>players are doing a non-combat action - they are investigating to find the identity of someone
>I handle the rolls, since play-by-blog is the most convenient solution for us
>I roll failure for the investigation
How exactly do I fail an investigation? I can think of two things.
>(Your Roll)Your investigation failed - you found nothing.
or
>(No mention of any rolling taking place)You found that the person is John Smith, he lives at X and is currently expected to be at Y.
The last one is actually completely wrong and will lead the players to the wrong dude who has nothing to do with it. Also, I don't mention the failed roll since it will give the ruse away.
Which one should I do?
The ruleset is Vampire The Masquerade (simplified edition)
>>54748171
go with the second but slightly hint that they are not sure.
>>54748171
Depends on context. If there's reason to involve another character (i.e. some evidence at the scene or a connection to the real perp) then go for it. Having a red herring can help keep the action moving, whereas a simple "you didn't find anything" might stall things out. But remember to have it eventually connect back to what they were SUPPOSED to find. And my policy is I don't mention results of rolls at all if I don't have to
>>54748171
Generally speaking, you shouldn't roll unless they can fail, and it seems like you don't think they can fail in this scenario. Personally, I'd treat it as they didn't find much before [incredibly pressing matter] comes up.
Some guys at work wanna play D&D but I've never played 5e, only 3.5
I really wanna make something similar to a hexblade (so like warrior mage hybrid with curse spells) but I'm not sure if that's possible in 5e, maybe with the hybrid classes? Would someone be able to confirm whether or not it's possible and things to be aware of coming from 3.5 to 5 in general? Thanks
I have to be ready by Thursday, ideally have everythign ready earlier
WotC has been realeasing Unearthed arcana as playtest rules, ask your DM if you can use the Hexblade Warlock that they released
i'd recomend getting pact of the blade to combine with it, more out of fluf than anything else, but personally im still very on the fence about how the "bladelock" works compared to other martials
pd: 2 or 3 fighter levels might be good with that too
>>54747948
Adding on to this, it should have a finished version in the new guide to everything coming up in November, so you won't have to put up with playtest material for long.
In the meantime, there's a few other gishy options depending on what balance of cadty, fighty, and armor you want, with eldritch knight fighter, any paladin, and valor bard standing out in the PHB.

Thanks bud, this is quite useful, wasn't aware of this.
Gonna send him an e-mail and see what he thinks. He did say he wants to avoid homebrew stuff but this is technically official, just not in the books yet
Worst case scenario I'll just multi-class fighter and sourcerer, especially since it's just a small try-out campaign that may or may not carry on depending on how it goes.
>The dungeon treasure is a mixtape of pretty cool beats.
>I record a tape IRL and give them as a prop, of course
What kind of story can I make about the tape In- Game? how did it became legendary and buried in a forgotten temple//snake nest?
the tape, if played in reverse and with some techno-jiggery, can summon their god

What do you consider sick beats?
Tell me /tg/ What makes a good DM and why?
knowing how to joke with the players but not get distracted
>>54747221
Read theory, put theory into practice, make note of what works and what doesn't for your table, repeat
That's basically all you need to do to become a better DM
Also make sure to inject your fetishes into the game at every available opportunity
Just be considerate of your players.
Concept: a game in which players randomly select from a stack of a few dozen pregenned characters, who are cloned on a large space station filled with all sorts of hostile things. I think there's an anime with a similar concept, but I've never seen it.
Players can add characters, but they just go in the pool with the caveat that they can't be played by the player who built them (to avoid suicide minmaxing). The character pool is drawn from without replacement, so duplicates are possible and should be interesting for roleplay purposes.
The station itself is an alien reality show, and every few sessions makes one "season." Depending on the timing within the season and state of the humans, ie GM discretion, rewards can be more survival or cooperation based (radios, food, etc) or more combative (weapons).
Early challenges involve basic survival, learning how to meet up after respawning, and acquiring gear. Eventually the players should meet a group of aliens who've been going through the same shit, but I'll plan that out when we get there.
On a scale from faggotry to super-double-secret faggotry, how gay is this idea?
It's basically just Paranoia with aliens. Nothing wrong with that.
The only annoying part would be keeping track of which character knows what, but you could avoid that by adding a "memories from dead PCs are implanted into their replacements" plot device. Maybe you could justify that by saying that aliens don't like watching a lot of repetitive introductions and explanations.

Is there going to bealien vore?
Rate my fantasy world guys. Political map is in development.
Its good for a continent the size of NA
>>54744856
The world is approximatly the size of NA
>>54744809
The right continent looks like the side view of the head of a kobold.
The world needs good heroes, this much we know. When monsters threaten the people, when things meant to be sealed away are released, when powerful artifacts fall into the wrong hands who but a hero, a great adventurer, can stand and right wrongs, be just in times of injustice, be the light when all is dark? What is the hero's life? To roam from place to place in search of pay or adventure, leaving ever larger piles of bodies in his wake, risking death and worse fates all the while? Needed, yes, but never home. His work is never over, his battle never ends and so often his tale ends tragically. Is that a life you'd subject someone to? Is that a life a good man would choose for himself?
The world needs good heroes, but I ask you, why would a good man ever become one?
Free booze and pussy.

This duty has been given to me by a god - and with it, the power to help the helpless, to cleanse the disease and corruption, to fight the unholy and to bring rest to the dead. I am not about to question a god's decisions, or whine about roads I could have taken.
If I was not worthy of this power, he would not have chosen me. If I could not bear this burden, he would not have chosen me. And if I was not ready to die for the glory of god, he would not have chosen me.
God has given me power to do great things, and not to follow his will would be not only irresponsible, but evil. If I have the potential to do good, then I have the moral obligation to do as much as I possibly can.
Not choice. Obligation.
Some men become heroes by chance- they begin their story simply by being in the right place at the right time, and this chance encounter is the spark that shall light their flame, for once the flame of heroism is lit, it often grows without end, and the hero shall find themselves part of something bigger, unable to stop.
Some men have heroism thrust upon them- they were in the wrong place at the wrong time, and are thrown into something beyond them- they must fight, they must succeed, or they will die without ever understanding why.
Some men seek out heroism- these men cannot bear the life of an ordinary man- they crave danger, they lust for fame and glory, and in their pursuit of this goal they shall search out places were they can stand where others fall, to immortalise themselves through their deeds.
Was there a new starter set for the Hobbit Strategy Battle Game coming out? I think I heard something about it on here but can't find it
I was going to get escape from goblin town but wouldn't mind knowing if there was a new one coming before I comitted
>>54744534
>I was going to get scape from goblin town
Why? Only good thing in the box is the terrain, and do you really want to pay $125 for a poop bucket?
>>54745620
I can't find any other starter sets
>>54744534
Nope, only Goblin town. Forgeworld does Hobbit minis now after GW dropped the ball.
How would you make a Napoleonic Wars game?
>>54744067
Something like The Duelist or having the PCs in situations like those that happen in War&Peace. Stay out of big battles and use the war and armies as a backdrop or events you have to move around.
Roll 1d4. 1 means "Winter comes!", total wipe out.
Continue rolling until you get a 1.
>>54744067
Use a system like Sharpe Practice or some other actual Napoleonic wargame as a basis and add RPG elements. Assuming you want an RPG?
Because if you want a legitimate Napoelonic wars game where you command an army, there are a bunch of them. I recommend looking at Black Powder, Shako and Blucher.
I once ran a Napoleonic one shot using Traveller and the antique firearms. Used PDF related and the combat mechanics from Traveller (mongoose 1st ed)
Hey, good folks of /tg/!

What system would be good for running a modern-era Hitman-esque game?
Personally I'd use GURPS, with Action 1, 2 and 3 (this would cover most character creation templates you could need for ease of starting play, as well as the basic structure and streamlining to help create a good action game format and keep things moving/simplified during play), High-Tech, possibly a smattering from Martial Arts, and then a bunch of random Pyramid articles for fun locations, adventures, factions etc. for easy sources of targets and their organizations. I might even use the Lair of the Fat Man adventure with a tiny bit of retooling to make it match the character type/genre/premise a little more closely.
Other options I could recommend include:
Spycraft 2.0 (if you're a D20 fan, this is a good one from the makers of Fantasycraft which actually came later; pretty cinematic)
Ops & Tactics (a functional, well-supported D20 homebrew from here on /tg/; still pretty cinematic, but more down-to-earth than Spycraft)
Fate (if you enjoy more narrative stuff, don't mind 'author stance' type play)
Over The Edge/WaRP (if you want something a bit strange but light, somewhat narrative but less 'meta' mechanics than found in Fate and a few more traditional mechanics to form the skeleton)
Savage Worlds (if you don't mind pulp flavoring, and are happy playing something a little "game-y")
Reflavored Shadowrun (if you're a joyless masochist)
HeroQuest 2 (if you want a flexible, more purely narrative game that nonetheless sinks into the background and doesn't bring up meta mechanics much)
Phoenix Command (if you like tables)
>>54742807
Is there a dump with all the PDFs?
>>54742831
Of the GURPS ones? Yes. Mega link is in the GURPSgen OP (it's a PDF with a bunch of links).
Of the others? Yes, but those I can't easily grab for you. Though I know they're all out there, as that's how I've managed to read them.
Whatever you go with, happy gaming.
At what level is too much anime for a character to have at your table?
>>54742436
Depends on how angry about anime the anon replying to you is.
>>54742436
What makes a character anime?
>>54742436
Never.
I'm running a game with a mermaid/selkie/monster bard who sings in the True Speech, and is so beautiful it stuns other creatures. Then I've got a Shadow Demon from another dimension- who is of course a handsome bishie prince, and turns into a huge abomination when he wants to.
Then finally, I've got an elf warmage who has a hundred weapons and spent centuries fighting in a single eternal battle.
It's a lot of fun.
What's the "best" D&D podcast or webseries? I got kicked out of my first D&D group just over a week ago. The only reason being that I'm not enough of a normie. Anyway while I'm looking for a new group (and some friends) to play with I just wanted to keep myself occupied and satisfied with a podcast or webseries I can watch or listen to.
Also what do you guys think is the best way to find a D&D group where you all want the same experience so shit doesn't go south?
>>54739614
>The only reason being that I'm not enough of a normie.
What did you do, creep on the female player?
>>54739635
I sent pic related in the group chat as a joke.
The DM (who was the person I was closest with in the group) and I had a rough week of creative disagreeances and some trivial arguments. After that happened and I sent pic related as a joke he threw in the towel, got my kicked out and ended the friendship completely.

Now that a brave new world it's going to arrive real soon, which are some of your personal touches on your cyberpunk/dystopian setting?
>>54737400
>Sapient programs running around doing whatever they feel like.
>European civil war between Muslims and natives
>Ring of Death around Earth after global war destroys most of the 800+ satellites we have in orbit and turns then into shred-o-matics against anything that gets launched into LEO
The last star is death. All that is left is our losing fight against entropy, a fight you can only lose unless you find a way to break the laws of thermodynamics. The endless night has arrived. We only have our some of the reserves we have accumulated for trillions of years, yet it is not enough and we lost some of them along the way. Heat Death is coming.
>>54737400
Brave New World already exists. It's a supers game. I have a hardcover copy sitting a meter away.
As for your question, personally, I like the idea that the world is now basically terraformed to humanity's specifications, so food is no issue, but the world still has problems despite hunger, thirst, and sanitation being eliminated, because people are tired of bread and circuses. A world that's apparently healthy but is the equivalent of a philosophical zombie. Earth is dead, but we live on in a fake utopia carved out of its corpse, a meaningful life still evading most of the population.
The other idea I liked is lifespan as currency. With the power of immortality and a world where food is no object, what else is there to bargain with?
Is it /ourgame/ ?
Maybe, got a pdf link senpai?

No, it isn't. Very cool idea though, possibly even hot, that's up for debate though.
