Tell me about your favorite system and why /tg/

My group and I are are finally getting tired of DnD and we want to branch out, everyone is up to trying out anything, no matter what the setting/rule set is, and I know there are a fuck ton more tabletop systems out there than I'll ever find on my own, so sell me on your favorites.

Barbarians of Lemuria: the only game where the rules support any character background or set of capabilities and magic is actually balanced. Barbs is one of the few games where you can come to the table with a character concept and the rules will support it, rather than making a character with bits of rules and trying to rationalize it after the fact.

As some one who plays 40k and knows virtually nothing about infinity, could you kind anons give me a few reasons as to why it is better or worse then 40k/different from 40k/worth playing? not trolling, just very curious
>>
>>54937579

Pretty sure it is much cheaper.

From what I have seen has much less cheese.

More viable units than from where I left
40k ( no Vespids / Flash Gits)

Much smaller model count

Games are really swingy.

Butts
>>
>>54937579
It's quite different in scale and pacing. The most major difference for me is the low amount of models (=can be painted to better standard) and the fact that there is very little downtime in the game. The action focus on the are of the field where something important is happening and you constantly engage with your opponent during play, so the other guy doesn't have time to get bored. Also having lots of terrain makes the playing field pretty.

I'm planning on going to the Grand Prix in DC but am stuck on what deck to play, i have a lot of experience with both zombies and Blue-Red control. I feel like the format is slowing down enough to where control is viable but i am still very worried about the ramunap red match up.

Control - https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/733737#paper

UW and BR control are both growing in popularity, and those have pretty decent matchups against ramunap. That said, your UR could use a LOT of work.

Locust is a sideboard tech at best, too inflexible and slow on the main.

Get 3 or 4x torrential, that's your main, and often only, wincon, and it dies to abrade.

4 supreme will is too much. If you're going to run that many get extra disallows and censors and stuff instead. Censor in particular is extremely good, try 3-4

Less Harnassed, more abrade. Abrade is good in mirrors and against Gift.

That sideboard is also a mess. Try dragonmaster for UW monument, and 2 crooks.
>>
>>54928121
thanks, the sideboard was the thing i was really concerned about, not very good at sideboarding since i only get to see my local meta.
I went down a harnessed lightning and a supreme will for another censor and abrade for a 3-3 split for harnessed/abrade and a 3-3-3 split for censor/disallow/supreme will.
I definitely need help with the sideboard but added another crook and will pick up some Dragonmasters this weekend but I'm not really sure what to cut, maybe the by force and ceremonious rejection?

fenrisian cline.jpg

One of the things about Fenrisians is that they start out as looking and acting more or less normal and can pass for normal most of the time, even the men. But the scraps of code that have leached into the population from interbreeding with Russ' Dog Soldiers has had an effect on them.

The introduction of a full blown Canis Helix into an already mildly mutated individual will result in the mutations becoming exaggerated. Elongated canine teeth, excessive body hair, face subtly altering so that the res position looks "grumpy" and often a change in eye colour; these are the visible effects of the super soldier augmentation.

A sad and shameful truth of the Canis Helix is that the mutations do not stop.

The inhumanity in features and temperament only become more pronounced with time. How much time varies greatly with the individual but eventually all Space Wolves become Wolfen. Sometimes the mutations mature so slowly that the individual, even augmented, will die old and in their bed (or someone's bed) before it becomes a concern. Most die in battle before they have to worry.

For the unfortunate individual who does not die as a warrior or whose curse grows quickly they devolve into the dreaded and pitied Wulfen. Typically they are not mistreated by their more human brothers, they are fed and given a place by the hearth to sleep. Most have freedom of moment within the Fang and in the surrounding lands. They are not more dangerous to the common folk than they were as men, just uglier and stupider. They get invited to the wars and it is there that they still shine.

It is sometimes a steep price that the soldier of Fenris pay to serve the Imperium as best they can, but they pay it and they pay it knowingly and gladly.

Inquisitor Commodus Voke in this timeline survived the Thracian Gate Atrocity.

In this timeline the APEX twins Ethel and Gretel were still present but they weren't captives paraded as captured in war. They were eating ice cream in the crowd.

They assisted in the cleaning up and mitigating the problem somewhat, though this is possibly one of the few instances that they have ever been in serious danger.

By the time anyone got their shit together enough to look for them they were long, long gone.

Voke was the Inquisitorial Representative of the High Lords prior to Hector Rex. After his 10 year stint in the big chair he went back to his job but the urging of his friends (such few as he had) and colleagues to retire due to age and failing health caused him to find a compromise. He is now spending his twilight years as the Inquisitorial Overseer to the chapter Guardians of t

I have just ventured into DM'ing in D&D 5e. I've run two sessions now and both went fairly well. However, doing voices and acting isn't natural for me.

To which degree do you think it's possible that the DM simply narrates in the third-person instead of going first person? As in, "The merchant tells you that the information you seek..." etc. I appreciate how going first person is often "better", and more in spirit with real role-playing, but if I am simply not very good at it, I'm afraid players easily pick up on it and see through my poor attempt at doing characters.

What do you prefer in a DM? Also, do you have any general do's and don't's for for DMs?

>>
It's absolutely acceptable, and in fact it's often a good idea to skip over unimportant conversations by summarising them in 3rd person narration.

Some people are really into roleplaying games for the improv theater aspect, but just as many aren't too comfortable with it and would rather approach the fiction as setup and framing for the real gameplay.
>>
>>54968408
>However, doing voices and acting isn't natural for me.
Fuck voices. If you're really good at them, they can be awesome, but very few people are. Most of the time they end up sounding silly and are therefore a distraction. Not only that, but they sometimes take the GM's focus away from other, more important stuff.

I've been GMing off and on for something like three decades now, and I don't do voices. I mean, if somebody's angry, I'll raise my voice a bit, or if they're agitated, I'll convey that by being a bit twitchy or something, but I'm not doing Shakespeare. Really, all I'm trying to do is give people enough of a hint that they know what to imagine in their heads.

I suspect that you've set your goalposts too high, and that is tripping you up. I'd fall flat on my face if I tried to be a master thespian. When you're first learning to juggle, you shouldn't start with chainsaws. And really, even most people who are experienced jugglers should also stay the hell away from chainsaws.
>>
>>54968544
With that said, there really is no "right" way to GM. I'd encourage you not to give up on something too easily just because it's a bit tricky at first, but ultimately you shouldn't feel obligated to play a certain way. And different groups have different styles of play.

>>54968480
>in fact it's often a good idea to skip over unimportant conversations by summarising them in 3rd person narration.
This is true. GMs can control the pacing of a game by deciding when to role-playing something out in detail, when to just role-play a bit or do a skeletal back-and-forth in 3rd person, or when to just summarize and move on.

Times when your PCs went on stupidly long tangents and side quests to get some menial item(s) or to do something 'just cause'

Today 2 people from our game traveled for 4 days across the plane to trick a merchant that 2 vagrants were actually the ones who stole all the gold they recently spent to buy 12 kegs of blackpowder.

The blackpowder has no significants to the current campaign they were just able to stop the summoning of an extremely powerful black dragon at one point by rolling a cart full of powder down a cave into the location the summoning was happening; and now they are convinced its the most fool proof plan and have invested ALL of their gold into it.

Its great. The wiki creation is intuitive, I've got all the major NPCs uploaded for the length of the campaign along with their stats, image and relevant story points and the Forum is all set up with folders for each major topic of conversation.
And the players haven't touched it other than logging into it for the first time and RSVPing to the first session which could have just been done using a Google calendar invite. Buying a 12 month subscription was a huge mistake.

The problem with benders is the same problem with Jedi. Sure, you could make a non-force user who's just as good as a Jedi or a Sith. There are probably tons of fun and creative options and ways to do it.

But if you let people be a Jedi, they will always want to be Jedi. If you let people be a Bender, they will always want to be a Bender. Sure, some of them might roll non-Bender, but if they do it's not because they think Bending is dumb. If they thought Bending was dumb, they wouldn't be playing an Avatar based game. The same way that if people didn't like Jedi, they wouldn't play a Star Wars game. If they roll non-Bender, it's because they want to stand out. They want to be a Bender, they just want to be special more.

That said, unless you're going to have this be a very low combat setting, you'll probably have an easier time just playing in a system like Mutants and Masterminds. Having classes outside of Bending is silly, because it makes more sense to just use a point buy system.

That said, I will answer your question, because you seem pretty cool. You could do the different martial arts, such as Kyoshi's Fans, or Chi Blocking, or even base them on weapon types like Jet's Tiger Hooks or Sokka's Dao.
