actual spoiler: The alien plot is ruining the series, the protomolecule should've stayed on Venus. The "Thousand worlds" opening was a mistake. When they actually meet an alien as the authors plan, the series is dead in my mind
Any good hard science fiction books out there?
No aliens, I hate aliens.

First I don't think you reall yunderstand what a Mary Sue is

Second, the 'Main Character' as you keep putting it, isn't, and as the series progresses he becomes less important to the plot.

Third, if you read some more of the books, or had just been paying attention, you'd know your assumption in the spoiler is actually fairly unlikely. At least, not in the traditional sense.
>>
>>54852553
I'll agree that the books get worse as they go along.

Though, I liked the protomolecule bits in Cibola Burn and they were almost the ONLY good part of that book. The main side character was shit, the conflict felt like padding so that the characters could ignore the protomolecule plot until they filled out the page count.

Though the stated purpose of the series is to be in that gap between Humans as a Solar Culture and as a Galactic Culture. And they've kinda cheated with the gate system, but it's still very much humanity playing with things far above their capability to deal with.

I haven't picked up book six though, and that's because Nemesis Games was only alright. I hated all the belter revolution crap, but it did provide some good moments with the characters. It was better than Cibola, but not nearly as good as Leviathan or Caliban...

2300 AD?

In this thread we talk about Your Dudes. Share your stories about tabletop experiences regarding characters that stuck out. What ever, 40k, DnD, Shadowrun, other RPGs, you name it.
I wish to share the story of one particular case of Your Dudes that started for me years ago from a single digital conscript model. Pic Related: His current form in an ongoing Rogue Trader campaign.

PT.1 - First Steps
Back in the day when Astra Militarum were still called the Imperial Guard, when conscripts were a brand new thing and Centurions were yet to arrive. Me and a few friends decided to give tabletop 40k a go through a VASSAL plugin. All of us were too poor and too far from each other to get together and build armies good n' propa.

I went with a build of artillery and meat shields with IG, some few thousand points worth on the list. Very basic gear and as many conscripts as I can muster. Ended up playing my first match against my friend's Eldar army that focused on warp spiders, vehicles and the crown jewel in the form of an Avatar of Khaine.
On the third turn is where a legacy is born. Now, even though I had a Lord Commissar keeping my conscripts in check, I'm sure I played this wrong. Fairly sure now it wasn't possible to have a squad consisting of a single conscript simply refusing to retreat. We were new at the game so meh.
Throughout the game my meat shields did what they were supposed to do, keep the Eldar from butt fucking my numerous artillery units who bombarded the living shit out of anything far enough. On the third turn, as the Avatar had taken damage enough to be at a single wound and when most of my infantry were maimed to oblivion, this one conscript was the target of a charge by this menacing creature. Just as my opponent rolled the dice, I called overwatch, or what ever it was called back then. The charge, while risky, would've been enough to get close and be unreachable due to my artillery's minimum range and my other dudes being mauled by warp spiders. ---

PT.2 - Rising in Rank
Now, this glorious bastard managed to score a hit and a wound. This already felt amazing enough, and I would have been pleased to see my final conscript go in a glorious fashion as the avatar would shrug off the hit in anger. Nevertheless, against all odds this Avatar must have slipped on all the dead guardsmen around it and given more push towards the beam of the ever reliable lasgun. Final wound, and the Avatar fell.
My opponent called it quits at this point, saying that all the remaining Eldar retreat.
>Please don't field conscripts again.
I started calling the guy by a name, at this point in the form of Antero Rokka (Homage to a Finnish war book/film character), and on the next battle I would say my Lord Commissar had risen in rank in the war against the Eldar from a conscript. Now playing with more Chimeras, Leman Russ tanks and Heavy Weapons teams instead of just plain meatshields, I was heading against the chaos army of my other friend.
In this battle something amazing happened once more. Antero would be leading a squad of regular guardsmen into a desperate melee charge against Chaos Raptors, and WIN.
The battle was lost in the end, but Lord Commissar Rokka as well as his squad managed to get out of the field of battle.

PT.3 - An old acolyte
Years passed, and I never forgot about these battles. Never got into tabletop more as I started studying, and instead moved over to pen and paper RPGs. However, I drew the character a few times as well for shits and giggles and he kind of became iconic to me when it comes to 40k. Whenever someone would talk about warhammer, these two battles would come to mind.
Well, not too far ago another friend of mine decided to give a shot at running Dark Heresy 2nd edition. My chance to revive Antero Rokka, or more fittingly now Anterion Roghardt, has arrived. I came up with a more solid background for him and his role within the group of misfit Inquisitorial Acolytes under the Ordo Xenos would be nothing else than an Assassin. Despite his suitably low-ish Ballistic Skill score.
I'll change the format a little in further posts. Trying to get in the head of the character as things happened. The stuff up to now has mainly been the origins of this old fart of a guardsman.
>>
>>54852528
PT.4 - Horror at Desoleum
"I never expected to blessed by the Emperor as many times as I must have been" Anterion muttered as woke in the face of a mission after his Inquisitorial indoctrination as an acolyte of the Ordo Xenos. Pushing the age of 60 he had already received some treatment to make sure his vigor would not be affected by his aging body. He had seen terrors like no other. And despite seeing and knowing of forbidden beings, he has not fallen corrupt or lost his mind. The Inquisition found him to be a valuable asset. Or so he was made believe, while never seeing his master face-to-face.
He accompanied a group of acolytes to be set upon the hive world Desoleum, tasked to investigate bizarre deaths reportedly relating to xeno artifacts.
Once planetbound, the group consisting of Anterion himself, Zariel - an imperial guardsman, Liath - chainsword wielding chirurgeon, Karpath - a holy prient of the emperor and Folk - our psyker extraordinaire, was to hopefully keep a low profile. They were disguised as the local Arbites for the sake of keeping Inquisitorial involvement a secret.
"Our lead tells of one San Giljian, a noble apparenty somehow connected to the underworld trade of heretical artifacts" Karpath exclaimed. The group made way to find the manor of Giljian where the servants were hesitant to let the Arbites inside. Both groups being suspiscious of each other, the discussion was cut short by a horrid scream coming from inside the manor. Without hesitation, Anterion barged in with Long-Las prepared. Others followed. Once breaching the door to San's study, the sight they beheld was enough to make one of the acolytes run in fear while two others as well as the servants started vomiting uncontrollably. Keeping his calm, Anterion took aim and would make sure to pull the trigger at the first sign of offensive behaviour.
Nevertheless, San was only mangling himself, tearing flesh and skin, rupturing his eyes and biting his tongue until death took him.

This is boris. He was instakilled at full hp by the DM with no rolls or saving throws. He was too young to die

Why do DMs do this? DM anger thread

boris sounds like an NPC. DM should have free reign when it comes to killing NPCs if it adds to the story. The aged barkeep has a heart attack? Instant death, no save. The queen is being held hostage by an assassin at knife point and dumbass players charge in? Automatic hit unless magically disabled, queen is at -8 hp regardless of health or stats.

>>54845363
Why invent a system for something that runs out of the box using D&D?
>>
>>54845729
I don't want to invent any system, sorry if I misworded it, but rather choose one.
I figured D&D was a very viable option, but it kinda feels OSRish, at least what I understand by OSR as I haven't had the change to play it. What edition would you recommend?
>>
>>54845729
Yeah, this is pretty much just a regular Dungeon crawl with a few setting specific artifacts and abilities. Even the curse of the abyss is just something the Gm can hand-wave with a saving throw.

>Try to travel upwards
>Make a saving roll
>DC depends on how strong the force field is in this area.
>Failure effect depends on what level of the abyss you are on.
>Success gives you a weaker version of the effect, unless the force field is weaker than normal, in which case nothing happens.

Hey /tg/

I'm usually hanging on /v/ but I need some suggestions from you guys. My sister was usually the one playing tabletop roleplaying games but she recently got a new boyfriend and is now 'over them'. She was going to sell her collection but I told her I wanted it so she gave me the books. I want to try a tabletop rpg with my friends but don't know where to start or if they are worth playing. So here's what I seem to have.

-Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 3rd edition, lots of boxes and cards and shit, looks complicated.

-Dark Herery and a couple of other books. I always liked Warhammer 40k but only in vidya form.

-Rogue Trader, looks fun, it's the one she was playing a lot, she even got a big box with a collector edition or something. It has a warrant of trade with her character name on it, pretty cool.

-Eclipse Phase, looks unique.

-Pathfinder, only got the core and advanced player guide.

-DnD 4th and 5th edition, core books only, they look new I don't think she played them a lot.

-Legend of the 5 rings, the book is beautiful but I'm not into samurais that much.

That's pretty much what i have on hand. I was looking at trying Rogue Trader since it is the one I have the most material to work with. I like Warhammer fantasy too but it looks like to be a lot of preparation and a big table. What would you guys suggest me?

Tabletop newfag here, I've been trying ot get into it as well but I lack materials and there aren't a lot of game shops within walking distance.

That said, based off what little I DO know, I'd say RT and Pathfinder first, maybe.
>>
>>54844855
Rogue Trader is a favorite of mine. I can't recommend it enough.
It's actually very cross-compatible with Dark Heresy; the books should have details on that.

5e is the newest version of D&D and is both popular and good for beginners, so if you want to find people to play with or rope people into a game that's a pretty safe option to learn.

4e isn't bad, but rubs a lot of people the wrong way for a few reasons. And, you'd probably want more than just the core books, especially when it comes to monsters.

Pathfinder is a bit of a clusterfuck with a lot of arcane bits that can put people off if they're out of the loop on it all. I'd only recommend you learn it if you're planning on playing with a group of people experienced with it.

I've heard Warhammer Fantasy 3rd Edition isn't bad, but it was enough of a departure from the other versions to piss people off. If it's a complete set of stuff I've heard it's pretty fun.

Never played Eclipse Phase but I've heard good things. The rules are also free digitally, so it'd be easy enough to get a group going. Wouldn't have to worry too much about sharing copies of books.

Don't really know much about Legend of the 5 Rings.

At the very least, take good care of it all. There's certainly a chance she'll regret just dropping a hobby.

>>54844855
There's a general thread for every game you listed except Eclipse Phase, you might be able to get some opinions in them.

I am looking for more exotic dice rolling systems, such as where you roll dice and where they land on a template (or similar) as well as their number decides things. An example I am looking for is like the city generator from Vornheim.

Don't know about die landing on a spot. But there is some odd matching mechanic in games build around the One Roll Engie and Legends of wulin and Cuthulutech.

Other than that there games like fantasy flight Star Wars which don't use standard dice at all.

Is there a starter set I should track down? Or just get escape from goblin town since its the only one GW is selling?

Starters good for scenario play, but i would hold off personally as there is anew consoilidated rulebook due out very shortly. what sort of playstyle are you looking for?
>>
>>54837056
Casual really, with friends it's just overwhelming as hell. Ive bout a few cheap miniatures like saruman for ten dollarydoos, I'm not even sure what army I want yet but it's not goblins so I feel like a starter pack that doesn't have any part of an army I want is a waste

I'm happy to get some heroes I like from the books but I don't want to practice painting on them feel like grunt units would be better for that, the new book is out this year?

I have the return of the king rule book but that's pretty old, has scenarios though
>>
>>54837146
in that case go for any army you feel like. pick up a source book and go for it. all armies, can ally with one another good and evil exclusive of course) so you can run any theme you want. if you go for the popular armies such as isengard you'll find swathes of it on ebay you can pick up for pennies to practice on.
