Isn't that in north korea?
>>51975468
Present day North Korea, as it happens.
So I've been in a 3.5 campaign for about 4 years now that was originally 4e. When we switched to 3.5 the players learned the fuck out of the system but the DM did not. Consequently I have had to help him to make challenging encounters. He's a great storyteller but as we all know 3.5 is a bit of complicated system. Serious fuck up on my part agreeing to switch to 3.5, because I've played it for 8 years and know the rules well, so i figured "hey it'll be easy to pick up and DM, right?"
So the BBEG is a lich (an illusionist lich) and our party is seven members ranging in level from 6 to 9. The DM is probably going to use the Monster Manual lich because it's simpler.
Problem is our group has a psion who likes combining chameleon power and fly for the equivalent of greater invisibility. I get shut down when I mention the rules for hiding after attacking because everyone thinks it's basically Halo active camo. So he plans to BTFO this lich singlehandedly.
Basically, I am looking for a way to counter that. Pic related is the lich from D&D 3.5 Monster Manual with some minor alterations. I need to make this thing tougher. My parameters:
> nothing too complex to use, DM is not skilled at the game
> spells preferrably, or items
> as much as possible I would love to fit in with the lich being an illusionist. Considering having a mix of contingency and mislead on him to make the party fight a fake version of him for a few rounds, mixed with greater invisibility
> something to counter the FUCKING chameleon power
> also DM has rules magic and psionics are different so dispel magic, etc. doesn't work against it
Help me, /tg/, you're my only hope.
> How do I wizard in 3.5?
You're hopeless
Here's the PDF of what I have so far for the DM to use. Haven't change the spell list yet.
>>51972741
Well I really need to not change much except for the spell list, and maybe give him some items. He's a wizard and a lich (recently ascended but still) so he should have a ton of spells. I just don't want to change too much about him except for spell list and maybe giving him a few items (preferrably something that would let him detect this guy before he gets close enough).
The other big issue is, I am not the one running him. The DM is, and the DM does not know 3.5 well. He lost to a few clever tricks and let one player (the psion) solo-kill two 11th level hobgoblin wizards aboard a huge ship.
Like I said he's a really really good storyteller but he doesn't know the rules and we have a rules-lawyer in our group, except the type who advocates for his twisted interpretation and shuts down all opposition. And everyone backs him up except me who wants an actual fair fight.
So, if this guy decides to rush in and fight the lich alone, it'd be nice if said lich had some good tricks up his sleeve. Preferrably tricks that are idiotproof because the DM, while intelligent, is not fantastic at 3.5
If I was running the lich, he would have contingency dimension door on him and would be scrying the PCs from afar ready for them to show up, then have whole armies of illusory undead and summon wraiths and shit to drain their strength into oblivion before showing up and raping them with disintegrate, flesh to stone, baleful polymorph, et cetera.
But I'm not running him so I have to give a recipe to the DM.

THREAD QUESTION:
>What's your favorite old school renaissance blog?
What's the best module to hook people into the hobby? One with a low-level entry (in player skill), ramping difficulty, and a bit of everything when it comes to flavor.
I'm using B/X btb and I'm very strict with resource/time tracking, if that matters.

Can you fine gentlemen recommend any Fantasy RPGs that have magic in them but aren't about Wizards or Mages slinging Fireballs, Rainbow beams and enriched Uranium lasers every combat? My group are interested in playing a Fantasy game, I'm super hyped because I'm fed up of sci fi and I want to run something Heroic and not morally ambigious. The only issue is the magic. I get that in games like DnD or Pathfinder, the Magic is an inherent part of the game. You'll probably suffer if you don't have a wizard, even if I as a GM explicitly don't send them against Wizard NPCs.
I'm looking for something where Magic exists, but in a subtler way. Magical creatures can still breathe fire and what have you, but there aren't spellbooks for sale and mage guilds in every city. If people are casting magic, it's ritual stuff with cost, time and preparation.
I've played a lot of WFRP 2e in the past, but the low success chance of most actions put me off using it for a game that I'd like to be about Heroes and not Murderhobos accidentally doing the right thing sometimes.
>>51968958
Runescape, Burning Wheel and maybe OSR retroclones like "Adventurer Conqueror King", but with those you need to understand the design choices and well, there still can be this DnD creep but AFAIK lower.
So those 2 former titles are probably what you are looking for, but "Runescape" is very different and "Burning Wheels" need some serious reading through, so it might not be ideal.
>>51969146
I've found that I had a pdf of Burning Wheels, I've started reading and remembered why I forgot it. The mechanics of it sound interesting but it's so hard to read. I'm not finding an RPG called Runescape, dare I presume you meant Runequest?
>>51968958
>I'm super hyped because I'm fed up of sci fi and I want to run something Heroic and not morally ambigious
That's less on the setting or ruleset and more on the tone of the campaign and the antagonists you want to let the players face.
Make sure to tell this upfront to your players so they don't mistakenly create anti-heroes and ruin everyone fun.
What are some alternatives for a bard other than playing music?
I could maybe see a philosopher. Or a famous actor.
>>51967919
Arguably an artist and/or orator of any sort. You could probably do a painter bard.
Don't you WANT to be a str 18 sculptor bard? It's not like performing that way really takes that much time. You can take small jobs in engraving etc.
A prostitute.
>>51967993
Okay, seriously. If you've been at least a week in here you've probably seen those guys talking about a "technology ban" on the table.
Now, for years I've taken them for shitposters, since that's what they look like with their "NO SMARTPHONES OR TABLETS ON MY TABLE REEEEEE", because seriously, I'm a forever GM, and I handle various games, with players ranging from fifteen to thirty years. Never banned smartphones from the table, never had issues with them, be the player a veteran or a newbie. Hell, I actively use them to send PMs to the players, it's a lot less evident than folded papers. Not to count that checking rules, keeping initiative and stats, and handling all the necessary material is objectively easier with a laptop or a tablet.
Now, recently I've heard people out of this board, even IRL, whining about technology at the table, and I've started to realize that this opinion may not be a shitpost. So, what the fuck is their issue? Are their players riddled with ADHD? Do they think technology is bad and that engineers are witches? Are they Rousseau's fiendish spawn? I'm perplexed, /tg/.
I think some people have had issues with it being a distraction during the game, though usually this is because someone just isn't ivnested or paying attention anyways.
Only had an issue once with laptops at the table, and it was just one guy who had to stop the game every 5 minutes to show us this wacky hilarious xD video he found on youtube. He was stopping games and being disruptive even before the laptop was an issue though, so I don't blame that.
Told him to put it away, he didn't, so I just kicked him out, and the problem was solved.
>>51967042
>Are their players riddled with ADHD?
Clearly you play with different breed of gamer form another planet.
Complaining one has ADD at the drop of a hat is the go to excuse for any gamer I have met in the last decade of my life.
>The obvious take away is that they don't actually have it, they just want an excuse to be a spazz.
>calling anyone riddled with adhd when you can't keep track of basic numbers
