What is your preferred method of playing a Fallout campaign?

I've heard good things about Exodus, and since it was supposed to be the official tabletop version of Fallout I thought it would be best, but was disappointed to find out it doesn't use the S.P.E.C.I.A.L. system.

I also found the Fallout PNP system, which seems to lift everything straight from Fallout 1 & 2. Along with the fact that it's a homebrew, it seems like it might be a bit clunky to run.

Have you ran any Fallout campaigns, and if so, what was your preferred system and why?

I guess people just assumed they got fucked by one of the heretical chapters if they even thought about it. The Dark Angels' homeworld was far away from the imperial core and information doesn't exactly travel quickly.

Why do people play games like MTG and Warhammer 40k? They are WAY too expensive for what they are, and you can play a game that's just as good or better for a small fraction of the cost.

MTG: As a game, it's basically dead. But as an investment, it keeps growing and growing. MTG is essentially a form of cryptocurrency at this point.

W40k: When was the last time you saw anyone playing that game? It's dead, end of story.

MTG is a slow-paced, expensive, paper TCG. It's a relic of the 1990s, and there's no reason to play it over a game that's much faster paced (Yugioh, Vanguard, Dragonball), an online TCG that isn't an ancient piece of trash like MTGO (Pokemon Online, Hearthstone), or a cheaper alternative (LCGs). MTG offers nothing of value to players, and at this point is only good as an investment a la crypto.

And why play W40k over an MMO like WoW, a MOBA like League, or a much cheaper alternative like Settlers of Catan? Again, no good reason to play W40k.

All teleportation magic, all portals, all instantaneous transportation spells and technology that don't cross the intervening space rely on the Void, the place between places, the space between the layers of reality.

There are gigantic rifts, huge empty valleys scattered across the land, with remnants of roads leading into them and dotted with monoliths and the remains of an ancient civilization surrounding them. The truth is that each of the major cities of this civilization had large-scale permanent teleportation circles that allowed them to spread far and wide. Unfortunately, overuse of these circles over the centuries caused them all to go haywire at the same time, plunging all these major cities into the Void.

That's why sometimes, when you deliberately travel into the Void, you can find islands of stable matter with ancient ruins on them. Sometimes these islands are empty, but other times they're inhabited by horrible monstrosities with impossible anatomies, that have been driven mad by extended exposure to the Void's strange aether and hunger for flesh and hate the living.

I was going over some of my old core books and I had a thought. I have seen more than my share of "That Guy" stories about how the GM railroaded the party and frustrated everyone for it, and I'm sure in some of those cases the problem was 100% the GM's fault. But looking over the Pathfinder, Edge of the Empire, and Black Crusade core books, I wonder if the very systems of some of these games has an impact on how much railroading happens.

For example, For EotE, I look over my notes for any given adventure arc and what I find is the adventure itself is little more than a series of bullet-points of objectives with a listed Obligation reduction for if all are completed, some descriptions of locations, and a consolidated NPC list for commonly encountered adversaries and NPC's so I'm not flipping through 2-3 books to find everything.

Then I look at the kind of notes I have made for Pathfinder, Jesus-H-Christ! every encounter and the difficulty of each encounter has to be tracked so as to award the correct experience and their expected level at any given point along the adventure must be accounted for in order to award the right amount of cash. Not to mention that NPC stats are complicated enough that they really need to be generated ahead of time or you could be wasting a good 10-30 minutes making one up.

What I'm getting at is one of these games can easily become an open-world character-driven arc while the other almost HAS to be narrative-driven simply because tracking money and experience would become an insurmountable task if PC choices weren't restricted somewhat.

That's at least MY observation, that some games lend themselves more to a sandbox game and others almost have to be on rails to some degree.

Does /tg/ agree? or am I missing something?

Several things. First off, a line between sandbox on one end and railroading on the other sets up an opposition between them that is not indicated, as they refer to fundamentally different things; the former about the lack of meaningful choice on the part of the players, and the latter on the emergence of the plot from player impetus as opposed to external impetus.

Secondly, it should not take all THAT long to prep monsters or NPCs in a DnD 3.5 ish thing (I've never played PF, but 3.5 isn't that different.) These don't need to be masterpieces of design,; generally, NPCs only have one or two narrative roles, right the players, give information to the players, buy or sell something, etc. You only need to pre-gen the stats that are directly impacting for that role. If the players do something unexpected, like attack one of the info guys, just shortly eyeball it; chances arem ,ost of them won't be that tough so you can quickly narrate the players killgi nit, or doing a diplo roll against the monster, or whatever.

In any event, the amount of prep time involved has little to do with how much freedom of travel you give your players, which itself is not directly related to railroading or sandboxing.

It does. What you describe is essentially homebrew, because nowhere does the game tell you or even suggest to do things this way.

I got cursed in a game of pathfinder that I'm playing with friends, at level 3. Playing a low Int character already I was reduced to 1 int. The DM has decided that I can no longer control my character, and is "Playing" him for me. I asked if at this point he could just be considered dead, and let me reroll, to which he said no as he can still be fix'd. That was 2 sessions ago. Ever since then I've just sat there doing nothing, unable to play at all, while the Dm has my character act utterly different from what they were Lawful Neutral to just straight Chaotic Stupid. At what point do I just say fuck it and find another game?

You are taking long to get out of that game. Losing control of your character is already shitty enough, being unable to play him for two whole sessions is just too much.
Tell him you want to reroll, to find a cure already, or leave. Heck, even roleplaying your retarded character instead of the DM would be funnier and it's more than possible, it just looks as if he doesn't want you playing.
Also, how the fuck does your character drop from, IDK maybe 10 int to 1 at level 3? That's not a curse, that's overkill.
