Have you ever encountered a player or a GM who actually liked to track an RPG's lighting (bright light, darkness, concealment, etc.) mechanics?
>>51610030
No. Which is why I always quietly laugh at "this race is better because it has darkvision" argument.
>>51610049
To be fair, "this race is better because it has darkvision" has merit.
If the GM dislikes tracking lighting mechanics, then everything in that dark dungeon or cave will be in pitch black darkness, save for that one little radius of torchlight the party brings in.
I do it as a Shadowrun GM. There's a table in the back of the book that I refer to every time combat happens.
Not that it matters when the street sam can see in ultrasound and radar and half the team has thermographic goggles.
Stat him, /tg/.
>>51609693
Literally who? You can't stat something you have never heard of.
Oh wait, I got you covered.

How the fuck does it work.
if CR > average party level, then it is very challenging
if CR = average part level, then it is an average challenge
if CR < average party level, then it will be an easy challenge
this assumes a single monster, facing a party of 4-5
a larger party diminishes challenge , more monsters increases the challenge
>>51609464
Yea but if you have a standard party of 4 adventures and you throw them them 8 goblins the party will own them. On the other hand 6 wolves can shit on that party all day.
>>51609443
In all honesty it doesn't.
I'd go as far to say it can be detrimental. I've watched my players chewing through cr lvl10+ then I thrown a CRlvl with an odd rule or resistance at them and they're fucked.
My biggest peeve with DnD is how there's nothing that's good at hitting that doesn't hit for huge damage.
One of my players is running around with an AC of 23 buffed and all attackers get disadvantage on him. Only things that can realistically hit him are CR lvl 15+ and if they do hit him they will kill him in one.
Can you have classic fantasy without designated "bad guys"?
No chaotic evil orcs, no lawful evil drow. You can have assholes and monsters, but no sentient "always evil" races, while still exploring dungeons, raiding tombs and high adventure.
Yes you can.
What is Sword & Sorcery, anon?
>>51609546
You mean the subgenre? I don't think I've encountered it much, I read mostly sci-fi
>>51609412
Well, it depends on your definition of bad guys.
There ought to be opposition. Monsters are almost a must, too. Unless your player characters have some sort of special position in the grand scheme of things, there will probably some factions out there that are always more or less hostile towards them.
Anyone creating their own game? Whether pen & paper, card, board, or other.
Share thoughts and stories.
There are two other threads about homebrewing, /gdg/ (game dev general) and someone else who missed that there's a /gdg/.
Not that I complain, I'd rather have 3 homebrew threads than 3 more D&D/WH40k/stat me threads.
I have like 3-4 projects in my mind. Since I have free time now, I'll probably start on one of them.
>Soulsborne/Soul Calibur inspired combat system using cards
>Picking up and coding a working version of a cardgame that is going defunct
>Homebrewing alternative rulesets for Strike! (4e-ified rituals, utility powers and skills, possibly Savage Worlds stats)
->d20heartbreaker I intend to upload to the 5e shop based on Legend and 4e
I'm putting the finishing touches on a generic RPG right now, after about four years of work. Then I'll look into formatting and self-publishing or getting it to a publisher, though as an Austrian my options are pretty limited there.
I'd rather starting making games, or playing those made by other people, than these big company games.
I'm curious if there were such figures in the Middle Age Christian Europe. Joan of Arc would be obvious one, but any others?
>>51608077
Historically or in myths and legends? Joan wasn't really a knight in pure historical terms, as she was never knighted. She was a military commander, however.
>>51608077
You can find a few scattered myths about warrior women or ladies who were badass in general, but for the most part the answer is 'no'
Also enjoy your 100+ replies of autisic shitposting because you referenced Joan of Arc as a real knight, now people have to come out of the woodwork and debate whether she was just a lucky charm/cheerleader or an actual military figure. -4 STR will follow.
Non comprehensive list of names for you to google, OP.

Absolutely NONE of these fit your criteria of the middle ages, Europe, and Christian except maybe Matilda of Canossa who was one of the Pope's body guards. But they're the only warrior women I could find.
I'd like to get into 40k again after a long hiatus and would like to play a good edgelord chapter of SM. I'd rather not limit myself to the pedestrian first founding chapters, this would really fly in the face of my contrarian nature.
Leaning towards Minotaurs
>reputation for being unusually xenophobic
>do not work well with other Imperial military units
>often dispatched against other marines...they relish this
>historical records of them were suppressed for 1000 years by the high lords of terra
>return to the history books after with new well behaved mannerisms
>literally genocided by the high lords and replaced by well behaved cucks
Can anyone offer up a better edgelord chapter?
>>51607727
Minotaurs lean more towards asshole than edgelord, much like Marines Malevolent. Carcharodons are a bit more edgy. Flesh Tearers are super edgy.
Minotaurs are awesome.
>Look cool
>Fluffy for them to fight any battle
>Excuse to have lots of cool Forge World models (they are a rich chapter)
>Noted on battlefield to have lots of dreadnoughts
>Edgy as fuck chapter master
What is not to like?

Need 4 Aether Hubs
Purr/10
>>51607621
neew to this standard what the symbol in the middle of the aether hub mean is that a mana symbol of my choice ?
>>51607737
The diamond is a colorless mana, you can't pay for colored mana with it, only the generic mana of the card
For example, your Riparian Tiger cost 3 generic mana and 2 green mana
With Aether Hub, you can pay for one of those 3 generic mana but not for any of the 2 green mana, unless you activate the second ability of Aether Hub
What is day to day life like on a generic imperial non-factory world? Like a world with business and banking and things.
Is it dystopian and filled with torment, or just like real life with a different flag?
>>51606703
Which type of planet? Feral Worlds have it different than Civilized.
>>51606720
I mean like a generic civilized world.
Like the Seattle of planets.
most worlds are actually peaceful agri-worlds or industrial worlds
even hive worlds are an ok place as long as you arent in the underhive
there is much higher tech variation than in real life, but generally you get 3 square meals a day, you dick around on the holonet, watch "spooky the space marine" on your holo-vids, venerate the emperor, and go your whole life in a slightly higher, or lower, tech version of your average life
it is possible to go your whole life with seeing an ork or a nid up close, and the closest brush with chaos is seeing wayward youths get busted on your holo-vid set.
/tg/, Why do you homebrew?
Also a homebrew thread, I guess
>>51606213
Two Reasons:
1) 5e doesn't have the options I want, and the homebrew community for 5e is massive, and pretty good at balanced content. It's also non-existent on /tg/.
2) I'm working to become a vidya designer with a focus on game mechanics. I love system analysis and modding, so I homebrew. Not sure if anyone will play, but hey, it's at least fun for me.
>>51606213
1) for fun
2) there is no game that is just perfect for me in every aspect
3) so there is a system that fits the worldbuilding I do
>>51606213
Homebrews more or less go to /gdg/ >>51546370
I homebrew because it's fun and it's my obsession.
I'm the one who made pic related (in case you've been to 5eg). There's also a separate version that is a full-on class, but due to the new Sorcerer UA, I thought making a base class variant would be better.
Felt like reading 40k but don't really wanna read hh or something like that. What's short and good?
>>51606041
The Siege of Castellax.
>>51606041
Read the Eisenhorn omnibus. The most 40k novel there is. It's a nice novel that translates the setting so unbelievably well. Not just because it follows an inquisitor, but because it shows day-to-day life in the Imperium as well.
>>51606041
Ciaphas Cain, HERO OF THE IMPERIUM.
Alternatively, the first Gaunt's Ghosts omnibus.
Help me out here, /tg/. I need a BBEG for my new campaign. The general plot is trying to solve the murder of a baron, and I have everything else but the actual murderer. Any ideas or suggestions to nudge me in the right direction? Pic tangentially related
The butler did it. The butler always did it. The catch is that he needs the blood of the baron to summon some demon from his ancestors, or gain the ancient magicks sealed away by the family for generations
Make it a whodunnit among the townsfolk, as several people tried to frame each other for the murder. Players can engage in plenty of mystery solving while being forced to come up with a decision for themselves, as each clue leads to another person and another hole.
The townsfolk plotted together to kill him, but made this convoluted plan so that it could never be solved and this his death would become irrelevant with time.
>>51605587
The foreign dignitary did it, but he was possessed by the ghost of the baron's grandfather at the time.
In what RPGs can I play a magical-gun-toting dragoon or cuirassier mounted on a pegasus/wyvern/griffin/hippogriff/cloud ray, charging through the sky and trying to board airships while avoiding their arcane broadsides?

The Fire Emblem RPG with some modifications. Especially now that the most recent FE games include firearms.

>>51604827
Savage Worlds?
Does /tg/ play pic related?
>>51604756
Only if you want to lose friends, or if you hate someone and want to lose them fast.
>>51604756
It's great!
It is one of the few board games that I enjoy.
Last time I played was in undergrad, and one guy got bored and starting selling his property for snacks out of the vending machine down the hall.
I still play Fortune Street on occasion. One friend vowed to never play again after we collectively decided to sell our property for one gold a piece to the guy in second place to shoot his value up past victory during the race to the bank. Never gloat during a game where everyone else can collectively fuck you over was the lesson that day.
I'm trying to put together a game with a lot of larger-than-life wuxia-like action in a homebrew setting with a lot of inspiration from various different cultures in what we'd think of as "the Far East." (this ranges from India to the Polynesian Triangle and everywhere in-between). It has a multitude of mighty warriors, warlords, horsemen, river barbarians, and islander champions that would find themselves at home in myth.
I want something cinematic and fun and easy to play. I need some suggestions/pros and cons on the systems I have to choose from; I'm also open to suggestions of systems that I don't have access to. So far my options seem to be:
>Feng Shui 2
I like the various kinds of abilities and cinematic styling coming together for a very wuxia-like feel. But I'm afraid that, mechanically, if I take away the contemporary and future aspects to it, then the pseudo-historical parts stretch well enough without needing to do a lot of homebrew; butter over too much bread and all that.
>Legends of the Wulin
I'm simply not familiar with the system and would like people's opinion on it. However, as it's purpose-built to run wuxia-like games, I'm confident that it's up there.
>Legend of the Five Rings
I'm alright with using this, but I'm not a fan of the work it might take; it seems that L5R is built around playing in Rokugan, and another setting might not work so well. And while I know the mechanics work well for Akira Kurosawa-style fast and brutal fights, I have no idea how well it does flashier, more mythical stuff.
>Exalted
I feel similar to LotW in regards to this being built for wuxia-like action, though I know that as a GM I'd need to "tone down," what stats really mean, as I don't plan on my players literally jumping over mountains and whatnot; at least, not until far, FAR later into their potential mythical careers.
So that's what I have, /tg/. Suggestions? Summaries? Opinions? Help?
>>51604378
May well do some image dumping while I wait for opinions. This is an image board, after all.
Also as a correction: I'm afraid that Feng Shui 2's historical stuff WON'T stretch well enough to feel mechanically deep without all the contemporary and future options; this is why I used the analogy of butter over too much bread.
I'm one of a few LotWfags on the board. I've written up some descriptions/summaries in the past that I might have noted down. Or I could just write one up fresh, if either would be helpful.
I will say up front that LotW, while cinematic and fun, is not easy to play at first. I adore the system, but the editing of the core book is godawful which makes the multiple different assumptions the system makes much harder to wrap ones head around.
When you get it all working? It's fucking sublime. But there's a significant learning curve, both for GMs and players, to get it to that stage. It's such a damn shame, because it has the best combat of any RPG I've ever played, but holy shit they fucked up the release version so damn bad.
>>51604424
I'm using a lot of pictures from all over the world because I'm trying to avoid the feeling of "this is just Japan and China," that a lot of anons get when people say "setting based on the Far East."
>>51604435
What makes the combat so good? And do you know if there's a better-edited release or a fan-made document that edits it all together? I've played Shadowrun, so I'm familiar with looking through shit editing, but I'd prefer to avoid it if possible.
Of all the games I listed above, LotW is the one I'm least familiar with. From all the praise I hear of it though, it is next to FS2 for my "most likely," pick; unless someone here revealed that it sucked or suggested something much better.
