Immortality.jpg
136KB, 1024x576px
So for an upcoming campaign, some major players of the world are an old adventuring party of the main antagonist, who's ruled the world for close to 5000 years.

I wanted each of the characters to have their own flavorful version of immortality going.

The King of the world and party fighter stole an hour glass from the god of death, that so long as he keeps filled with the ashes of the dead, he will never die, by any means.

His trusted adviser and party wizard has created a porcelain replica of his youthful body that he can control while his true body is preserved in crystal.

The party druid has abandoned society completely, living out constant reincarnations, but retaining their mind. They spend all of their time in the form of a lion, as after so many reincarnations, they no longer feel comfortable in their own skin.

I'll be completely honest that i'm looking to take ideas from this thread as i'm still looking for two more sources of immortality for the remaining two party members. They are a rogue and the last one's class will probably be a cleric but as of now it's kind of up in the air.

That said, I also just looking to share ideas for different kinds of immortality you've seen across table top games, as i find them really interesting in general.

There's always the obvious undead route, with vampires and liches.
>>
>>51724451
Maybe the Rogue is so good at hiding he/she can escape from the god of death's reapers when they come looking. By slipping into a plane they can't reach for example.
>>
>>51724451
The Clerics a pretty easy one, say that as long as they keep completing their gods will he continues to let them wander the earth.

Maybe reaching a bit far, but for the rogue go the V for Vendetta route of the idea not the person. I.e. they're one of a long list of people trained to think and act just like the original rogue.

With fantasy names for cities, do you prefer having odd sounding cultural names (Alcanar, Solaeth, Palaria) or ordinary English names (Goldstar, Southspear, Westhammer) or maybe a combination of both?

I personally prefer the two-word English names for cities since they sound cooler and roll off the tongue better.

English names for the main kingdom
Odd sounding to other kingdoms, with tone depending on the culture
the odd ones are just two-words in their language
>>
>>51747948
IMO, odd sounding, by a landslide. Half-assed fantasy names based on modern languages that the group understand kind of ruins the immersion.

Song of Swords is a a tabletop RPG centered around realistic medieval fightan' with a ludicrous variety of weapons and fighting styles, centered around a dice pool system. It's currently in beta, and can be used for both fantasy and historical games. Kickstarter is happening NOW we are kicking ass baby!

Call of the Void: Ballad of the Laser Whales is a pulpy sci-fi tabletop RPG about fighting space-nazis and hunting giant whales with harpoons made out of the moon. Its combat system is more modern, based in the early 20th century, but can probably handle combat up to the present day.

I'm making an item designed for a diviner and I want one of its properties to make True Strike useful. Essentially
>You may use a bonus action to cast a divination cantrip.
If he could do that at will it'd be too strong, but once per day feels like hardly anything. How do I make this work?

So Samurai Jack is getting a new season, and my group's being pretty hyped about it.

It's got an absolutely amazing setting, perfect for running gonzo episodic adventures that mix genres and themes.

Are there any games out there with a similar setting to the show? Mix match of tech-levels and cultures but with a unifying tone/feel to it so that it doesn't just feel like a random jumble of shit but a cohesive, albeit highly diverse world. I think Gamma World might be a good example of what I'm going for, while Rifts a bad one.

What about a system that emulates the high-octane action feel? Something with great minion/mook rules and that does boss battles well. I can't really think of a good system for this; Too freeform and it feels arbitrary and unrewarding to do over the top cool shit, too crunchy and it slows down the pace and brings down the cool factor.

Feng Shui. Just... Feng Shui.

Normally I'm more of a crunch heavy Legends of the Wulin kinda guy, but for Samurai Jack Feng Shui fits to a fucking tee.
>>
>>51743543

I've considered it, but it sounds like it tries to emulate a specific genre of film, and it does that very well, but I don't think I'd do cartoon action that well.

For one, its character creation rules are vague, almost inexistent. It relies heavily on pre-built character archetypes, which are very fitting for Action movie games, but not that great if you want to run a crazy gonzo sci-fi Cartoon action game.

Now, I might be completely wrong, since I have never played it myself, that's just the impression I got from skimming through the pdf.
>>
>>51743629
You're wrong, Feng Shui is perfect for all kinds of gonzo action shenanigans. V1, not v2 though.

I don't really know what to call it, the traditional mythology of Britain? There's this vibe with knights and dragons, the classic D&D setting. What is the origin? Where can I learn more about it? I know the Souls games used them.

The problem is that it's a confused half-remembered impression of what various authors and poets thought the middle ages were like, decorated with Victorian sensibilities.

What do you call the mythology of the greeks? Greek mythology. It's British/Western-European mythology, depending on what aspects you're talking about. That whole coastline + island shares a lot of history, so most of the big iconic stuff can be found in multiple tellings of slightly different stories.
As many of the popular legends are effectively one-off short stories, I'd say start with a book of classic legends or fables Tons of such collections are out there, but be sure you're not picking up some sort of generalized/summarized version. I'd also be sure to read The Legend of King Author, the four branches of the Mabinogi, and the traditional versions of the Grimm fables.

PHB has quirks you can give to players and NPCs but what about town quirks? What kind of quirks would make a town memorable? I got the basic ones, like disproportionate number of males/females/old/young, regional accent, talking with hand movements, but what are some really memorable quirks that we can give a town?

In my experience?
Truly bizzarre shit. Like a dark and ominous black obelisk in the middle of town that no one seems to notice is emitting a dark aura
Catgirls.
Have a local steal from the party.
Have the locals be extremely biggoted/unnaturally welcoming. Like to the point of them being so unnerved by it that they prefer to camp outside the town rather than have a free stay in the Inn.
Basically interactions.

Is it always true (relative to ingame lore)? Is it an outright falsehood and clerics are fooling themselves? Pic related, I personally love ambiguity in my religious lore and Kirkbride did a good job of that IMO. If magic is real, gods and their avatars/chosen ones are also real.
Its pretty fun to roleplay the chosen ones as the living embodiment of their god portfolio and it often led to shenanigans.
Having the gods being false or based on lies when magic is real is stupid, not fun and pointless.

Sorry to break the bad news to y'all, but MTG is going to die in 2017. The community is in chaos, and many prominent figures like Deriums and Brian Kibler left. WoTC just banned cards from Standard for the first time in years, attendance is near-nonexistent at FNMs, and Modern just got the Extended treatment. Price-gouging is becoming more and more toxic, both by speculators (Moat, LED, Library) and by WoTC themselves (Planechase Anthology, Commander 2016, Eternal Masters also before the reprint, but by then the damage had been done. Kaladesh was an absolute nightmare for collectors because having lottery cards in every pack killed the mystique of the Zendikar Expeditions, and a nightmare for players due to stupid sacky insta-win cards like AEtherworks Marvel and Felidar Guardian. The surge in popularity of Pokemon TCG Online was the straw that broke the camel's back for Magic Online, and knowing WoTC, they won't ever revamp it to make it look like it was designed this decade. Lastly, the world is changing, multiplayer gaming is moving towards E-sports, and sorry to say, but Hearthstone is the top dog and Magic won't ever even come close.

Sorry to break the bad news, but 2017 IS the last year of Magic. Sell your collections now before they're worth nothing.

In a house of a godless king,
A dead star will die,
The crystal mountain begins to sing,
And the cyclops loses his eye.

The heavens begin to scream,
As oceans of hate spill in,
The silence awakens the queen,
And two-hundred cycles begin.

In the wake of a beast,
With no head and no end,
Rides the queen to the feast,
All lords knees will bend.

At the eat of the dead,
In the hall of the mouth,
Stairs colored red,
Calls the hole in the south.

The way of the sword,
The time of the light,
The law of a lord,
All end that night.

Out the rend colored blue,
He judges the worth,
For each one there's two,
A hole in the north.

Appraisal of matter,
Priced at the worst,
The words of the latter,
Anger the first.

A stirring of flies,
The toll of a bell,
The dead will now rise,
Evicted from hell.

Two princes of death,
Two legions of souls,
Decay on their breath,
Exacting their tolls.

The end of an era,
At the final turn,
The queen reigns in terra,
And watches it burn.

The race of the mind,
Take the king of nine stars,
They exit in kind,
Healing nine scars.
