations/Invoking(My own..thing), Psionics, and equipment. There is also a lot of equipment.

>Why do you keep posting this?

Cause I keep changing things. This latest version got rid of archetypes. I'll post the changelogs for each book below.

>What kind of game is this good for?

Games with a lot of gunfights, where you want the realistic guns but you don't want the slow down. Also for people at least somewhat familiar with the D20 System.

Everyone knows the "Neo-Tolkien" races of D&D. But, if you've been around a while - or just checked 1d4chan - you'd know that there's actually an incredibly long tradition of exotic races in Dungeons & Dragons.

Now, I know it's the "hip thing" on /tg/ to hate on nonstandard races, or even anything other than humans, but I personally think that they deserve to be celebrated. After all, they're so incredibly useful if you're homebrewing a setting of your own.

So, let's have thread for talking about D&D's weirder races. Discuss whether or not aranea in AD&D were actually supposed to be able to paladins, share what races were your favorites and why, discuss which races are best for filling the "Five Fantasy Races" setup to make your own homebrew settings unique... basically, let's share the love for the forgotten ranks of the PC creatures.

At least they aren't additional flavors of elves.
>>
Personally, to my surprise, most of my favorite nonstandard races tend to come from either Mystara or 4th edition.

For example, I just find Devas - angels who gave up place amongst the gods to instead live amongst mortals, living an endless chain of lives because they gave up their immortality, but the primal spirits won't have them, to be so much more fascinating than the "super holy angel-blooded" Aasimar.

4th edition's take on Bladelings as abandoned creations of the God of War is a lot more fun to mess around with than 2e's "they're probably a stabilized strain of tiefling, or a minor fiendish race; who cares?"

Gnolls got some really awesome fluff in 4e's Dragon Magazine.

Aranea are really neat for being a magical, intelligent bug race who are neither hive-minded NOR inherently evil.

Diaboli are just a nifty idea; extraplanar refugees who look like fiends, but have the hearts of angels. You telling me you can't make something fun with that?

I find gnolls to be underused. They also have more potential than enemy race. And if you check hyenas, they got a surprising amount of folklore all over Eurasia.

My favorite part is how some hyenas can crush bones with their jaws. I always put them having a bite attack with concussion damage, 1d6 or 1d8.

How would you go about making a table top roleplay out of the kingdom death monster Setting?

The hunts, the settlement, and the character death being a big part of the game, as well as the feeling of hope as well as the feeling of hopelessness in such a cruel world all being maintained effectivly in this game.

What system would you use? How would you handle character creation and death?

I don't know much about Kingdom Death Monster, but I have been dicking around with /tg/'s latest "let's make grimdark setting" thread, so color me interested. What's this setting about?
>>
>>54543598

The setting larger than the game covers, because you start off the game essentially playing as cows.

An immortal being called the Scribe periodically writes humans into existence out in a plane of stone faces that exists in eternal darkness. These humans simple come into being as adults with no memories, with nothing but some cloth and a lantern to light their way in the darkness.

The cynical might say that the lanterns also advertise the location of these 'survivors' to nearby monsters. Of which there are many, ranging from degenerate lion-beasts that are all that remains of a once proud civilization, to screaming monster goats, to time-warping rainbow birds, to bugs cosplaying as knights, and so on.

These people usually die very quickly, but the lucky ones survive long enough to find areas of relative safety, band together, and work out something like civilization. Killing monsters and butchering them for resources and advancing, until their settlement inevitably falls into tragedy and death.

A lot of the monsters in the setting eat people, or were people once. So the scribe makes more of them as needed, and the Golden Entity occasionally sends forth its armies to harvest crops of humans.

Oh, the Golden Entity is the Scribe's boss. The Scribe isn't even a major player, really. That's how low on the ladder we are. Our all-powerful creator being is middle management in hell.
>>
>>54543799
Hmm. In a setting like that, I'd want to make it clear that death can come easy, while at the same time not going completely out of my way to kill them. Character creation would go fast, you get your stats out, and since humans are just "made", we don't worry about backstory stuff other than some basic personality traits. Have it so there's downtime in the settlement to let characters form relationships and connections, so they want to survive and don't consider each person they player as cannon fodder. Have there actually be signs of hope and something to strive for, just make it very difficult to accomplish and have plenty of things get in the way to hamper spirits.

What separates the civilized from the savage /tg/? What makes a barbarian a barbarian /tg/?

I'm not asking about the mechanics of the barbarian class. I want to know what makes a barbarian FEEL like a barbarian instead of some other martial class.

I see two things that define barbarians regardless of world: lack of armor and rage-fueled powers. But that doesn't seem to be everything because an angry monk can fit that same description. What do you think?

Also, Barbarian General I guess.

Maybe having tactics that are made available literally by pure strength and speed. Like realistically being able to accurately and powerfully hurl a table at somebody, or being about to really on his ability to just straight catch arrows. Tremendous speed and strength, is my two cents.

There are quite a few articles and rants on the web explaining why Dungeons & Dragons sucks. So, let's take that statement at a face value — D&D gargles balls, plain and simple.

That said, most of the arguments I've seen focus too much on the details. They talk about alignment, about how classes are set up, about the amount of rules to handle or the number of books you need to buy. Some even point out the player mentality which, granted, is greatly damaged by the play style the system encourages, but I've never really seen anyone cutting the issue to the bone and getting to the core. Here's my attempt to lay out the four main reasons I don't use D&D:

>1. Power level.
It would make a lot of sense for a system define a certain power level and stick to it throughout the game. In D&D it’s impossible, because if you want to improve your character in any way, you get a damn package of abilities with every level. The guard dogs you feared in the beginning of the game will be helpless pups after a couple of “adventures”.
202 posts and 13 images submitted.
>>
>>54540700
>2. Restrictiveness.
Rather than make the character you want, you have to mix and match options to get the closest idea you were striving for. If you want to be a proficient brawler, you have to take a level in a certain class (monk). The character progression is pre-set — why did my back-street brawler suddenly become immune to all diseases (monk class ability)? And why can my witchdoctor take animal forms now (druid class ability)? You can pay an instructor to take riding lessons, but then you can't increase the Riding skill until you gain a level (which can take months in-game, or more, if you’re higher level). You cannot make up your own spells. Many character concepts are banned at starting levels (this is especially true with magic-users). And no, you cannot be a good singer because you chose the Fighter class.

>3. Mystery killing.
How many times have you seen, or thought yourself: “The guy touched my sword. The blade rusted and crumbled to pieces. This must be the Rusting Grasp spell (obvious, right?), which means that we’re dealing with at least 7th level druid. His Wisdom must be at least 14 to cast that spell, so, his Will save bonus is +7 or greater. He also has a good Fort save, so we better use some spell against him that requires Reflex, which is probably his worst. We gotta keep him away from the bushes too, as he’s got no movement penalties there and he can Entangle us if we follow. He also leaves no tracks behind. Druids also have animal companions, so we better be ready for surprise, and if he starts to lose, he’s got an ability to turn into eagle and fly away. Better watch out for that one, as we need information for him.”
>>
>>54540708
Okay, I must state I don’t do this on purpose, but this kind of information just comes to me during the play. In essence, one tiny detail tells me VAST knowledge about the character we’re dealing with. No mystery at all — I know pretty well of what the character is capable of. And if GM modifies things that it isn’t as I think, this is to possibly cause scorned reaction from players: “Hey, why didn’t you tell you allowed such class? I would have really liked to play such a character,” etc.

>4. Logic holes/silliness.
Weapons have damage caps. Roll 1d4 point of damage for hit using a hand crossbow. WTF!? Any crossbow should be a dangerous weapon, and this four damage doesn’t even account for a scratch on most non-starting characters.

Okay, while never mentioned in the books, I can understand that Hit Points are meant to represent also stamina and dodging, not just taking wounds. However, this makes an arrow just as easy to avoid as a punch. Although using this representations is better than having barbarians running around with a dozen of arrows in their chest, it’s still silly. But hey, that’s what D&D is — silly. A friend of mine explained me once how he can make a character who dishes out 1d6+4 damage with a random twig picked up from the forest (don’t remember the mechanics, sorry, but it didn’t require exceptional Strength). It is also amusing that a single shuriken can CONSTANTLY make just as much damage as an average "longsword" (1 damage + 1 point blank shot + 2 weapon specialization = 4 automatic damage). Have fun combining it with the Flurry of Blows and you get a character whose biggest problem is that he cannot physically carry enough shurikens… They just run out before the combat ends.
>>
>>54540723
Also, have you ever-ever seen any PC take cover in D&D against a single archer? Their defence trait vs. bullets/arrows is the same as in melée, so it would be stupid to take cover, as there’s no additional danger in charging ahead to hack the archer down. (Some firearms-based settings have upped the base damage of ranged weaponry to address this issue, but it’s not evident in D&D.)

This chapter also covers the impact of a the d20 roll has on a skill/ability checks. In case of the latter, your characters capabilities make up a miniscule part in the final result. Yes, this means that people with no training can outshine professionals time-to-time, and that arms wrestling contests between Strength 8 and 18 characters are mainly resolved with luck.

And as someone has very wisely said — though the skill ranks certainly help to succeed in tasks, they have more to do with qualifying for a prestige class.

There are more and more detailed issues on it, but they tend to fall into the four categories presented above.

"if you can write a character with an interesting personality, everything else that is needlessly tacked onto it in a special-snowflake esque way will fade into the background after a few hours of play."

that's why you should consider allowing well-written personalities and well-meaning players rather than to throw all out because a racial template, a flashy background or overdesign ticks you off.
i'll be back to GMing, then.

define at what point "snowflakishness" starts for you, because all the complaints i see on /tg/ simply dont add up with my current group.
does it begin with "my character is race x just because"? because that never seemed to be a problem and, as i said, the matter of the character's race was fact yet was never forced into focus. or does /tg/ obsess over something like design efficiency?

If you aren't just being inflammatory, you should lurk more until you realize that just about everyone here doesn't actually play RPGs or interact with actual human beings consistently. All they know is memes and there's no arguments to be had with them.

I'm currently dming my irl group (5e) to let our regular dm moves houses and play for once. Got 4 sessions under my belt.
This one will be continuing in the style of my last session, which deviates from the standard both the players and i normally have been in. I give them a Plot Twist token each, improvved everything while asking players to fill in certain details. No rails to run on as far as the eye can see.
Got a text from a player asking if he could bring a friend, i say yeah, tell me about him.

I've asked the player (who plays an edgy tiefling warlock assassin in the main campaign) to pass along that "the same page tool" questionnaire, but already feel out of my depth.

Anyone have some tips?

Well, that settles that.
