I found out this today (yes, i'm a newfag)
This summarize why i hate 3.5 but i would have never expected that it was a "feature" didi i fell for the joke or is this shit real?
>>55018940
It's an after-the-fact rationalization for their abject failure.
>>55018940
The thing that really drives in the utter retardation of those designers home is the fact that they don't even understand the meaning of the whole "Timmy card" analogy they use. Timmy cards are, in fsct, not useless. Often times they're cards with big flashy effects, and sometimes, yes, those cards for all their big flashy effects are just too difficult to bring into play or use effectively... but other times they can be a very effective and very valid playstyle. Timmy cards appeal to a certain playstyle and play up to a certain fantasy, but they do not, in fact, exist just to be useless or "punish" people who haven't spent weeks autistically researching how to break the game systems.
There's a fine line between what they intended, player discovery driven mechanics, and just full blown beginner traps. They may have leaned a bit towards beginner trap, but their intention was good. Imagine if dark souls had endless tutorials teaching you how to fight effectively, had linear maps, and held your hands in boss fights. It wouldn't be nearly as fun, not because of a change in mechanical difficulty, but because you didn't learn to face those challenges on you own it's less satisfying. They tried for a similar experience and failed miserably.
What would the standard fantasy DnD setting turn into if it changed so that all arcane magic stole energy from the sun, kind of like Athas?
>>55018481
>Somebody casts any 9th-level spell
>World freezes
I dont know dude. What is the speed of magic and how far is the Sun?
Might take a while for your spell to arrive
Athas arcane magic draws power from the environment and life energy, not the sun iirc.
You'd probably see a rise in Alchemists, Psionicists, or people specializing in regular engineering amongst the smart guys of the world.

Yet another lovely day to be a Mage, lads.

So, I was looking to start a private game with some friends I haven't seen in a long time. Plan was to use Tabletop Simulator, with the in-game tablets hooked up to fancy Google Sheets that do all kinds of handy stuff, more than basic calculation. TTS loads them, but once you load the party's sheets, the game slows to a fucking crawl. Sooooo.....
I wanna keep using my custom google sheets program. What VTT is my best bet? is it R20? Is there a good guide to getting going in R20?
Thanks.
>>55017226
Roll20 is good enough and has good documentation on how to use it.
>>55017226
Well roll20 is definitely a good option and it's free. they have built in tutorials and a faq for special hotkeys codes and other things.
>>55017226
If you want to play any of the rulesets supported by it, Fantasy Grounds is worth the $10/mo. The amount of automation you get from it makes Roll20 look like using physical sheets with broken crayons.
What would an Indian setting involve other than superpowerful gods? What kind of themes and culture is involved?
>strict caste system
>a gorillion different kinds of holy men/hermits
>possible sacred animal
On the more fantasy side, ancient cities and temples lost in the jungle would make for good dungeon romps.
>>55017155
Watch Baahubali. It's basically live-action anime.
>>55017155
The concept of Dharma if applied to a fantasy setting would be interesting. Everyone's soul has a particular divine duty that they should fulfil, do it and you get good karma, break from it and you get bad karma. It would be interesting to consider a setting where these things are much more obvious and direct.

Is there a point in which one should stop attempting to become good at GMing?
I have considerable experience with one-on-one sessions. I have run approximately ~280-290 of them in the past few years. They play smoothly, with only sporadic problems caused by autism-borne misunderstandings.
Group sessions are different. I have GMed roughly ~80-90 such sessions over the past few years. My group games have universally been disastrous. They have been plagued with major problems and misunderstandings at *least* every other session.
I play exclusively with friends and strong acquaintances I have already seen "in play." Before each campaign, I try to set expectations with them and align preferences. In theory, this should be a good foundation. In practice, I wind up misinterpreting preferences, misunderstanding people, and miscommunicating concepts.
At least every other week, one big problem arises, and it causes huge out-of-game arguments. Whether it is about combat encounters, noncombat problem-solving, the setting, the NPCs, the way I treat the PCs, or any other aspect of GMing, there are always more problems.
My players are kind and patient enough to discuss the problem together, try to solve it, and try to improve my GMing. Sometimes, we make progress, but otherwise, problems remain unsolved. Previously solved problems start recurring, and new problems crop up.
Eventually, players drop out (usually due to an outright "I dislike your GMing style"), and I have to cancel the game due to player dissatisfaction. Most of the players stay in touch with me and try again in a future group campaign of mine... and the neverending cycle begins anew.
I feel as though I cannot improve at GMing for a group. It is frustrating. I attend weekly social skills therapy for autists; my therapist is familiar with many RPGs and discusses them during therapy, but even they cannot do much to help me improve my ability to understand and manage people. What can I do to help myself?
>>55016278
Do you get real criticism besides "I dislike your GMing style"?
Talk to your players you fucking autist.

There isn't much we can do without more details.

He had the coolest backstory of any primarch, and his legion was pretty cool at the start.
>>55015944
He has a plastic model while Armless the Harmless continues to languish as 20 year old manlet finecrap.
Have your games ever gotten surreal or creepy?
>Surreal
Once, one of the PCs was having a half-spirit journey, half-acid trip. During one of the sequences, I described him standing in a perfectly square room with stars shining in all five corners.
I then gave him a sanity check when he brought up the inconsistency.
>>55015754
Yes
>>55015754
Oh it's gonna.
First session tomorrow is probably going to go straight into Lovecraft's asshole pretty quickly.
>Player uses flasks of oil as his primary weapon
Do you, as the DM, make him trip when he has a belt full of bottles and a torch in hand?
>>55015621
no, because the player is trying to have fun and bringing something interesting to the table and you're being a dick.
If he's ruining the game by being random and burning everything he sees then sure, yeah, lord of light him or whatever.
>>55015621
No, but I'll make sure he understands the risk when traversing difficult terrain. I'm not about to fuck over one of my players that hard, but if they roleplay a little more cautiously then I'm more than happy with the result.
no, because i'm not an asshole who punishes players for having fun.
So how would it be done? What components would you put in for a Primarch creation table?
>>55015378
Potential xenosweaponry which no other Primarch would be caught dead using.
>>55015913
Samus is a Deamon. Death incarnate who predates the great crusade by millennia, not a lost Primarch. We all know this. It's canon.
>>55015990
Well to be fair he was on point with the Xeno tech bit. That would be a good reason why they would be expunged.
Anything else lads?
Anyone on /tg/ rich enough to buy Invisible Sun?
If they were rich enough, hopefully they were smart enough not to.
Although in some ways I am glad that bizarre piece of nonsense got funded. It'll be fun to watch people do teardowns and analysis of all the supposedly super hidden mysteries and then clearly collate all the information on a wiki. It'll be fascinating to see the attempt at mystique so utterly undermined in an instant.
>>55015303
I don't really know what you're talking about.
I mean, I think that's going to happen pretty quick is the scanning and copying of this data to online sources, since there's no .pdf version planned. I mean they say it's spread out too esoterically or whatever, but in the same sense, theres something retarded like 500 pages of game yapping. It's probably a really standard system with a bunch of tokens.
>>55015472
I think the wiki is the real threat. The puzzle-hunters will get the PDF scans but their answer keys and the basic will just get uploaded in summary, and the system itself has no IP protections just that specific presentation of it.
There's a part of me that really hopes he's built something interesting and useful that will have an existence beyond the kickstarter cash-grab, but I have to say I doubt it. But if it is good system and it ever does come out in a no-bullshit rules-and-recommendations-only PDF I could easily see myself dropping $20 on it.

Man, that's even worse. Not being able to warp them was bad enough, but even portals won't work? That goes beyond "reasonable narrative limitations" and into absurdity. It's pretty much the equivalent of the airlock the hero throws the villain out of literally growing an arm and catching them. Not due to any ability or skill of the villain, but Deus ex Machina. If anything it's an anti-narrative clause.

Vive le Québec libre
This is a sentence I really did not expect to read on /tg/.
The fuck is this?
>>55015164
What french language police in Quebec think of themselves.
I work as a distributor for the United States and Latin America.
Force of will was supposed to die in 2016, didn't die.
The game was actually selling better tha any Bushiroad product.
Bushi was really affected, causing major loses for Buddyfight and Luck &Logic,
they decided to launch a counterattack cancelling the New Luck & logic tcg and launching the new game "western inspired Dragonborne" in summer 2017.
Smear campaign beggins in winter 2016, the goal was talking shit about FOW on social media, phrases like "game is diying", "hey im selling all my collection", it worked, the players lost a lot of confidance on the game.
there´s a lot of drama between fow PR and the ex judge of fow, tha later wanted the be the authority of FOW US but the things don´t work like that with the japanese, this guys left and currently is ruining more japanese tcgs.
The PR guy actually has minor control in the control of the creations of cards.
by spring 2017 fow boxes recoveresd value.
Only US has this drama Spain an Italy has and amazing playerbase>>>>
.
Dragonborne(bushiroad) primary market are FOW and Heartstone players,
Caster(FOW company) was supposed to compete against Luck & logic, but it was canceld on the west.
Architecs(FOW company) was rebuild from a "cancelled" Fow set, the new people on Fow decided to continue with the original storyline instead.
Dominator( Fow company) has a much bigger budget than the last 2 tcg but is not a replacement for the Main game (force of will tvg).
Any idea why then the FOW Company still wants to make all these new card games, if they're still struggling to recover the FOW fanbase? Are they planning to stop supporting FOW?
>>55014996
>I work as a distributor for the United States and Latin America.
Sure thing
>Force of will was supposed to die in 2016, didn't die.
Why was it supposed to die?
>The game was actually selling better tha any Bushiroad product.
ANY bushiroad product? I swear Buddyfight and Vanguard are still tiptop sellers.
>Bushi was really affected, causing major loses for Buddyfight and Luck &Logic,
>they decided to launch a counterattack cancelling the New Luck & logic tcg and launching the new game "western inspired Dragonborne" in summer 2017.
Luck and Logic died its death because the game was complicated and uninteresting. Getting ahead in the game means putting yourself behind and giving your opponent shit to do. Awful design.
>Smear campaign beggins in winter 2016, the goal was talking shit about FOW on social media, phrases like "game is diying", "hey im selling all my collection", it worked, the players lost a lot of confidance on the game.
These people have always existed ever since fucking MOA
>there´s a lot of drama between fow PR and the ex judge of fow, tha later wanted the be the authority of FOW US but the things don´t work like that with the japanese, this guys left and currently is ruining more japanese tcgs.
If you're talking about Jorge and Stephanie, that's because the company didn't compensate them enough for their work. There are other reasons but that's one of the main ones.
>The PR guy actually has minor control in the control of the creations of cards.
That's because all Jordan is is a translator and english PR person. He also writes the lore. And guess what, in this latest cluster he DID get control in the creation of cards. You know what he added, useless as shit seals abilities.
>by spring 2017 fow boxes recoveresd value.
Good.
>Only US has this drama Spain an Italy has and amazing playerbase>>>>
What drama? Bushiroad is a Japanese company, as is FOW. So this should also be an issue in Japan too you filthy shitposter
