Has your party ever been betrayed by a long time friend of theirs? Either NPC or PC.

I have posted this story a while ago, but here it is again.

So when I was just starting off in tabletop roleplay, me and my friends were having a great time. One of my friends, the DM, had this 'friend' who just sort of clung on him. His name was John, and he basically invited himself to our game. Everyone, me included, was alright with it as long as he wasn't a shit. Since I am telling this story on a thread like this, you know that was not the case. His first character was a warforged warlord. He didn't particularly care for logic or leadership as he claimed, instead electing to fuck an elderly lady after busting down her wall. Now, I thought he was just getting his randomness out since this was his first time playing; all of the group was guilty of this when they started as well, DM included.

But, the behavior didn't stop. Everywhere we went, he either broke something or tried to fuck it with his 'Specially crafted add-on'. After everyone got tired of this, the DM took him aside. I don't know what was said, but after that happened, John was now Co-DM. I'll explain that later. So, we finish the session we were in. Next session, John's sentient sex-bot 'mysteriously' touches an evil artifact. An ancient vampire lord turns him into a vampire for some reason, and whisks him away. After our characters mourn his loss for a second they do what they were doing before that.

Now enters John's second character: Creed. He was a shadowborn rogue, and ticked almost every stereotypical 'Shitty Rogue' architype you could think of except for trying to kill the party. Introduced this character after throwing Stitches at us. Stitches was a clown/juggalo edgelord with planet busting demonic powers who also happens to be Creed's brother. Guess who dreams of being a juggalo IRL? Go ahead, I am waiting... John you say? What would give you that impression?
>>
>>55116014
Cont.
So this juggalo shitter (Which I later discovered wasn't even an original idea, being 'inspired' by a fucking Netflix tier movie also called Stitches) throws a Balor at our low level party. The actual DM had to step in and Deus Ex Machina us out of that shit, and really looked disappointed.

Creed was worse than the warforged he made. He was just as sexual, but now was edgy as fuck, and given godly abilities from the DM. Before saying shit about the DM, please read to the end. So even with all the power that was bestowed upon him, things like a god form and infinite summonable assassins from a shadow guild, he still fucking sucked at everything. When we were on a secret mission to get Intel from a holy place, he does one of the following. Can you guess what it was?

A. Goes in sneakily and does what a rogue should fucking do.
B. Exclaims how religion is the for retards besides having a GOD form from MARRYING A GOD.
C. Fucking kills the setting equivalent of the Pope in broad daylight in front of thousands of churchgoers

Sorry, that was a trick question. It is both B and C.

Much later, he plays an NPC for the DM while his character is doing stuff. This NPC was supposed to guide us and be our friend through a strange land. He sucks at this job, and we get through by the skins of our teeth. We get to the artifact to beat our BBEG, but BBEG takes it first. He does the whole 'Join me' schtick, and guess who fucking walks over and sides with the fucker? Yup, the NPC being played by John. Our DM has had it at this point, so when we kill that fucking NPC, the DM not only does not stop it, he has the BBEG also kill the traitor since traitors can't be trusted.

That session was the last we saw of John.

Now for the part I learned after everything went down.

If you don't wana read the pic-related story (which doesn't actually have the betrayal part), it basically boils down the typical "I was just raising you as a replacement body" plot twist.

Or at least that's how it was supposed to go, but in the end the affection ended up going both ways and he couldn't do it after everything she gone through trying to save him.

I like psionics in certain settings.

DnD, or typical "swords and magic" fantasy isn't one of them, unless there's really solid lore behind it like in Dark Sun. The fact that Mystic is a thing in regular DnD 5e kinda bothers me a little because it feels so different and out-of-place compared to the other classes... and because people use them as the "create-an-anime-character class.

As much as I hate to admit it though, their "magic" system is 100 times better than the Vancian system sacred-cow garbage all the other casters still use. But I still rather all those other casters use it and Mystic/Psionic not even be a thing.

I refuse to run them in any of my 40k armies and I have no idea why, considering I play imperials, chaos, and xenos. I usually pick groups that hate them to base my forces off of as well.

I dunno, there's something oddly satisfying about watching someone casting crazy ass warp magic imbued with the power of hell get dropped by some chump guardsman with a lasgun.

I guess I just really love watching those smarmy pysker spammers from 7th get their asses kicked by the best spell of all, gun.

I like the idea of someone dropping humanity for something only slightly powerful albiet infinitely more fun.

It's also an underappreciated life. There really needs to he a system in place just for psykers/psionics. Having literal nightmare monsters appear to fuck shit up, you looking like a hellraiser cyborg.

Very underappreciated. All for the right reasons. He'll even I didn't really care about them but now I have an appreciation for their body gore aesthetic

So, help me figure something out here /tg/;

I'm puzzled as to how combat developed around the evolution of armor, and how would this play out in a setting.

See, we can all pretty much armor technology has evolved right alongside mankind's history of warfare. But for most of that course we stuck to mostly the same weapon designs.

While padded armor went to leather scales, then to boiled leather pads, then full lboiled and hardedned leather armor with bronze or copper scales sewn in and all the way up to steel armor, weapon designs however stayed the same. In other words, armor evolved but we mostly stuck with variations of the same designs of swords and axes.

Now, this makes us assume swords, axes, spears, hell, maybe wooden clubs are even more devastating than they appear, that's the hell why people are always one-upping their armor while they keep using the weapons that are working. Right? Right? But hey, then I see a bunch of youtube videos where HEMA guys are testing out how tought is simple, old leather armor. and then they proceed to hit a 5mm thick leather vest, plain raw leather, with a two handed axe, and it not only catches the blade but the foam bellow only walks away with a scratch.

A goddamn 10mm thick buffalo hide (siminar to the early european aurochs), boiled and hardened, and cut into complete upper body armor, could resist and bounce full on sword and axe blows with superficial marks to the surface. The same armor also catches a javelin with minor penetration.

o now I'm thinking, ok, maybe spears, swords and axes weren't such overkill and maybe early armor didn't suck so much. But then why the fuck did armor keep evolving?

So now, here is my actual question. With all this in mind, how the hell did combat itself evolve around the fact that armor technology was improving at a fast-pace, while weapon design technology was moving as a much slower pace. Since even early armor already proved itself eficient in protecting the owner for weapon blows, then how did the warriors adapt to combat their better suited enemies with less than effective weapons?

I can imagine two shirtless barbarians hacking at each other with swords until one manages to land a light blow, then another, then another, then a moderate one, and another, and another and another until a few minutes later he is hacking away at the other guy. But I can't imagine two hypotetical roman era gladiators clad in full boiled studded leather armor, just standing there and trading blows over and over and over again hoping that they are the first to make it through the other man's armor after 30 minuter of hacking away at the same place.

And fuck no, I can't see two knights just punching the crap out of each other or beating themselves until one of them passes out from dehydration like we see on that "Polish Medieval MMA" shit on youtube.

Then how did it all play down? Did warriors start using the conventional weapons as a means to parry and tire the enemy, then would deliver the death blow with some other specialized weapon like a tri-edged dagger or a laser witch sword, shit, or would they after a while resort to muay thai'ng the other guy in the face hoping that his helmet would fall off so that you could hit him with an axe.

That's the kind of thing I shit I wanna know, basically.
>>
>>55115176
There are weapons that were specifically designed to defeat armor. What you want is a long handle for leverage, a small point for the most pressure on impact, and a lot of mass at the head for the most energy. Hammers, halberds, maces, and even staves are all known for their ability to crush steel plate and cause debilitating wounds to those wearing it, even through chain and padding.

As for two armored opponents in a "duel" scenario, which was exceedingly rare outside of sporting scenarios, you would likely see the two combatants trying to close to grapple range in order to use a small sword or dagger to slide under the helmet or into an exposed joint.
>>
>>55115176
Something you have to remember is that weapons are extraordinarily basic. Weapons are essentially one of three things.
Sharp pointy thing.
Heavy blunt thing.
Edged sharp thing.

Even arrows and bullets are just fast pointy thing. When armor started catching on was when people realized that if you have something between you and one of those three things, it hurt less. Armor technology only developed as fast as the technology to make it. gunpowder was the result of a taist practicing extrenal alchemy - once it was realized it could propel things, then armor was developed to counter that too. But the main thing is that weapons could be modified to punch through armor, but in the end, there are really only three weapons on earth.
Sharp pointy thing.
Heavy blunt thing.
Edged sharp thing.

All armor is created to mitigate those three facts.

That said, it's an older system showing its age. It's fun, but clunky and badly organized. Still, you can have naturally occurring psionics, get them from implants or even take a class with so many psionetic implants they go insane.

Plus there's borgs, from "guy with retractable, color changing hair" to GitS style "hidden borgs" to towering brain-in-a-bot warmachines.

A.R.C.H.I.E. 3 is a rogue AI whose plans for global conquest are on hold while it staves off endless alien invasions trying to take the planet that it so rightly deserves.

Plus dimensional portals keep dumping demons, bug aliens, dragons, gods, nanoplagues and everything else all over.
>>
In Stars Without Number, all of those can come into play. Although, psionics in the game are more natural than man made. It still contains all those gizmos for cybernetics and AI. Hell, for psychics there are pretech artifacts that amplify the powers of their users. There are rules for making AI and aliens. If you want to find more about the game, there are a ton of little free add-ons and pdfs. It is a sandbox system after all. Also good taste.

We have observed your city and we are impressed with your craftsmanship and artistic skill. However we must question your decision to limit your technological capacity to pre-industrial means. This sounds good, but maybe just force the characters to describe their blows

If its two PC's, they'll probably have enough health or AC to shrug off or outright dodge most incoming attacks, so you'll have plenty to describe.
Reward players for describing shit in a way that sounds cool, but not too gary stu or whatever, like he accepts his limits
Build a narrative, have a story, its fucken roleplaying

Well not really but I would be grateful for your help.

I've been working on a setting and I need you guys to do what you do best.

The basic premise is that FTL drives are incredibly finicky things. If you operate an electronic device (say a smart phone) near one it will screw the telemetry and fire you into a planet. So if you're aboard or near a spaceship the best you can do is 1960s technology.

How do these ships function?
What's it like?
What quirks can you think of?

>How do these ships function?
I'd imaging like any hard sci-fi before they try to jump and they just have to powerdown for a while before going to or coming out of FTL.

>What's it like?
You'd have to jump some distance away from your destination because the elecromagnetic interference could fuck you up and you'd always have to slow approach (making ambushes impossible for combat and always give a defender tech advantage or way to screen traffic)

>What quirks can you think of?
Some areas of space are so "loud in electromagnetic disturbance you have to circum-navigate them in very specific routes or potentially kill yourself.
Also local phenomena like solar flares or gamma rays could block travel to places for months at a time.
>>
>>55112547
Thanks anon.

I would like to ask some more questions.

>how might space combat work?
You're having to aim by mark one eyeball, use radar maybe. Gunnery is I think going to have to be good old fashioned battleship cannons or missiles that are fired before "waking up."

>life aboard ship
I'm thinking the FTL drive is going to involve a lot of complex mirrors and periscopes to monitor the thing.

Everything is going to be pretty labour intensive too. I'm not sure if biological computing is a thing here. I'm messing with the idea of idiot savants being cloned for calculations.
>>
>>55112430
Well, I would imagine that all of the critical locations would be locked inside a Faraday Cage, in order to arrest any electromagnetic radiation that could interfere with the drive. I would say that you would likely have to do the same thing with the whole ship. Laser transmissions would likely be an important way to pass data, as there is a more directed way to transmit data, which would enable communications without having all of it blocked out by shielding. Smaller, commercial or even personal craft likely could not afford this outside of the largest vessels. Something that could take form would be having larger, Guild Heighliner-like vessels that have large, shielded cargo bays that can transport ships possibly for ludicrous sums, or crawling across star systems at sublight.

I'm preparing a campaign that has the players playing as FBI agents in the early thirties. By pure chance, the vast majority of the cases they find themselves involved in have supernatural causes and unbelievable explanations that their bosses higher up the chain of command begrudgingly accept. Eventually, if they live long enough, they'll end up being some of the first members of something dealing with things like the X-files. I'm trying to get the tone to where there isn't ever a point where someone can clearly and comfortably say "Well, it is obviously a monster, and we'll do X Y Z to defeat it". I'd much rather things work like Kolchak, a show where a journalist reports on the strange and ends up solving the problem in a conventionally unreasonable way (you stopped murders by pouring salt in the mouth of a dead body? No way) and ending up having only a story that belongs in the back pages of the paper he works for.

Anyways, if anyone has some scraps of ideas for mysteries these guys could delve into, I'd love to hear them.

I can only recycle Kolchak episodes for so long.

I like the idea of tactical team games, but a lot of them are either hard to get in to or are very expensive.

I was thinking about making a game like "watered-down" Kingdom Death, meets Final Fantasy Tactics.

Something where four players can choose what class and subclass they want to play as, then battle monsters, earn treasure for slaying them and gradually power up.

If I were to make such a game, where would be a good place to start? I want to make something that can be played by printing out a PDF, writing characters in index cards, and keeping a deck of cards for the monsters you'll fight.

Anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

This is unironically the best answer. Just make players have more than one character and have fun.
>>
>>55112088
This is a good starting point, actually. I might just build off 4e as a base and work until it's not recognizable.

>Simplify character sheets to make them just a bare-bones stat block.
>Build a deck of possible actions for monsters. Then build a "treasure" deck.
>Create a few class cards that have primary and secondary abilities. "Warrior" instead of Fighter, and "Black Mage" instead of warlock.
>Last, fiddle with the math, then reapply dice so that the game can be played with d6 if I want to.

Tah-dah! You have Dungeon Fantasy: Tactics!
