Board is ugly as fuck, with all the land masses elongated or stretched to touch. Gameplay wise, water colonies are cool. Commanders add something to the basic game. Moon is... eh. At least I never had a great experience with it.

Otherwise, it's Risk, with mech pieces.

Does anyone here know about W.O.I.N?

Worth giving a shot? Friend of mine wants to start a far-future campaign, we come from the land of D&D 5e.

Suggestions?

Admittedly I haven't heard of W.O.I.N. before, but if your only prior experience has been D&D 5e, I'd probably recommend going with a tried-and-true system over a relatively recent one.

For dedicated space sci-fi games, Traveller is the classic, pretty much the D&D of space rpgs in terms of popularity and age. The two editions to look at are Classic Traveller and Mongoose Traveller.
The core rules for Stars Without Number are free (or were, last time I checked), and the GM segments are worth reading even if you're playing a totally different system.
Star Frontiers is an old school space sf rpg that is now available freely online. While it's clunky from being an old, unupdated rpg, everything published for it is free and the fact that it's still around means it must have some staying power.
Star Trek and Star Wars have both had official and unofficial games based on them, if you want to do something based on them. Their threads (>>51942741 and >>51899084) would probably be happy to help.

For universal systems that can handle futuristic sci-fi games and even do fantasy cross-overs like the WOIN advertising is suggesting, GURPS and Fate can both do virtually anything. GURPS would best benefit from some of the sourcebooks, but space sf is definitely one of its strong suits, and it handles dungeon fantasy quite well. Diaspora, Bulldogs, Starblazer Adventures, and Mindjammer are all variations of Fate that are built around doing space science fiction out of the box, but given how customisable Fate is the free core rules would function on their own. The OpenD6 system is totally free, has free space sourcebooks, and has been used as the basis for an official Star Wars game and an unofficial Mass Effect game. I'm sure Savage Worlds and most other universal systems have some ability to handle this.

What are you looking for that made WOIN stand out to you?
>>
>>51976935
Wow, thanks for the details!

I'm not sure to be honest, like I said I wasn't the one to "discover" it. I'll definitely take a look into those systems you suggested! Thanks a ton!
>>
>>51977013
A few notes:
The official Star Wars RPGs, as far as I'm aware (WEG/d6, Saga/d20, and FFG), have been good enough that the systems are worth looking into even if you don't want to run Star Wars specifically. I've heard people talking about using some of them to run mecha games, for example. The FFG system does use some sort of fucked up proprietary dice, though. The official Star Trek games never really caught on as much, so I'm less sure of their quality, but if Star Trek is something you like, it would probably be worth asking the thread.

GURPS is a great system but can be hard to get into at first because of how complex it appears (keep in mind it's a system that basically makes it possible to run *any* sort of game at the same level as most dedicated systems), if you are interested by GURPS but get intimidated, try asking the GURPS general for help. Fate is comparatively light; it's supposed to use some fucked up proprietary dice, but there's ways to use regular d6 dice as a substitute without much trouble. Diaspora is hard/realistic sci-fi (it comes with a neat way to develop a custom setting for the group), Bulldogs is soft action-y (kind of Star Wars flavored), Starblazer Adventures is generic, and Mindjammer is a middle-of-the-road in terms of hardness (it has a really fleshed-out setting with a lot of transhumanism).

One unfortunate thing I will note is that in pretty much all space sf games, ship-to-ship combat winds up being a little less satisfying than people hope it would be. There's kind of an inherent issue where, in a starship, the ship functions as a single unit that everyone takes a part in. In ground combat, be it sci-fi or fantasy, each player acts as one unit and makes all the decisions for their character. In a starship each player is only going to be making a small slice of the decisions. It's not usually a huge issue and you can have fun starship battles, but you usually need to balance them with person-scale stuff.

That might actually be Tolkien.

Swap Uruk out for Orc and you've got the typical Orc/Goblin difference.

This.

Although even then there's significant differences between the Goblins of Moria and the Orcs of Mordor, even if they're ostensibly members of the same broad species.

Provided you come up with an acceptable number of personality traits for a character in a tabletop RPG, is it possible to arrange those traits in a logical structure of priority, so that you're less likely to forget which one to roleplay in any given situation?

You could, but if you need a flowchart for how to role play your character and think you are doing something wrong.
>>
>>51974181
I'd disagree. If you have been playing many characters close together or haven't played that specific one in a while, some sort of basic flowchart for broad concepts and traits could aid in getting back into the proper mentality.
It could also prevent you from making choices as a player and not a character during stressful or shocking developments. Save you from "doing something wrong".
>>51973029
So long as you are not constantly relying on it to make choices, and rather using it to refresh your role playing I believe it could be an asset. As for the actual structure of the chart, I feel like it would be a character-by-character basis with only some super-broad ideas applying overall.

ITT ideas for original settings, I'll start. Essentially the blood war (or equivalent for this setting) reaches the prime material plane. I imagine the setting being post apocalyptic fantasy, kind of like Dark Sun but with demons fighting devils everywhere. I think it would work well with some steampunk content or at least primitive gunpowder weapons as well.

What if the world was in an endless cycle of birth, apocalyptic destruction, and rebirth? And each successive world had its own laws of physics, and its own apocalyptic destruction? And furthermore, some creatures, structures, and artifacts from past worlds somehow manage to survive the cyclic cataclysm, possibly multiple cyclic cataclysms?

Meaning that strange creatures, the last remnants of a dead universe, are struggling to survive and adapt to an alien set of laws of physics, knowing that they'll never return to their true home and that eventually, this world will be destroyed as well? And this also gives justification for slumbering eldritch gods and labyrinthine, alien ruins of dead civilizations?

The wild west but with a splash of high fantasy magic and biopunk. Around the late 18th century, an American inventor accidentally discovers cheap bioengineering (through some deus ex machina shit, idk), and with the boom of westward expansion also comes the desire to put this new science to the test, pioneers modifying their body to help them survive the untamed lands, soon developing abilities such as telekenesis, pyromancy, and a slew of other powers at the cost of looking less and less human. Once these biologically modified pioneers (or bioneers) reach the lands of the west, their bodies look something akin to pic related. Meanwhile, back on the east coast, the practice of bioengineering is banned due to religious zealots, riots, race wars, and the South pondering secession to keep the satanic muties out of their gene pool.

The world is a series of interlocking rings, and each ring functions as its own autonomous nation with its own homogenous racial population and biosphere. The rings are connected by a series of ancient, monolithic portal temples. The rings were held in place by the world's ambient mana field, and the rings stayed separate, apart from some trade, travel, and piracy.

Recently, the mana field has begun to evaporate, weakening mages and causing their powers to become unpredictable, as well as magically irradiating vast swathes of land, creating magically mutated abominations. The rings are beginning to crack and fall apart with earthquakes, and the steady of mana is making the ring's orbit unstable. The rings on the outer layer are mostly safe for now, but the innermost rings have been destroyed, or are being destroyed, and their inhabitants have begun to invade the outer rings in a panicked effort to survive. With the imminent apocalypse, hordes of magical abominations, hordes of desperate refugees, the armies of violent conquerors, the earthquakes, the loss of magical power, and collapse of the biospheres has caused total anarchy.

Legend has it that an ancient artifact can restore the rings and return the mana, but no one knows where to begin the search, or if it even exists, and the path is fraught with peril. Regardless of the dangers, it is the only way to preserve the ringwoelf, and without it, the fate of all things is in question.

ITT we discuss magic items we've created in our various games and given to our groups.

Mainly looking for inspiration, and items that caused hyjinx or backfired on the DM are always welcome.

I will start with two I made in the first campaign I dm'ed.

>Trinket of Inspiration.
While in possession of this item, the owner may focus on it during a long rest to gain inspiration.

>Staff of infinite shapes.
Once a day this staff may shape changed as a bonus action. It can take the form of -
A staff+1
A club+1
A Spear+1
A javelin+1

Also the owner of the staff may take the form of any beast with a 1/8 CR rating as an action as many times a day as they choose. Unlike a druids shapeshift any hit points lost while in these forms are taken from the characters normal hp pool.

Hi /tg/. Currently playing a Tech-Priest in Dark Heresy. Still only lvl3 but have just passed the machine soul of a fellow tech-priest into the light of the Omnissiah and see that I have the option to take mechadendrites and, well, he's not using them anymore...
So I simply want to know, fluff wise, whether the Mechanicus would believe in the recycling of the mechadendrite to a new priest. The GM will likely rule it to be a utility mechadendrite just for ease if it's plausible to pass on.
Thanks.

It's well established in the forge of Mars books that ALL augmentations get reused or at least recycled. They would probably consider burying good mechadendrites minor tech-heresy, or at least very wasteful. I would suspect the only thing a tech priest would bury is whatever is left of the human body.
