admittedly don't know much in-game about the salimanders, but as a start your best bet is to try and whatever starter set is available in your shop, it gives you 2 armies to start with along with all the rules and templates your going to need to play. now for the disclaimer: know that 40k is an expensive hobby to get into, so recognize that on average your going to be dropping $40-50 on a unit/vehicle/model. other than that just pick whatever faction is fun for you to play and stick with it.

I wouldn't go for Dark vengeance like the others suggested, actually. Space Marine start collecting box + one or two of the armoured assault boxes would be the way to go for pure marines.

Or even JUST armoured assault boxes + He'stan, using the marine bodies to make extra dev squads with all your tac squad bits (hint: never run 10 man tac squads).

Get cheap mini rulebook on ebay, pirate codices on a tablet.

Though some of the fluff does make it out to be an Avatar of the planet. Worldwide nuclear apocalypse could make the earth sick enough to kill Tarry outright.

Actual skill at writing a complex setting with a unified flavor and theme requires a bit more editting and review. Like, I don't know, the difference between putting down fenceposts and drafting a ship design.


40k was originally written by people with a very good education, a lot of thought, and a lot of exposure to landmark media (which is being partially folded under 'good education, sorry).

It looks like a pastiche of over the top nonsense and everything cool and it is- but the thing about skill with design is that when you're really good at it, it does look effortless.

Then twenty years later some other schmucks take a look and go, "well, it's super over the top and comically grimdark and appeals to teenage boys... okay, that's simple, we can do more of that."

And slowly the fluff gets worse.

They actually did fight in Unremembered Empire.

Curze snuck into the "Emperors" palace in Magna Maccrage Civitas and pretended to be the head of Sanguinius' body guard and sent a message for Sanguinius to come to the throne room. Sanguinius came unarmoured and it was Curze sitting in the throne and they fought. They both had future vision to help each other out and they fought to a standstill IIRC. Then Curze asked Sanguinius to kill him but Sanguinius tried to tell Curze there was still time to come back to the Emperors side but he made the mistake of saying something that made it appear that he pitied Curze and it triggered batman so he blew up the throne room and left.

Kahn and Corax could have been pretty cool.

I would have loved to see Angron vs Vulkan and see how many times he could have killed him before Vulkan knocked him out.
