Ghost Thief's Trick

When you perform a steal combat maneuver during the spell's duration, you can steal closely worn items, such as articles of clothing, as well as items hidden in a pack or bag. Stealing an item in a pack or bag gives your opponent +5 CMD against your steal maneuver, while stealing a closely worn item gives your opponent +10 CMD against it.

When stealing a closely worn item with this spell, you can only steal items that could be donned or removed with a move action or less, but you can attempt a steal maneuver even against such items that are out of sight, such as a tunic worn underneath a suit of armor. This aspect of the spell turns you partially incorporeal, and so opponents with armor bonuses provided by a force effect add those bonuses to their CMD against your steal maneuver.

Gameplay is the exact same between the two. Pathfinder has more easily available resources online and takes a more mechanics-first approach with less class complexity. DnD is more flavorful with a much wider spread on balance and far more character options, though tracking down resources can be a pain.

I'm a fan of both games, and my opinion is that they're both successful at very different things.

Pathfinder is almost identical mechanically to 3.5e, save for being a liittle less broken mechanically speaking. It allows for tons of crazy character builds and offers loads of options for customization. This means players have more freedom to make their characters, but it's also very easy to make an awful character and there can be huge disparities in power level within a single party based on how well each player knows the system.

D&D 5e (I assume you're talking 5e?) is far more stable, but character creation is fairly linear. You pick a race, a class, a path for your class, and you may choose to get a feat or two instead of stat increases down the road, and that's it. This means that it's good for getting right into roleplaying, but that it's a bit weak for people looking for tons of mechanical depth.

I'm trying to figure out how fighters in 5e stay competitive against wizards at high levels.

I'm guessing there's something I'm missing. Assuming a +2 magical weapon, the most they're doing is 1d8+7 per attack, 1d10+7 or 2d6+7 if they're using a two handed or great weapon.

Raw damage wise, I dont. I'm playing a fighter in a group with two wizards and a cleric. I'm the group Plan B. Something shuts down casting/is immune to magic/gets the drop on us? I go from pack mule and XP sponge to a Goddamn Rockstar because I'm the only player who can take it on the chin without going down and can deal with something trying to eat my face in melee. Wizards talk shit right up until that nameless horror blinks into their threat range, then it's all "oh gods it's chewing on my leg, save meeeeeeee!"

Literally any system you devise is going to be an abstraction and simplification, ultimately breaking down in certain circumstances. Listing personal values as a flexible system is fine, but once you're trying to put people in bins, it's not going to work.

Tell me about religious characters you've played, played with, GMed for, etc.

Do you like them to be kind and altruistic? Angry extremist paladins? Weird cultists?

I'm getting kind of tired of almost every paladin and religious knight character I come across being a 'deus vult! heresy!' screaming nut so I'm starting to prefer religious characters as genuinely altruistic and moral.

Religious characters are practically my niche. Cleric-type classes have always been my favorite kind of classes, and most of my characters end up having a religious background.

They're majorly more of the kind and altruistic sort, rather than the angry extremist kind. Ones that value goodness and kindness, and would rather spread the tenets of their faith through peaceful means rather than violence, only drawing their weapons or using their offensive spells should there be no other choice to protect others or themselves. Also valuing redemption, giving evildoers a chance to turn to light and right their wrongs rather than indiscriminately slaying them.

I'm particularly partial to deities of light and healing. Ones like Pelor and Sarenrae in particular. Basically I like being the Fire Emblem Bishop. Healing people, throwing around fancy holy light magic, and bringing others to my faith with my compassion and kind demeanor.

Weird cultists are also fun, but they're usually on the more on the evil end of the spectrum for me.

I played in a setting where the elven gods were consumed and their portfolio taken over by human gods. Some elves adapted to this and turned to worship the human equivalents, others continued worship in their gods absence, or discovered newer darker gods.

My character was an elf mercenary that was incredibly religious and racist in that endearing character sort of way, so much so he had a hidden agenda to disrupt the human churches and break them down. He disliked human clerics greatly, and if given the opportunity would kill the faithful first. He never targeted those beyond his contract however, so his actions could never be truly construed as personally motivated, but rather just what he and the party was hired to do.

His plans began with a faith-fueled rebellion in part of the human empire. He and the party were hired on to quell the uprising, and while they did so, he made sure that the losses were great on both sides where diplomacy would have settled things cleaner. This namely put the party in the good graces of the church.

Later on he encountered a being that was faithful to the church but heretical because of it's existence as an undead, despite still part of the church. He helped the creature in it's task and kept it's existence secret. This being went on to create a schism in the belief structure.

As the game went on, they party became part of the intrigues of the church, with a supposed plot to assassinate the emperor and turn the empire in a theocracy with the Pope at the head. The party was present at a great ceremony, the Pope had publicly denounced the Emperor at this ceremony and had him killed. The elf and the party attacked, killing the Pope.

This summoned a fucking angel who the elf gladly killed and declared the death of the Emperor, Pope, and symbol of the Human Gods as the triumph of his elven gods. As that was the end of the campaign, the epilogue detailed his actions sparking an elven jihad on human kingdoms and churches.
