Hey

I ran a dubs contest a littke over a month ago and the winning post wanted lady here to be gray all over.

I think it came out alright, this was my first real experience with nmm and the whole model was done with just three colors: black, white and gray. A cool exercise!

I don't think the model really suits being grey all over, but sure.

Reminds me of...

I really like surreal, sometimes escheresque environments like in this image, Monument Valley, Kill Six Billion Demons (that for the surrealness not really the Escher stuff) and such, as a concept, but I feel like I can't properly convey the bizzareness of them as a GM.

Does anybody have any tips on how to do so? Is it a case of less is more with description? Have you had a GM who pulled off the concept well, and if so how did they do it?
33 posts and 14 images submitted.
>>
>>51481382
I share your sentiment fully.

For good examples of surreal environments in fantasy, read Roger Zelazny, in particular The Chronicles of Amber cycle. You're gonna get the hang of it after finishing the books, I guarantee it.

Or else you can take the Lovecraft route and describe how mind-boggling the place is instead of going into detail regarding what makes it so mind-boggling. It works too. Actually, you should combine a little bit of both.

Less is more is probably the golden rule for environment descriptions in general, because your players aren't reading a book and they're not ready to listen to you for hours on end, even if your flavour text is really good.
>>
>>51481731
Cool, I'll check out the Chronicles of Amber.

I guess just hinting at weirdness lets the player fill in the gaps with what they fins weird.
>>
>>51482380
Just saying "it's weird, man, ain't gonna explain shit" lets the player fill the gaps with absolutely nothing. You need to provide some basic descriptive points, so that the image may crystallise around them.

Of course, each of our campaigns has the obligatory beach or hot springs session.

These are otherwise completely normal DnD campaigns, and even during the aforementioned sessions we do normal stuff rather than wacky anime hijinks. We just always include one of them for laughs.

We had one in the Nanoha game I'm playing in.

Of course, in addition to showing off swimsuits and relaxing on the beach, we also ended up investigating hidden ancient ruins and fighting/rescuing a slightly mad ancient AI. That was fun.

Has /tg/ any experience on minimal/simple tabletop rpg systems? such as: Savage Worlds, Dungeon World, FATE, RISUS, Apocalypse World, Simple System..

What did you like about it and did you find something lacking?
159 posts and 12 images submitted.
>>
I appreciate the simplicity in design of light and ultralight RPGs, but personally the lack of substance always wears thin after extended play, they only really work for me for short campaigns or oneshots.

The lack of character distinction is the big thing, for me. I like different characters within the same system to be mechanically distinct- It's not just fluff or roleplay, there is a real, tangible difference in how their mechanics work and how they play from one another.

Lighter games often don't bother with this, giving you very simple, universal mechanics that are essentially the same for everyone with flavour differences being the key thing. PbtA is one that particularly suffers from this for me. I love the idea of Moves, the design elegance is beautiful, but at the end of the day you roll the same dice in the same basic way for literally everything and it just loses its sheen real fast.
>>
>>51457055
Dungeon World and Apocalypse World are no where enar as simple as as savage world or Fate
>>
>>51457077
>moves are the same mechanically thus boring
Do you get upset that everyone in DnD rolls a d20 to attack, check skills and make save throws?

Anyone else play a little fast and loose with the timing for using survival actions?

Secondly, its one use for each survival action per set of turns, resetting on the monster turn, or per turn (allowing you to surge on the monster turn and once on the survivors turn)?
>>
>>51421471
In what way? I've found being able to move between flows is sufficient to let me do most of what I want in the game. My biggest problem is running out of survival more than anything else.

First one. You get your surge back at the beginning of the monster turn. You don't get a second one on the survivor turn.

No, but Jesus Christ, you just reminded me of my favorite part of VtM Bloodlines.

The image of Andrei crank calling a late-night radio station is amazing. I can imagine him sitting back in his chair made of people, looking through his phone book made of people, sipping blood from people that's in a chalice made from people, picking up his phone (which is not made from people, how would that even work) and daintily dialing the numbers with his long, thin-fingered hands and long nails, and settling back down, ready for a nice pleasant distraction in order to ensure that his unlife does not become monotonous and, by extension, inefficient.

We had this thread before and some good ideas came out of it.

So What were some misconceptions or notions you had as a kid, have you ever used them to inspire lore for a game?

As for myself, I just believed prairie dogs were actually small dogs and wondered why nobody kept them as pets.

Some gems from the last thread: >>51443124

>I believed that every time you opened a door, there was a chance it would open to Hell, or just to darkness. Like, 999,999 times out of 1,000,000 you'd be okay. But there was always a chance you'd just die and be damned forever.

>When I was little an older kid told me that dwarfs/gnomes existed and they had shotguns that they would fire through peoples window at night, and told me that his grandma was killed by them.

>My parents always told me never to go into the old factory near where we lived because it was a "deathtrap". Misunderstood and thought that meant that a thing called Deathtrap lived there and killed anyone who came in, only strengthened my belief when some teenager managed to set himself on fire when trying to arson the place, thought there was a fire demon or something hiding in there.

Had a fear of leaving my arms hanging off the side of the bed. The threat was from rats violently pouring out of the ceiling air-conditioner, smashing into the ground and rising rapidly into the roof, forming a wall of rats that surrounded every side of my bed.

I had to keep my hands on the bed or they would eat my arms.

What do I name a village of necromancers?

This is in the Marsh of Desolation in Eberron. Everyone is a necromancer to some degree and they use the dead as servants/laborers but children like to decorate them with flowers and veils (for the smell).

It's much like the Bayou but with more skeleton motif.

I just received this notification and I don't even know what to think. I've played some good tabletop adaptations of games before, but a fucking gimmick shooter like SUPERHOT?

I enjoyed the game but... Fuck. Is this a step too far?

What videogames adapted to tabletop have actually been good? The XCOM boardgame was fucking great, and the Pillars of Eternity card game was surprisingly fun. Any particularly bad ones you're aware of, or ones that might be more appropriate for adaptation than this bizarre bullshit?

Adrenaline is a doomesque FPS simulator. Seems pretty cool, generic theme but has some obvious inspirations.

All in all, I'm generally sceptical against cross-media adaptations. They usually try too hard to emulate their counterparts. XCOM didn't which is why I think it was pretty good.

While not strictly based off of any one particular game, Battle at Kemble's Cascade is in my opinion a really underappreciated game that tries to emulate those scrolling retro space shooters.
>>
>>51496873

I agree totally. The ones that try to emulate what the vidya do just end up as pale imitations. It's only things which take an alternate perspective and properly make use of the tabletop medium which end up being good.

Which is why I have such low hopes for the clunky generic dungeon crawler they're making with the fucking Dark Souls license. Of course it sold like hotcakes because of the miniatures, but fuck it's so mechanically derivative.
