I love me some good, old fashioned tactical combat in RPGs with the typical mechanics of rounds, actions, damage on hit points and so on. Lately I've developed an interest in alternatives to that though and I'm looking for suggestions to read through.
I'm not looking for games that completely waive conflic or combat rules or cut them down to simple "just do one roll to resolve the entire thing", but stuff like Burning Wheel and by extend Mouseguard, where conflicts are still codified by rules, decisions are to be made and combat isn't just purely freeform. Apart from those two and Dogs in the Vineyard, any other good systems to look at for this stuff?

The One Ring - still has something that loosely resembles traditional RPG combat (attack rolls, damage, special actions etc), but all the movement rules are scrapped and replaced by very abstract "phase" and "engagement" rules.

HeroQuest 2 usually just solves a combat with single roll, but in case of particulary dramatically important cases it might be extended to so called "extended contest", when it gets much more detailed, though mostly in narrative way than mechanical, as most rolls are still simple d20 rolls agains set DC, in which what in particular you do has little to say. Also same method may be applied to any "important, dramatic task", not just combat.

Thanks, I'll have a gander at those. Though, without having read it, HeroQuest 2 sounds less like the kind of stuff I'm looking for, since I'm on the lookout for games that blend the narrative combat with codified rules instead of just narrating a ton of stuff that boils down to a single roll or two.
>>
Not OP but I might as well ask here: is there a crunchy system that resolves combat without rolls but isn't freeform?

Let me preface this by saying I'm not normally vindictive but I feel compelled in this instance. A while back I had an impromptu Pathfinder session with some friends who hadn't played dnd before (I was the dm). It was fun for the most part and I thought everyone had a good time. I found out later that one of the players, let's say his name is Horatio, did not enjoy the session at all. I didn't think much of it, but when I heard his reasons I grew peeved, According to him, we had different goals for dnd. He wanted a mostly story based dealio and I was focused on stats and rules. I would like to note at this time that the session we had together had the following features, A) No grid or board of any type, B) Milestone XP, C) Arbitrary loot pulled out of my ass, D) Incredibly limited battle encounters consisting of like 3-4 enemies max, and E) Practically only character interaction and world exploration.
Now Horatio is planning on doing a campaign soon and, presumably, he plans to be running it more to his tastes. He's said that basically anything is ok, third party w/e, and that he's planning on getting "exotic". What I want to know is, what is the most passive aggressive way to make his life difficult as a new dm without being too obtuse or transparent in my goals.

I know the whole "Have you tried not playing D&D" will be mentioned, but is this a ongoing issue with other games played? Are there that many edgelords that want to Chaotic Evil characters? Or am I being to strict here when it comes to character creation?
13 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Evil players are shitty snowflakes 99% of the time. Anyone who's not willing to make a good character tends to be one.
>>
>>51951221
You aren't being too strict, 99% of the time the evil guy in a group of good characters is obnoxious and lolrandum for everyone else. Have you tried talking to him?

>I know you want to play McStabby but that wouldn't be fun for everyone else
>You want to create chaos, so imagine the party is meeting the king and you stab someone because it's what your character would do
>Now best case your party is outlaws, more likely they all die
>that's not fun

Have him play a bard, he'll be party face so he still gets plenty of focus but less destructively
>>
>>51951359
Yeah, I did talk with him. He decided to go with the Vengeance Paladin. The diet-coke of evil paladins I suppose it will have to do. Friend then asked if he could go evil before I told him no. Others players weren't happy about it; especially the cleric in the party. Suppose I should keep an eye-out and play it by ear.

So I am running a game of Fedora:The Tipping this saturday, thanks to some threads I've seen in the past week making fun of it, and a drunken dare for doing it.

I will post the cringiest highlights to /tg/ via greentext, and part of me feels this is the gateway drug to FATAL if this goes well.

with that the case, I am trying to think of enemies to make for the game and want the biggest counterbalances to the cringey delusional team my players created... I am thinking one of the character's stepdads should be a midboss, and Chris-Chan should be an "Old Crusty One" to fight in the end...but of course I do need to have lesser enemies, does anyone have some suggestions.

P.S. the game is starting in a mall at a hot topic.

How do you guys create alternative morality systems? I'm interested more in content than mechanics, but I'd still like to hear whatever you have to offer!

More specifically, I'm wanting to create a Lizardfolk (pic related) character who's morality does not line up with the traditional Lawful/Chaotic, Good/Evil axis, or at least the sins/virtues associated with it, but I'm having a hard time coming up with a enough of an alternative to be satisfied. I'd like my character to act within a framework that is at least comprehensible.

My initial thoughts are that it would be based around perceived "waste". Essentially, Waste/Frugality. To discard things before they're used up is a sin, while using it as long as possible would be a virtue. I imagine my character horrified when the party leaves the enemy corpses where they lie. What sort of twisted being would discard perfectly good food, without even hacking an arm off for later?

Any help expanding on the Waste/Frugality axis, or any alternative axis you could suggest would be really helpful!

>Any help expanding on the Waste/Frugality axis, or any alternative axis you could suggest would be really helpful!

Nature vs. Nuture. The Hivers in Traveller practice both in turn with regards to their young.

The Hivers are hermaphroditic. They routinely swap genetic material by "shaking hands" with one of their 6 limbs. After doing so, they drop larvae with no care whatsoever. They care so little about those larvae that they routinely fumigate their ships and installations to kill them.

When/if any larvae make into the wilderness surrounding Hiver "nests" (settlements), they spend several years living scurrying about as scavenging animals growing in size and intelligence. The survivors are eventually impelled to return to whatever "nest" is nearby and only then do the adult Hivers begin caring for and teaching them.

The wilderness period is seen as so important by the Hivers that they regularly import predators to make the live of the larvae more difficult.

Now, echo that attitude in your Lizardfolk. I'm sure you've seen the gauntlet newly hatched sea turtles must run to get to the 'safety" of the ocean. Imagine Lizardfolk eggs hatching and the "sprats" scrambling into the nearest swamp or watercourse through a horde of small predators. After a couple of years, those Lizardfolk juveniles which have been big/nasty/smart/lucky enough to survive, leave the swamp and wander into the nearest Lizardfolk settlement. It's only then that they are begun to be "nurtured" as 'children".
