Hey all, one of my friends is going to be running a pathfinder game soon and I've heard mixed messages about the system. I'm used to playing D&D 5th edition and so far it seems a lot more crunchy but generally the same. My main question is for character creation. Is it really as unbalanced as people say here or is it just a meme? We are probably going to be playing at the lower levels are there certain classes that I should avoid?

Tired of chivalrous knights in plate and mail atop destriers, fighting for the honor of King Whoeverthefuck III? Why not get crazy with the Komnenians?

Kataphraktoi clad in lamellar wielding bow and lance, fighting back the invading nomadic orcish warg-archers and their newfound religious fervor. Assassinations and intrigue in the court as aristocrats barely tolerate each other and are practically in open warfare. Great fire breathing ships fighting the hydras of the Imperial Sea!

Have you folks ever set a game in a more eastern medieval setting? I fell like it's criminally underutilized. The Basileia tôn Rhōmaiōn of the High Middle Ages really seems perfect inspiration for a fantasy setting and game, with a long lasting and once mighty empire slowly being beaten back and seeming to be in its final years. The aesthetics alone would be refreshing, with more wide open plains and eastern weaponry and tactics being seen. Yet at the same time it's so much of a crossroads pretty much any culture and item could be found in some measure, giving great variety for the players to choice from.

What do you guys think, any ideas? Stories? Character or setting art? I'll start with some art.

The baatezu of the Nine Hells, in collaboration with the yugoloths of Gehenna, have concocted a nefarious scheme to sway mortals towards law and evil.

Many desperate are to be given "binding rods." These rods can project Silent Images of an illustrated catalogue of the unique devils of Baator. Whenever the mortal willingly commits a major act of law and/or evil (with neither chaos nor good), the rod gains a single charge. A rod can hold unlimited charges.

A charge can be expended to permanently conjure and planar-bind a lesser aspect of one of the unique, powerful devils of the Nine Hells! The aspect serves the mortal faithfully, and if captured or killed, will reform in a binding circle in the mortal's home. There are some catches:
• Which aspect is conjured is completely randomized. You might receive an aspect of mighty Mephistopheles or even Asmodeus himself. You could get an aspect of a beautiful she-devil like Zariel, Fierna, Glasya, Baalphegor, or Lilith, whose artwork in the catalogue looks so enticing! Or you could be stuck with an aspect of one of the rubbish Rabble of Devilkin, like Cahor or Rumjal, whom you have probably never heard of before. Obviously, the more desirable aspects are much rarer than the forgettable ones.
• The rod projects a Silent Image "spinning wheel of fortune" animation to show you JUST how close you were to getting that aspect you wanted.
• You can have only four aspects active at any given time. The rest are kept in temporal stasis in the binding circle at home. You must return to this circle to swap around your active aspects.
• You can wind up with duplicate aspects.

On the bright side...
• You can meditate upon the rod daily for a quest! These are small, generic missions to commit a minor act of law and/or evil. Fulfilling a daily quest bestows a small boon.
• Meditating upon the rod daily for an entire month gives bonus charges at the end of the month, even if you failed to complete daily quests.
