Let's get a fantasy gun thread going.

What are some famous guns from fantasy works? The only ones that spring to mind are the guns of Arthur Eld/the Sandalwood guns/Roland's guns from the Dark Tower series. Could fantasy use more fancy magic guns in it in general?

>Could fantasy use more fancy magic guns in it in general?
yes and no.
guns are mostly impersonal. they mostly arose after mass production. so individual guns on their own didn't have the same artisanal reverence. it was a tool as devoid of character as a hammer. this combined with the relatively low level of minimum skill to use one effectively compared to a bow, or sling.

the cowboy's 6-gun wasn't forged by master-smiths, it was made and assembled by Colt Manufacturing in Hartford Connecticut by a bunch of guys in a shop.

a Masamune blade was made by the man himself.
The Argo was a ship made by the man Argus Son of Arestor.
but your Brown Bess was made by a faceless nameless gunsmith.

part of making a THING fantastic is where it came from. where most guns come from is "the assembly line"
so we need to find famous characters that used guns and see about stealing THEIR traits and stories...cause fantasy guns is a thing I could wish for...

also if you want a setting with cool guns you might try Wild Cards
https://1d4chan.org/wiki/Wild_Cards
as-is I've wanted to use the idea of a "set" of weapons like that sometime just because it seems interesting...

you might also look for the "firsts"

I'm honestly surprised that there aren't more fancy magic guns in American-made fantasy. The image of the gun is kind of ingrained in the idea of American exceptionalism and the frontiersman spirit. The gun is a will to power. It's the tool that sets a man apart from his neighbors and gives him the freedom to traverse and conquer unconquered lands. On the homestead, away from civilization and the laws therein, the only law is what the homesteader decides and the law's enforcer is the homesteader's gun.

Don't let them touch power tools. Also keep their breeding in check. You'll go to sleep with five and wake up with an omelette factory. Oh, and they don't like being electrocuted. Those little squeeky noises aren't meant to be encouraging apparently.
>>
>>54680100
Apparently there is this legend among the mortals of kobolds in service of a dragon whose been referred to as "Tucker" by said mortals.

Apparently, they are so effective their tribe could contend with adventurers many times their strength. I would imagine you would want to aim somewhere around there, effective and independent enough to be able to effectively defend your lair with only minimum supervision, yet not so much so that they would get the not-so-bright idea of turning against you.
>>
>>54680100
Make sure they are the ones that like to make traps and are very good at sneaking around this will make a huge difference in the long term and make them viable for defending your layer against all types of intruders. Self sufficiency is very desirable as well. Make sure to select the initial stock for intelligence and loyalty.

There was a guy here on /tg/ trying to recruit players for an Exalted game, where everyone would play mortal characters. Not in a 'session zero' kinda way, but they were going to stay as mortals, unless the GM decided they were worthy of Exaltation. He explicitly said it wouldn't be an even thing, but that the party might end up with this guy being a Lunar, this guy being a Solar, and everyone else being mortals.

For those that don't know Exalted, this is like having a D&D campaign where everyone plays level 0 commoners, until and unless the DM lets you start taking levels in Bard or Paladin. And he was proud of himself, too. He was going to show off the true darkness and danger of the setting, and show all those spoiled Exalted players what's what.

I’m looking for help with this fan-made FAQ/Erratta and was wondering if you anons would be able to provide comments and criticism.
The goal of this FAQ is to do two things-
1. Reduce the power level of the strongest types of lists to level the playing field and decrease the power level gap between a casual and a competitive list from a purely list-building perspective. The health of a community is going to be strongly dependent on not having internal fractures in the community, and the casual/comp divide is the one that is currently rearing its face in X-wing. One only needs to look at 7th edition 40k for an example of just how bad this can get for a community.
2. Reduce the amount of Negative Play Experiences (NPE), Single-player interactions, or un-fun factors in the game.
I focused mostly on nerfs, but the few buffs are the ones that I have heard the most complaining about, or are iconic ships that are not currently viable to use without effectively handicapping yourself.
Proposed balance changes-
Nerfs-
- Biggs now reads “When another friendly ship at range 1 of you is defending, it may roll an additional defense die.”
Biggs needs to go for 2 reasons. Firstly, the current Four-Ship-Rebel/Fair-ship-rebel/Rebel-Hug/Stage-4-Rebels builds are massively OP (see MajorJuggler). Then, Biggs takes away player agency- He forces you to shoot him. Now you shoot biggs because it is a good idea, not because the card says you have to.
- Sabine now reads “Your upgrade bar gains the bomb upgrade icon. Once per round at the end of the activation phase before a friendly bomb token is removed, you may choose 1 enemy ship at Range 1 of that token. That ship suffers 1 damage.”
This is mostly to keep consistency with wording, and make it so that her bombs only work with other AoE bombs to stop some really stupid shit. It also resolves Sabine’s current confusion with missed effects.

Con't below, sorry for the spam.
>>
>>54667879
- Advanced Slam now reads “After performing a SLAM action, if you did not overlap an obstacle or another ship, you may perform an action listed on your action bar as a free action”

SLAM Bombs need to go away- it’s a purely single-player experience at that point, and it pushes any traditional ace and even some non-traditional aces entirely out of the meta. There are other similar suggestions involving having SLAM assigning the WD token before the SLAM and having dropping bombs be considered an attack, but that’s a lot of cards to change in significant ways to be able to use Lando after you SLAM.

- Twin Laser Turret now reads “ATTACK (Target Lock): Perform this attack twice (even against a ship outside your firing arc). Each time this attack hits, the defender suffers 1 damage. Then cancel all dice results.”

TLT is by far the strongest turret in the game, standing head and shoulders above the rest. It’s also not exactly fun to play against. This is a well deserved nerf.

- Guidance Chips now reads “Once per round, when attacking with a Torpedo or Missile secondary weapon, you may change 1 die result to a focus result”

First-turn-engage alpha-strikes are not healthy for a game of any kind, and they aren’t fun to be on the receiving end of. This change would make it so that you would need to have a focus when you fire your ordinance, meaning that you would have to target lock a turn in advance, allowing for more counterplay. It also brings up LRS to more common levels of usage.

Alright you sons of bitches, I'm bored and drunk so we're gonna roll up a wasteland. Not just any wasteland, a post apocalyptic wasteland. We're gonna be using these two tables that I made to create Mad Max/Fallout style wacky wasteland factions.

https://pastebin.com/hffPWPRc
https://pastebin.com/nQczsrCU

We're gonna roll up the wasteland itself first, then a TBD number of major factions to exist in that wasteland. If none of the factions are sufficiently normal, something highly likely, we will work under the impression that there's some unfortunate normal-ish survivors who live around them.

So, to get us started, would someone be so kind as to provide me with a d100 for what the tech level of the world was pre-apocalypse?

Epic is an old specialist game from GW that was discontinued a few years ago, since then the community has taken over. Recently there have been rumors of FW releasing new Adeptus Titanicus rules soonish, and depending on if it succeeds(which likely it will) they plan to expand into classic Epic.

>Where do I get the rules?
http://www.tp.net-armageddon.org/
It's based off of the Epic Armageddon rule set, otherwise known as Epic 4th Ed, with some minor changes and new army lists. You can also find 30k rules here.
>Where do I get those fan made minis that show up everywhere?
You post your email in Epic threads and hope that one of the recasters contact you, or post on Tactical Command (http://www.tacticalwargames.net/taccmd/index.php) and hope you can find someone after you build up trust there.
>Where else can I get miniatures?
There is a lot of old epic stuff on Ebay and some manufacturers produce good proxies, like http://vanguardminiatures.co.uk/. Tacticalwargames.net, and other forums or facebook groups also do lots of trading in second hand epic minis.
>What's the game like?
Players alternate using parts of their armies called formations rather than moving and fighting with their entire force. Morale and fatigue is represented by giving “Blast Markers” to a formation when something bad happens to it, which gradually makes it less effective and stops more and more units in the formation from acting until they rally. The scale makes units with longer range weapons or high movement speed stand out more, makes maneuvering more important and allows for the use of many units that are super heavy or above in Warhammer 40 000, such as Baneblades, fliers, knights or titans without warping the game too much. The new 30k stuff is also great, and they are rapidly developing more rules for the legions as the actual FW Redbooks release.

I want to know how many others share my opinion.

I firmly believe planeswalker card type was a mistake. I hate it with a passion, to such an extent that after printing of Jace, the Mind Sculptor, I exclusively play storm in all formats, just so I wouldn't have to ever play planeswalkers myself.

Besides the fact, that the story of Magic got over-centered over neo-walkers for years and years, they occupy mythic slots (a problem for another discussion), and by now are simply required to be able to play almost any non-combo deck in practically all formats with sole exception of Vintage, where you'll want Jace if you're playing blue tempo and sometimes Dack too.

Otherwise? Modern/Legacy decks simply require planeswalkers, unless you're playing storm or some other combo, even then we have shit like Nahiri into emrakul too.

If you'd put the same effects neowalkers have on enchantments with counters/once per turn clause, a lot of them would be viewed as OP before planeswalker type was a thing.

Honestly, I wish they'd done them like they did Jaya Balard.

Funny thing, most people appear to love them even after all these years.

tl;dr
Fuck planeswalkers, should've never been made.

>>54662754
Delver, Burn, Infect, Elves, Merfolk, Affinity, Bogles, Abzan CoCo/Little Kid Luck all don't require planeswalkers and not all of them are combo so I don't know what you're smoking.

But the stories have been terrible. I blame shitty writers and the associated lack of budget.

Nice bait tho. 7/10 made me reply
>>
I'd like Planeswalkers better if they were weirder as cards. Maybe the benefits aren't apparent at first or you have to make it work rather than just have an "I win!" Button.
>>
>>54662853
Not a bait.

Tribal decks have been out of metas for quite awhile. Burn uses the new chandra.

Elves is a combo deck, Infect is dead outside of Legacy and there's people who call it "combo", but yes - Infect would count.

There are delver lists that run lilys, but it isn't a must, so okay.

Affinity/infect/delver/bogles - quite a lot of decks eh?

But what I've meant is things like "Black? Must get lilys. Blue? get jaces" kind of things, or that planeswalkers are simply better as a finisher in control decks than actual creatures, as well as the fact that they warp standard very often.

Are Rhinos bad in 8th? I see a lot of lists either using exclusively Razorbacks, or opting just to footslog most of their troops.

Is it because of the points increase, because infantry armor got better? Both?
148 posts and 17 images submitted.
>>
Razorbacks are not that much pricier, and have a gun. Rhinos no longer have fire points, and why are you running large units of Marines anyway?
>>
>>54659801
>Disclaimer: IG-exclusive player who only faces space marines
It depends on the army. Rhinos are pretty good for Melee marines and berserkers because they shield the units inside from the turn one shooting and turn two overwatch. Razorbacks are also pretty damn awesome as they fulfill tank duty while shuffling the squads to objectives.

Melee hordes don't need the transports because they all have some sort of deep strike (nids), teleport (orks), or super-run/run-and-shoot (imperial guard) ability. Plus, trukks and chimeras can't reliably hit a barn's broadside while moving and cost a fortune.

Taurox prime is pretty good for meltamen just because they can charge forward then shoot turn 2 after the offload.

Eldar units can ignore the BS and are thus quite decent at most things.
>>
>>54659801
Rhinos are pretty useful and incredibly obnoxious to use as melee units against enemy vehicles that don't have fly. Just keep charging them and they have to keep falling back but never get to shoot. Bumper cars syndrome is one of the problems of 8th ed when you run a lot of tanks or transports.

Migrating from previous thread!

Requesting someone to draw my modern elf character in a stealthy sneaking pose, to fit her role in the party.

Her name is Chanthrol, and she is a 20-year-old elf with a toned, yet curvaceous body that is covered in scars. Her left eye is covered with an eyepatch, as you can see. If you can think of some cool design for the eyepatch while you doodle her, it would be greatly appreciated!

She would be wearing some dark, skintight clothing or armour for sneaking around, and you can leave some skin visible if you'd like. Her weapons are left up to you, but she prefers to use melee weapons, or her fists for most encounters. She would probably carry a gun of some sorts as well, but that is completely optional.
