A basic helmet that covers the top of your head, maybe with some chearguards or a bit in the back to protect your neck says "I'm here for a fight".

A full head helmet which has a few holes for seeing out of, breathing and hearing says "I'm here for a fight and i'm well protected".

A full head helmet that is styled to look like a skull says "I'm trying too hard to scare you, also I have a small penis".

But a helmet that has a mask which covers the face which looks like an actual face says "Don't fuck with me or i'm gonna fuck you up."

No.

There is no such thing as a perfect gaming system.

Every system has a specific focus to its design, things it is appropriate for. Every group has preferences and tastes that might align with one system and not another.

From what I've heard, Burning Wheel is an excellent system within its niche, but 'perfect' isn't a useful descriptor.

I find that with 99% of heartbreakers, one glance at the character sheet is all you need to spot overly-complicated autism simulators before you ever need to waste a precious moment of brain-power considering whether to play them. Burning Wheel is one such game that failed this screening process instantly.

Ok so more and more recently I've been wanting to do is a game with large scale war, from the perspective of individual soldiers. Specifically, a scenario with high lethality and a feeling of overwhelming odds. You see it in fiction a lot, like in alien with the colonial marines, in HZD and terminator with the machine wars, Forever war, starship troopers, glitter rats, all you need is kill etc.

But the more I think about it, the more I'm sort of stuck on what system to use, or if there's even a good system you can use. War from a soldier's perspective is difficult to simulate because it is divergent from basically all the ideas of most systems; or at least how they deal with conflict.

1. In most systems, when you get in a fight it's you vs some specific other group and you both fight each other till one side wins. Usually, the conflicts are very limited in scale, a half dozen enemies vs a half dozen friendlies. In war, there are two sides but they're so huge that there's no way to win from an individual standpoint. Even in relatively small battles, you have hundreds on either side and winning is based more around controlling or destroying things. The major conflict comes in the form of incremental goals that lead to a major goal. Major goal is to take the beach, with increments of Getting out of the boat, crossing the beach, destroying a bunker, setting up a machine gun position, etc. During these increments, the enemies are a constant thing; you might kill one to get through a trench or hall, but there's always gonna be an endless line of them up there on that ridge shooting at you. At least till you get up there and clear it.

2. Allies also prove a difficult thing to handle because there are huge numbers of them. Admittedly they're mostly gonna be running around in the background but their effects should still be felt. This can be somewhat helped by following the real set up of how the military works, keeping things parsed out to different groups and treating each enemy and allied group as a single unit on a larger scale map, but when you "Zoom in" to the player's unit, you still have the difficulty of them being with some hundred or more other people who are trying to complete the same objective. You have to strike a balance between the NPCs doing too much and the players just being able to hang back, or the npcs doing jack shit and the players doing everything.

3. Death, that is to say the death of any particular character, is a lot less important in the grand scheme of things. Characters will, in order to keep that feeling of lethality and overwhelming odds, no doubt have a short life span, so success has to be measured more in the overall success of the unit rather than the success of the individual. It's worrying that this could quickly cause a complete disconnect between players and characters.

Does anyone know any system that handles these sorts of things or have any ideas for me?
>>
>>52139056

Only War. You're an Imperial Guardsman in the 40k universe, and matches your description perfectly.

All it takes is a competent GM and you could do large-scale trench warfare easily.

System's fairly simple. Roll d100, add or subtract modifiers, compare to your skill in that area (eg. Weapons Skill, Leadership, Intelligence). If it's under, you succeed, if it's over, you fail. It has degrees of success/failure for every 10 over/under you roll.

Lots of fun, if everyone gets into the mindset.

Chtorrans would be fucked.

In the book, the author goes to great lengths to imply how the Chtorr have introduced the diseases that eradicated 60% of the human population, but the xenos arrive and everything is sunshine and roses for them, no illness or disease. I'm fairly sure the Chtorr would be beaten down by Terran-borne fungus or small parasites. I don't care how amazingly advanced your gut system is, if you are consuming every animal and plant species you encounter, you are going to end up with a pretty amazing selection of protozoans and helminths. The big fat worms would spend half their day just shitting out Terran worms they had unwittingly consumed, and the worms that were not pooped out would be using valuable resources.

But this is entirely discounting defensive measures enacted by humans. The U.S. does not "officially" hold any chemical or biological agents due to the Warsaw Pact and Geneva Protocol, but retains the capabilities to begin producing massive quantities of bio-toxins and chemical weapons at any time. If there was a real threat to Terra, I'm sure every nation with the capability would start churning out these weapons. The Chtorrans would have no response for these weapons, and would perish accordingly.

The author understood a little bit about military response to a threat like this, but doesn't seem to know how good our tech is. He didn't seem to understand the concept of combined arms, and how advanced our robots are. The robots we have now are like proto - Men of Iron. Just because they don't look like the Terminator doesn't mean they aren't fantastically capable.

And those bio-toxins and chemical weapons I discussed above? Just because some Eurofags told us not to develop or produce them, doesn't mean we stopped. We just stopped being noisy about it, so it's a certainty we will have some pretty spectacular gear to show off for the xeno freaks when they try to invade.

It is implied they are biologically engineered, any form of terran bacteria would be ineffective.

due to the way the Chtorran ecology works, if you got rid of them temporally, 10 more pockets would appear in its place due to the way they spread through pods or whatever.

>The author understood a little bit about military response to a threat like this, but doesn't seem to know how good our tech is.

This makes me wonder how bad the ecology can get and what kind of horrible things the ecology will start making next.

The Wikipedia article mentions "god-bees" as the next stage of invaders. I wonder what those could be?
>>
>>52138107
>Chtorrans would be fucked.
Highly unlikely.

To defeat the Chtorrans, you need to strengthen the natural Terran ecosystems.

Problem, we've been weakening the natural ecosystems for the last 200,000 years.

Taking over the ecosystem for the Chtorrans will be like a cold virus killing someone with terminal AIDS or cancer. Easy.

Copyright law is fucked and there are cases where they would fundamentally forfiet their IP if they DIDN'T violently shoot down any potential infringement. I recall that being the case with that German fan movie, at least, can't recall if it applied to our bets on Duke.
>>
>>52135831
Pretty much this. If I recall correctly, it's some weird article of British copyright law, specifically. GW must actively take measures to protect it's IP or it ceases being protected by law. That's why we occasionally see all kinds of inane bullshit from GW's part, like pressing copyright violation claims on children's books over the word "Space Marine". Since their IP is such an important part of their business, it's better for them, from a legal perspective, to protect it overzealously than to risk losing their rights to it over a technicality.
