GM story thread: 'My players are why I drink' edition
Either post greentexts or just bitch about specific things your players do.
I'll start: subtly adding dice/modifiers to every fucking roll and thinking I don't notice
I literally talked you through character gen, do you honestly think I can't tell?

Well I'll write something in a minute but thought it is good to note that in my party all four of us take turns DMing and as such we keep trying to fuck with the person DMing at the time because they had dicked us over previously and it has gotten to the point where our sessions are just us trying to ruin games.

Magocracy is the perfect form of government. I was originally going to say "name one better form of government", and then realized there flat-out isn't one.

Virtually all powerful spellcasters, and ALL of the MOST powerful spellcasters, have at least one extremely high mental stat, and with such a coming-together of the wisest, smartest, and most charismatic people, shit is going to get done and it's going to get done effectively. Handing over the reins of state to the spellcasters isn't just smart, it's the ultimate expression of meritocracy, the one true way to acknowledge that might really does make right and yet put that realization to work productively.

Why does your monarch rule? Because his father was king before him?

Why does your president rule? Because a mob of idiots were convinced she was better for their immediate selfish interests than her opponents?

I reject those answers. My wizardly brethren rule because they are geniuses (and if not they won't gain enough status to matter), who can solve problems through arcane might. Who cares about whether or not healthcare is free when the rain is enchanted to cure diseases? Does military spending really matter when the Archevoker and his apprentices can nuke enemy countries with an afternoon ritual?

>b-but muh sense of right or wrong...

Who's more likely to have the Wisdom to avert disaster, the seniormost Cleric around or the king's dumbfuck chief advisor who was appointed because of his relatives and because he won a battle once?

Find a flaw, or try to. There isn't one.

Hey /tg/
So, I'm building an African-inspired setting for my writing/homebrew setting & I was wondering if anyone had any tips on how to navigate the memetic shitshow that is race in fiction these days. Seems like any fantasy depiction of black society ends up being either WE WUZ tier or straight out of /pol/. I'd like some outside advice on how to avoid being a hack.
In a nutshell the setting is based on west africa/nigeria. It's a collection of city states in a confederacy league. Culturally people are divided into highlanders, plainsdwellers, and the coastal people. They're neighbored by an obnoxious expansionist theocratic kingdom to the south and a plutocratic pseudo-carthage state to the north/east. They're often at war with the south and many serve as mercenaries to the north.

Plot for my campaign centers around the party sneaking a woman and her baby son from her shitbag husband in not-carthage back to her homeland if that matters.

tl;dr - any tips for writing an african-style setting? Pitfalls to avoid? Recommended reading?

The broad strokes will serve your players fine unless any have a distinct interest in exploring west african myths.

Thanks m8. I have to admit the attention to detail is also motivated in part by my dm autism and my desire to write fiction in this setting one day. I really feel like it has potential.
Have you or anyone else run a campaign in not-european fantasyland before? Ever had players get...weird? In regards to the race thing? Maybe it's 4chan getting to me but I'm afraid of someone spouting mein kampf shit all over my table.

My setting has the European-inspired part of the world eat every Incan crop EXCEPT potatoes. But since no one knows about stuff like arracacha or ulluco or kaniwa unless they're botanists, no one would know to complain and would instead think they were just fantasy-sounding names I came up with.

Trying to design a world map/regional map. Any tips on how to make it not look goofy? I'm going for a couple of different biomes all on the same map.
83 posts and 20 images submitted.
>>
You could always do the lazy thing and just draw a bunch of blobs and some mountain ranges separating different biomes.

If not, then I usually start with plate tectonics, determine the general hight map (that is, separate the world into "mountainous", "Hilly", "flat", and "below the water table"), then decide which way the world turns. Wind blows the opposite direction (inerta), and if it comes off an ocean, it'll be wet. Depending on how much water the area gets, that'll give you how lush the area is. Should be easy to figure out where to put your biomes then.
>>
>>54592311
>>54592456

Or you could go the even lazier thing and use a world map from the distant past or the possible distant future.

I use Civ 5s map editor and load up a random continents map and then edit from there.

Alright, we've seen the Tau powers of bullshitium allow them to BTFO hive worlds, WAAAGHs, splinter fleets, and even a couple of imperial crusades. How do the blueberries fare if they had to go up against actual major threats, like:

>the indominus crusade
>the blood crusade that attacked Octarius
>the main thrust of Abbadons 13th black crusade that rekt cadia
>WAAAGH Ghazghkull
>the Cryptus tendril
>Mortsrions plague forces that attacked Ultramar
>Magnus' forces
>the mecharius crusade

Could they beat any of those, or would they get rekt?

Depends on the year they get attacked. Tau have the advantage of actually progressing, expanding, strengthening.
Before they even got those pulse rifles working vs after rail rifles are standard troop issue is a big difference.

>>the blood crusade that attacked Octarius

That followed along the rift which is near the Tau now. So it is possible they were attacked since it was sort of hinting at in the 8th book. We'll see in the codex

I think that they'll make great antagonists for Solar PCs who set up their own little empire in the Dreaming Sea. With 2000 Dragonblooded, they'll be no pushover, and unlike the main body of the Realm, there's no building civil war to distract them from waging a war against an Anathema kingdom.

I'm using the BJ-2 in a game this weekend. It's probably going to be set in the late 3050s.

Anyone have some custom variants for it that would be appropriate for the era?

I toyed with the idea of using FF armour but I'm not sure what alternate weapon loadouts would be optimal. Dual LLs and SSRMs seem pretty solid.

Quick question to get us started - what is your favorite "Arcane Archer"-esque character in 4e (or a 4e-like, such as Strike!)?

My favorite take on it is honestly the Bard. It manages to keep a bardic flavor while still being an arcane archer, which are quite rare in 4e.
