Hey /tg/, I want to run a game based on classic Final Fantasy. What system could you recommend for it?

My current choice is 5e D&D, mostly because it's a system I've run several times in the past. But I'd like to get some other options, if possible.

Well, if you're going for 5e, here's a resource I found where they port all the job/class over to DnD:
http://imgur.com/gallery/tW0J81Y

Also if the realm you're working on happens to be Ivalice I have the following where he compile all the Ivalice games into a cohesive region and timeline.
https://geekluminati.wordpress.com/2013/06/19/gameable-ivalice/
Also the wiki for the bestiary for XII, where you can get high-level render images to use as monster standees, which is currently my plan for a future Ivalice tabletop game:

What do you mean, "based on Final Fantasy"?

If you mean dungeons and kingdoms, airships and chocobos, then that could work out for nearly any system. D&D5e should work fine, especially if you aren't terribly picky about Blue Magic or Summoning behaving exactly the same.

If you are looking for a system you can customize into using MP, Blue Magic, skills, and everything else, then you would want to be a bit pickier. And perhaps make some concessions.

for the love of god dont do it.
a buddy of mine ran a final fantasy campaign in DnD and it was god awful. the story of the classic final fantasy is garbage. if you're hell bent on doing something involved with final fantasy just change the names of creatures to franchise names. the X amount of heros set off to save the 4 gems that anchors the world is so droll and creates no necessity for character building or interaction other than "we obviously need to do X objective, or else the world will cease to exist."

i hate to rain on the parade and offer little else in constructive feedback, but i think that fact stands for how poor of an idea i think this is. it was probably the worst campaign i sat through. i didn't even make it to the end. i quit the group because the campaign went on so god damn long.

How should magic be handled in a low fantasy setting?
65 posts and 10 images submitted.

Carefully... with tongs.
>>
Most of the people who claim to be partitioners are shams, and most of the magic is superstitious in areas where its allowed at all. some areas are so misguided when it comes to magic that they find its practice in any form evil, and perform witch hunts and form lynch mobs.

As far as real magic is concerned, i would only allow casters access to certain schools, like divination or abjuration, and gut the spell list. Heavier emphasis on material components making casting spells harder and more ritualistic.

With great care, by people who are mindful of the risks

How would you go about running this world /tg/? Mind with an emphasis on the dismantling of your enemies and careful prepartion to not die a horrible and painful death to a snapjaw.

You'd want it focused essentially on hunting. Things for stealth, tracking, precision, etc. Add in ways to use elemental vials and craft stuff and you've got a good baseline.

We've translated all of the mechanics of the core rulebook, to my knowledge, and are (semi-currently, the translator is h*cka busy irl) working on the fluff. All of the parts, mechanics, doll creation, basically what you need to play have been accurately translated.

I can give a rundown of the system and answer general questions.

If you play video games, then the best way to put it would be thusly:

Games Workshop is to wargames, what EA is to video games.

They make a lot of money, but everyone hates them since they have some honestly bass-ackwards business practices.

Doesn't mean they have a bad product (minis are nice, games are badly balanced, literally ANY other game system is better), but the company is certainly not liked.

I've never played cube, but I've watched some people playing and I've tried to build one with random cards I had. I have to say, building it was a lot of fun. Trying to find jank that works together and is genuinely fun to play is so cool.
It kinda felt like I was building my own fantasy world, but I had nobody to share it with
>>
>>52068213

sometimes that's the best way to go: start with a jank pile and refine it over playtests

Too many people try to theorycraft the perfect cube before testing it out. "No good plan survives first contact with the enemy"
>>
One of the cubes I wanted to submit to that sham of a contest that was from WotC was themed around horror art cards.

All of the cards were just creepy in appearance, with graveyard themes of course.

Speaking of, for the 2 people who poke in this thread, don't make a cube based around graveyard mechanics, they're a fucking tit to balance.

Alright, /tg/, I need your help. I'm trying to put together a superhero campaign for my local play group, but I'm terrible at coming up with NPC heroes. If you want to help, post a power idea here (bonus points for costume description, backstory, and/or hero name).

To start, here's an example of a villain I came up with (to give you all a feel of what the players will be up against in the end-game):

NAME: Maxwell
POWER: Command of the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics (i.e. the flow of heat) within a 300 yard radius of himself
COSTUME: A black pinstripe suit with blood red accents, a pair of equally black gloves, expensive dress shoes, matching blood red tie, and a horned kabuki mask resembling a grinning demon
BACKSTORY: after being adopted at a young age by the notorious supervillain known as "Laplace", Maxwell seemed destined for greatness. With the obscene potential of his abilities plain for anyone of reasonable intelligence to see, Laplace thought it best that young Maxwell be raised and educated by one of the most brilliant minds in the cape community--namely, himself. Under Laplace's watchful tutelage, the young boy swiftly became something of a prodigy--although one with a distinct weakness for the finer things in life. Now finally at the age of 20, he wants nothing more than to repay the debt that he feels he owes his "father." To this end, he will do anything necessary to live up to the family name, which can only end poorly for anyone who dares stand in his way.

I've been on a My Hero Academia kick now and was thinking of Quirk/Super powers that would be cool to play in a super's game

1. Resource management
- You can freely move "resources" from parts of your body to enhance others. For instance, you can increase your senses by lessening or deactivating other senses (for example, I better my hearing by removing my sense of taste and ability to see color or completely remove ability to see). The maximum ability of this power is to basically give yourself a one minute boost of super human ability, at which point you are exhausted for an entire day.

2. Metal Fetish
- You have the ability to eat vehicles and electronics. In doing so you have the abliity to assimilate what you have eaten into a form of armor. For instance, if you eat a bike your form will have aspects of the motorcycle(s) you have eaten and allow you to become agile, Similiarly if you ate a car your form would resemble aspects of the car but have more all around power increase. When released your armor sloughs off your body and becomes inert and you have to eat the same amount of vehicles to get the same ability again.

3. Bubbles
-You have the ability to produce a sphere of force that has the consistance of a bubble. As long as you hold onto it you can manipulate it freely in size and malleability. Upon releaseing it hardens and has mass equal to it's size. It will always be lightwheight in your hands but you can only destroy it afterwards as it cannot be reshaped.
>>
>>52099397
As a follow-up, behold the adoptive father:

NAME: Laplace
POWER: perfect knowledge+comprehension of all rules (written and unwritten, man-made and otherwise), along with the mental processing power to correlate all of this data (and the interactions between them) at once while still being able to function.
COSTUME: A black pinstripe suit with silver accents, a pristine pair of white dancing gloves, onyx cuff links with silver accents, a simple grey tie, expensive dancing shoes, and an elegant horned opera mask covering the upper portions of his face
BACKSTORY: any information about Laplace's true identity and origin has been either buried under a mountain of bribes and red tape or lost to the annals of time. All that remains are whispers--rumors of high-profile CEOs and supervillains in legal trouble "making a deal with the devil," then suddenly having the exact arguments and loopholes they need to walk free; ghost stories of a nigh-untouchable boogeyman whom even the most daring heroes fear to cross, let alone challenge; and even some tales of multiple world governments marching to the metaphorical tune of just one man. All quake with fear at the approach of the Demon, for he leaves naught but destruction in his wake.
>>
Oh, a pair of heroes I forgot about:

NAMES: Rough and Tumble
POWERS: Rough has a downright ridiculous healing factor and gets exponentially stronger (and proportionally bigger) based on the amount of damage she has taken over the past 24 hours. Tumble, for his part, controls gravity (direction, force, etc.) within a 50 yard radius of himself.
COSTUMES: Rough doesn't so much wear a costume as she does have sturdy, stretchy undergarments to keep decent when she's hulking out (she maintains her secret identity through sheer intimidation). Tumble, seemingly making up for this lack of heroic panache, wears a garish harlequin outfit straight out of a New Orleans Mardi Gras parade.
BACKSTORY: An Army field medic during the First Gulf War, Rough (or, as she was known then, Sgt. Beverly Gleeson) was already having a terrible time of things during what was SUPPOSED to be a routine supply run. Her helicopter had been shot down by a stray RPG, her squad was mostly dead (save for the nearly insensate pilot), and they were ass-deep in the middle of nowhere with 20 miles of mountains between her and the nearest town. Wincing with pain, she struggled to her feet (miraculously unscathed in spite of several tears in her body armor), hauled the gibbering pilot into a fireman's carry (ignoring that he was now staring at her in wide-eyed shock, babbling something about "the angels coming to save him"), and set to trudging/fighting through enemy-infested territory towards the only hope she had. She was unaware, of course, that she had been cut to ribbons by the helicopter wreckage, as well as the fact that she got shot more than once on the return journey. She learned these things rather quickly, though, once she got into contact with her command unit and explained the situation (which would only have been possible with superpowers). Sgt. Gleeson (along with her eventual husband Capt. Hoffstead) were quietly shipped off to a secret training facility, and the rest is history.

We had this one recurring NPC across a number of campaigns set in the same general area and time. He never told us his actual name, but he would search for the "mystic tree", and had a propensity to randomly start shouting. The msystic tree sounded like some kind of secret dungeon or something, because it could be walked into but otherwise was indistinguishable from a normal tree, but we at least could never find it.

>Players tell me they want something action heavy and episodic as opposed to a big "save the world adventure".
>While I wouldn't call them an "evil" party per say, all the players end up making a bunch of mercenary-type characters who will take any job as long as the pay is good enough.
>Accordingly I set the game in a rough and gritty world full of corrupt nobles, ambitious warlords, cults with secret agendas, ect. Think almost like the Conan setting mixed with Mad Max.
>Party does a couple of grey quests, a couple of bad quests, occasionally something that can be considered "good" but only because they were getting paid.
>After a little while party ends up piquing the interest of one of these ambitious warlords and are invited to keep to discuss working for him.
>Warlord is super vain and showy and stuff, so when the party shows up they're basically invited to a feast and waited on by one of his slave girls.
>I think I accidently hit on the magical realm of 3 of 4 of my players, because they kept asking about this slave girl, whom I didn't even bother to name.
>Thinking nothing of it at the time, I just BS'd a bunch of stuff on the spot about how she's timid, speaking only when spoken to, decently pretty aside from a branding burned into her shoulder and what appeared to be the edges of lash marks in some places, you know, typical stuff you'd expect from someone who's a slave to a brutal warlord type.
>One of the players asks how much it would be to buy her freedom
>I just have the warlord laugh and say such things could be discussed after the party's proven their worth, and that there'd be slaves enough for them all if they perform well.
>As soon as the party leaves they start discussing how to kill this guy, even though there's no profit in it for them.
>Party ends up achieving this later on and decides they now want to protect this territory and make it a good place.

I think I accidentally turned an evil party good with a minor NPC I never even named.

A.....a GM-less game?

How. How does one do that without either instantly having meta, designing a hugely detailed terrain board for every detail, or quickly running into the problem of "Where are we? What do we see? Who are we talking to? Are we allowed to do this?"
>>
I've been wanting to automate rolling for things in the Mythic GME and its supplements to see what I could come up with.

Obviously, meta knowledge is unavoidable in a solo RPG if you're trying to have a plot, but it doesn't have to be stifling in that regard.

I'm new to 5e and, for fun, I want to write a module. Maybe even a full campaign. It will probably never get used because I think I'm too shy to ever be a DM, but I think drawing maps and coming up with some storylines would be fun.

I was thinking for my first quest, I'd have the usual rats in the tavern cellar setup, but have the barkeep lock the door behind the adventurers and have them discover some torture dungeon / meat grinder type set up.

What are the best quests you've played / written / heard about? Looking for inspiration.

Practice. Trust me, it's easier to run something that is already been done than make it up. There is a looooot of stuff that comes to running a game.
Run a module before running your own and take note on how the module does it. It wont be perfect, but it's a start.
