Let's talk about skills in RPGs. I think skills are interesting in concept but I can't help but think that they are virtually any afterthought in most RPGs. They feel included because designers assume that no system is complete without them.

What are systems that do skills right to you? What are some RPGs that you think would be better off without skills? How do you make skills interesting in your games?
6 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
I think making a game built around the skills would make skills a tad more useful. I'm trying to make a game like that, though it's slow going.

But what games have skills that you feel are done as an afterthought?
>>
Easier to list games in which they don't feel like an afterthought. I think the trouble for me is that most RPGs can have a bunch of skills but the combat section out is almost always longer and more complex by a wide margin.

Two notable RPGs that I think have good skill systems are Basic Role Playing and unironically GURPS.

You know the drill, give me the most generic titles for a fantasy series you can think of.

Let's try to find out the most commonly used words, and phrases.

Can someone explain this to me?

both of these cards came from a sealed fat pack, but they look slightly diffirent.
I doubt this is just me, but several of my cards, across all of the cards in the sealed pack, seemed to have a diffirent hue to them, and I can understand why,

Is this normal? I already tore a cheap green card I had to compare it to another which looked more uniform but was the same name, and sure enough trademark blue glue and glowed through light.

Why are some of my cards like this?

Shit printing.
>>
>>54807241
It's a common printing error. The printers were running low on ink. Not worth any more than normal cards, unless you find a super dedicated collector, which is unlikely.
>>
WotC has had some pretty shitty print quality the past few years. Wait until you open one of the no-black-ink ones or the ink-too-dark ones.

>"It's my first time GM'ing"

Why would you do this, surely you should have at least one GM'ing session before even entertaining the idea of adding your own stuff to a system.

I respect boldness.

Doubly so for a GM. Most people are lazy fag players who bitch about not having a GM.
>>
>>54805702
There is a difference between boldness and stupidity. We've had a thread recently, where a new DM who had no idea about anything about 5e had to be explained, again and again, that he shouldn't let players use anything from dandwiki, and just didn't seem to understand what we are saying.

90s cyberpunk is so predictive that anything that is part of the 00s zeitgeist has probably been done already
>neuromancer had VR, electric cars, deep learning/ AI (personality constructs, the Aleph)

there's very little we've done in the 00s/2010s that hadn't already been done in cyberpunk

So with the players now finishing up their characters, I can now begin on plot and adjacent articles of interest. Gods and spirit courts might be a think, especially since we've got Gastanon as paladin, Frollanon on cleric, and KB-6 on 'ancestral lion spirits' Druid.

But how important are the gods usually, in your settings? I don't want to come down too heavy with divine miracles all over the place, or too soft and have them wonder Where's My Sigmar At.

Tell me of your gods/spirits and how much meddling is too much.

Here's some of what I've written/borrowed so far:

Dragon-Worship: The world is full of spirits, beasts, monsters, and men, yet only in the Dragon is there the perfect balance of spiritual/magical and physical prowess. All forms of life, all spirits, are on a quest for perfection which leads to being reincarnated as a Dragon.
-prominent in the north and east.

Spirit Courts: Uncountable as the grains of sand, and as unique as them. The living emerge from their number, and the dead return to them. There is no afterlife, only an endless circle of possession. Above all of this are the Courts, named by the Elements. Appease them, and you will prosper, for a time.
-prominent in the fringes.

Our Lady of the Hallowed Dawn: Man was once as gods, but the spirits of the world grew jealous. They dragged us from the Heavens and made us forget our radiant past. The Dragons are, or were, our wardens. But Our Lady and her knights slew the Lord of Dragons, casting them to the farthest reaches, and banished the Outer Darkness. In time, the dawn will come, and the Heavens will open to those who are faithful. The rest.... will be left to the horrors they feigned to consort with.
-prominent in the central kingdoms, Gastanon and Frollanon are participants.

We had hit a rut role play wise.
Our forever dm stated he had something new.
He wouldn't tell us what.

We made character without a rule book.
Peculiar named stats.

We were people if tge forrest.
Rich culture that functioned as a unit rather than individuals.
For example if a none violent crime was committed everyone told the criminal gow much they had failed him and presented him with a gift.
The tribe had failed him.
1st ep we were young and introduced into adult society

2nd the forrest was invaded by scouts and our mentor perished.

3rd the people of the plains were caught as the culprits

4th There was a conflict with the people of the plains.
Trial of gods took place rather than war.
The trial was set by people of mountains and river. If we lost the trial we would lose our great tree.

We cared about that dam tree.

Half way through the trail.
The sky split
A mountain raining fire decended.

It had the imperial insignia.

Our people decimated.
Captured and recruited
...
We work for an inquisitor now.
It was dark heresy
We rp from a feral world.
Wow

the players don't know exactly where the dungeon is; and they have to search for it across an old battlefield.

They will be haunted by wights, looters, etc.

How do I make the search for the dungeon fun and also a challenge on itself?

Bonus points if it doesn't require me to draw a 20x20 squares map and giving them some cliché directions (go north in the tall tree, go west in the hanging corpse)

Looking for stories of players who's idea of "helping" ended up making things worse.

be it casting fireball into a melee, or channeling negative energy to kill zombies, or blowing up the building everyone was in to try to kill the BBEG. just tales where the player made more problems in their attempt to solve a problem.

One player did animate a dead PC as a skeleton so he could walk to the priest to be resurrected, except in doing so "destroyed" his body thus requiring us to spend twice as much money to resurrect him. Oh and I supposed there was that time the wizard cast a sudden-maximized fireball against 2 mohrgs the barbarian was fighting and due to blowback rules ended up burning him for 54 damage. He made his death from massive damage save by 1 point (rolled a 3 and had +13). And the guy in an apocalypse world game who decided that the party's brainer (psychic) was the one betraying them so he opened fire into him and due to some weird rolls ended up getting outright killed before he could really fight back, died and left the party without any clairaudience-type shit to keep an eye on the enemy warlord the brainer had supposedly been "betraying" them to (he hadn't, there was a mole in their base who had access to radio and it was blindingly obvious because they gave the lost newcomer they rescued from the wasteland a job as their new radio operator with zero supervision).

I was very badly hurt in a superhero LARP. I was picked up by a bush ambulance and they were racing me to a hospital and then TORCH, the in game Avengers, came to 'rescue me' me thinking they were bad guys as my guts are falling out. They almost killed me to death!

My party is pretty good at avoiding stupid mistakes. However one time we were fighting an umberhulk and I was upfront. Our NPC companion who had been blinded by and artifact decided she would try to cast eldritch blast at it because things were getting desperate. She shot me in the back instead.

Anon works at his FLGS.
Anon is the only vaguely gamey person in his FLGS who is pretty much in charge of cardgames, RPGs, Tabletop Wargaming, and comic books simply by virtue of being the only one who knows anything about any of them.

Yesterday, a lady from a local autistic kids' incubation program run by a bunch of helicopter parents came in and asked for 16 premade, balanced decks. We just keep our cards that aren't new boosters in loose boxes for customers to request to look through.

The shop's owner promised that they'd be ready for her to pick up at 5 PM tomorrow, because he doesn't know anything about card games.

Tomorrow comes today, this morning I was told that I was going to handle building decks for her because it can't be that hard and I'm the one who sorts all the cards so I must know how to play every game we carry in the store. I've never voluntarily touched Yu-Gi-Oh save for sorting them into the boxes by color and letting the creepy weaboos do what they will as long as they're not stealing anything.

Help me, /tg/, you are my only hope of stemming the tide of weaboo goblins that will descend as a blight the likes of which have never been seen before.

Uh, fuck no. This is Konami. They don't playtest, balance, or anything like that. I know it's better, but the goblin herder was determined that she needed Yu-Gi-Oh because that's the cartoon the kids liked and she wants them to play games.
>>54800181
Because originally it was just a hobby shop but the owner's son was a geek and he wanted to impress his kid but his kid just left to do his own thing and now he's stuck with a FLGS which is basically the only FLGS in the city so everyone is desperate to get him to keep it.

Pic Related and Text to Speech Device are all I know about Yu-Gi-Oh. Pls Halp.

>Savage Worlds has its own system for this
>There's even optional rules for medieval sieges
>Players can do more than simply command their troops, albeit often at risk to themselves
There, done
>>
Players are given (or come up with) quest to make their side win or have a significant advantage.

Players do quest.
Assuming quest is believable, player side wins.

There, done.

"But what if the pitched combat is somehow spontaneous????"

Run combat with the players vs some of the enemy army as a microcosm of the battle.
The more the enemy army outnumbers the player army, the more fights the players have to have in a row. It's a mini-quest! Players can retreat if necessary.

If the players win then their side wins.

There, done.
Usable in any system!
>>
>>54797737
Most good systems have subsystems for this. Usually I benchmark each unit as 1D6, then move them in ranks through the field. Players are 1D6 as well. When two blocks collide they roll off, whoever loses spins down their D6 by the number they lost by. RPS advantage confers a re-roll. If you've got enough D6s you can color code based on unit type.
