Party is on ground floor of a tower. In a floor above them is a dragon and party is whispering. What DC should dragon exceed in order to understand what is spoken? I think his Passive perception 17 is more then enough to hear what is said.

A 17 is enough to hear whispering on another floor?

That'd just end up with the players getting upset, since you'll be nullifying all of their careful planning without even a chance for success.

I have been a DM for fifteen years. I've always enjoyed crafting worlds and tying together cohesive plots. But in all of my experience, games never go to 'plan'. You are always going to be babysitting a group of murderous toddlers who just want to steal, murder, and fight.

So let's talk about that. Most memorable game starts, or experiences where you as the game runner just sit in your chair staring at the stream of near-autism that is flying at you.

A few years back, I had the idea to design a world traveler campaign. I fleshed out a really dynamic world that would change at the click of a macro on roll20. Kingdoms and regions had economies. Enemy factions had trackers to see how they were doing, whether they were getting out of control. Whether or not the party would start hearing about them.

To really get the group interested in roving, I added travel mechanics, and started them in a real dump - out in a wasteland full of destitute orcs. The run down orc shanty they were started in is where all the crippled and dishonored orcs were sent to be forgotten while to the south, a massive orcish horde was gathering up to invade the kingdom to the west.

So this party of champions decides that they are going to deliver water to the village. And the orcs immediately drink it all. So they go and get more. And the orcs drink it all. And then they go and get water...

So I have this dynamic world that is going nuclear because the party isn't doing anything in it. Most of the regions get wiped out by the click of a macro and spill-over of faction war.

Finally, the party gets wiped out by a flood of kobolds because they have literally been doing nothing but breeding up a horde.
>>
consider that the people you're playing with probably aren't violent criminals

they don't steal, they don't murder, they don't fight on a regular basis. these things are out of the ordinary - exciting - to them. if your players can immerse themselves and get excited about these things, and more importantly, have fun... isn't that the goal of the game? people play to have experiences they don't get in real life, which is why a lot of autistics try to capture people in their magical realms.

It's also a accepted thing that to reduce the possibilities of a pnp game to fulfilling hedonistic fantasies at the expense of all else is rude, unless that is the stated point of the game.
OP would profit from telling his players exactly what kind of tone they are looking for; in my current D&D game, I expressly told the group I want Big Damn Heroes. They don't need to be GOOD, but I want the kind of brass balls and daring do that you see in the stories of old.
I will not coddle them, and if they fail, there will be consequences, but the profit for those who succeed are there to be had.

I need your help with themed powers, /tg/!

To give some context, I've been playing in a homebrewed d20 One Piece system with some friends for a while now. It's been fun, but I recently stumbled into trouble with conflicting character concepts, thankfully at the end of a session so I have time to think about it. We have a rule about devil fruits (fruits that give your character a themed power suit, like 'fire' or 'rubber' that you then stat powers for), which is that when you have your character eat one, your power is decided by a random word generator rather than GM or player decision. No rerolls, no takebacks.

I finally had my character eat a devil fruit at the end of last session, and her random word was 'Huge'. That's not terrible or anything, but I'm just not sure what to do with it. Pic related is built to be very dexterous and dodgy, so while appeasing giantess fetishists is the most obvious answer, it wouldn't really fit the character theme or mechanics, I think.

What other powers can you think of that would fit the theme of the word 'Huge' that don't rely on growing in size? I'd very much appreciate it.

What about taking on aspects of being huge without actually changing size... like weighing hundreds of pounds, or hitting with far more force than someone the character's size should be able to hit.

You could also use "huge" to refer to things besides the character herself. Like the ability to turn glancing wounds into huge gashes and wounds, and on a large scale maybe even damage to things like structures or ships with a good hit. Basically the thing you're making huge isn't yourself but the wounds/damage you inflict.
>>
>>51455230
I like it! Specifically the idea of making one's effects huge without actually being huge. The general idea for making these powers is that they have to have a singular 'effect', which is just used in different ways. So, a person who gets 'flames' would have the effect of creating fire, while the individual statted powers would be stuff like using those flames to jet yourself around, shooting it in a line/cone/ball, or even coating yourself in the stuff to make your punches hurt more. In that case though, it wouldn't let someone control fire that was already present, or shoot lava or anything like that.

So, if the character's power had a central 'effect' that every statted power would be based on, how would you describe it? We tend to roll with anime tropes in the group, so how do you think a character would sum it all up in a sentence?

Sum it up in a single sentence? Probably something along the lines of

>"This character's intent to exert force seems to suffuse into space itself in a way that everything they do has a huge effect, in their hands a knife cuts as deep and jagged as a large sword and their fist hits with the impact of a giant's hammer."

What's a good system for meaty hand-to-hand combat in the vein of Sleeping Dogs without being 100% combat centric? I'm looking to run a gangland drama in the same sort of style as Hong Kong action movies from the 80's, but give the players more options than just 'punch your way out of it'.

IMO one of the best systems for modern games where you want flexibility. Shooting rules are fantastic, injury rules are gritty yet fair and allow for heroic moments and tension, grappling rules are my personal fav part of the system.

Hey /tg/
Gonna start collecting an army for WH40K but not sure where to start, Been thinking it over for a few weeks now. Any suggestions? Want some insight before I drop dollars on GW fuckass expensive models.

Have you looked over the possible armies, and do any of them appeal to you aesthetically? If so, pick up the Start Collecting box for that army, play a few games, find out what you're missing, build from there.

Or are you more of a crunch person, and you just want to run something that will be competitive in tournaments? The WH40k general thread can help you pick out something meta.
>>
>>51453504
Im honestly not too concerned with the meta really. I know its always changed with codex updates and my super buff army could be shit in a few months. I really like the Look of Genestealer Cults and Orks. Also like Skitarii but they have a limited unit roster and i'd like at least some flexibility.
>>
>>51453574

Orks are, from what I understand, hilariously bad. Certain units are fun, but on the whole you'd be fighting uphill battles the majority of the time.

I don't know much about Genestealer cults, but a few minutes' research indicates they're a horde army with decent shooting, great melee, and a lot of tricky ambush tactics. Sounds like fun, but be prepared to assemble and paint a lot of models.

Skitarii are actually my main army right now - they're best fielded with Cult Mechanicus allies, and have several formations where you combine units from the two armies. In my opinion, they're the most 'glass-cannon' army in the game, with some of the best guns around, okay melee, the ability to buff one of those at the expense of the other, but weak defensively. Also badass cyborgs.

Are your PCs the only living creatures in your world which gain experience? Do the other inhabitants of your world become stronger through combat and exploration? Would a spider gain experience points just from killing and eating insects? Are giant and dire versions of animals just high level animals?
7 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
I use some custom rules for experience. You need to train. You don't go to bed one night and wake up higher level. Instead you gain the ability to advance after sufficient training.

Literally everyone can do this. NPC, PC, animals even.
>>
>>51451767
Only things with Int 3 or higher can gain experience, that rules out most "common" animals. At least that's the way we play it.
>>
In my setting, snakes, lizards, and other reptiles that "level up" can become dragons, and rather than age normally they grow and "age" by killing and eating things, similar in how the PC's gain experience from killing things. Admittedly inspired from Dark Souls, but I find it lets the PC's know just how fucked they are when they see an ancient dragon, which pretty much had to commit genocide to get that big.

Oh I can completely see the justification. 40k as a system is fucked, and although I wouldn't favor a system as simple as AOS or based off the retarded D6 (fuck you D6), if I had the power I would scrap all the rules. 40k is currently an objectively shit game suffering from both model and rule bloat. There are many unnecessary units, rules, systems, and codices to such a point that the whole thing needs to be thrown out and restarted.

If I had the power I'd-

>Scrap all rules
>Create a special rules department. No more 'this guy writes one codex, another guy writes another codex, etc'. Everything is standardized and written by the same team for maximum balance.
>Cut all fluff and art from the codices. Rename them simple "Rulebooks" and make them free.
>Split the game and excise escalation/apocalypse from 40k. All 40k games will be at skirmish level, 1,500 points or lower with nothing bigger than a Leman Russ legal.
>Anything bigger than 1.5k points is apocalypse. Apocalypse has no balance and is the "fuck it play with everything in the kitchen sink" game meant for players with large collections.
>Codices are now high production lore and artbooks. They are released very rarely, while rulebooks are updated automatically. These are the chief sources for knowledge of the universe.
>Get rid of the start-and-go campaigns and "chaos will kill everybody" bullshit, and instead create a living campaign that never stops.
>Living campaign is like the old 13th Black Crusade Campaign and others. Players report results online, leading to conclusions. These campaigns are never super critical to the fate of the entire setting, but can decide the fate of characters, systems, and sectors. The results will be acknowledged in later material or may even have novels written about them, and player's armies may even be canonized, such as custom marine chapters or regiments.

All you have to do is not give up at the first sign of difficulty. A lot of fellows will try something amazing like Darklands but not make it past the initial stages because of its relative unfamiliarity in terms of how it asks you to engage with it. Its a great example of an excellent CRPG because your imagination is still a major part, where more modern games (even some considered holy classics around here) do all the imagining for you.

Another thing I advise is to be honest with yourself and accept when a game isn't your bag. There are several excellent CRPGs that are recommended here that I don't like. Even if its the most lauded classic in the world, be honest with your feelings and don't let yourself be convinced that you have to like it or that you are obliged to play it through to the end just becasue of its classic status or its importance to the genre (which it can possesses regardless of weather you or I enjoy it or not).

My third piece of advice is to start with a game that appeals to you visually. You don't have to start with the best. Climbing Everest is one of this heights of mountaineering but no one starts there and if they did they wouldn't appreciate it. Start with something that looks like it will spark your imagination a little. Then when you play it you can see if its mechanisms are a match for you. This is to fins a place that is comfortable for you to start with, establishing a comfort zone, if you like. It will be a baseline you can branch out from. I would never reccomend old school Pool of Radiance to anyone right away, but its something you can easily fall into as a result of enjoying other games; from a position of legitimate curiosity about an older style rather than a sense of obligation.

How would you run a campaign based on Shin Megami Tensei ? (The main SMT series, no Persona fags allowed)

Savage Worlds probably. Pre-stat all the demons, but let players choose their own characters.

Battles feature one player playing as their character, and the other players as their demons.

Thoughts?
>>
>>51449234
If you're talking about mechanics, then a game based on shin megami tensei would be impossible, as the combat systems in the game are entirely designed around being a video game. I guess you could "capture the feeling" of the game, but then you'd just end up like those awful people who try and shove terrible souls games ideas like their being clever. The game isn't different story wise than most role-playing settings, early DnD was mostly mythological in scope with players fighting with Thor and Odin, etc. The only difference is that SMT might trigger atheists by having a true God, although aside from the Anarchy ending of SMT IV Final I think the plot line of false God and real God fighting has been abandoned by the story writers. Really, any game based off of a video game is just going to be terrible; all I would recommend is taking inspiration from SMT and not trying to replicate it.

I saw an anon post this in another thread awhile back. How would /tg/ suggest one go about this idea? I assume the best setting for this madness would be modern day, and shadow people make good villains, as do satanists, globalists, and anyone else there are conspiracy theories about.

Help me out, let the imagination run wild. I know some people that would love to play in such a game. I almost feel motivated enough to make a rulebook or something, but for now I'm trying to get things nailed down. Ideas to follow.

So first of all, reptillians are a well-known trope in the area of insane conspiracy theories. They would make a fun player race due to their shape-shifting ability, except they'd also make a perfect villain race.

At any rate, their powers would naturally be that they can disguise themselves easily, with the drawback that they must consume blood and/or human brains to sustain their lives. Not sure what other powers they'd get, but an additional drawback could be that they don't like the cold.

Maybe being too out-in-the-open with their powers leads to a White Wolf breaking the masquerade situation?

>I assume the best setting for this madness would be modern day, and shadow people make good villains, as do satanists, globalists, and anyone else there are conspiracy theories about.
I think there is a slight difference between what you said and what the picture in your post was aiming for.

Theres a difference between a fantasy world where all the details like races or how magic works are inspired by insane conspiracy theories and just our real world except the most batshit conspiracy theories are true.

Though honestly I like both concepts.
>>
>>51448655
Yeah, I'm cognizant of this fact, but I'm not sure which one I like better.

The modern world has lots of exploitability, but also restrictions. A fantastic world inspired by conspiracy theories could be explosively entertaining and fresh, but I'm not sure I know of enough ridiculous shit that doesn't rely on modern technology and in addition you'd have to figure out what the tone would be. Imo, even if the game is humorous the world needs some consistency of its own.
