Tell me, gents, how do runes work in your setting?

What is your favorite implementation of them? Least favorite?
18 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>

It's a dwarven religious practise
It only works because dwarven ancestors depart some of their own energy or strength into the runes of power.
Rune weapons that are not used by dwarves will slowly decay over time.

I like this system.

I dislike any system where runes is just another form of magic without really being different from regular magic.

>without really being different from regular magic

Being different in the way that the spell is cast and the types of spells runes are capable of casting isn't interesting enough?
>>
>>52043110

Lore wise for my setting joining them in certain ways creates "magic circuits" that can certain spells indefinetly as well as produce energy like electricity and heat.

This forms the basis on how most magic items works and leads towards industrialization of magitek.

Any fa/tg/uys familiar with Recon? I want to run a modern military-style game and in my search for a system I happened upon the rulebook. After giving it a read through I liked what I saw, it seems simple enough while not being too simple. But I want some second opinions on it before I commit to doing anything with it.

Well, the /k/ommando in me gets a little upset seeing an M1 carbine have the same damage dice as a BAR, but if you aren't a /k/ sperg it shouldn't bother you; but if you are then play Ops & Tactics.

More details on the game you're trying to run?
>>
Another thing that sucks about Recon is that armor and helmets do nothing. (The argument being that a direct hit from a bullet will go through the stuff available) - trouble is it ignores shrapnel, which is a huge threat and armor's pretty good for.

Other games to look at -
Savage Worlds Weird War Series
Savage World's Modern Ops
Ops & Tactics (like anon said)
Gurps (which can run from super simple to operators operating)

But for a good recommendation, what's your game about?
>>
>>52042080
I'm not a huge /k/ spurge, so it won't bother me quite so much, and I'm willing to homebrew the kinks out anyway.

I had two ideas for a campaign: one would be relatively simple, basically mercenaries in the 1980s doing mercenary shit in various third world countries, a la Jagged Alliance or MGSV.

Second idea would be based on GATE, and would involve the PCs being soldiers sent to a low-fantasy world. It would probably be closer to the modern day and would require a bit more homebrewing and refluffing, though I wouldn't think that much (helicopter stats for a dragon, etc.).

Tell me about some of your characters, /tg/

I've got a handful of groups for a campaign right now
>"The Business"
>Richard Trickle, short combover businessman with past gang affiliations that's always nervous and sweating profusely
>Fred Buck, 6'5" guy in a professional tan suit. Wears a metal cage on his head , super charismatic despite being unable to talk
>Abby Mince, almost all business almost all the time. Face was erased off (with an eraser) and she has a stick figure face drawn on. Maroon suit, gray undershirt. Clipboard always in hand with reports on everyone she meets
>Andre East, skinny guy with way oversized clothes. Can't take no for an answer
>Stanley "Stan" Narcotzi, Italian hothead. Slicked back hair. Always slightly glowing green, always eating a pastry. Speaks with a mouthful of whatever he's got in hand

Share stuff, post stuff, r8 and ber8

From a campaign some friends and I ran through a while back
>Ghost Bard with an accordion
>Dunderhead barbarian with a proficiency in arcane
>twink cleric that got killed
>hardass old man that got killed in the same incident
>jackass demon-elf that took the cleric's place
>undersized monkey man that took the old man's place
The incident, as shitty as it was, was hilarious throughout the whole ordeal
>come upon bbeg
>not supposed to fight him yet, do anyway
>he's a full on spellcaster
>bard casts silence, dm visibly befuddled
>things go to shit for the bbeg
>he ends up dead and so do his incubi
>barbarian sees the bbeg's belt and picks it up
>arcane runes on it, starts mashing all of them and activating everything
>belt blows up
>barb rolls lucky and ends up flying out into the ocean through a window
>ghost and a pirate captain npc peaced the fuck out
>old man and twink practically vaporized
The dm's face when the bard whipped out silence was priceless.

I don't have my books to search, so I'm relying on Wikipedia. According to the Orc article:
While the overall concept of orcs draws on a variety of pre-existing mythology, the main conception of the creatures stems from the fantasy writings of J. R. R. Tolkien, in particular The Lord of the Rings...

In Tolkien's writings, Orcs are of human shape, of varying size but always smaller than Men. They are depicted as ugly and filthy, with a taste for human flesh. They are fanged, bow-legged and long-armed and some have dark skin as if burned.

(I added the underline.) As I recall, the 1E AD&D Monster Manual has no mention of skin color at all. What is certain about orcish biology is that they are mammals and they are almost certainly primates. Unless I am seriously mistaken, there is no such thing in nature as a green mammal.

So why did the popular, nearly universal image of orcs turn green? When did this happen? Is it all WoW's fault?

Setting is bland and uninspired.

Mechanics are poorly designed; it requires a lot of effort and you don't really get a reward for playing it. (Unlike, say, shadowrun which is also quite heavy but also very rewarding).

The book is shit. Certain pages / sections feel malplaced. Some wordings are odd. It's a pain in the ass to read.

how do you deal with a party that constantly splits if you are GM?

>>
>>52045155
could you give us some more info?

is there a pattern? do certain players always split off together? Perhaps having two groups instead of one, if that's possible.

giving incentives to being together, and threats to being apart is a choice. limiting their communication abilities between groups and ambushes and stuff?
>>
>>52045155
Put obstacles in their way that can only be reliably surmounted if they all work together. If they don't, it's a mini-party wipe. Make sure to forewarn this way beforehand of course otherwise you'll just be a dick.

Also, just talk to them about this if them splitting up isn't something you want or can handle.
>>
>>52045203
I am actually a player in our current campaign. The person who GMs is a player who never GMed before and our first session was kind of a disaster. I tried to help him a little bit by trying to keep the party together because I know how much of a horror it is as the GM to deal with 3-4 split players that all do their separate thing. But one of them constantly wants to be the sneaky rogue navy seal super agent.

I wanted to have a talk with our GM and see if we can come up with a solution to the problem.

I've never noticed that. Most player's I've played with have played very different characters over several campaigns.
Except one guy who basically plays a boring self insert human in every game. Same name as him, too. I've also had one guy who only played females, but they were still somewhat different.
Oh, and one girl who always played prettyboys.

Yes, every person plays characters of only one class for their entire life.
I myself have never not played a ranger, and I intend to play rangers again and again.
That's not a clearly untrue generalization you pulled out of your ass at all.
