Why hasn't a go-to Scifi tabletop game arisen in the same manner that D&D is the go-to fantasy tabletop game?
>>54806406
because everyone who wants to play fantasy says "I want to play Tolkien but with X" which DnD is fine for.
Scifi players might want anything from "Star wars but with X" to "Cyberpunk but with X" to "Martian Colonists but with X" to "Star Trek but with X" to "The Matri but with X" and no one system or setting can accommodate that.
>>54806406
Because nobody really ripped off the big sci-fi franchises like countless hack authors did with Lord of the Rings, so no "generic sci-fi" ever appeared. When there's no generic sci-fi, how can be a go-to system for it?
Like, what are the most popular sci-fi franchises? Star Wars and Star Trek. Those are the big two,
>But muh Asimov novels...
Fuck off, nobody ever read them. So, we have Star Trek.
Star Trek will have very little combat and a lot of exploration, technobabble and social interaction. You don't really need a system for that, by the way. A freeform RPG works completely fine.
With Star Wars, systems for playing it actually exist, but the Force is so central to it, that it usually defines how the system works to a large degree. Adapting the system to a setting without the Force is possible, but hard and pointless - there are a few people who tried to do Mass Effect conversions, with little success.
What are the more popular sci-fi RPG's anyway? I would just guess Shadowrun and the 40k ones, but I'm sure I'm forgetting something. I feel like Traveller and GURPS are probably the most used for "generic" sci-fi, but both are fairly unpopular
How about a game of Mornington Crescent?
For hopefully obvious reasons today we'll be playing with the 1867 Sailsbury amendments, sans eratta; as a reminder, this will entail a two-turn penalty upon reaching Picadilly and Cockfosters as well as the post-errata locations.
I'll start: Camden Town.
Branfoster Square
Hounslow West
>>54806287
You must be thinking of the 1687 Indian amendments. That would be a masterstoke with them in play, but alas, their high skill requirements means they see so little use in casual play...
Whatever the case, you'll be forced in the Knid from Acton Town if you're not careful. As an impartial observer, might I recommend you attempt the Hammersmith Rush?
How would you as a GM make a game as horrible as possible without causing your players to leave? lets see what hellish games we can come up with

Will y'all help me with a backstory for this character please?
My GM didn't want me to play Human Fighter, preferring that I do some special snowflake shit like his other players, so I am making a bard based purely on pic related. For the special snowflake race I figured I would make it a set of animated armor with a soul bound to it. I figure the mannequin-esque guise of this guy will allow me to play him as a mute bard, communicating through body language, Message cantrip, and instrumental motions, for an interesting take on a class I've never played. This should add to the creep factor, since I am supposed to be an Evil character for this campaign. Other than that, I don't know how this character got to where he was and I am drawing a blank.... Any ideas?
>>54805879
OP here, and I wanted to say that the above character development is just sleep-deprived brainstorming, so if y'all have completely different ideas of what this character could be, then please share. I am definitely out of my comfort zone with bards.
Thanks in advance!
>>54805879
I don't know how much actually role-playing you guys do, but I'd be worried about my ability to participate in such things with this character. I had a character who could only talk in a hoarse whisper, and that alone was a challenge. I mean, I like the idea of communicating via gestures and body language, but since you, the player, aren't likely to be an expert in that, I think you're gonna find your options are pretty limited. I suspect you'll end up falling back on "my character gestures that X", which is okay for less immersive games, I suppose, but probably wouldn't fly in most of the ones I've been in, where we tend to talk in character.
>>54805879
I don't know where you found the pic but I posted it in a character art thread a few days ago ! And it's a great picture.
I could recommend playing something along the lines of a warfoged, but different. Warforged were created to make war (obviously) but maybe some wizards thought it would be a great way to have efficient servants that do not need to sleep, eat, drink or breathe and are virtually immortal. This one was created to be an artist and the magic infused in him allowed him to inspire the people around him and make the wizards' receptions joyful and lively.
But the construct, like all warforged, had a conscience of its own and took offense in being used virutally as a living instrument by his master and creator. He didn't have any means to destroy him however so he decided to tackle the problem his way.
Every day and every night the wizard would ask for music, enchenated by the instrumental
prowess of his creation. But, every day and every night, the music became each and every time a litlle sadder. The warforged instilled all his music with pure melancholy, so subtly and gradually the wizard never noticed and fell into a state of depression and apathy so intense that, after years of influence on your part, he ended his life, setting you free.
Those have usually a big level adjustement though, you might want to talk about it with your GM.
Can I bring my yugioh cards here fellas? Want to know if they're worth anything.

If you want in, you'll have to duel me.

Good luck
If a fantasy setting had an industrialized global war (think WWI or WWII) what kind of campaigns could you run in it? What sort of stories would you see?
Gunna say magic might take a back seat considering they have the whole gun thing, wizards would probably still be fucking important in logistical roles and support roles.I dunno, just a thought.
>>54806348
Depends on what magic can do in universe. If a wizard can cast fire magic and some sort of magic should he's basically a walking artillery piece with its own personal active defense. Would be a real nightmare in trench warfare.
>teleports across no man's land
>turns your trench into a river of flame
>>54806582
Still they would be in the sidelines. The main thing about industrialized warfare are mass produced destructive weapons.

Let's talk about Starfinder and the old Pathfinder classes. Where in Starfinder would you expect to find npcs and people who still use some of the old PF classes? How crazy would it be if Baba Yaga or Nex just popped up right in the middle of Absolam Station and started going high-end magical shenanigans

Anyway, I think that I'd find them on some weird outback world that hasn't developed yet and is still in its medieval period. Wizards are shit and so either they're VERY easily killable with piss-poor initiative scores while also being able to destroy a lot of stuff or they're just very weak.
>>54804361
I saw that you apped with a template but it looks like it was nerfed? Your stats wouldn't make sense otherwise. (Also I felt like a shitter apping when someone else already did a vampire template, so I didn't.)

Like they can't play at a table because magic players are using them all?
dear /tg/ I was thinking for some time now that I don't really know any RPG that doesn't use Dice, Cards, or any actual RNG based mechanic, but I'm sure that there is surely one in this huge market, does somebody know any? It's ok if you have to roll to determine something like the number of item a merchant have, but it's not if you have to roll to fight or do any other basic interaction.
Then I just thought, what about doing one as a side project for fun? So I just started asking questions to myself while also giving an answer

Amber Diceless
Haven't looked into it personally but it exists.

>Are dice and RNG necessary for fun in a tabletop/RPG?
I guess they are done to make every situation different from one another, if you put static stats the outcome would be the same! That's the main reasoning behind it.
>but what about using a resource system with ambient/action modifiers? like:
Let's say that one of the stats is strenght, you need it to calculate melee damage and most importantly to see if you can lift objects.
Let's say that you have 10 Str (If that's a lot or not, it's not important, the system doesn't even exist yet) with 10, you can use a War hammer, it gives you 2 more str damage when you swing it, but it decreases your dexterity stat by -2 while you use it, so it will be harder to hit with it, but if you do, you will wreck your opponent. Let's consider as a modifier that the opponent is armored, or it is a skeleton, so the war hammer will give more or less damage based on the type of enemy, as a further modifier, we can say that you are a war hammer master, or you are fightning against 1 enemy while one PC is helping you, the possibility to make every match different are endless.
>But this way more experienced players will know beforehand the results/and or they will have an advantage.
Well, I guess that happens in every game already, so nothing would change.
>What about decree of failure or success, if you want to hit the opponent in a vital spot, how do you know if you are going succeed or not?
I'm still thinking about this, but let's say that in a normal situation is really difficult that you are going to instantly kill your opponent if the skill is equal, also I guess that a system based on cycling resources would add the certain bonuses required for a character for it to being able to strike the powerful blow and kill the opponent.
>Why do we need something like this in the first place?
Because RNG can be a bitch and completely nonsensical sometimes
>Isn't this going to make games more complicated, slowing them down?
Continue
>>54804342
>Isn't this going to make games more complicated, slowing them down?
Maybe, but I'm thinking of various ways to make it really easy to calculate and make the action generally smoother without sacrificing the main goal.
It would be something like this:
>Stat
>Item mod.
>Situational mod. (The scenario and situation where the scene takes place)
>Action mod.
>Enemy mod.
>Confront results, higher wins, so you succeed with action X, if the difference is higher, you have more degrees of success, if not you fail.
Simple question about D&D and other similar RPG's, when you roll a dice to dodge something and you are a light, cunning, roguish kind of guy, how do modifiers work? you roll the normal dice, and then like adds +5 because you have 5 dexterity or something like that? How do modifiers in general, work?
Uh... Kind of. Though you tend not to roll to dodge, the person trying to hit you rolls to see if they roll equal to or over your armor class number, which would be high if you are good at dodging.
This might be the first time I've seen someone on /tg/ that didn't know DnD.
>>54803712
Why are you asking a question about D&D that's answered in the first few pages of the PHB in every edition? I haven't seen an OP this stupid since 2014.
>>54804048
This guy could be interested in gaming. I'm not gonna call him an idiot for trying to learn.
Though yeah, get the books. There's a PDF share thread going. Ask for the DnD 5e players handbook.
