Alright /tg/,

I'm planning on writing a book based in a Fantasy world with multiple races (humans, orcs, elves, dwarfs, ect.) but here's the thing about it: It's supposed to be a direct parallel to human history and an analysis on historical events and civilizations. I'm trying to decide on how to go about doing this and I thought you guys could help with this.

I'll also be posting similar threads on /lit/ and /his/, since I think they'd probably help with this idea. (please try to get along)

My question for you /tg/ is what races should I use for what cultures and should how should I blend the two (or three)? Here's I was thinking:

>Asian Orcs. I could make Mongol, Samurai, Chinese Orcs as they'd be a good comparison for Asia's near constant wars and unrest in history.
>Human Western Europeans. Because you know, probably Americans, Canadians and Europeans will probably be reading this
>Dwarf Eastern Europeans. Good stubborn, headed Russian Dwarfs.
>Muslim/Middle Eastern/African Elves. They would make good historical rivals for Human and Dwarf's.

I'll link the other threads below.

I might also mention /his/ is recommending you guys as a better historical source. Nice on them.

I think you'd be better served on basing fantasy races off real world nationalities, rather than race.

I also think this is extremely vague, given that the practice (and indeed, your exact distribution) is pretty damn common. Maybe try shit we haven't seen represented in media a thousand times- lofty Incan dwarves, fading Mayan elves, bloodthirsty Aztecs without a race change.

Is it a good idea to have a time limit on players' turns in combat? How long should they have to decide what to do?

>Is it a good idea to have a time limit on players' turns in combat?
Yes.

>How long should they have to decide what to do?
One second.
To start talking, that is.
>>
I just make it arbitrary...
>Come on, man, you're on combat, do something!!
>>
>>52077844
There are two distinct problems here.

1. The player is uncertain what to do, or is very indecisive.

2. The player's character/the game system necesitate very long turns (see 3.5 D&D).

For the 1st situation, if a player isn't sure what to do, give them a moment, then suggest they delay their turn. If it's just a matter of picking between 2 or more options, the delay might give the player more information and narrow their choices. If they have no ideas, then they should absolutely delay until they have an idea for an action.

Just make sure they don't feel "punished" for being too slow. After the next player's actions, go back to them, "Want to take your action now?".

New players especially can feel punished for not knowing what to do, forcing them to delay can make them feel like an idiot. Counteract this by returning to them and encouraging them to take a turn.

Especially for new players, don't be afraid to give them a suggestion for an action. But don't do this all the time, or they'll stop thinking and just wait for you to take their turn for them.

If your problem is turn length, because of bulky game mechanics, all you can do is ask that players are prepared to quickly use their abilities, possibly require spreadsheets for very complex mechanics (I made a shapeshifting druid player do this, his turns were too slow otherwise).

I wouldn't worry about hard time limits. Just keep things moving, time limits will just create unneeded pressure.

It doesn't. Sentient behavior is economic behavior and soon the communist party will collapse under its own weight. Long live New Nationalism, where the market is subject to controls, but anyone can engage in capitalist behavior.

I don't care about whatever politiks go with all this post, but I'd argue that we don't have a big enough amount of sentient species IRL to determine what is characteristic of sentient entities or not.

how do you roll play human?
for me I like to make a average joe and play up the asperation and the need to be special.

I feel it's the only thing that makes humans stand out. that desire to be more than normal.

sometimes I play a different race raised by humans and the mentality transfers to them.

if you play human any otherway you're doing it wrong.

Kickstarter from Cool Mini Or Not, by some game developer who's had success before. Supposedly it's his take on a diplomatic game, and it's got really well detail minis. It made over a million in its first couple days of being Kickstarted, so it's pretty popular at the moment.

Alright boys, my players recently left a mission with a crate full of 100 unidentified potions that they pilfered from an alchemist shop. I could have each one roll on a random number chart that I have, but I'd like to see what you guys come up with.

100 potion effects, make them wild, make them crazy.

In all honesty, a "crate" full means most of them are the same kind. Maybe make them 25 of a kind each?
>>

They are aphrodisiacs. All of them.
Make the party drink them and then fade to black for 6 in game days.
They wake up sore and totally feeling violated and pissed on.
>>
I guess it would be important to know that these potions belonged to a novice super villain (it's a science fiction campaign) called the "Perfumigator". These are probably deadly, or have strange effects due to his methods of attack; perfume based grenades. It's a very silly, but deadly campaign.

Grimwyrd
Bloodroot; exotic extraplanar plant that thrives off of mana, and if ferterlized with it, the souls of the recently dead. Consuming raw plant juice/blood imbues you will enhanced powers of your innate magic. Over-consumption or over-dependence on it will curve your own personal diet into only accepting more bloodroot

Bloodwine: A derived liquor of sorts made from boiling and fermenting bloodroot juice. Highly addictive. Euphoric effect on consumption. Highly volatile, explosive, and flammable

Bloodstones; Produced from the thaumatological refinement of bloodroot hearts, a knapped stone can be used to empower a powerstone (storing mana for later use by mages) or otherwise tapping into the spirit realm to bond with one of it's natives. Often connects to demonic influences due to coincidence and fate, which results in those exposed to the wills of demons to fall to baser instincts and animalistic desires(food, fornication, fun)

Long Grass; Sweet Amber

Brought in by foreign traders about 400 years ago. Looks like dried, long blades of grass, with amber-like sticky material along the veins. The plant itself is a mystery and doesn't grow in these parts.

The drug is finely chopped and smoked for euphoric effect, typically via a large hookah. There is little danger associated with its use but inherent scarcity makes it somewhat hard to get without getting involved in shady business. Rumours say that the local merchant lord recently sent an expedition to the land of Long Grass, hoping to bring back a viable plant and establish growing operations.

Honestly, healing potions in my world are considered a tame drug, like caffeine and sugar, but if you get hooked on it you start to develop a magical illness called Hue Flu. Normally it only comes up when wizards and mages either try to cast a spell they don't have the mana for(or suddenly spend it all in one go) and they're stuck puking out iridescent bile for their turn. What's worse is that healing potions are crafted through alchemy, which in my setting is based on Victorian pharmacies. You'd be getting different stores stocking what they'd consider a healing potion, all in varying quality.

On another note, people who don't have the time, intelligence, or wealth to invest in magic education can buy a pack of Zippy Doos, cantrip cigarettes, in order to get a feel of harmless magic at their fingertips. Of course, there are other brands that'll give the consumer much stronger spells at their fingertips. But this comes at a cost of your lungs becoming Star Clogged, where you start to cough up some black, glittery mucus, alongside eventual weakness and constant chills. These types are more of a controlled substance and are prohibited in normal shops. If a wizarding student is seen smoking these while attending school, they could be outright expelled from the campus. I have other ideas, but they aren't all that fleshed out yet.

I'm rather fond of Sillivan Dane, because he's practically Peter Cushing's Van Helsing. The Chevalier de Thélème from Hunter: the Vigil is also pretty awesome. Honorable mentions go to the entire cast of Bloodlines, especially Knox, LaCroix and Mercurio.
