That's cause pirate patches are cheaper. Who wants to waste a few extra cents on some 'murican's eyeball? Not the 'murican megacorps, that's who. More seriously, there's a bunch of reasons to use "pirate" or "medical" patches depending on the nature and severity of the problem, so maybe you've just rolled the odds on not encountering the latter.

So... there's a chance I can get my hopes up that they'll make core 40k something that's actually fun to play besides Kill Team only to have my hopes shattered like a perfectly recreated porcelain replica of a Lemann Russ model thrown against a brick wall?

How do I write up a character? From just tips to the proper form would be great.

>>
>>51497680

Keep it brief, and include only the most relevant and important elements. Describe things naturally (don't be That Guy who says things like "Yeah, he looks like a Charisma 16") and clearly.

If you want more detail to your character you can do two versions of the write-up, with the brief one being for describing the character to the other players, and the detailed one for later reference if needed. If you have something in your background you want the DM to use you can pass that to them seperately.

don't do lengthy backstories, nobody gives a shit about your lengthy backstory

try to define your character in terms of relationships rather than merely characteristics; i.e. is he friends with the paladin, does he admire the rogue's free spirit, does he hate the wizard because he fears his magical powers

embrace the fact that your character will change and become something you did not envision him being at session 0

your character is a member of a group (presumably); try to envision him not just as an individual, but as a member of that group. Is he a leader? A follower?

connect your character to the lore of the universe. If you're running Shadowrun, for instance, and I'm the GM, I have a lot more to work with if you say, "My character used to be addicted to sims" than if you say "My character is a lone wolf"

the way you describe your character should generate narrative hooks and interesting storytelling opportunities. don't think of him as a collection of statistics that you will use to overcome challenges and collect loot; instead, think of him as a character in a novel/book/whatever who does interesting things and grows in interesting ways. try to make problems for your character. The FFG star wars system (which is kind of a shitty system but w/e) has this built-in: your character has "troubles" that kick in. Does your character have gambling debts? Is he on the run from the law? Does he suffer from an illness and is searching for the cure before it takes his life? These sorts of descriptions give your character things to actually do, they give your GM ideas for side quests and shit.

also this guy is right, if you do write a lengthy background, give it to your DM, not the other players.

like i said, other players don't wanna read your shit. but the DM might look through your character's history and say, "that's cool, I'll write up some plot hooks about that." And then when those plot hooks come up, your character can explain to the other characters, "oh yeah, last time I was in town I fathered a child and I've never met him. hope i don't meet him lol"

that in-character exchange and revelation is way better than handing fellow players a mini-novel

also, remember that the stories that half a dozen people come up with organically will almost always be more interesting than the story you sat and wrote out before. the whole point of tabletop gaming is that you collaborate to tell a story; if you just want to tell a story you've already written, well, what are the other players there for

So sort of groups or individuals that make the weapons of death in your setting like? Are they just there to shit out whatever weapon the PCs need at the time? Are they reveared sorts with a legend all their own?

Do they have specific philosophies that go into their weapons?

>>
>>51497225
Low magic fantasy setting. Also I'm a bit of a history/anthropology nerd. So usually there aren't people who specifically make weapons. Smiths spend most of their time making a wide variety of tools. There's no one guy just shitting out slings all day for the four shepherds in his area that need them. Preindustrial settings shouldn't have much in the way of that kind of specialization.

Also, shit's on commission. More so the further from a market you are. More so the fewer of a thing is really needed (so it's more likely for tool heads than for swords or armor). More so the more it needs to be specific to the purchaser (there's not a bunch of adjustable armor on the shelf, nor sizes from S to XXL in case blubber knight and spear waif show up). Because retail is a modern and exceptional arrangement and not the historical norm.
>>
>>51497225

Depending on the area really. In the kitchen sink asian area most smiths are independent sorts who's names and reputations carry a great deal of weight such that their students may or may not be stuck with certain clients because their weapons are almost exclusively associated with a particular noble family and the last thing they want is one of their swords in the hands of some barbarians making them look bad or starting an incident among the other kingdoms such that the Emperor has to get involved.

Otherwise you might have the pariah sort of smiths who if you go and get some fucked up materials for them will make some crazy weapons for you like dragging the corpse of an ogre and forging weapons with their bones, skin, and horns.
>>
>>51497225
For private work, big cities have guilds of weaponsmiths and armorsmiths. At the capital, the last argument about which one should produce spiked bucklers led to 13 deaths.

The empire mass-produces munition-quality armor, mostly lamellar, spears, crossbows and axes. Things have to work, be cheap, as interchangeable as possible and storable.

I have no legendary weaponmaker except for the God of Labor himself. Although his clerics claim he didn't produce that sword the folks use as bridge at the division betwen Ametis and Caledon.

Does anyone ever get tired of when the DM tries to throw in half-assed racism into a setting?

Example: Imagine stock setting A has elves and dwarves, and they are supposed to be racists towards each other in all of the setting notes

>Elf in party
>Runs into an encampment of dwarves
>Random, no-name NPC dwarf says "ugh, elves. I hate those guys." and gives elf some gruff
>They meet with the leader
>Leader literally doesn't care that an elf is there and lets them go on the quest
>When they get back, everyone loves the heroes and nobody remembers the no-name NPC who gave elfy some gruff.

Why did you even include the idea that dwarves and elves are assholes to each other if you aren't even going to roll with it? Either just say that elves get along perfectly normal, or have the dwarves actually do shit like refuse to converse with any party that has an elf or even allow them to cross the road.

Why does this half-assed narrative still continue?

I feel you.

The worst example of this is "designated dindus", usually beastmen or orcs. Yeah, yeah, they're Noble Savages enslaved by Strawman Empire despite being physically/magically superior, everyone treats them like shit despite them doing nothing to warrant that, etc. etc.

In best cases this becomes a soapbox for GM/author to rant about how capitalism/communism/ideology author doesn't like is EVIL and men are THE TRUE MONSTERS.

In worst case, the designated dindu race is attractive to author and it's blatant waifushit / mental wank.
>>
I'm really tired of elf-dwarf hatred in general, feels like it just needs to be there because someone else did it.
>>
>>51492179
This is the worst.

I don't mind it when authors use fantasy to explore broader social issues. I like weightier fare.

What I don't like is when the author has absolutely no tact or grace and just falls back on Human Empire bullies the Noble Savages. At best it's trite, at worst it's patronizing and racist.

Scenario: The PCs are trapped in a room with a group of imprisoned but djinn.
These djinn are not yet bound to serve or grant wishes when freed.
The only method of escape is to free one of the djinn and trust that they will assist and not harm you.
Assume that any PC "sense motive" roll fails or are not applicable.
How do you, the GM, indicate which of the various djinn might be trustworthy, without making it obvious?

Pic mildly related as a group of individuals one might get the wrong impression of.

It feels like Bretonnia gets questioned a bunch, but bear with me:

In the real world Middle Ages, most people weren't literate. But just about anyone who joined the church could end up learning a few words, or at least how to transcribe texts, right? And you might also get a few artists, and people skilled with architecture, in the same vein. And eventually universities would pop up - I don't know quite when, but sometime around the 12th century with the growth of cities.

Now, Bretonnia doesn't really have a noble class interested in the arts (beyond the bardic tradition), with more a focus on martial prowess. But the peasants, aside from merchants, are usually rural and not up to getting a proper education. So who acts as the artists and writers and architects? There's no single religious organization with a strong enough presence to act as a focal point for accumulated knowledge, and there's not enough urban development and peasant freedom to make universities feasible.
>>
>>51466139
Sons of the city peasants, mostly. Cities are a lot more free and liberal than villages, especially the port cities. Art is actually one of the ways a peasant can rise in noble estimations; I think the Mousillon splat mentions that tapestry weaving is one such art.
>>
>>51466139
>Universities
I think Brettonia more relies on the old "master->apprentice" style training rather than formal learning institutions.

>Writers
I think these would mostly be the more erudite nobles. Think samurai and their obsession with poems. Your classic knight-nobles will all learn the basics of writing and running a fief, because they need to keep an eye on the peasants to make sure they arent ripped off. Some will go further and be more like warrior-poets or bards.

As for who mkaes the books? Well, they seem more of an "Oral traditions" culture than a "writing stuff down" culture. I imagine bards and storytellers are how most information is recorded, with the odd story written down by hand by the occaisional very organised bard.

Beyond that, you would end up with the "merchant class" in the cities, peasants who learn to make things/perform tasks for the nobles rather than work in the fields. Still "peasants", just not digging in fields.

>artists
Scultpures and Jewelery etc would probably mostly be made by families specialised in the crafts.

>Architects
As above, but most likely families of stonemasons who went to the next level, and then passed their skills on to apprentices etc.

You don't need an organised church to get this stuff. But it helps.

I just ran Cold Dead Hand from Unspeakable Oath #23 for my group and they really liked it. It's not a "typical" CoC scenario (the PCs are part of a very well armed Spetznaz battalion, complete with APCs) so it might set a weird example for new players but it's a very good scenario.
