Lets assume your village has a Druid in it. He is third level and is a jolly guy, assuming Lawful Good. How would he change the way people live in the village, what spells would he use, what scrolls would he own ?

In our Pathfinder game, my character was a druid and lived outside a village.

>taught villagers the importance of crop rotation
>acted as a vet for their animals
>occasionally acted as doctor for their people
>taught them to only go after larger deer to help the Dee population while still feeding themselves
>advised them on places not to go in the forest

Does eugenics have a serious point in a fantasy setting where your celestial/draconic/elemental/faerie/fiendish/whatever ancestry gives you superpowers and sorcery?

Nobles and royals should be basing their marriages based on these magical bloodlines and breeding super soldiers based on them.

Depends on - you guessed it - the setting.
>>
>>55398767
Elves already used their extremely long lives to gain enough political influence to take over basically everything. They have no interest in breeding super soldiers from a human base, but do experiment.

Pointedly yes.

In any sane setting where breeding can give you superpower, especially when the setting is medieval or fantastic in nature, then there will be eugenics in place.

Though it won't necessarily be called like that. Nobles of pure blood will marry with other nobles of pure blood as a matter of course.

Numenera 2 kickstarter announced. It says that it's more an expansion than a second edition, so the rules will be mostly the same. What do you think of this? You think they will fix the setting?

What are the odds there will be a full subsystem devoted to dickeating in the new addition? I can't see Monte not putting his favorite pastime in.
>>
>>55397636
Honestly? I don't see the point. The game doesn't need expansion in rules or new edition. It needs more GM/Player handbooks to explain people how to run this without turning into THE most generic fantasy RPG, wasting the entire potential of the setting in the process.

Two groups of colonies, say French Martian colonies vs British ones on Mars, begin fighting against each other. What does the conflict look like? What if it involves the colonies throughout the Solar System? No planet is unified under a single flag.

well, depending on if we can get laser weaponry working, it would be a lot of really intense...nothing. something that gets hit by a laser will heat up at the spot hit, but there aren't visible laser beams unless its smoky or dusty.
if they are still using propellant-based projectile weapons, it wont look much different.
there wont be mechs, too expensive and too unweildy to work well unless we make signifigant advancements first, and its cheaper to make wheels or tracks anyways. there will be a lot of white, tank like vehicles. bubble cities that will be automatic targets, basically it will look very similar to earth based warfare.
the only places that will be different are something like titan or venus, and even those places are unlikely due to the hostile environments.
>>
>>55397516
What a conflict looks like depends entirely on the technology and resources the belligerents have available to them and what the goals are (which will be based on the reason for the conflict).

You haven't specified any of this critical information.
>>

Oh, did you see Aldenoah too?

Are you willing to kill your player's characters in combat?

If so, do they sperg out and throw a fit if they die?

I recently pitted my players against an enemy that was far too powerful for them, and in order to prevent any bitching if they got killed, I flat out told them that if they stay and fight, they might die, something I don't normally do. They fought anyways, and our magic user almost died. He managed to just barely make his roll to survive and instead simply got his eye shot out. He was pissed as hell, though to his credit he didn't go crazy. I wonder how he would have reacted had he actually died.

Do you have any stories of character death in your games?
47 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
>>55396701
Completely depends. Are you running a Heroic Fantasy style game?

Then, I think character death should be a possibility but extremely unlikely. The DM should try to balance encounters as much as possible.

Playing a gritty, higher-fidelity setting? Death is absolutely on the table.

I sort of run a mix. I do not go out of my way to send players adversaries they wouldn't be able to handle. I do have a world with incredibly dangerous stuff in it. The players can seek out the dangerous stuff and the consequences associated with them.

I think the important distinction is that the game is group storytelling and if you rob your players of some autonomy it cheapens the experience.

So, if I'm a player and a Wizard shows up and starts whooping my ass I might not really enjoy the experience. But if the players hear about some horrible Wizard living in the Black Tower and deign to run off and fight that Wizard, well that's their choice.

If you play DnD, one of the most underutilized skills is "Insight". I have players roll it frequently. The check can be pretty easy too. "You notice this warrior moves with an experience far beyond your own. You suddenly feel a rush of doubt cross your mind that you have any hope of defeating this foe."

There's nothing wrong with dropping hints. If you didn't convey how scary this creature is, it is sometimes necessary (and definitely okay) to tell your players what's up.
>>
>>55396842
I hadn't considered using insight in that way. I think that makes the skill incredibly useful if you're the type of GM that doesn't keep everything balanced to your party all the time.
>>
>>55396842
Con't

So, in that sense, I think you probably did it well. People generally don't like to run away. It doesn't feel "heroic". Especially if the DM stuck them in a sort of zero-sum scenario where the only way out IS to run away.

So my suggestion to you, DM to DM, is to give them a way to temporarily "win". Whether that be temporarily disable or banish the creature, or perhaps it's manipulating the environment to buy them some time.

Throw an NPC in there to die. Someone the PCs trust. He gives his life to buy them time, "I know the cost I am about to pay. Now run you fools so that this effort matters". This is a nice out because players will HATE the enemy more.

Another fun way to show that the bad guy they are facing is a baller? Have the bad guy kill off something the players struggled to kill as though it's nothing. Players struggled to down an Owlbear? The players encounter the black night battling the Owlbear by himself, gutting the creature in a deft, sweeping motion.

And now, a story of how I fundamentally failed as a DM:
>DM for a typical adventuring party that wants a "living world"
>Players encounter the bloody trail of a terrible Bruxa, well above their level
>Players insist on fighting the creature despite its attempts to talk
>Bruxa immediately starts fucking them up
>Killing is not always the outcome, Bruxa stops to talk and offer the PCs a Faustian Bargain
>Players say "fuck you" and keep fighting.
Here's where I fuck up
>Deus ex machina the Bruxa to stop short of killing them. Instead leaving them a demand and branding them with a curse, promising to return later.

Honestly? I should have killed my characters. I gave them many obvious warnings (the Bruxa was found tearing a horse to pieces) By not killing my characters I cheapened their choice.

Crits already kind of suck. They aren't exciting as they rarely come up and you aren't even guaranteed to do more than average damage, as you can roll for shit. I wouldn't make them worse by requiring confirmation. Personally, I'd prefer to have them always do max damage plus one additional weapon die on top of that.

Also, I use exhaustion more. If you get up from death, fall off a cliff and live, or anything of the sort, you normally just dust yourself off and continue going all out. Just add a point of exhaustion when that shit happens.

So I want to run a game where the players sometimes fight big things. Ever seen the movie "Trollhunter", where there are creatures ranging between human size and the size of an apartment building? Something like that. And I'd like it to be handled better than "The giant just has tons of HP and hits hard." As in there being some sort of system based around fighting something many times bigger than you where that size difference matters.

>>
>>55392845
On the off chance you havnt made this thread before, Ill give you my spiel on fighting big stuff.

Basically, in any system you can divide the fight into two parts: the trick and the kick. The trick is a series of actions taken to distract or disable the monster so that the other party members can deliver the kick: a blow to its vital areas. That sort of a format works in nearly all systems, but it requires creative players and leg work from the GM.

Less an attempt to be clever, more of a common association. What do you do when it's dark? You turn on a light. It'd be like splashing water on a creature made of fire.

Hey /tg/, a buddy of mine and I have started working on a homebrew system to emulate the magic and world of Negima!
My question to those who might be interested in this kind of deal is this: what kind of features and mechanics would you like to see in a system like this?
I want to implement a fate-point-like mechanic, that allows players to manipulate events in their favor, which get replenished when the player roleplays the character's "guiding virtue" (see pactio cards) exceptionally well.
At its heart, I want it to be something with a fairly in-depth system, but one that supports and encourages role-play.
Thoughts? Suggestions?

I will for the most part be ignoring a lot of the material introduced in UQ Holder since the entire structure of how magic worked seemed to get thrown out the window there.

I'm still trying to decide what the dice system and stats should be. For stats I'm thinking something along the lines of a 3x3, like WoD, divided between Body, Mind, and Spirit, one each of Power, Finesse, and Resilience. If I do that, though, I don't want to wholesale steal the dice system from WoD as well. Maybe have each stat from 1 to 10, with the dice rolled dependent on the stat.
I'm honestly just thinking this up as I type it. It helps me think, I suppose.
So for stats: (Strength, Deftness, Toughness)(Intellect, Reasoning, Focus)(Personality, Creativity, Willpower). Do these sound alright?

First one - evil mage:
Killed and mutilated people for fun.
Made statues out of princesses.
Lied like there is no tomorrow.
Killed around 100k elves with one spell.

Second - demon:
Gathered and leaded an anarcho-terrorist group
More or less declared war against the whole world
Knowingly lead people into fights where they had no chance to survive or win
Trashed a city block in a metropolis during a fight (with inhabitants included of course)
Made a young women to willingly continue his work after his "death" with a good possibility of doing it for all eternity
